Alternative WiFi plans that offer speeds 4 times faster than 'normal' internet

ARE you tired of slow Wi-Fi speeds from regular internet providers?

Well, there are some 'great' alternatives that households can try that can be up to four times faster than their 'normal' internet.

Satellite broadband is a promising alternative to getting internet to your home, especially if mainstream providers let you down.

“Because it does not rely on a network of cables entering every home, it is expected to become a beneficial option for people living in rural areas in the coming years,” USwitch explains.

“Like satellite TV, it broadcasts all the way from a telecom satellite in space to a satellite dish installed on your property.

“It is then connected to a Wi-Fi router, just like normal broadband.”

As mainstream providers look to roll out full fiber internet to every corner of Britain by the end of this decade, many rural households still feel left out.

Full fiber can be difficult and expensive to install in some of these locations, and that's “where satellite broadband could help,” according to Uswitch.

With satellite internet, households get Wi-Fi beamed from low Earth orbit directly to a personal satellite dish.

Fed-up villagers have already flocked to Musk's satellite internet service due to the slow speeds of traditional broadband providers.

“While a small number of UK households already use some form of satellite broadband, new upgrades to the technology will make satellite internet a much faster and more reliable option than before,” USwitch added.

“In particular, companies like SpaceX and Eutelsat OneWeb are leading the way, with satellites that can provide internet speeds of up to 300 Mbps.

“That's much faster than the average speed in the UK, which is currently 69 Mbps.

“To put this in perspective, you could use satellite broadband to download a two-hour HD movie in about four and a half minutes, but it would take about 17 minutes at 69 Mbps.”

There are quite a few satellite internet providers to choose from, but as Uswitch explains, it's the only Starlink and OneWeb that offer speeds above 10 Mbps.

This is because Starlink and OneWeb technology are a lot newer and faster than previous satellite broadband providers.

Starlink

Starlink has been accessible in Great Britain since 2021, with coverage spanning almost the entire country, excluding the northernmost parts of Scotland.

In mid-January, BT reportedly submitted plans to team up with Elon Musk's Starlink to tackle rural areas with poor broadband connectivity.

The telecoms giant, which owns EE, is reportedly testing Starlink satellite equipment at its Adastral Park research centre, Ipswitch.

Musk's company operates a network of about 5,300 satellites and has plans to add another 7,500 by the end of 2027 — a feat that has raised concerns among some scientists and astronomers.

What does Starlink offer?

Hundreds of tests carried out by ThinkBroadband between March 2022 and August 2022 in Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England revealed:

  • Average download speed: 106.1Mbps
  • Average upload speed: 9.72Mbps

During this period, maximum speeds reached 293 Mbps for downloads and 33 Mbps for uploads, while minimum recorded speeds were 2.5 Mbps for downloads and 1.2 Mbps for uploads.

Starlink offers various packages for homes, businesses and broadband on the go.

And it has a hardware rental service similar to Sky's.

The package best for households costs £75 per month.

OneWeb

OneWeb is a British subsidiary of Eutelsat, a French satellite operator based in Paris.

The company emerged as Britain's largest satellite broadband provider in the 2010s and has long been regarded as one of Britain's 'tech darlings'.

However, after its collapse in early 2020, it had to restart operations as part of Eutelsat.

So far, it has launched about 634 satellites into low Earth orbit and provides internet to 37 countries.

What does OneWeb offer?

OneWeb currently partners with other companies to offer its satellite broadband, such as BT, Brdy, Clarus Networks, AST and Airbus.

Each company will offer its own prices.

However, Brdy offers satellite internet packages for £29.90 per month.

  • Average download speeds: 25-150Mbps
  • Average upload speed: 6Mbps

If you don't feel like doing that, here's a list of other satellite internet companies to look at:

  • Freedom Sat
  • Relialink
  • Viasat
