Each parcel retailed for 22p, containing custard, malted milk and shortcake biscuits – with a whole pallet going for just £2.64.

The shopper said: “Today's bargain at Asda York, 22p a pack – and yes, there is a pallet full, dated September.”

Other bargain hunters spotted the 22p biscuits as far away as Southampton, Portsmouth, Norwich and Middlesbrough.

One said: “I was able to get a six pack and took two to my grandma and grandpa.

“I've never seen them so happy.”

Another said: “They cost 12p in Morrisons.”

A third said: “No. This stuff is never in our Asda.”

The Elkes family have been making biscuits at their factory in the market town of Uttoxeter in Staffordshire for more than a century.

On its website Elkes says: “We only use the highest quality ingredients.

“We have a wealth of baking expertise that has been passed down from generation to generation.
