Sports fans gathered Damar Hamlin after the Buffalo Bills safety collapsed on the field during the Jan. 2, 2023, game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The then 24-year-old athlete went into cardiac arrest after tackling the Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins during the first quarter. While he initially stood up, Hamlin collapsed moments later and medical professionals rushed to him on the field. After nearly 10 minutes of CPR, Hamlin’s “heartbeat was restored on the field,” the Bills said.
The match was “temporarily suspended” after Hamlin was taken to hospital in Ohio. He was listed in critical condition on January 3, 2023, according to the team.
The professional athlete, now 25, was released from a hospital in Ohio on January 9, 2023 and transported to Buffalo. In the months that followed, he continued to share his recovery commitment via social media, including his own first training back with the bills in June 2023.
