Earthquake in Cairns hits no reports of injuries or damage

Two earthquakes hit Australia’s east coast within hours, shaking two cities

Two earthquakes have hit the east coast of Australia, with a magnitude 4.3 earthquake off the coast of northern Queensland and a magnitude 3.1 earthquake near Grafton on the north coast of NSW.

The epicenter of the Queensland earthquake was 130km off the coast of Cairns and struck at 10:13pm on Wednesday, Geosciences Australia said.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have had no reports of injuries or damage.

No injuries or damage have been reported.

Geoscience says towns or cities near the epicenter may have felt a “very weak tremor.”

The impact of both quakes was quite minimal compared to the magnitude 3.8 quake that struck 35 km northwest of Melbourne CBD on May 28.

According to seismologist Adam Pascale, it was the largest earthquake within 40 km of the capital in more than 120 years.

In 1902, an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 was reported.
