That's because he linked the manager to a famous character from Eastenders – Ian Beale – prompting his colleague to call it the “Freudian slip of the day”.

The reporter immediately corrected himself and smiled at the embarrassing blunder.

Viewers watching from home also found the incident funny and made fun of Downie.

One said: “Sensational Ian Beale 😂👏”

Another said: “Excellent.”

A third wrote: “I haven't wanted to say he hasn't done that for 8 weeks. 😂”

And another commented: “Would have been better with Ian Beale.”

Beale, 43, was sacked by Sunderland after just eight weeks and 12 games.

He won just four games and some fans called for him to go after he brutally rebuffed defender Trai Hume's attempt for a handshake after coming off against Birmingham on Saturday.

Beale reportedly lost the dressing room, with some players “particularly unhappy” with his behavior following defeats, including bringing in stars for extra training.
