The Block’s Shaynna Blaze calls out Lord Alan Sugar and Fitzy and Wippa for ‘derogatory’ comments

Shaynna Blaze of The Block said she speaks out against derogatory comments to try and break a cycle of abuse.

Having been in several domestic abusive relationships in the past, the 60-year-old interior designer is a co-founder of Voice of Change, a charity that aims to tackle family violence.

Shaynna said one of the most important tools she has taught and teaches people is to speak out when someone makes a misogynistic or derogatory comment, as they can lead to more dangerous and violent incidents.

This is why Shaynna called out Nova FM’s Fitzy and Wippa two years ago after laughing at a comment Celebrity Apprentice boss Lord Alan Sugar made about her.

The interior designer joined the 2021 series and Lord Sugar said live on radio that Shaynna has a “face like a slapped a**e.”

On Tuesday, The Block star echoed the controversy on The Jess Row Big Talk Show, explaining why she didn’t want to let Lord Sugar get away with talking about her like that, and why it wasn’t okay for the radio hosts to laugh.

“They laughed and they said, ‘Oh yeah, her face gets a little squashed,'” Shaynna explained.

“As soon as they were done, Wippa texted me… and he said, ‘I’m so embarrassed I didn’t want to say that,’ and I told Wippa no problem you’re sorry, but the way we talk about this, make sure I’m on your radio show the next day.

“And they did and we talked about it exactly, that we do the awkward “haha” because we don’t have the tools or the muscle memory to say, “You know what, I don’t think you’re right about that” when someone says something derogatory.

“When we do that awkward laugh, they tell them they’re funny and they can go on.”

The famous interior designer said domestic violence should be talked about more often and people should stop blaming victims.

After leaving several domestic violence situations, Shaynna said it’s very frustrating to be asked how she got into these relationships and why she didn’t leave sooner.

She added that people should instead be asking why abusers do what they do, and what conversations we can have to effect change.

“When people say, ‘Why don’t you leave?’ unless you’re in that situation, you don’t know the headspace, you don’t know the manipulation, you don’t know the consequences, and we have to change the narrative.

“A few weeks ago someone said to me on the radio, ‘You’re an intelligent person, why didn’t you just leave?

And it really touched me because shouldn’t you be asking why he did that? That’s the narrative we need to change, not to blame the victim for the situation they’re in.

“We also have to be honest that men can change, abusive behavior can change, it’s about recognizing it and changing the language of how they speak and how we respond, as well as how we talk to them.”

The Block star said it’s awkward to invite people over, but everyone should learn the tools to do it without being too confrontational.

She explained, “It’s always awkward, but if you’re in a group conversation and someone says something that isn’t quite right, like if they say something derogatory about their partner, just reach out and say, ‘What do you mean by that? ” ?”

“And they have to break it down without you getting confrontational.

“When we remain silent, we are empowering that person, and it is said that being silent is another form of abuse, so if you let these people say these things, they have permission to keep saying them.”
