What time will Cyclone Jasper make landfall?

Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Laura Boekel said Jasper was likely to make landfall around 1pm on Wednesday.

Where is Cyclone Jasper currently located?

As of 5 a.m. Wednesday, Jasper was about 180 km east of Cooktown and had dropped to a Category 1 system, with winds of about 120 km/h.

The storm is expected to intensify before making landfall.

What will happen in direct impact zones and risk areas?

High risk areas are likely to be hit by flash flooding, heavy rain and gale force winds, with a coincident storm tide expected to occur between Cooktown and Lucinda.

Areas between Cape Flattery and Port Douglas have been flagged as high risk areas by the Bureau of Meteorology.

How strong will the wind be?

Destructive wind gusts can reach speeds of 140 kilometers per hour.

The Bureau said Wujai Wujai, Wonga, Port Douglas, Cairns, Babinda, Innisfail, Ravenshoe, Herberton, Atherton and Mareeba could be hit by gusty winds from early Wednesday.

How much rain will fall?

Forecasters predict 24-hour rainfall totals of 500mm for the coastline.

Areas between Cape Flattery and Ingham are expected to receive at least 150mm within six hours.

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni warned that low-lying areas would experience a power drop overnight on Tuesday if the state began preventive measures.

Swiftwater rescue teams and additional police and force crews have been sent to the north of the state in anticipation of the wild weather.
