Japanese designers are preparing for rising sea levels – by making plans for a huge floating city.

Developer Link say Dog City‘ would provide a self-sufficient living environment for 40,000 people, a quarter of which would be permanent residents.

The city consists of three main parts – the first is an outer ring containing the main residential areas and facilities for water, sewage and energy.

Within the ring, there are floating buildings that move freely, with representations of boats transporting residents around the city.

Beneath the surface, meanwhile, are an undersea data center and medical research facilities.

The city’s outer frame is shaped like a ship, which the designers say helps it act as a defense against tsunamis. As a contemporary interpretation of Noah’s Ark, the city will house victims of natural disasters and climate refugees.

Facilities located throughout the city include a sports stadium, floating parks, cemeteries, places of worship and ‘residential hotels’.

Described as a ‘medical city by the sea’, Dogen City will provide ‘healthcare and medical tourism’ with residents receiving daily medical care.

Fresh vegetables will be grown in the city through an agricultural method that uses sea water.

With a circumference of 4 km (2.5 mi), the plan would be for residents to reach any point in the city within an hour.

The N-Ark development roadmap currently marks the year 2030 for completion. The designers have not yet released any information about the project’s budget or proposed location.

It’s not the first floating settlement concept to make headlines this year — plans were unveiled in February for an eco-friendly floating village that would supposedly house up to 50,000 people in the event global warming leads to massive flooding.

The concept was conceived by an international team of architects and designers led by the Italian firm Luca Curci Architects and the British Tim Fu Design.
