CNN host Erica Hill was stunned when the channel's veteran law enforcement analyst shared some unexpected truths about crime in New York.

The awkward moment came as the panel discussed Saturday's brutal attack on two police officers in Times Square, and the disappearance of the migrants who were arrested after being released without bail.

Only one of the six defendants remains in jail despite multiple previous charges, and four are now believed to have fled to California on a bus with the help of a church-affiliated charity.

“Does the fact that they were police officers change anything?” Hill pondered as she questioned former police officer John Miller about the case and the suspect's background.

“What the detectives are telling me is that they have crews here that operate in New York, do all their thefts and then go to Florida and spend the money and then come back,” Miller told her.

“And I thought, 'Why don't they just stay in Florida and steal' and they said 'because you're going to jail there.'”

The CNN panel on Saturday discussed the brutal attack on two police officers in Times Square, and the disappearance of the migrants who were arrested after being released without bail.

'Oh!' replied the clearly surprised presenter as the panel fell into silence.

'Fascinating!' co-host Phil Mattingly eventually ventured.

The brazen attack was carried out around 8:30pm when officers attempted to disperse a disorderly group in front of 220 West 42 Street.

Surveillance footage shows more than a dozen hooded men attacking the two officers after they tried to detain one of the men.

Both received punches and kicks to the head and torso as they struggled with the suspect on the ground. The images shocked even veteran New Yorkers and prompted liberal Governor Kathy Hochul to call for the men's deportation.

“You don't touch our police officers, you don't touch anyone,” she said.

“Take them all and send them back.”

Police are still looking for at least eight other suspects in addition to the six already charged, of whom only 24-year-old Yohenry Brito is behind bars.

Brito was already known to police for a series of past offenses, including petit larceny charges for stealing $275 worth of merchandise from Bergdorf Goodman in October and $139 worth of clothing from Macy's, according to court documents seen by the Daily News.

Meanwhile, Yorman Reveron — one of five suspects charged before being released without bail — was arrested in December for allegedly stealing from Macy's flagship store.

The 24-year-old migrant was also arrested in November and charged with stealing from a Nordstrom Rack store.

Reveron and three other charged suspects – Darwin Andres Gomez Izquiel, 19, Kelvin Servat Arocha, 19, Wilson Juarez, 21 – are believed to have fled the city after their release.

Police believe they went to a Catholic church under assumed names and asked for help reaching California. Suspect Jhoan Boada, 22, was also released after being charged and was seen throwing the bird at members of the press waiting outside the court.

Jandry Barros, 21, a seventh suspect who was arrested but released without charge due to lack of evidence, also has a criminal record with authorities.

Patrick Hendry, president of the New York Police Benevolent Association, condemned the criminal justice system that allowed the men's release.

“Assaults on police officers are becoming an epidemic, and the reason is that we see a revolving door in cases like this,” he added.

“It is impossible for police officers to effectively tackle crime and disorder if the justice system cannot or will not protect us while we do that job.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis welcomed Miller's analysis, saying criminals know they will be held accountable in the Sunshine State.

“You can see why people are fleeing some of these areas that can't even keep the streets safe, they can't even keep homeless people off the streets,” he told reporters.

“It's been really problematic in many parts of our country, we're doing it here.”

Australia’s current housing shortage has made it harder than ever for young people to own their own home.

And Georgie Gardner has some solid advice for millennials and Gen Z looking to buy in the increasingly expensive property market.

Appears on 9Honey On Friday, the 53-year-old host said people must learn to make sacrifices in their lifestyle if they want to achieve the dream of homeownership.

Georgie shared her feelings for the ‘younger generations’ who are facing a housing shortage, explaining: ‘The downside is that you have to understand that if you want your share of property there is something to offer and there are things are those you have to do without.’

Gardner continued, “I’m aware that I sound judgmental, but on the one hand, I’ve been exposed to people whining about not being able to get in. [to the market].

“And on the other hand, living a lifestyle that, quite frankly, is probably not conducive to saving for that first down payment.”

Elsewhere in the chat, Gardner spoke about the importance of owning a home, especially as the rental market has become unstable with rising prices and arbitrary evictions.

“The security that comes with owning your own piece, your own piece, should never be underestimated,” says Gardner.

The popular Nine personality appeared on the program alongside 2GB’s Ben Fordham, Richard Wilkins and Shelly Horton.

It comes after Gardner recently revealed why her co-hosting role on the Today show didn’t work out.

The 9News star replaced Lisa Wilkinson in 2018 and sat alongside Karl Stefanovic on Channel Nine’s breakfast show for a year.

She then co-hosted the show with Deborah Knight in 2019.

On the It’s All Her podcast, Gardner shared details about the job and said it was a “privilege” to take on the role.

However, with issues surrounding Stefanovic’s very public divorce from ex-wife Cassandra Thorburn, as well as his relationship with current wife Jasmine Yarbrough, things began to take their toll on the studio.

The journalist then quashed previous reports about the couple’s strained relationship.

“We got along really well and really loved each other, it was actually great chemistry,” she continued.

“Anyway, one thing led to another: he was taken off the show. In fact, they took everyone away, which was very difficult for me.

Stefanovic was suspended from the Today show before Deborah Knight moved in next door to Gardner in 2019.

The sudden death of celebrated Pennsylvania news anchor Emily Matson on Monday has been ruled a suicide.

Matson, 42, was struck by a train around 12:45 a.m. Monday in Fairview Township in Erie Pennsylvania, where she lived, according to the Erie County Coroner’s Office.

The Erie News Now host, who was married to police officer Ryan Onderko, was last on the air Friday before the station announced her shocking death on Monday.

“It is with very heavy hearts that we learned of the passing of our beloved Erie News Now news anchor Emily Matson,” said Scott MacDowell, news director of Erie News Now.

“Emily was a shining light in our newsroom, delivering news with the passion and love she had for the Erie community and Northwestern Pennsylvania.

“We loved Emily very much and our thoughts go out to the Matson family and her husband Ryan at this time.”

Emily Matson, 42, killed herself when she jumped in front of a train, the coroner’s office said

Since her death, glowing tributes have been pouring in for the popular news presenter, with many colleagues saying they are devastated by the news.

“Emily was such a presence in the newsroom and in the studio, and I can’t count how many times I stopped by her desk to talk to her or just listen to her conversations with others,” wrote meteorologist Sara Tonks.

“She always had a way of drawing people in and making them feel welcome, and when I first started at ENN, she got me included in the Secret Santa gift exchange and gave me a sign that reads ‘Let it Snow… Somewhere Else – Erie, PA.

“She made me, a stranger and a baby in the industry, feel like I belonged and was always available with advice or ideas when I needed it.”

Matson worked for Erie News Now for 19 years before she died. She was most recently the anchor of the 7 and 11 p.m. weekday newscasts.

Katie McGraw, another former colleague, said her death was an “incredible loss.”

“I am heartbroken and truly devastated to share the news of the passing of my friend and former colleague,” she wrote.

“Emily and I worked together for a few years in Erie, PA.

‘She and my fiancée had a very nice friendship. I have so many wonderful memories with her. She was hilarious, witty, kind, fiery, talented, wonderful and fun. She is already so missed.”

John Stehlin, who worked with her, had shared a Facebook post of the two eating brownies on Friday before she died.

‘It’s National Brownie Day! Look what my favorite colleague brought at 7am! She’s so nice! But she forgot the milk,” he wrote.

Many fans have left a message of condolence under the photo.

“I’m so sad to hear about Emily,” one wrote. “I so enjoyed how much fun you both had on the seven o’clock news. Light and healing for all at Erie News Now.”

One person added: “John, I am truly sorry for your loss. The seven o’clock news will never be the same again. I’m so devastated, I felt like I knew her. I had the pleasure of meeting her once. Once again my heart aches for you.”

Another said: ‘Sometimes you won’t truly know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.’

“Thinking of you and everyone who loved Emily during this devastating and difficult time.”

Matson was remembered by an old colleague as “very, very optimistic.”

‘She was a very positive person. She always encouraged the new people. She always had a joke for everyone,” said Paul Wagner, who worked for Erie News Now during Matson’s entire time at the company.

During Matson’s time covering crime in Erie Pennsylvania, she developed local law enforcement resources and had a deep relationship with police.

One of those relationships was with Police Chief Dan Spizarny, who had only positive things to say about the late reporter.

‘She never had a bad day. No matter how bad the news was that day, she always left with a good feeling. You would never see her in a bad mood,” he said.

She subsequently married officer Ryan Onderko.

According to a local funeral announcement Matson’s funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude RC Church. Visitation will take place the day before at Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc.

First of all, Jeff Bezos’ new mega yacht was too big to sail under a bridge in the Netherlands. Now the enormous ship’s size – it is more than 400 feet long – appears to be preventing it from keeping company with other private yachts in Port Everglades, Florida, where it is anchored.

Instead, the megayacht, called Koru, is packed with huge oil tankers and general container ships.

Koru is a sailing yacht, unlike the much larger diesel boats popular with other billionaires. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, according to Oceancothe Dutch company that completed the construction of the boat earlier this year.

The deck area of the three-masted schooner has three Jacuzzis and a swimming pool. According to Oceanco, the inside has a ‘timeless, contemporary style’, with natural wood tones, warm neutral colors and patterned textiles. It also includes a mermaid on the bow that looks like his partner, Lauren Sánchez.

Koru, which Bloomberg estimated would cost approximately $500 million to rebuild, arrived at Florida port on November 22 after departing Gibraltar earlier this month, according to Marine Traffic, a real-time maritime data platform. A Port Everglades spokeswoman confirmed Thursday that Mr. Bezos’ yacht was in port.

Mr. Bezos’ journey on his new yacht got off to a rocky start. Last year, city officials in Rotterdam initially agreed to dismantle De Hef, a 95-year-old bridge, so Koru could pass through from the nearby city where the bridge was built. The disassembly process would have taken more than a day, as would putting it back together. But after an outcry from the community – including calls to throw eggs at the boat as it allegedly passed – Oceanco decided against this and the yacht was towed to another location to have the masts attached to it.

Have a nice summer, friends. Today I’m finishing my turn with leading this newsletter. So this is a thank you card.

I became a climate reporter after many years as an international correspondent because I could see how the climate crisis affected everything from how people farm to how nations rearrange geopolitics.

That is why I have chosen to anchor this newsletter for you. I wanted to show you, in short bite-sized chunks, not only the dangers of global warming, but also who is doing what to tackle it. I wanted to share with you the great work of my colleagues. I wanted to guide us through sometimes impenetrable debates and simply explain how it matters to ordinary people in our daily lives. I wrote from a place of neither hope nor despair, exactly, but from the perspective of an OK-now-what-do-we-do pragmatist.

So, for nearly a year and a half, supported by Douglas Alteen, Manuela Andreoni, Claire O’Neill, Adam Pasick and many others who came along to help, Team Climate Forward has pulled things off like stupid climate negotiations in Sharm el Sheikh (“a parade of men as I described on my postcard) and the biggest U.S. climate law act of my life (plus tips on how U.S. residents can benefit from some of that climate aid).

We reported on the news of India’s fatal heat and teased the geopolitical ramifications of Europe’s unusually warm weather (“Winter is dragging the Kremlin,” I wrote).

You joined me on road trips with The Teenager, once to Costa Rica, another through Central California. You have sent us your stories about the wild creatures around you. You told us about intergenerational impasses in your families. Some of you wanted to know why we didn’t write about population growth. So we did. And showed you why that’s not really a big deal.

You sent us sweet messages. You complained. I’ve read it all. It has made me a better journalist. Sometimes it moved me. Thank you.

I learned three things from my Climate Forward experience.

First, it is impossible to look away from the climate crisis. Burning fossil fuels is scorching even the countries that burn a lot of them, such as the United States. The latest, most frightening example came last month, when people in many parts of the United States suffered dangerous, record-breaking heat. There is little doubt that it is being amplified by human-induced climate change.

Second, we live in a time of great change. The global economy is no longer driven solely by coal, oil and gas. Solar energy is expanding faster than even the champions imagined. Every automaker in the United States is rolling out electric vehicles. Electric heat pumps are on the rise in Europe. Of course, change is not coming fast enough. Greenhouse gas emissions are rising dangerously. But two things can be true at the same time. The challenge of writing about climate change is to keep both in mind.

Three: The people most aggressively changing their daily lives are the ones who are not responsible for the problem of climate change. I’ve shared their stories with you, from South Korea to Bangladesh to Uganda. Sometimes their strategies work. Sometimes they don’t, with dangerous consequences.

This is perhaps the most important lesson for me, which I have tried to distill in a recent essay. “As a climate journalist, I get an eternal question from my fellow Americans: What should I do in the face of a crisis this big and complicated?” I wrote. “The answer I saw on a recent reporting trip to East and Southern Africa: everything.”

I want to write more about this in the coming months. It everything.

First I’m going to take a long summer vacation. The pace of the newsletter has kept my quick-thinking brain very fit. But my slow thinking brain is really weak.

When I get back I’ll record it a new role, travel and write about how people are changing their lives in the face of the climate crisis. Spoiler alert: expect to read more about food. To keep my quick-thinking muscles in shape, I jump in to offer climate analysis on major news events.

I now pass the baton to the capable hands of David Gelles, whose voice you have heard several times in the newsletter. Luckily for you, Manuela Andreoni (read her essay about her mother) will continue to write for Climate Forward.

Thanks again for going on this ride with me.

Global heat records have been broken: The past three days have very likely been the hottest in Earth’s modern history, and we may be entering a multi-year period of exceptional warmth.

Talks between the US and China resume: John Kerry, President Biden’s climate envoy, said he would travel to China next week to resume negotiations after a year-long freeze.

A deal on shipping emissions: Negotiators from almost all countries reached a tentative agreement to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from freighters by the middle of the century.

The economic toll of global warming: Wildfires in Canada have disrupted oil and gas operations, dampened tourism and imposed innumerable costs on the country’s health system.

A new kind of disaster relief: Countries are experimenting with handing out small amounts of money to help their poorest citizens protect themselves and their homes from extreme weather events.

A plan to change quickly: Michigan has long been a laggard when it comes to climate action, but disruptions caused by global warming appear to be changing the state’s lawmakers.

More wind energy: A federal agency approved the construction of 98 wind turbine generators off the coast of New Jersey. It is a major step in President Biden’s energy transition plans.

Why aren’t we more afraid of heat? In “The Heat Will Kill You First,” Jeff Goodell documents the deadly effects of rising temperatures.

  • The Atlantic explained why Antarctica is the last place every tourist should go.

  • From The Associated Press: The United States has decided to make it easier for scientists to move plants and animals outside of their native ecosystems as a last resort to save species.

  • Smith Island, in Maryland, could soon be wiped off the map by rising seas. But according to The Washington Post, home sales are skyrocketing.

  • Grist interviewed experts who say hackers are targeting EV chargers. Most breaches are harmless, but more elaborate plots can bring down entire electricity networks.

There would be no wolves in New York State. When a hunter shot one near Cooperstown in 2021, it opened up a new front in the wars over what is arguably America’s most beloved and reviled predator. Some conservationists say the episode proved wolves are making a comeback and government agencies need to do more to track down and protect the animals.

Manuela Andreoni, Claire O’Neill, Chris Plourde and Douglas Alteen contributed to Climate Forward.

Thank you for being a subscriber. We’ll be back on Tuesday with a new host, David Gelles.

CNN has chosen Kaitlan Collins to host a new weeknight show at 9 p.m., making her one of the most coveted time slots in cable news, a week after she moderated a controversial town hall with former President Donald J. Trump.

The new role for Ms. Collins was announced Wednesday by CNN Chairman Chris Licht ahead of a presentation to advertisers in Midtown Manhattan hosted by Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN.

Her show, which is yet to be titled, will begin in June. “She is a smart and gifted journalist whom we have all seen lawmakers and newsmakers hold accountable,” wrote Mr. Light in a memo to the editorial office. “Kaitlan will expose uncovered angles and challenge conventional wisdom to ensure viewers see a story from all sides.”

The promotion of Ms. Collins, 31, a co-host of the network’s morning show, amounts to a big bet by CNN leadership on a rising star who has impressed colleagues with her interviewing and reporting chops but remains relatively untested as a solo anchor.

It’s also Mr. Licht’s latest attempt to revive his network’s declining ratings.

The 9 p.m. hour at CNN — once the highest-rated time slot — has effectively been vacant since Chris Cuomo was fired in December 2021. Mr. Licht’s recent attempt to fill the hour with a variety of interviews and news specials has been buzzing with viewers. On weeknights, CNN trailed Fox News and MSNBC, and on Friday, two days after Trump’s town hall, it even lost to Newsmax, an upstart conservative network available in fewer homes.

Ms. Collins, who joined CNN in 2017 as a Trump White House reporter, brings a youthful jolt to a program block that has been hosted for years by middle-aged male anchors.

An Alabama native who cut her teeth on conservative news site The Daily Caller, Ms. Collins has been praised by Mr. Licht for her perceived ability to connect with viewers outside of liberal coastal enclaves. She became the network’s chief White House correspondent in 2021 at age 28, the youngest person to hold the role, and covered President Biden before moving to New York last year as co-host of “CNN This Morning”.

She is also highly respected in the political media and is set to become president of the White House Correspondents’ Association starting in 2024. (She had to give up the role after moving from Washington.)

In April, Ms. Collins served as temporary host of CNN’s 9 p.m. for a week. She received favorable ratings, with executives noticing her ability to retain much of Anderson Cooper’s introductory audience from 8 p.m.

Last week, she was in the national spotlight as a New Hampshire City Hall moderator with Mr. Trump. Ms. Collins remained calm despite Mr. Trump’s barrage of untruths, interrupting repeatedly to correct baseless claims. Mr. Trump usually talked over her and was cheered by some audience members when he mocked Ms. Collins as an “annoying person.”

“The election was not rigged, Mr. President,” Ms. Collins said in a representative interview. “You can’t keep saying that all night.” (Mr. Trump kept saying it.)

The exact format of Ms. Collins’ show at 9 p.m. has yet to be determined, but one idea being discussed by CNN executives is a focus on one or two major news topics of the day, according to a person who requested anonymity for internal describe discussions. Mr. Licht has said he wants CNN to show more reports and interviews, rather than experts talking.

Ms. Collins’ ascent comes after she navigated a tense situation at “CNN This Morning.” Her co-host, Don Lemon, shocked crew members last year when he confronted Ms Collins backstage and accused her of interrupting him too often. The tensions, in part, led to Mrs. Collins leaving her talent agent, who also worked with Mr. Lemon, and finding new representation. Mr. Lemon was later ousted by CNN after heavy criticism of sexist remarks he made on-air.

Poppy Harlow, the remaining “CNN This Morning” co-host, will remain with the show, Mr. Light Wednesday. Ms. Harlow will appear with a series of guest hosts until a permanent lineup is named.
