EXCLUSIVE

A heartbroken family has been told they ‘should be grateful’ to property developers in Malaysia who covered up the discovery of an Adelaide woman’s buried remains.

Greg Jenkins, 44, has spent the last six years on a quest for justice after his mother Anna Jenkins, 65, went missing while on a trip to the island of Penang in 2017.

Mr Jenkins said the comment – made this month by a Malaysian High Court judge as she threw out a negligence case against local police he alleges failed to properly investigate – ‘highlights the disrespect’ his family have consistently encountered.

Mr Jenkins said the judge told his family they should be grateful that construction workers involved the police when his mother was found but he alleges they only did so after he put pressure on them.

After his mother disappeared, Mr Jenkins, a member of Australia’s Defence Force, got leave from his post in Hawaii. He flew back to his home in Adelaide before making 34 trips to Malaysia at a cost of more than $300,000 in an effort to track her.

His persistence paid off when a construction worker in 2020 replied to a missing persons flyer he posted saying his mother’s body had been found during works on a building site and it had been quietly moved nearby to not disrupt the development.

The last call Ms Jenkins made from Penang’s main city of Georgetown indicated she was being followed by men after her passport and her family believe she was robbed, murdered and left at the building site – which at that point was still jungle.

Mr Jenkins has received the backing of SA-Best MLC Frank Pangello who also accompanied him to Malaysia for the recent ruling.

Mr Pangello said the Jenkins family, who just want someone to answer for what happened to Anna, have been repeatedly brushed aside by Malaysian authorities.

Ms Jenkins had dual citizenship because she had lived in Australia since the early 1970s, raising a family in Adelaide after she married RAAF serviceman Frank Jenkins as a young woman.

‘It’s high time the Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, made strong representations to the Malaysian Government about the treatment of the Jenkins family,’ Mr Pangello said.

Her son Greg said none has been held to account after a project manager and landscape contractor who were working on the housing development moved his mother’s remains in a deliberate effort to cover up the body.

‘We have proof they found and reburied mum’s remains,’ Mr Jenkins told Daily Mail Australia.

‘How is tampering with evidence and contaminating a crime scene not a criminal offence in any Commonwealth country?’ he said.

‘Instead the judge absolved them and said we should be thanking them that they brought the police in – which they only did because of the amount of pressure I put on the construction worker.’

‘They at first didn’t do anything and the police refused to go there until we forced their hand because it was getting some local media coverage and I said I would go to the foreign minister.’

Devoted son Greg Jenkins found the skeletal remains of his missing Australian mother at a Malaysian building site as he rummaged through rubble after years of investigating

A 2023 coronial inquiry into Ms Jenkin’s death was declared an ‘open verdict’ due to a ‘lack of evidence’.

Anna’s daughter and Greg’s sister, Jen Bowen, said she felt authorities ‘did not care’ for her mother and didn’t want to help.

The housing development was aimed at wealthy Chinese buyers – and traditionally they can’t buy a home anywhere that’s had human remains on it.

‘This development cost over $100million to build but the selling price of the luxury villas made it worth more than a billion – so everyone just hushed it all up,’ Mr Jenkins said.

‘They didn’t want word leaking out that dead bodies had been found there as it’s taboo and could have killed off the market for Chinese buyers.

‘So they moved my mother’s bones off to the side to an area which was going to be a water feature in parkland, and wouldn’t be residential land.

‘We found 34 bones from my mother but the police and deputy public prosecutor called the search off. They said the excavation equipment could destroy any more remains which is ridiculous.

‘When I first went to the site the Chief of Police told me we were not allowed to tell the press we were going or post it on social media.

‘The developer has put a lot of money into Penang and they don’t want anything putting that at stake.

‘They are setting the profits of this developer above a kidnapping and murder investigation.’

Mr Jenkins said during his investigations he found out that an Australian passport is worth $100,000USD on the black market in Malaysia as they are used by transnational criminal groups.

‘Someone holding an Australian passport can access 129 countries without a visa, which is very valuable to these people.’

There is no suggestion the construction workers had anything to do with Ms Jenkins’ disappearance, only that her remains where later found at the building site.

Despite the fact Ms Jenkins was an Australian citizen her case has largely gone under the radar at home.

‘If this had been a younger blonde Australian woman there would be outrage.

‘That just crushes my heart, my mother was the most beautiful person.

‘She was a Christian woman who dedicated her life to helping others. She helped the homeless and refugees in Adelaide through her charity work and an Aboriginal group through the church.

‘It’s just indicative of the person she was.’

Mr Jenkins said the Malaysian High Court judge won’t accept an appeal until he pays the legal costs of the defendants – the government, the police, the land developers, the project manager and a landscape worker.

‘They just want me to drop the case but I haven’t let this go for six years and I’m not going to let an unjust system deter us.’

The quest to find Anna and the legal case has cost the family about $600,000 and the Australian government has provided little in the way of help.

‘Anthony Albanese goes out of his way to send a text about David Warner’s missing baggy green, yet there’s been an Australian citizen go missing overseas and we’ve had no assistance at all.’

TIMELINE OF THE HUNT FOR ANNA

December 5, 2017 –  Retired RAAF serviceman Frank Jenkins and his Malaysian-born wife of 47 years, Anna, make their regular trip from Adelaide to see Anna’s 101 year-old mother on the island of Penang.

December  13, 2017 – Anna has a 3pm dentist’s appointment and the receptionist calls her an Uber afterwards to go on to visit her mother. She is last seen at 4.45pm. Around 5.30pm, Frank says he gets a call from his wife saying she is being followed by ‘two Ukrainians who are after her passport’.

The family raises the alarm and hotel staff help search for her. Anna never arrived at her mother’s nursing home.

December 14, 2017 – Police are alerted at 9.28am and a missing person’s report is filed.

December 15, 2017 – Greg Jenkins arrives in Penang to join the search for his mother, alerts police to six CCTV cameras near where she was last seen.

Earlier CCTV footage had captured Anna Jenkins with her husband Frank talking to a local outside their hotel before she vanished

December 16, 2017 – Family claim police lost interest in the search from this point on, ignoring offers to search her hotel room or phone records.

December 21, 2017 – Distressed husband Frank, who suffers from dementia, flies home to be with his daughter Jen. Greg remains.

December 24, 2017 – Police tell the family they will not be following up on the Uber driver after he gave a statement which they ‘consider to be true fact’ without any corroborating evidence.

January 2018 – Police fail to attend several meetings with Greg, despite a string of possible sightings. Requested CCTV footage is no longer available as it expires after three to six weeks. A series of possible sightings of Anna throughout the year are apparently ignored by police.

October 16, 2018 – Anna’s elderly mother dies without knowing what happened to her daughter.

2019 – Greg continues to travel to Malaysia to hunt for his mother

June 25, 2020 – Greg receives a WhatsApp message from a construction worker saying he’d seen his mother’s dentist’s appointment card among possessions and bones dumped at a building site. He supplies pictures showing items from her bag, including her cross and asthma inhaler, and a coccyx bone. Greg begins five week process to get permission to travel to Malaysia during Covid lockdown.

June 26, 2020 – The worker hands in the possessions to police.

July 3, 2020 – The family is told the lead police investigator has gone on leave for two weeks.

July 29, 2020 – Greg Jenkins finally gets to the construction site and immediately finds one of his mother’s shoes, weeks after police were alerted to the location and were said to have searched it.

August 7, 2020 – Greg finds his mother’s vertebrae and other possessions in the rubble next to the area where police had been searching. Further digging finds more bones and bone fragments

April 12, 2022 – Police give Greg all his mother’s remains to bring home to Australia in a cardboard box filled with bags of bones.

January 23, 2023 – Malaysian coronial inquest sits for a week but is branded a farce by the family after it visits the wrong location and mistakes a bag of gravel and sand for ground up bone fragments. Vital clues for a murder investigation, including a skull fragment showing trauma damage, are destroyed. The findings are due later this month.

February 2023 – SA-BEST MP Frank Pangallo calls for a South Australian coronial inquiry into Anna’s disappearance.

February 2024 – A Malaysian High Court judge throws out Mr Jenkins’ negligence case against the government, the police, the developers, a project manager and a landscape worker.

Following Peter Hitchens last month, Royal Editor Rebecca English will be in the hotseat today from 12pm UK time (8am Eastern Time). Follow our live coverage here and ask your questions in the comments section:

“Do you think Harry is really enjoying his life in the United States?”

REBECCA: Good question, Sam. I think in many ways he certainly seems more content than he ever was as a working royal. On the occasions I spoke to him, he made it clear to me (and many others) that he was not really happy with the life he had, and if it were up to him, he would just run away and work in wildlife conservation in Africa. But he’s burned a lot of bridges along the way. Not only with his family, but with many friends who I know are not happy with the way he left and some of the choices he made. Personally, I would find that difficult.

‘I enjoyed seeing more of the Edinburghs and the Gloucesters, while the King and Princess of Wales were unfortunately ill. Do you think we can still highlight their activities even after HM and HRH return to the public forum? I believe both couples are extremely underrated. They do such fantastic work! Thank you and all the best from Canada!’

REBECCA: Thanks Wendy, and thanks for contacting us from Canada – let’s hope the King can reschedule his visit there later this year! Yes I think so. We’ve gotten more details about their engagements in recent weeks – and been invited to cover them in person – than we have in many years. I think recent events have shown how genuinely interested many people are in the work they do, especially in Edinburgh. They’ve never sought the spotlight, but now that it’s shining on them, they’re happy to make the most of it. Take a look at a video I recorded about Prince Edward to celebrate his 60th birthday, based on an exclusive profile I wrote about him for the Daily Mail last week. I spent a day with the Prince and we talked about a whole range of topics. It’s on ours Daily Mail Royals YouTube channel!

‘What would Diana have thought of the feud between William and Harry? If she were alive today, what would she say to them?’

REBECCA: Honestly, I don’t think things would have gotten this far if Diana hadn’t died. She would have been a glue that held things together. I think it is very difficult for many of us to understand how devastating it was for them to lose their mother at such a young and impressionable age.

File photo dated 21/07/21 of the then Duke of Cambridge (left) and Duke of Sussex arriving for the unveiling of a statue they commissioned for their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, London, on what would have been her 60th birthday. ‘I understand you are protecting your family, but in these terrible times of sleuths and false reporting, surely Prince William and Catherine can share some information that will deter internet sleuths? In your opinion, when do you expect a press release regarding Catherine’s health and return to public duties, and how can their team be more proactive about sharing information?’

REBECCA: Hello Eon, and thank you for your question. The rumors and suspicions we have seen in recent weeks, especially on social media, about the health and well-being of the Princess of Wales are nothing short of despicable. I know, although she doesn’t have her own social media accounts, Catherine is unaware of some of what was said and understandably finds it disturbing. Wales’ attitude was not to respond to the trolls – why give them the oxygen of publicity? Which is understandable in many ways. That said, I believe that Kensington Palace was a bit naive in thinking that one of the most famous women in the world could disappear without a trace for three months without people worrying about her, and that they would rather be more proactive in providing updates should have given. I think this would have clouded the suspicion somewhat. It’s unlikely we’ll hear much more until she’s ready to return to public duties. Last time I checked, this was probably after Easter.

We have been visiting Mallorca for over 20 years and always rent a car, using different companies depending on what is available. However, last October we had a terrible experience.

We rented a car from OK Mobility at Palma de Mallorca airport. When we returned it, an employee went around with a flashlight looking for ‘damage’. She found two small scuff marks on a hubcap. She then asked if we had any photos of it from when we picked up the car.

We said no, which wasn’t surprising because we would have had to get down on our hands and knees with a flashlight to see what she had found.

She promptly said the points would be charged – and when we got home we got a notification saying it would cost £496. This seemed excessively high, so we requested the amount from OK Mobility. Their response was that we took the car without pointing out the damage, so it was on us.

We accept that this is the case to the letter of the law, but we doubt whether this ‘damage’ occurred at all during our rental period, although we realize there is nothing we can do to prove this. Surely such high costs are wrong? We have asked OK Mobility for their repair estimate matrix, which they sent to us, but we have no evidence that this repair work has been completed. We feel like we were charged way too much. Can you help?

Pat and Anthony Smyth, Baldock, Hertfordshire

It is highly recommended that you take out excess insurance when renting a car

The Mail’s holiday guru Mark Palmer responds. This sounds terrible – and it seems you are far from the only ones facing such accusations. Surveys of car rental customers routinely reveal dissatisfaction with “unreliable damage.” Which? Travel recently found that more than 40 percent of respondents said they had been charged for pre-existing scratches and dents.

Fortunately, after writing to us and after many months and emails, you have now received your money back. It took some time, but OK Mobility finally admitted that the damage to the hubcap was already present and that the accusation was ‘incorrect’.

In your case, the company eventually threw up its hands and admitted that its staff had somehow made a mistake and even apologized.

However, it is rare for car rental companies to pull out – and your case underlines the need to always take extra care when renting vehicles. According to the RAC, the key to avoiding ‘misunderstandings’ is to take plenty of time to thoroughly check the vehicle during collection.

This may seem annoying at the start of a holiday, but the RAC recommends taking photos all around, focusing on ‘wear and imperfections’. Pay close attention to the wheels/hubcaps: photos of all four are a good idea. Also take photos of any imperfections in the car.

All this must be done in the presence of a rental car employee, who must record any damage on a schedule sheet. When you’re done, take a photo of this sheet, or request a copy – and also take a photo of the car in its entirety, including the license plate and the number of the parking lot it is parked in. Both the license plate and the lot number in one shot is ideal. This entire process should take no more than ten to fifteen minutes.

If a problem arises upon your return, you will have everything you need. During the drop-off, Which? Travel advises you to have the vehicle inspected in your presence. Then take a photo of the signed damage report.

In the unlikely event that damages are subsequently charged, what? Travel recommends that you request proof of the damage and how the repair costs have been calculated. Of course, if you have photos showing that there is no damage, the car rental company has nothing to fall back on.

Finally, it is highly recommended to take out excess insurance when renting a car. This protects you from automatic excess liability, often up to around £2,500, whether or not you are responsible for the damage to the vehicle.

However, never do this at the car rental desk. It is estimated that insurance from a rental company will cost as much as £205 more per week than if you book independently before you leave. Which? Traveling suggests trying chewinginsurance.com, questor-verzekeringen.nl And rentalcover.com – which came out best in a price comparison. If you rent cars regularly, annual policies are available.

Rishi Sunak boldly claimed he was better at loading the dishwasher than his wife this week.

The Prime Minister even admitted that he tends to repack the dishwasher after his ‘enthusiastic’ wife, Akshata Murty, does so.

But how should you actually load your dishwasher? Is there even a ‘best technique’ for it, or is it just a matter of opinion?

According to experts, the answer is yes. When loading the dishwasher, you should consider the ideal gap between the plates and the correct way to arrange the spoons.

And of course, an age-old question needs to be answered: should you pre-rinse dirty dishes?

For good results, leave a space of approximately 2 cm between the dishes in the dishwasher

Do not pre-wash your dishes in the sink before putting them in the dishwasher as this is a waste of time and water

The Prime Minister and his wife Akshata Murty lifted the lid on their home life, with Rishi saying he often reloads the dishwasher after his ‘enthusiastic’ wife does

Product training manager at appliance manufacturer Miele Sophie Lane explained The times that there is an ‘art’ in loading and unloading the dishwasher.

A well-loaded dishwasher will have items loaded neatly for maximum cleaning performance, but items should not touch each other and it is best to leave a gap of about 2cm (about 3/4″) between your dishes.

This is because you need to place the dirty dishes in a corner so that it catches a jet of water, but without preventing it from reaching your other dirty items. Smaller items are at greater risk of being completely overlooked.

To ensure that your cutlery looks sparkling, it is very important that you do not clump all the items together. For example, if you nest your spoons together, only the front of the top spoon and the back of the back spoon will be completely cleaned.

And if you use a basket – which some experts question whether it is wise to use – if you put similar items in the same places, there is a risk that they will not be washed properly.

She said she and many other dishwasher experts stack their cutlery in a tray instead of a basket for better cleaning.

A cutlery tray, which normally sits at the top of the dishwasher, also means you don’t have to worry about the dilemma of whether to place your knives and forks up, to get them as clean as possible, or down, to get the most clean. the risk of stabbing yourself if you fall on the open tray.

Do not stack your cutlery too close together in the basket, otherwise it will not be washed properly

Do not stack your cutlery too close together in the basket, otherwise it will not be washed properly

And controversially, Ms Lane says pre-rinsing dishes is a waste of time and water. “The dishwasher is there to do that,” she told The Times.

Another general piece of advice is that if your dishwasher looks like it is neatly loaded, it probably is and you are probably getting a good clean.

It also ensures that the rotating dishwasher arm spins quickly so that nothing blocks it when you turn it on.

In 2015, Dr Raul Pérez-Mohedano, who led a University of Birmingham study into the best way to load the dishwasher, concluded that the most efficient way to pack the dishwasher is to circle the cutlery basket (although this is now falling out of the dishwasher). fashion).

Experts made their findings by studying countless cycles, but warned that this could prove difficult due to the way baskets are currently designed.

Dr. Pérez-Mohedano, who led work in the chemical engineering department using a technique known as Positron Emission Particle Tracking, also suggested packaging dishes based on the type of stain they contain.

A 2015 University of Birmingham study found the best way to load the dishwasher at that time

A 2015 University of Birmingham study found the best way to load the dishwasher at that time

He said carbohydrate-based stains such as potato and tomato require the full force of the water jets to get clean, while protein-based foods such as dried egg yolk require more contact with the detergent chemical.

In the study, engineers used radioactive isotopes to track the speed and direction in which the water jets travel when the device is in use.

They discovered that even though the entire inside of the dishwater gets wet during a cycle, it doesn’t necessarily clean everything the same.

This explains why in some cases a particularly stubborn piece of burnt food can be washed off during a wash cycle, while other lighter stains can be baked in.

A FEMALE stingray is pregnant, but the identity of the father remains a mystery.

Charlotte, who lives in a tank at an aquarium in North Carolina, is carrying three to four pups in a 'once-in-a-lifetime scientific mystery' because she reportedly hasn't tanked with a male ray for at least eight years has shared. , according to Team ECCO's Aquarium & Shark Lab.

One explanation behind the mystery is that Charlotte, who is believed to be between 12 and 16 years old, may have reproduced herself, but other experts speculate that she could be carrying 'hybrid' shark babies.

However, Kady Lyons, a researcher at the Georgia Aquarium, shared it Associated press that a hybrid of sharks and rays is not biologically possible.

Although Charlotte is due to give birth any day now, she has gained quite a following as social media users are intrigued by the mysterious pregnancy – and fans are now demanding updates on the aquarium's Instagram page as the account hasn't posted anything about the stingray since yesterday.

“We need an update on Charlotte!” one fan asked in a recent post, while dozens of others asked about Charlotte's well-being and due date in the comments section.

According to the Associated Press, Charlotte is expected to give birth within the next two weeks.

  • Aquarium announced the pregnancy two weeks ago

On February 6, the aquarium announced on Facebook that Charlotte was pregnant.

“Our stingray, Charlotte, is pregnant!” Team ECCO founder Brenda “BJ” Ramer wrote in the after.

“We have held this close to our hearts for over three months. We have had ultrasound images confirmed by two supporters: Dr. Robert Jones, the Aquarium Veterinarian from Australia, and Becka Campbell, PhD candidate at Arizona State Univ.

“The really amazing thing is that we don't have a male ray!” the announcement continued, adding that there are “a number of possible reasons for this event.”

“We hope you'll join us. It's a once-in-a-lifetime scientific mystery,” the post concluded.

  • How Charlotte's pregnancy was revealed

In September, the team of Ecco staff at the Aquarium and Shark Lab in Hendersonville noticed that Charlotte was starting to swell and they were concerned that she might have cancer.

Ultrasounds showed that the stingray was actually pregnant with several young.

A celebrity psychic dramatically threw a Channel 4 film crew out of his home, claiming a new online documentary wrongly 'portrayed his psychic ability as disingenuous'.

Chris Riley, 29, from Essex, who has earned £300,000 from speaking engagements and has a host of celebrity clients including Love Island's Gemma Collins and Maura Higgins, appeared in a brand new episode of Channel 4's YouTube series Life Uncovered.

For the episode Prove To Me You're Psychic, presenter and journalist Ben Zand wanted to know more about Chris's work and how it is scientifically possible to connect with the other side.

However, during filming, Chris asked the crew to leave after he felt the documentary showed “intrusive and disrespectful behavior towards my profession.”

He was shown giving Ben a series of wrong answers during a lecture, but on Instagram Chris claimed that production had 'selectively excluded footage from the programme' and excluded 'a number of positive and accurate parts'.

Celebrity medium Chris Riley, 29, from Essex, who earned more than £300,000 from readings, slammed Channel 4, saying a new documentary 'portrayed his psychic ability as unfair'

In the film, Chris claimed he has made £300,000 by giving 100,000 psychic readings since he started his practice.

Ben followed Chris to some of his readings with clients to understand the spiritual connection, and he even sat in as the medium recorded an Instagram Live to guide his followers.

In one clip, Ben said: “Some people watching this won't believe it's possible. I'd actually like this to be true, so how do we prove that to the public?'

Chris replied, “That's okay, that's absolutely fine. You know I have no problem with someone who doesn't believe. I've done well enough, I don't have a reputation for nothing.'

Later in the episode, Ben received a reading from Chris, and the psychic correctly guessed Ben's mother's name, but the host pointed out that Chris could have easily found the information on social media.

Chris added: “I'm not here to prove this to you, I'm here to tell you how I feel.”

Chris then mentioned a 'Michael' and suggested that Ben has a 'strong male family', but Ben replied that he was 'not right'.

Chris continued asking, “Tell me, siblings?”

When Ben questioned why he had to give this information, Chris said, “Because you're telling me I'm not right, so you can explain.”

Ben admitted that there is a 'Michael', his family: his brother.

Chris continued reading and said he suspected Ben's mother “has health issues and doesn't talk about them.”

Chris then asked if his father was “one of three,” but Ben pointed out that his father was “one of about sixteen kids.”

Frustrated, the medium put his hand to the camera and said, 'You can turn it off. I can not do it. I don't feel like reading any further, sorry.'

Ben asked, “Why is that?” and Chris responded with, “I don't know if you're being honest with me.”

Ben added, “I promise I'm honest. There's no reason for me to lie about it.'

Later, Ben filmed himself sitting in his car saying: 'I just got kicked out of Chris.

'He just felt he was being harassed, regretted it and demanded we give him the footage. I feel bad because he welcomed me too, but it ended in the worst possible way.”

Chris added: 'With almost 15 years dedicated to my work, both as a professional psychic for the public and celebrities, I do not have to justify or prove my abilities to a TV channel and production company that takes a cynical approach to work that I do. and use my profile to attract media attention.

'I believe that this program failed to provide a balanced view of paranormal abilities and seemed intended to embarrass and alienate me, with the advantage of attracting viewers to the channel to to strengthen your own profile.'

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: 'In the YouTube documentary series Life Uncovered Channel 4, journalist Ben Zand exposes the often unconventional lifestyles and careers.

“The scenes in this film are an honest and accurate representation of what was captured as we followed Chris' life and work.”

Over time, untreated hypertension can lead to several complications. Here are six causes you need to know about, one of which is kidney damage

DOCTOR VERIFIED

High Blood Pressure: How Hypertension Can Lead to Kidney Damage? Expert answers

High blood pressure or hypertension is one of the known risk factors for cardiovascular problems, but its impact on the kidneys is often underestimated. Your kidneys and circulatory system depend on each other for good health. The kidneys help filter waste and extra fluid from the blood, using many blood vessels. Over time, untreated hypertension can lead to several complications, including damage to the kidneys. Dr. Puneet Bhuwania, consultant nephrologist and kidney transplant physician discussed six unusual ways in which high blood pressure can affect the kidneys.

High blood pressure and kidney disease

  1. Microvascular damage: The high blood pressure effect extends to the small blood vessels in the kidneys. Capillaries responsible for filtering waste from the blood can become damaged and kidney function is compromised, reducing blood flow and accelerating the progression of kidney disease.
  2. Decreased filtration capacity: Long-term high blood pressure takes a toll on the filtration process of the kidneys. These vital organs struggle to filter blood efficiently, which impacts their ability to maintain electrolyte and fluid balances that are crucial to the body's overall function and causes a variety of kidney problems.
  3. Kidney stone formation: The increased pressure changes the composition of urine, leading to the formation of crystals and the development of kidney stones.
  4. Exacerbation of proteinuria: did you know? Proteinuria is characterized by excess protein in the urine and becomes a problem for people with high blood pressure. The link between hypertension and kidney health becomes apparent because increased pressure causes proteinuria, which is a warning sign of possible kidney problems.
  5. Atherosclerosis Impact: The link between high blood pressure and atherosclerosis involves the kidneys. Atherosclerosis means the hardening and narrowing of the arteries, disrupting blood flow to the kidneys and contributing to kidney dysfunction.
  6. Hormonal imbalance: Hypertension disrupts the production of hormones that are crucial for kidney and heart function.

Understanding these less common but impactful ways that high blood pressure affects the kidneys underscores the need for proactive management. Regular checkups, lifestyle adjustments, and taking prescribed medications become essential to avoid the risks associated with high blood pressure and maintain kidney health.

Ukrainian officials sought answers Thursday into the circumstances of a deadly plane crash over the border with Russia, asking for patience from citizens as they investigated Moscow's claims that Ukraine had shot down a Russian military plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war.

President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine called on his country's intelligence service to determine what happened and for an international investigation into the crash, while also accusing Russia of war propaganda about the event.

The plane crashed in the Belgorod region near the border with Ukraine, killing everyone on board, the Russian Defense Ministry and the regional governor said on Wednesday. The ministry said the plane had carried 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war, who would be released through a prisoner exchange. The Russian claims could not be independently verified.

The cause of the crash remains unknown, although Ukrainian officials have not denied shooting down the plane. They say they cannot confirm that Ukrainian soldiers on their way to a prisoner exchange were on board the plane.

But Ukrainian military intelligence on Wednesday hinted at the possibility of a tragic mistake, acknowledging that a prisoner swap was planned and saying in a statement that Russia had not warned the Ukrainian military that prisoners of war were being transported to the border – as it had in previous exchanges.

Either way, the episode poses a difficult challenge for a Kiev government trying to prepare its citizens for a third year of war and considering a new mobilization that would likely be unpopular at home. At the same time, Ukraine finds itself on the defensive on the battlefield and strives daily to shore up much-needed Western support.

Officials in Kiev have said it is too early to draw conclusions about the crash and that relatives should wait for confirmation from authorities in Ukraine. “We have not seen any sign of this number of people on board the plane, whether they are Ukrainian citizens or not,” Dmytro Lubinets, the country's human rights ombudsman, told news media on Thursday.

Complicating any investigation by Ukraine is the fact that Russia has most of the key details about the episode, including who was on board. Ukrainians are deeply skeptical of information coming from Russia, which they say is determined to turn the crash into a painful ordeal for prisoners' families.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry S. Peskov again claimed on Thursday that Ukraine had shot its own soldiers, calling it a “monstrous act.”

Groups that monitor Russian propaganda say Moscow is sending a message aimed at the West: that Ukraine cannot be trusted with long-range weapons. Russians posting on social networking sites have blamed Ukraine for killing its own people.

“It is clear that Russians are tampering with the lives of Ukrainian prisoners, the feelings of their relatives and the emotions of our society,” Zelensky said in his late-night video address on Wednesday.

The Institute for the Study of War, a US-based organization, wrote in an analysis that Russian propagandists “seized the Il-76 crash to sow domestic discontent in Ukraine and undermine Western will to continue military support for Ukraine to give.”

No independent groups have visited the crash site. The United Nations and the Red Cross did not immediately respond Thursday to questions about gaining access to the site.

Neither the Ukrainian military nor the domestic intelligence agency that Mr. Zelensky asked to investigate the crash had released information about the incident as of early Thursday.

“The microphone is in Russia's hands,” said Hanna Chabarai, an analyst of Russian propaganda at the Institute of Mass Information, an independent organization in Ukraine. “This is emotional terrorism because relatives and friends of prisoners of war are very afraid.”

A lack of clarity has been a hallmark of Russia's war in Ukraine, not only because of the obscurity of what is happening on the battlefield, but also because Russia uses misinformation for propaganda purposes at home and abroad. Ukraine is also reluctant to make public any military setbacks. Tragedies and turning points in the war are sometimes overshadowed by uncertainty for weeks or longer.

A July 2022 explosion at the Olenivka camp for Ukrainian prisoners of war killed at least 51 prisoners, prompting a months-long effort by Ukraine and international organizations to determine what happened.

Russia claimed that Ukraine had hit the site with an American-supplied missile. But a United Nations investigation ultimately determined that a U.S. missile could not have hit the site and accused Russia of holding prisoners of war near the front line.

Maria Varenikova And Ivan Nechepurenko reporting contributed.

What is it about air travel that can turn even the most reasonable people into beings of supreme self-interest? This was best illustrated in an image that went viral last week, of a woman lounging with her trainer-clad feet propped up on the headrest of the seat in front.

Of course, the lack of space, proximity to others, and the frustration of delayed arrival or departure pose challenges to civilized behavior. But are there red lines we still shouldn't cross?

1. NO bare feet

It's bad enough to put dirty shoes on the chair. “But an equally no-no is removing socks and shoes, even if the feet remain where they should be: on the floor,” says etiquette consultant, author and former Debrett's lecturer Jo Bryant.

After all, who wants to look at horrible, gnarled trotters? Even if you keep your podiatrist on speed dial, sitting or walking around the booth barefoot is still the epitome of bad manners.

An image that went viral last week shows a woman lounging with her sneaker-clad feet on the headrest of the seat in front of them during a Delta flight

For more comfort, pack a pair of slippers or flight socks in your carry-on — “and never use the armrest as a footrest between the seats in front of you, with your toes sticking through,” says Bryant.

2. DON'T FIGHT OVER THE ARMREST

Think of it as a dividing line rather than a battlefield. The courteous response is to allow middle seat passengers to use the armrests as they are placed on the bookends by fellow travelers.

“Otherwise, you can enter carefully by just placing your elbow on it so your neighbor can do the same,” says etiquette expert and author William Hanson.

3. DO NOT PACKAGE SHARP SNACKS

The hut is not the place for sulphurous egg sandwiches, tart citrus or spicy curry salads. Choose mild choices such as chocolate, crackers or soft fruit. For easy, packable stomach fillers, protein bars are also a good choice.

4. STAY IN YOUR LANE

Never enter the designated areas of your fellow passengers. You don't have to stretch out with your feet stretched out under the seat of the person in front of you or throw sweaters over the seat behind them. Also keep the space around you – small bags, magazines and all your other in-flight essentials – as tidy as possible.

“If the person next to you falls asleep and you want to get up or he or she is slumped over, gently tap him or her. Under no circumstances should you attempt to clamber over it; you wake them up and find yourself in an embarrassing situation,” Hanson says.

5. NO PERSONAL CARE

Traveling by plane means that fellow passengers are an interested audience for your personal habits. But keep your physical care strictly to yourself.

“This is not the place to clip nails, pluck eyebrows, spray on deodorant or do anything that comes close to personal grooming,” says Bryant. If you need to prepare and prune, do it in the laundry room.

6. ALLOW DRIVERS TO CONTINUE THEIR WORK

Unless you need to answer a call of nature, you will remain in your seat while the cabin crew is performing onboard service. And be unwaveringly charming. As the saying goes, 'You win more wars with honey'.

So, says Bryant, “be patient if things move slower than you want. Smile, greet them warmly, sit down and let them do their work.” When you leave, also take the time to thank them.

Even small children may have difficulty negotiating their food if the seat in front of them is tilted back, so try not to lean back until the food is served

Even small children may have difficulty negotiating their food if the seat in front of them is tilted back, so try not to lean back until the food is served

7. DO NOT LOWER YOUR SEAT DURING THE MEAL

Even small children may have difficulty negotiating their food if the front seat is reclined. 'Be considerate of those behind you and do not lie back minutes after take-off. If possible, wait until after the meal and only fully recline if absolutely necessary.'

Remember that it is your prerogative to sit back, so a quick glance with a smile on the lips to check that the table top is not behind you is a polite gesture.

8. WAIT YOUR TURN BEFORE disembarking

Hitting the tarmac is not a signal to get up immediately or jump over the heads of other equally tired, bored and impatient passengers. This is not the school bell. The doors aren't even open yet. All you're doing is shoving your derriere in the faces of others who, sensibly, remain seated.

'Have others take items from the lockers and filter them out of the plane row by row. And always help those who cannot easily reach the lockers,” Hanson said. “If you're that desperate for a quick exit, pay for a seat near the front.”

'Have others take items from the lockers and filter them out of the plane row by row. And always help those who can't easily reach the lockers, says William Hanson

'Have others take items from the lockers and filter them out of the plane row by row. And always help those who cannot easily reach the lockers,” says William Hanson

The advice is: don't rearrange other passengers' luggage to make room for your own luggage

The advice is: don't rearrange other passengers' luggage to make room for your own luggage

9. DO NOT OVERLOAD THE OVERHEADLOCKER

Avoid unnecessarily spreading your duty-free stock in the cabin area. And don't rearrange other passengers' luggage to make room for your own.

The courteous thing you can do is to place your carry-on luggage sensibly, making the most of the overhead space, and place any other unnecessary items (and whatever you need during the flight) under the seat in front of you.

10. Whether or not to change seats

You bought and paid for your seat because you like to watch the world go by outside the airplane window. So should you trade places with someone who is separated from his or her child or partner? Frankly, it is a matter of choice and not obligation.

Just like you should think twice before asking another passenger to switch seats. “And if you do, make sure it's a fair exchange, like an aisle seat for another,” Hanson says.

11. STORY THE CHATTER

Some people like to talk to complete strangers during a flight. If you don't feel like chatting, bury your head in a book, put on headphones (even if they're not on), close your eyes, or respond monosyllabically but politely when asked a question. “Don't be afraid to say, 'I'm sorry to be so antisocial, but I'm just going to close my eyes/catch up on this book or movie,'” Hanson suggests.

…and here's what's really annoying the cabin crew – by a former British Airways flight attendant

FOLD your coat and place it in an empty upper cupboard and then close it. Believe me. That space is needed for the luggage of other passengers.

PROVERB: 'You've got to love Venice/Dubrovnik/Barcelona', or wherever we're going. Most days we don't get off the plane until we've brought a new group of passengers home. So don't rub it.

WAITING until we get to you before we ask indecisive children, “What do you want to drink?” Parents who ask in advance, tell us clearly, and then quickly walk us down the aisle are our favorites.

TO ORDER from the menu during the flight and then realize that your wallet or purse is in the overhead bin. It's a race to serve everyone as it is. Please don't delay us.

TO ASK: 'Should I make my connecting flight?' Most days we can barely remember where we're flying, let alone what time we're supposed to land.

TO GET angry when we wake you up on a night flight because we can't see your seat belt. It is a legal obligation to control turbulence. Announcements say you have to put seat belts over blankets for a reason.

TO ASK to view something from the depths of the Duty Free trolley. Then you don't buy it.

MOANTS about the meals. It wasn't us who made the salad so small. Or opt for those microscopic packs of pretzels.

STANDING before the fasten seat belt sign is turned off. We hate to pick up the PA and tell everyone to stay put – but we could get fired if we don't.

SARCASTIC comments about delays when getting off the plane. Believe me, we want to go home or to our hotel as much as you do.
