A woman’s arm broke after she got into an arm-wrestling fight with a complete stranger, and a year later the arm still hasn’t fully recovered.

Daisy Johnson, 24, from London, was celebrating Easter with her friends when she decided to take on a man in an intense arm wrestling match.

The 24-year-old suffered a spiral fracture of her humerus, a bone in the upper arm that connects to the shoulder, and was in severe pain for the next few days.

She said: ‘There was a conversation about the subject of gym and my ears perked up. This led to the friendly match after I declared that, ironically, I could “beat anyone in an arm wrestle.” My arm felt like the limp arm in Harry Potter!

‘The pain started to increase as the adrenaline wore off. The humerus then had to be manipulated back together, which was extremely painful!’

Daisy was celebrating Easter Sunday with her friends at the local pub when a complete stranger from a nearby table came over and struck up a conversation with the group – and once the gym came up, she decided to join in.

One thing led to another, and Daisy then challenged the stranger to an arm wrestle, confident she would beat him, and the pair started their fight on the table.

Shockingly, Daisy’s arm broke during the struggle, with an unmistakable cracking sound, and she was rushed to hospital.

She spent four days there after her broken arm was manipulated back into place and recovered with the help of painkillers.

Normally the fitness fanatic spends most of her time in the gym, but with her broken arm that was not possible and she spent the following months trying to regain her strength.

To start, she focused mainly on other parts of the gym while her arm was in a sling, and once she was ready, she started trying to get her arm repaired.

However, after a year she still feels like her arm has not fully recovered and even says it is ‘slightly deformed’ and ‘shorter’ than her other arm – but she is still determined to get back on track come.

She said: ‘At the time I thought I had just dislocated my elbow joint and I was convinced that as soon as someone put it back in I could go back to the pub!

‘Everyone thought I was joking because I was pretty sure I had done something and had to go to hospital, until realizing that my arm looked visually deformed, everyone quickly realized I wasn’t joking.

‘I had to hold it against my chest, otherwise it would literally swing around loosely. I spent about four days in the hospital on a ton of morphine.

‘It was frustrating. As a girl who spends most of her time in the gym strength training, it was mentally difficult for me to have to completely change my training.

‘However, no fitness journey will ever be without challenges and once I accepted this and viewed my injury as a challenge, I was able to make the most progress.

‘I discarded the sling about three months after surgery, but it took months before I got to the point where I could put body weight on the injured arm.

‘After a year of recovery, the arm is still not completely back to how it was and I’m not sure if it will regain its original mobility, strength and range of motion.

‘Visually the injured arm is slightly deformed and therefore shorter than the good arm. But I would like to get stronger every day.’

He alleged that the BJP has been speaking “lies” on all issues and is on its way out.

The former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh lashed out at the BJP government in the state over the Budaun double murder in which two minor boys were killed, adding that the lives of two brothers had been lost and the lives could have been saved if the police had worked properly. .

“They cannot hide their shortcomings, this encounter will not hide their failure,” Yadav said, referring to the encounter of one of the suspects soon after the murder of the two young boys in Budaun.

Referring to some of the recent incidents, Yadav said the government should act later and remove officials.

“The government was lax because this government wants to gain political advantage from every incident. If their ministers, MLAs and entire departments are involved in other works, how will they make arrangements to improve the situation?” he asked.

Referring to the electoral bonds, he called them “not a donation but an extortion”.

When asked about the Congress candidates for the upcoming elections, he said it is an internal matter of that party and emphasized that his party will fairly support the candidates fielded by the Congress.

The Samajwadi Party has given 17 seats to the Congress and has decided to contest the remaining 63 seats alone and along with some other allies.

The Samajwadi Party will soon release the list of remaining candidates, Yadav said.

Sailor, a content creator, shared Plymouth Live: “My QR code is my top favorite. It is the most requested.

“In my friendship group we had rickrolled each other. I wanted to outdo everyone. Random people ask if they can scan my arm.

“In the club I let DJs scan my arm. Everyone is obsessed with it.”

The entertaining tattoo took four hours to complete as each ink spot had to be precise for the code to be scanned.

Sailor paid £200 for the bizarre artwork, but claimed it was totally worth it.

“Usually someone walking by says, ‘Wow, that’s so cool, can I scan it?’ Then they burst out laughing when it plays,” she said.

The Rick Astley tattoo is just one of 97 covering her body, after she became ‘instantly addicted’ when she first got it at the age of 18.

They range from flowers to Freddie Mercury and she even braved a face tattoo after seeing a coffee barista with the same one.

Sailor said: “I got a face tattoo after I met a girl at Starbucks and thought ‘wow, that’s beautiful’. I thought: f**k it, I’m going to do it.

“I absolutely love it.”

The 28-year-old considers her tattoo collection a ‘timeline’ of her life – despite some people calling it ‘abnormal’.

“Who wants to be normal? Normal is boring. I’m going to have fun with life. I don’t want to live my life with any regrets,” Sailor added.

It comes as another man got a unique QR code tattooed on his arm – for a hilarious reason.

An absent-minded dad who kept forgetting his Tesco Clubcard has now had the QR code written on him forever.

Dean Mayhew, 30, was fed up with missing out on savings so spent four hours under the needle.

The scaffolder, a father-of-seven, is now also considering whether he should have his Sainsbury’s Nectar card code done too.

Dean, from Horsham, West Sussex, said: ‘Sometimes I’m not the brightest of them all, but my friends think it’s quite brilliant. I have seven children and I’m in the supermarket all the time, probably three times a day.”

A father-of-two almost lost his arm due to a waterborne bacteria that entered his bloodstream during a dive during his annual Christmas holiday.

Andrew Emmerig, 48, from Warner in Brisbane, was on holiday on the Sunshine Coast, south-east Queensland, in December with his wife and two young sons.

He was staying at Cotton Tree Caravan Park when he noticed a small bump on his right bicep, which developed into a serious bacterial infection within hours.

Mr Emmerig was admitted to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with “gastrosymptoms”, he said, and a stabbing pain in his arm.

“It felt like a fire under my arm, especially in the elbow,” he said Cairns Post.

He claimed doctors wanted to send him home with a course of antibiotics before a surgeon stepped in to take a closer look at Mr Emmerig’s arm.

Mr Emmerig was moved to intensive care and put into a coma during his two weeks in hospital as surgeons fought to save his arm.

Specialists diagnosed strep, a painful and rapidly spreading skin infection, which removed the flesh from his arm and exposed the muscles and veins beneath.

Mr Emmerig said his ravaged arm looked ‘disgusting’ and admitted the possibility of losing his arm was ‘terrifying’.

But after four separate operations on the limb, amputation was finally ruled out.

“I was worried, but they said life is the most important thing… first save my life, then we can try to save my arm,” he said.

Nearly three months and eight operations later, he still has no feeling in his arm and years of rehabilitation ahead of him.

He said not being able to work has taken a toll on his mental health, but he is grateful he has had access to “incredibly good” healthcare.

Mr Emmerig said he will never fully regain feeling or full range of motion, but is lucky to have survived.

“My blood pressure dropped to zero twice and I almost died, it was very serious,” he said.

This comes after an Australian woman was told to have her leg amputated after a swim at another beach on the Sunshine Coast.

Celeste Stirrup, 52, was swimming with her granddaughter at Bulcock Beach when she contracted cellulitis from a mosquito bite on her leg.

She told Daily Mail Australia that her leg “looked like a piece of beef hanging in a butcher’s box” and that the past few months had felt like a “crazy nightmare”.

With the school holidays just around the corner and thousands of people expected to flock to Queensland beaches, Stirrup has issued an urgent warning to anyone heading into the water.

‘This shouldn’t happen to anyone. “A lot of people think salt water is healing, but if you have a bite or a cut, maybe you shouldn’t go swimming,” she said.

Ms Stirrup questions the water quality at some of the region’s most popular beaches and calls for action to be taken.

“When ocean water is captured and collected and cannot flow in and out, it is called brackish water and it is perfect for bacteria to grow and thrive and is not good for swimming,” she said.

“The public should be made aware that this is not good water and there should be a warning sign.”

Daily Mail Australia has contacted the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation with questions about water quality at some beaches on the Sunshine Coast.

A department spokesperson said no specific water quality surveys are currently being conducted in these areas.

The Princess of Wales’ Mother’s Day photo has suffered an awkward editing fail.

The picture, showing Kate Middleton, 42, alongside her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

But eagled-eyed fans spotted that the sleeve of Princess Charlotte’s arm didn’t line-up.

It comes after the royals’ Christmas card also suffered a photoshop fail after Prince Louis was left without a middle finger.  

 The monochrome image shows the royal couple smiling alongside their sons Prince George, ten, Prince Louis, five, and Princess Charlotte, eight, who is seated in a chair at the front of the group, with Louis’ hand resting on the arm.

But in an apparent editing fail, Louis seems to be missing the middle finger on his left hand.

Kate has stepped back from royal duties since she was admitted to The London Clinic for ‘planned abdominal surgery’ on January 16.

Today, she shared a photo alongside her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, with fans commenting on how the royal looks like she is recovering well.

It may be a hint that Kate will return to action around Easter, and not as late as Trooping of the Colour in June.

Earlier this week, the Army backtracked on claims the Princess of Wales will attend June’s Trooping the Colour after accusations officials ‘jumped the gun’ without consulting the Palace.

Tickets had gone on sale via the army website advertising Kate, 42, reviewing a ‘practice’ parade for the first time on June 8 in her role as honorary colonel of the Irish Guards.

It also announced that Charles, 75, would be reviewing his own official birthday parade on June 15 at Horse Guards.

But within minutes of the tickets going on sale, there were warnings that the MoD may have ‘jumped the gun’.

Kensington Palace sources made clear that they were ‘not consulted’ on the MoD announcement and said that any confirmed attendance by the princess would be made ‘only’ by themselves.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that planning for future engagements was continuing despite the King’s ongoing cancer treatment yet stressed that changes could be made nearer the time depending on his health. 

Kensington Palaces broken their silence on Kate Middleton conspiracy theories earlier in the week.

A palace spokesman said the Prince of Wales is focusing ‘on his work and not on social media’.

Although officials have refused to give any further updates on Kate Middleton’s health due to medical privacy, royal aids have insisted she is ‘doing well’. 

The photo of  the Princess of Wales has been branded ‘playful’ and shows her as ‘protective’ of her children, a body language expert has claimed.

Speaking exclusively to FEMAIL, Judi James said that Kate Middleton, 42, looked ‘authentic’ while her clothes showed a ‘relaxed happiness’.

The photos appear to show that the Princess is recovering well after undergoing surgery in January. 

Kensington Palace released the first official photo of the Princess of Wales since her surgery as she thanked the public for their support in a Mother’s Day message on Sunday morning. 

The royal is seen beaming with her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in a picture taken by her husband, Prince William, at their home in Windsor.

‘Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother’s Day,’ the Princess of Wales said, signing off the message with a ‘C’ for Catherine. 

Speaking today, Judi said the picture shows how the royal is one the mend. 

‘There are so many reassuring non-verbal messages of continuity, relaxed happiness and even increasingly-restored good health here, as well as some even more telling ones of shared emotion,’ Judi said.

‘The pose itself, the styling and the colours chosen, look deliberately traditional and even signature for the family. 

‘This is the type of photograph the Wales’s have posed for before, with heather-mix blues, greens and purple Fairisle knits and checks seeming to announce very little has changed and order and continuity has thankfully been restored,’ she added.

Opting for £250 Chloe Combat boots, which she’s worn several times before, Kate looked natural in jeans, a black polo neck and bottle green jacket.

Meanwhile, both Prince George and Princess Charlotte wore jumpers from French brand Cyrillus official.

Charlotte wore and adorable red Cotton and Cashmere Cardigan with a checked skirt and cotton tights while George wore a Lambswool Jumper in Kaki and jeans.

Kate went entirely without jewellery in the photo, in an unusual move for the royal, but Judi suggested that this could hint at her getting better.    

‘Kate’s choice of casual clothing seems to hint at restored levels of health. Her lace-up boots, jeans and zip-up jacket all imply she’s off for a long Mother’s Day walk after the session. 

‘Even the way she crosses her legs at the ankle suggests energy rather than a desire to sit still,’ she added.

Wearing her hair long and loose, Kate beamed as she sat with her three children at home in Windsor.

She opted for a natural make-up look with a creamy foundation and subtle lip gloss.

‘In terms of the body language it’s a relief for the fans (and the country) to see the joy and the sense of playful family fun are still firmly in place,’ Judi added.

‘Kate might be sitting but she’s the one with her protective arms around her two younger children and Kate’s smile is far more telling than her normal signature, pitch-perfect ‘”royal” smile. 

‘This is an authentic, dimpled version with no signs of forcing or rigidity.

‘Her sparkling eye expression, which is aimed at her husband William behind the camera, suggests their usual levels of shared humour are still very much a thing.

‘George has his arms looped around his mother’s neck as though keen to protect her but this is also a pose he’s used frequently on his father and the children look relaxed enough to imply nobody is feeling any wariness or need to treat Kate as overly-fragile. 

‘Their open-mouthed laughs look congruent enough to imply genuine playfulness that appears prompted by William from behind the lens,’.

The princess’ absence from royal engagements since the Christmas Day church service at Sandringham has led to huge speculation on social media – but the positive Mother’s Day update has been warmly welcomed by royal fans.

Buckingham Palace also shared a photo of the King with his late mother Queen Elizabeth II to mark Mother’s Day. Charles is seen kissing his mother’s hand after a polo match in 1985.

Kensington Palace confirmed Kate’s surgery was successful and on January 29, she returned to Adelaide Cottage in Windsor to be reunited with her children almost two weeks after having the surgery.

Last Monday, she was photographed for the first time since the medical procedure after US gossip website TMZ published pictures of her being driven around Windsor with her mother, Carole Middleton.

In the photo, Kate was wearing dark sunglasses and sat in the passenger seat of a black 4×4 Audi. 

The pictures were not published in the UK after Kensington Palace appealed for her to be able to recuperate in private. 

Days later, Carole’s brother – and Kate’s uncle – Gary Goldsmith revealed on Celebrity Big Brother that her niece was getting the ‘best care in the world’.

Love Island winner Ekin-Su Culculoglu asked Goldsmith on Wednesday’s episode: ‘Where’s Kate?’

He replied: ‘Because she doesn’t want to talk about… The last thing I’m going to do is… there’s a kind of code of etiquette. If it’s announced, I’ll give you an opinion.’ 

Kate’s ‘black sheep’ uncle added: ‘I spoke to her mum, my sister, she’s getting the best care in the world.

The confusion has added to the sense of unease around the Royal Family, given that two of its most senior members are largely out of action for substantial periods.

Insiders have said, given the profile of the occasions, that it is likely that both the monarch and his daughter-in-law would do everything within their power to attend.

On Friday, the Prince of Wales visited the Oval cricket ground as he continues to carry out engagements while his wife and his father recover.

But his absence from his godfather’s memorial at Windsor Castle last month for a ‘personal matter’  led to increased speculation about his wife’s health.

The Palace has said that based on the current medical advice Kate was unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.

A spokesman stated that it was Kate’s personal wish to keep her personal medical information private and said it would only provide an update if there were ‘significant new information to share’.

William has been juggling royal duties with supporting Kate and helping care for George, Charlotte, and Louis.

Queen Camilla has led the royals at other events amid a slimmed-down monarchy – with Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Sophie also helping out. 

Tomorrow, William will attend an event at immersive art venue Frameless in the Marble Arch area of London’s West End, celebrating The Earthshot Prize ‘Launchpad’ project. 

This is a new online matchmaking platform for Earthshot projects which can be accessed by investors and philanthropists looking to co-invest and collaborate on environmental ideas.

Kensington Palace said that since 2021, the Earthshot Prize has awarded £15million of prize money and the network has helped unlock £50million of support via its network, for the 45 winners and finalists.

Also on Monday, Camilla and William are to attend the annual Commonwealth Day service, joined by remaining members of the slimmed-down monarchy.

With the King and Kate away from public-facing duties, the rest of the institution’s working royals will gather in force at Westminster Abbey.

Camilla and William will be accompanied by Edward, Sophie and Anne along with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent.

A pre-recorded video message from Head of the Commonwealth, Charles, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, will be played during the service this year, Buckingham Palace said.

The annual celebration will draw on the theme of resilience – at a time when the royal family has faced a barrage of health troubles.

But the service will focus on stories of environmental resilience and marine sustainability, through performances representing the five regions of the Commonwealth.

William’s appearance at the televised event – a key part of the royal calendar – alongside Camilla comes after he pulled out of attending his godfather King Constantine of Greece’s memorial service last week at the last minute due to an undisclosed personal matter.

The mystery woman on the arm of paralyzed former NRL player Alex McKinnon could be revealed as a glamorous young social worker ten years his junior.

Former Newcastle Knights player McKinnon, 32, and fellow Newcastle University student Lily Malone, 22, both shared an image with their arms around each other on their Instagram pages on Sunday.

McKinnon posted the photo of them both dressed in pink at Malone’s 22nd birthday party just hours before the NRL season opener kicked off in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Moments later, Malone debuted McKinnon on her own Instagram page, sharing the same photo with a love heart emoji.

Malone’s mother Monique did not deny the pair were an item when contacted by Daily Mail Australia on Monday.

“I’m not going to comment on their relationship, that’s for them to comment on,” Ms. Malone said.

Lily Malone is studying for a bachelor’s degree in social work at Newcastle University. McKinnon studies psychology there and works as an analyst for Fox Sports.

Malone – who works as a family liaison officer at Life Without Barriers – recently revealed she will soon become a qualified social worker.

“Working with a small, dedicated team, I have developed an eight-session program tailored to the unique needs of “parents of young offenders within a domestic violence context,” she recently posted on her LinkedIn page.

McKinnon’s romance comes after he split from ex-wife Teigan Power in January 2022 after five years of marriage, three children and his own horrific on-field foot accident that left him paralyzed.

When they split, both parties confirmed that the split was amicable and that they remained committed to co-parenting their children, twins Audrey and Violet, and eldest daughter Harriet.

Power announced her new love Jake Nelson at the end of last year.

Last year, McKinnon said he and Power were still connected by a strong, close friendship.

“We are still very close,” he told News Corp.

‘Being a parent is such an important job and having a strong relationship with their mother is just as important.

‘We are still good friends, we both realize that we are role models for the children and we have to show them that supporting each other is the only way to be that.’

McKinnon proposed to his high school sweetheart from his hospital bed just days after his promising NRL career was cut short in March 2014 when he suffered a devastating spinal cord injury in a horrific on-field accident. He was only 22.

He suffered fractures to his C4 and C5 vertebrae after a dangerous tackle just before half-time of a Round 3 match against the Melbourne Storm. McKinnon proposed to Power just a fortnight after breaking his spine.

McKinnon and Power married in October 2017 in an intimate ceremony in the NSW Hunter Valley.

The former Knights star promised his bride that he would get up from his wheelchair when he popped the question, and he did just that at their wedding.

The couple was together for 12 years and married for five years before their relationship quietly ended.

McKinnon’s father Scott told Daily Mail Australia at the time that McKinnon “did well, but it’s really sad – what can you do?”

“I know he’s a good boy, but Alex is a private guy.

“It’s just very, very sad.”

Queen Letizia of Spain put on an elegant display as she joined her husband, King Felipe VI memorial service for the late King Constantine of Greece bee Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

The European monarch, 51, looked solemn in a navy blue knee-length dress, which she teamed with matching heels and a scarf.

The mother-of-two arrived arm in arm with her husband King Felipe, whose mother is Queen Sofia, 85, Constantine’s older sister.

Felipe himself also cut a statuesque figure in a black long coat and also added a formal gray scarf as the couple put on a united performance.

The royals had flown in from Spain for the occasion, with Letizia adding a black scarf to combat the cold British weather.

Once inside St. George’s Chapel, the couple sat with King Juan Carlos of Spain and Princess Benedkeek of Denmark.

King Felipe last met the British royal family when he attended the Wimbledon men’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic – and both Letizia and Felipe were guests at last year’s coronation.

The British royal family last hosted a state visit to the Spanish royal family in 2017.

Today’s service will be attended by several ruling houses of Europe.

The Prince of Wales, 41, was expected to give a reading at his late godfather’s service but pulled out at the last minute due to personal reasons.

William called the Greek royal family to apologize, while Kensington Palace confirmed the Princess of Wales is “doing well” as she continues her recovery from abdominal surgery at home.

Today’s service in St. George’s Chapel is held in honor of King Charles’ close friend and great-nephew, Constantine II, the former ruler of Greece.

Greece’s last king died on January 10 last year at the age of 82 after months of illness – more than 50 years after he was exiled in a military coup.

The late king – the only son of King Paul and Queen Frederica – was also the Duke of Edinburgh’s cousin and Prince William’s godfather.

Prince Andrew was spotted with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson at the Thanksgiving service.

It is understood the Duke of York is attending as a member of the British Royal Family and was invited by the Greek Royal Family.

King Constantine’s funeral was attended by Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, in January 2023.

Constantine became king of Greece in 1964, but was ousted from the throne when the monarchy was abolished in 1973.

King Charles is not expected to attend his memorial service in Windsor after retiring from public life following his cancer diagnosis.

Camilla’s role in the agency will see her take charge again as she tries to take the pressure off her husband.

Members of the royal family have rallied behind the king, with Prince William returning to his duties after spending time caring for his wife, Princess Kate.

Due to a separate health crisis, the Princess of Wales was admitted to the London Clinic for a planned abdominal operation, and will be unable to fulfill royal duties until at least Easter.

Last month, Greece’s royal family put on a somber display as they attended a memorial service to mark one year since the death of King Constantine.

He died “of a stroke”, local media reported, after several hospital admissions in the previous months.

High-profile royals including Constantine’s son Crown Prince Pavlos and Dowager Queen Anne Marie attended a private ceremony at the former summer palace of Tatoi, just outside Athens.

Terwijl ze door de winterse omstandigheden slenterden, waren Zara’s blonde lokken door de wind geteisterd, hoewel ze een hoed droeg die hielp haar opgestoken haar op zijn plaats te houden.

De koninklijke familie, 42, liep naast haar man, 45, moeder en stiefvader, vice-admiraal Sir Tim Laurence, terwijl ze de herdenkingsdienst voor de neef van koning Charles bijwoonden.

Ze werd vergezeld door de hertog en hertogin van York en leden van het koninklijk huis van over de hele wereld, waaronder koningin Letizia en koning Felipe, terwijl koning Charles afwezig blijft op het evenement omdat hij een kankerbehandeling ondergaat. Prins William, de peetzoon van wijlen Constantijn, trok zich op het laatste moment terug uit het evenement vanwege ‘persoonlijke redenen’.

Toen ze bij de Thanksgiving-dienst aankwamen, koos Zara voor een marineblauwe jasjurk en hoed, terwijl Mike een marineblauwe stropdas koos.

De dienst is geen begrafenis en daarom is het dragen van zwart niet verplicht. Bezoekers kiezen er echter vaak voor om zwarte of donkere kleuren, zoals marineblauw, te dragen.

Het optreden van het echtpaar bij de dienst volgt op een reis naar IJsland waarin ze leken te duiken, geisers bezochten en het landschap verkenden.

Mike plaatste een fragment op zijn Instagram-pagina met fragmenten van de reis, inclusief lieve selfies van hemzelf en Zara, warm ingepakt in het ijskoude weer.

Het was onduidelijk of het echtpaar hun drie kinderen, Mia, 10, Lena, vijf, en Lucas, twee, meenam.

Bij afwezigheid van de Prins van Wales en koning Charles leidde koningin Camilla in plaats daarvan leden van de koninklijke familie tijdens het evenement.

Er zijn geen verdere details gegeven over de afwezigheid van William, en het is niet bekend of dit verband houdt met het voortdurende herstel van zijn vrouw Kate Middleton na haar buikoperatie vorige maand.

De Prins van Wales, die een lezing zou houden, belde de familie om zich te verontschuldigen, terwijl Kensington Palace bevestigde dat Kate ‘het goed deed’ terwijl ze thuis herstelt.

Constantijn II van Griekenland, die in januari 2023 stierf, was de peetvader van Willem. Kate zal na haar operatie tot na Pasen wegblijven van officiële koninklijke verlovingen.

Prins Andrew was vandaag aanwezig samen met Sarah, hertogin van York en zijn dochter prinses Beatrice, omdat het als een persoonlijk familie-evenement werd beschouwd.

Er wordt ook aangenomen dat de hertog van York de dienst bijwoonde als lid van de Britse koninklijke familie en was uitgenodigd door de Griekse koninklijke familie.

Wat Charles betreft, hij was eerder op de dag in Windsor Castle, maar vertrok voordat de dienst begon – waarna de receptie zou worden georganiseerd door Camilla.

De dienst van vandaag in de Sint-Joriskapel werd gehouden ter ere van de goede vriend en achterneef van de koning, Constantijn II, de voormalige heerser en laatste koning van Griekenland.

De koning heeft naar verluidt spiritueel advies ingewonnen bij zijn vriend Archimandrite Ephraim, abt van het Grieks-orthodoxe Vatopedi-klooster op de berg Athos.

Constantijn was een neef en zeilpartner van wijlen hertog van Edinburgh, en stierf in januari vorig jaar op 82-jarige leeftijd, tientallen jaren nadat hij bij een militaire staatsgreep van de troon was gestoten.

De koning had een hechte vriendschap met Constantijn en koos hem als peetvader voor zijn zoon William, nu de Prins van Wales.

De voormalige koning was ook peetvader van de dochter van prins en prinses van Michael van Kent, Lady Gabriella Kingston.

Camilla en andere familieleden zullen worden vergezeld door de weduwe van de overleden koning, koningin Anne-Marie, hun oudste zoon, kroonprins Pavlos en andere leden van de Griekse koninklijke familie voor de dienst in het schip van de 15e-eeuwse kapel.

Charles kon vorig jaar de begrafenis van Constantijn in Athene niet bijwonen vanwege verplichtingen, waaronder een ontmoeting met de president van Cyprus. De Princess Royal vertegenwoordigde hem bij de dienst.

Constantijn, die stierf in een ziekenhuis in Athene, besteeg in 1964 op 23-jarige leeftijd de troon.

De jonge koning, die Olympisch goud had gewonnen in de zeilsport, was aanvankelijk enorm populair.

Het jaar daarop had hij een groot deel van die steun verspild door zijn actieve betrokkenheid bij de machinaties die de door het volk gekozen regering van de Centrumunie van premier George Papandreou ten val brachten.

Deze episode, die in Griekenland nog steeds algemeen bekend staat als de ‘afvalligheid’ of het aflopen van de regerende partij van verschillende politici, destabiliseerde de constitutionele orde en leidde tot een militaire staatsgreep in 1967.

Constantijn kwam uiteindelijk in botsing met de militaire heersers en werd gedwongen in ballingschap te gaan.

De dictatuur schafte de monarchie in 1973 af en een referendum nadat de democratie in 1974 was hersteld, deed alle hoop die Constantijn had om opnieuw te regeren de grond in gaan.

Hij leefde vele jaren in ballingschap in Hampstead Garden Suburb in Noord-Londen, voordat hij in 2013 terugkeerde naar zijn thuisland.
