Melina Abdullah, 51, a professor of Pan-African studies at Cal State University in Los Angeles, took to X, formerly Twitter, to express her thoughts on the pop singer and her gym boyfriend over the course of two weeks.

“Why do I feel like it’s a little racist to be a Taylor Swift fan?” Abdullah wrote on February 11, the day of the Super Bowl.

“I said FEEL, not think,” she continued when another user asked her to elaborate. “Kinda that feeling I get when there are too many American flags.”

Hours later, after the Kansas City Chiefs were declared the winners, Abdullah wrote, “Why do I feel like this was a right-wing, white-supremacist conspiracy?!?! Booooo!!!!’

As her posts caught the attention of other users, Abdullah doubled down on her stance. “People think they’re attacking me by asking why I think everything is racist… I’m not offended,” she wrote. “Almost everything is racist.”

In response to a commenter, the lawyer clarified: “And I have also decided to work with all my might and in a community of committed people to fight racism and oppression.”

On February 23, Abdullah returned to social media to post a voice message from a man who labeled her “a joke,” “ignorant” and “what is wrong with this country.”

“How dare you throw away the racist ideas you throw out every day?” shouted the man, who identified himself as Ethan George of Texas, before proclaiming that he wished she would “die.”

“If this is what a tweet about Taylor Swift fans being ‘slightly racist’ brings up, I’ll edit myself…Y’all are full-fledged violent white delusions,” Abdullah wrote.

The 51-year-old is also co-director of BLM advocacy group Black Lives Matter Grassroots.

She sued the Los Angeles Police Department in 2020 after they did so descended on her home during a reported swatting incident.

On August 19, 2020, the LAPD received a 911 call from someone claiming to have been holding people hostage at Abdullah’s home in Crenshaw.

In court documents filed in California Superior Court, the mother of three said she feared LAPD SWAT officers would fire their weapons at her home and hurt her children.

She accused the LAPD of failing to contact her beforehand despite giving her that contact information, and claimed the department organized the incident as ‘retaliation’ for her activism.

She added that police did not really believe the claims of an ongoing hostage situation.

As evidence, Abdullah cited an example where police had their guard, who the officer did not know, go through a perimeter and enter the house as they walked around it.

Two neighbors were also allowed to enter the house to check on her and walk next to her as she walked outside to talk to officers, the lawsuit alleged.

Abdullah viewed the response as “an attempt to quash the protest, to brand me as someone who has been very visible and vocal in protesting the LAPD.”

She was beaten twice more after the trial was announced.

In a separate legal battle, Abdullah and BLM accused Grassroots Black Lives Matters Global Network Foundation Inc. of collecting donations from the work of city chapters and then disregarding activists in decision-making.

BLM Grassroots consists of 20 BLM chapters across the country, which argued they were entitled to tens of millions of dollars from the national foundation.

However, the case was dismissed last year by a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge after the activists were unable to prove that it was entitled to the money, among other unsubstantiated claims.

Abdullah said the group was “stunned and dismayed” by the court’s dismissal order.

“As always, the work of Black Lives Matter will continue regardless of the court’s ruling,” she promised in a statement.

Although Jessica has not recently commented on her apparent falling out with the Duchess of Sussex, she has hinted about their friendship break-up on her Instagram on several occasions. 

In recent months, the stylist has also suggested that she is preparing to return to TV in a bid to ‘uncancel’ herself.

As Jessica tries to rescue her career, here FEMAIL reveals how the stylist – who first met Meghan on the set of Suits – has adapted to life after Meghan Markle.

Denying Friendship Break-Up

At the beginning of 2020, Jessica was vocal in her support of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following Megxit.

The Canadian stylist posted a defiant quote on her Instagram account, saying: ”A strong woman looks a challenge in the eye and gives it a wink.’

Months later, the two women were said to become distant when lifestyle blogger Sasha Exeter called out Jessica Mulroney – who ‘took offence’ to a ‘generic call to action’ post Sasha had shared about the Black Lives Matter movement.

In a follow-up video, Sasha said: ‘What happened next was a series of very problematic behaviour and antics […]

‘I’m by no means calling Jess a racist but what I will say is this: She is very well aware of her wealth, perceived power and privilege because of the colour of her skin and that, my friends, gave her the momentary confidence to come for my livelihood in writing. Textbook white privilege really, in my personal opinion.’

Following the blogger’s claims, Jessica issued three public apologies, however she still faced consequences and was dropped by numerous television networks.

DailyMail.com exclusively revealed that ABC severed ties with her, confirming that Jessica would not be returning to her occasional role as a fashion contributor on Good Morning America.

Canadian TV network CTV also cut off ties with the stylist, revealing that it would be pulling all episodes of her wedding-themed reality TV show I Do Redo from its platform. 

In one instance, commenting on a video clip shared by Sasha, Jessica said she was ‘unequivocally sorry’, writing: ‘As I told you privately, I have lived a very public and personal experience with my closest friend where race was front and centre. It was deeply educational.’

Despite their close relationship, insiders claimed that the Duchess had permanently cut ties with Jessica after she became embroiled in a race row with the influencer.

An insider told Page Six that the duo’s relationship was already on the rocks because Meghan felt that Jessica was trying to ‘make a career out of the friendship.’

‘The white privilege row has really given Meghan the excuse she was waiting for to cut Jess off for good,’ the source said. ‘I don’t know what the tipping point was, but Jess has been on the outs for some time. 

In September 2020, Jessica addressed the rumours of rift between her and the Duchess of Sussex.

She wrote on her Instagram Stories: ‘I’m going to tell this once and for all. Meghan and I are family.

‘She is the kindest friend and has checked up on me everyday.’

Six months later, Jessica shared a pic in an Instagram Story of the flowers she received from Markle on her 41st birthday, on which she wrote: ‘LUCKIEST FRIEND XXXX, THX MM.’ 

Subtle jabs at Meghan

The following year, it became increasingly evident that Meghan and Jessica’s friendship had soured.

In June 2021, the mother-of-three posted a cryptic quote on her Instagram Story, which read: ‘Life changes. You lose love. You lose friends. You lose pieces of yourself that you never imagined would be gone. 

‘And then, without even realizing it, those pieces come back. New love enters. Better friends come along. And a stronger, wiser you, is staring back in the mirror.’

In August 2021, Jessica told her followers: ‘It can be lonely having the world, friends distance from you and not even ask how you are. But, thankfully, you find the things that truly matter….’

The following year, Jessica posted a picture of a sign reading: ‘You are not too sensitive. Your are not overreacting. If it hurts you it hurts you.’

She captioned the post: ‘I wish I had a seen this a long time ago. I hope it makes a difference in your day too.’ 

Last July, Jessica and her family travelled to Italy – where she once visited with Meghan during the Duchess’ ‘single girl summer’ in 2016. 

In a video montage of the trip, Jessica could be seen walking around the Antinori winery – where Meghan’s favourite wine Tignanello is made. 

Meghan launched her blog The Tig in 2014 and named the site after her favourite wine. 

Lost fashion deals  

Before the race row erupted, Jessica Mulroney was a contributor on Good Morning America and Canada’s Cityline – where she worked as a stylist.

She also hosted her own wedding-themed series called I Do, Redo – where couples whose weddings had gone awry were given the chance to have another special day.

However, these regular television presenting jobs were collateral damage following the Sasha Exeter fall-out.

Jessica also also stepped down from the board of directors of The Shoebox Project, the charity she co-founded a decade ago to ‘provide gifts to women living in shelters or accessing community support,’ according to public records.

‘In light of recent events, the charity supports Jessica’s decision to step away from the Board of Directors,’ read a statement from the organization at the time.

After growing distant from Meghan Markle, Jessica’s fashion partnerships also appear to dry up for a time.

After years of working with high-end designers, the mother partnered up with Canadian high street label Aritizia. 

She has also secured deals with the online retailers Revolve and Fwrd. 

‘January was the busiest yet most fulfilling month I’ve had in many years,’ Jessica told her followers earlier this month when she shared video highlights of a trip to Los Angeles where she was ‘working with and styling some of the most wonderful people and events.’ 

Clawing back connections 

After stepping back from The Shoebox Project in 2020, Jessica appears to have worked her way back into the charity’s good books.

In November 2023, she attended the fundraising party with her daughter Ivy.

Posting from the event, she wrote: ‘Every year I am in awe of your generosity and support. What a night raising over 25k for women impacted by homelessness.’

Although she didn’t attend the event, the mother-of-three plugged the 2023 Canadian Arts & Fashion Awards on Instagram.

She wrote: ‘‘There is so much talent in this country and I thank you for always making me feel beautiful in your designs. Good luck tonight. 

‘Despite everything going on in the world, it is still important to celebrate our own.’ 

Public relations expert Vince Ciarlo of Toronto-based Ciarlo Communications says he believes it’s only right that Jessica should be ‘back on the scene.’ 

He told Femail: ‘Enough time has passed, and the world has changed since she was shamed. Like a true professional, she followed the playbook on the “Art of the Apology.”

‘She apologized, kept out of the limelight and rebuilt her brand and reputation and now deserves the respect and attention to share her expertise on creativity.’

Jessica took a two-month break from social media – but six months after the scandal, she shared DMs and text messages between herself and Exeter that the National Post’s columnist Barbara Kay called ‘a complete exoneration of Jessica from all the false allegations of racist bullying.’ 

Kay concluded that Jessica ‘is innocent of the moral crimes she has been so unjustly charged with. 

She added: ‘She did not deserve the reflexive shunning the accusations called forth. But she has no wish for revenge. She wants only to resume the profession she loves with honour and dignity.’

In July, she shared ‘a little a preview’ of a photoshoot she did in Italy with her Instagram followers.

She captioned the post: ‘Makeup and fancy free. Can’t wait to share the entire piece.’ In response to two comments asking if the shoot was for Vogue, Jessica didn’t shut down the suggestion and answered with heart emojis.

Not long after, in a post she later deleted, Jessica captioned a carousel of photos with the hashtags ‘#Vogue #Italy #FashionSpread.’

What’s more, Jessica also teased a potential I Do, Redo comeback last summer.

She wrote on Instagram: ‘If anyone knows me or what I love to do, it involves surprising brides and grooms with the wedding of their dreams. Finally, Im getting back into the game.

‘Coming to a screen near you.’

Gen-Zers are coming forward with stories of dating hardships caused by the intense and growing political divide between men and women in their generation.

In one piece for the Free press, Gen-Z journalist Rikki Schlott shares stories of her colleagues trying to break into the dating pool, which is full of highly politicized and highly online candidates.

Schlott spoke to a 25-year-old college student in Washington, D.C., who told her that he was a traditional conservative completely masks his political identity before and during dates with his contemporaries.

“You just have to assume that most girls are progressive and constantly make sure you don't say the wrong thing,” he said.

“On first dates, I'm usually just trying to gauge where they're coming from while glossing over my views.”

Numerous reports lately illustrate the widening political divide between the genders of Gen-Z.

Young women are liberal and moving further to the left every day. While young men have emerged as sharply conservative over the past five years, a pattern that has been developing for at least a decade.

Data shows that women in particular often refuse to date across party lines, creating a dynamic that could ultimately lead to demographic collapse.

The majority of young American women (about 55 percent) say they wouldn't date a man who listens to Joe Rogan's incredibly popular podcast.

On the other side of the equation, 64 percent of young men think identifying as a communist is a red flag.

Saying 'Black Lives Matter' also proved to be a turn-off for a third of young men, while almost two-thirds of young men say supporting 'Black Lives Matter' is a green flag.

American politics is not the only thing that influences the dating lives of young people.

In England, Germany and especially South Korea, men take a sharp turn to the right, while women stay to the left.

In South Korea, in response to what they see as a sexist society that is not conducive to women's development, women have stopped having children.

In what's been called the “4B movement,” women are refusing to marry, date, have children, and have heterosexual sex. The birth rate has fallen to a dismal 0.78 births per woman.

Schlott writes that modern app dating has anecdotally become a coded exercise for men, and an exhibitionist display of progressivism for women.

Young men, she says, label themselves as “moderate” if they are conservative, and “liberal” if they are moderate.

One such case told her that he pretends 'he's awake' because 'a man' has to have sex.'

The 25-year-old student said, “It's a death wish to say you're a conservative.”

Women, on the other hand, project their politics openly and radically.

“I'm strangely attracted to: comrades,” one woman wrote on a popular dating app.

'My love language is: Marxist political theory.'

'Let's make sure we're on the same page about: Covid is real. Land back. Mask and vax. LGBTQIA2+. Anti-capitalism. BLM. ANTIFA. Universal basic income/health care. Trans rights. Socialism. ACAB. (Palestinian flag emoji),” reads a particularly progressive, but not particularly unique, profile of a young woman in Brooklyn, according to Schlott.

The hope for Gen-Zers would be that as they grow older, they will move toward the political center so that the U.S. birth rate doesn't drop to South Korean levels.

SERIOUS action must be taken against misguided football match spectators who attack players with racist comments.

Supporters? These individuals are not supporting anything.
They are sad, sick people and we must do whatever it takes to keep them out of our stadiums.

I would support almost any sanction to prevent this, but I do have concerns about the method proposed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, which sets the stage for points to be deducted from any club whose fans brandish racist insults.

Maybe not a sledgehammer, but certainly a toxic substance. It is dangerous to play with reduction points.

Nottingham Forest and Everton are facing similar actions (again) and Manchester City could do so too if authorities finally take action to follow up on what are reportedly more than a hundred cases of mysterious something-or-other crimes.

Points deduction affects the structure of our football.
To remove them from the clubs for any reason other than putting the ball in the net is to cut down the goalposts and replace them with administrators.

As a country, Britain has made significant progress towards equality for all races and genders.

But all kinds of despicable racist behavior still exists.

Take the case of one man, who watched three of England's black players miss shootout penalties in the 2021 Euro finals. He then sent them vile racist insults on his Facebook account.

He was given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay £100 compensation – ridiculous considering his crime would have had a huge impact on the trio representing their country to the world and on their mental health.

Also think of Nazi signals from the terraces or the cheering that follows racist taunts. It's a bit surprising that no player has followed Eric Cantona and Eric Dier's 'get in your face between you' examples.

Clubs have worked hard to eliminate criminals and racists from our grounds.

There is no one who disagrees with taking strong action and we are all ready with stewards, standby police, evictions, education programs and bans.

But Infantino would have to shake a white shoe and come to a different conclusion.

Mine would be, with the greatest regret, to order the closure of the stadium in the event of blatant racism.

Udinese in Serie A is an example. They have just banned four fans for life and will have to play a match behind closed doors after racist abuse was aimed at AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan last weekend.

Closed doors are rightly an embarrassment for supporters, and for the club involved it costs millions in gate, hospitality and catering revenues – let alone the millions likely to be lost to sponsors.

A much better way to encourage supporters to check each other and clubs to take more action to eliminate the dirt in the first place.

Football is a huge force in many people's lives, reaching all backgrounds, all ages and all sectors of life.

It's a game supported by billions, played by millions and nationally contributes £7.6 billion to the wider UK economy, creating more than 94,000 jobs.

Supporters can hiss and boo as much as they want. Even swearing is acceptable as long as it is not personalized or nasty.

We love football because it is “the beautiful game”, which may be a cliché, but sums up the fundamental love that has spread from our shores to the rest of the planet.

Just like race, gender and religion, color should not matter and racism has no place in the game. All players are professionals who deserve our respect.

In a resurfaced post from December 2015, the duchess said that “the room stops” when her friend “shows up at an event.”

Referring to the 1980s American sitcom Out of This World, Meghan compared Jessica to the show’s heroine, Evie (played by Maureen Flannigan) – who has the ability to freeze time.

Meghan gushed about the effect Jessica has on people, describing her as “smart and fashionable and very cool, and also va va va voom pritaaaay” – in a post on a fan-run archive website of The Tig.

In the Netflix documentary, Meghan shared footage from the night Prince Harry proposed in 2017 – where she Facetimed her girlfriend ‘Jess’ as she walked the grounds of Kensington Palace.

The following year, Meghan then asked Jessica’s three children John, Brian and Isabel to be in her wedding party – with the stylist taking a starring role as she entered St George’s Chapel with the Princess of Wales.

However, it appears the Duchess of Sussex’s friendship with the Toronto-based stylist has cooled in recent years.

Despite playing a major role on their wedding day and publicly supporting Meghan as she adjusted to life as a Royal, Jessica was noticeably absent from the Duke and Duchess’ six-hour Netflix series, which landed on the streaming platform in December 2022 . .
