FRANKIE Bridge is not only loved for being one-fifth of popular girl band The Saturday’s, but she also has a huge fashion following on Instagram.

The former singer, who is now a panelist on Loose Women, regularly shares her top photos in a weekly section called ‘Frankie’s Faves’ – and fashion fans have been going crazy for a pair of River Island shoes they recently spotted in a photo.

So if you have designer taste but not the bank balance to match, you might just want to listen!

That’s because the River Island ‘Black Studded Mary Jane Ballet Pumps’ look almost identical to a pair of £1,250 Miu Miu ballerinas.

But there is one big difference: the high price tag.

The high-street replica has a similar stud detail, but costs just £35, meaning you can save yourself a whopping £1.2k.

River Island’s bargain shoes also have a flat rubber sole, a PU upper and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, which is useful given the wet weather of recent days.

However, it’s worth pointing out that the main difference between the luxury version and the dupes – apart from the price tag – is that Miu Miu’s ‘ballerinas embellished with logo straps’ have rhinestones instead of studs, and an elastic band instead of a buckle. .

The product description online reads: “Miu Miu puts a sparkling twist on the classic ballet pumps with this crystal-embellished eyelet leather pair.

“The style features a delicate bow detail and an elastic band that runs across the foot.”

In her Instagram post, fashionista Frankie paired the shoes with River Island’s ‘Blue High Waisted Relaxed Straight Crop Jeans’, which retail for £38, a £30 loose gray knitted jumper and a sweet yellow long button-up coat, priced at £75.

She wore a ‘grey melton’ baseball cap from the shop, £15, a black crinkle bumbag, £14.90, and a pair of chunky gold earrings, on sale for £12.

And it’s no surprise that fashion fans couldn’t get enough of her look, especially the shoes.

“I love the shoes!!” praised one.

A second wrote: “Obsessed with everything.”

And a third added: “Wow!!!! I love all this Frankie.

It is Friday. Californians share their favorite bridges. In addition, Southern California's oldest bookstore is looking for a buyer.

I moved to San Francisco from Los Angeles a little over a year ago, and one thing that still marks me as a newcomer is how much fun I have crossing bridges in the Bay Area.

During my first trip across the Carquinez Bridge Recently on Interstate 80, I was struck by the industrial steel span and what it passed through: the vast expanse of water known as the Carquinez Strait, which divides Contra Costa and Solano counties.

The fact that I can leave one county via a bridge and enter another country by air seems truly magical, because anyone who has ridden in a car with me recently has heard me drive around.

Readers send me emails about their favorite bridges in California, including the most iconic ones, like the Bixby Bridge on Highway 1 in Big Sur, the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena and of course the golden gate.

Some have shared their love for lesser-known bridges, such as the Cold Spring Canyon Arch Bridge in the Santa Ynez Mountains, the Rainbow Bridge on Donner Pass Road and Fernbridge over the Eel River in Humboldt County.

All kinds of bridges can fascinate us, and often also personal connections. Here are some, lightly edited:

“My favorite is the western part of the Bay bridge. When I was a kid, my parents drove over the double-decker bridge, and we rode on the lower section and left San Francisco. On the way back, the top part looked like the Golden Gate to me. It took me a while to understand the concept of a double-decker bridge. I don't know why some memories still remain very clear after more than sixty years, but this is one of them.” — Marty McVeigh, Brentwood

“The Tower Bridge here in Sacramento is one of the most beautiful sights in the city, I think. The way the sunset reflects in the gold paint, or how the bridge reflects in the river. Especially the way that when you drive through, you can see right into the heart of Sacramento.” — Sydney Amestoy, Sacramento

“The Sundial Bridge in Redding does much more than connect two banks of the Sacramento River. As one of the few lucky enough to give guided tours of the bridge, I have seen how the bridge has developed into a new city center. Here locals and visitors mingle with their children and dogs to enjoy the ever-changing views of the surrounding mountains and wildlife, from salmon in the river, geese on the river, and ospreys, bald eagles and vultures flying flying over the river. – Kay Johnson, Redding

“I am very fortunate that my commute requires me to cross my favorite bridge: the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. It feels the most picturesque. You can see the city of San Francisco in all its glory or mixed in with the fog. The bridge runs right along Red Rock Island, which at the same time gives it a wild, nature feeling. Crossing in either direction, you'll see looming Mount Tamalpais or the vast, illuminated hills of the East Bay with Oakland to the south. There are a lot fewer people on the bridge than on the Golden Gate Bridge, so it feels more personal.” — Helen Couture Rodriguez, El Cerrito

“I live in San Diego and regularly cross the Coronado Bridge to go to swim practice. The bridge itself, although an engineering marvel, is not a thing of beauty. But the view of Coronado Island always reminds me what a beautiful place I live!” — Barton Lynch, San Diego

“My young nephew was going through a bridge-obsessed phase a few years ago, so for his birthday we spent a very long but memorable day driving over every Bay Area bridge. As I logged all those miles with a wide-eyed 9-year-old, I gained a new appreciation for all the spans that grace our waterways. I will never have a favorite again!” — Brandi Katz, Aromas

“I lived in the Bay Area for almost ten years, and the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge is the best. It lasts so long that it feels like you are alone on a large surface of water. And at certain times of the year the commute often had beautiful sunsets.” — Jay Torres, Laguna Beach

“I am lucky that I can commute across the border by bicycle Golden Gate Bridge to work most days. About ten years ago, I was recruited for a job in New York City and discussed the pros and cons with my friend Tucker on the way home. Tucker saw something in the water and stopped us in the middle of the west deck. To our delight, two whales began breaching just west of the bridge, something I have not seen before or since. Tucker said to me, 'Philip, if you're looking for a sign…' I still enjoy commuting across my favorite bridge.” — Philip Norris, Mill Valley

Robert Ashton Conner didn't know much about water polo until he fell in love with Margaret Ann Steffens.

Steffens, who grew up in Danville in a family of notable water polo players, joined the U.S. Women's Water Polo National Team at age 15 and went on to win Olympic team gold medals in 2012 and 2016. Conner, who is from Marin County, was immediately recognized attracted to her.

The two met at a birthday party in Palo Alto in 2016, while Steffens was completing her undergraduate degree at Stanford. The connection was instant, they said. Two weeks later, the couple shared their first date — and first kiss — and soon after, Conner regularly commuted to Palo Alto to see Steffens on her days off from training.

The rest of their story is told in water polo matches (first in Hungary and then in Spain, where Steffens played professionally) and in Olympic medals (Steffens won her third gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics). In 2022, Conner proposed, and the couple married last November in San Juan, PR

An Indiana border town is undergoing a makeover after six decades of decline, earning it the nickname “Scary Gary.”

The now crime-ridden metropolis is named after attorney Elbert Henry Gary, who founded US Steel and built what remains the conglomerate's largest factory there in the summer of 1908.

Gary grew into a prosperous industrial powerhouse that provided the raw materials for many of America's bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers in the first half of the 20th century.

It is also known as the birthplace of Michael Jackson in 1958, and where he grew up with his brothers before they became the Jackson Five.

But the once booming city collapsed into chaos following the decline of the US steel industry in the 1970s, when foreign steel imports exceeded domestic production.

Despite decades of decline, the Rust Belt city of Gary has “the recipe for success” thanks to its strong infrastructure, according to new Democratic Mayor Eddie Melton. (Image: Michael Jackson's childhood home in Gary)

The total population fell from 180,000 people in 1960 to less than half that number today – and around 10,000 buildings now lie abandoned.

although Gary has long been a diverse city; the exodus also dramatically changed racial dynamics.

Much of the steelworkers who left were white, meaning the black and Hispanic share of the population rose from 21 percent in 1930 to about 87 percent in 2020.

The lack of local industry also led to rising poverty rates and violent crime, as recently chronicled by YouTube blogger Peter Santanello.

According to Neighborhood Scout, an average of 49 crimes per square kilometer are recorded there every year.

This dwarfs the national average of 27 crimes per square mile – and it is also a whopping 149 percent higher than the Indiana average of 20 crimes per square mile.

Residents told Santanello they are terrified to walk the streets at night for fear of being robbed – or even shot – amid a proliferation of dilapidated buildings and abandoned homes.

But the Rust Belt city has “the recipe for success” thanks to its strong infrastructure, according to new Democratic Mayor Eddie Melton.

“We need to change the narrative and make it clear to the world that Gary is open for business,” Melton told the newspaper New York Times.

Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, just across the Illinois border from Chicago, Gary has easy access to the arterial roads it once helped build.

It also borders a shipping port to the north and the Indiana Dunes National Park to the east, which attracts nearly three million tourists annually.

Melton's government has begun demolishing old buildings to make way for new developments, with plans to build a casino and a minor league baseball field.

Officials hope Gary will grow into an urban hub that will provide a cheaper alternative to neighboring Chicago, where rents have skyrocketed in recent years.

According to Zillow, the average home in the city currently costs just $69,725, a price that pales in comparison to the Chicago average of $279,118.

It's also much lower than the cost of buying a home in the nearby city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, which averages $215,237 per Zillow.

Nearby transportation systems are also getting a boost, including a $127 million grant for Interstates 80 and 94, which cross Gary.

Meanwhile, the South Shore Line, a commuter rail link that connects Chicago to cities in northwestern Indiana, will open a second set of tracks between Gary and Michigan City.

The Gary/Chicago International Airport also received a $6 million grant from the federal government, allowing it to add more cargo capacity, with the goal of becoming a logistics hub for the United Parcel Service.

However, officials who want to see improvements from within the city itself will also have to deal with Gary's status as a political outlier and border town, which has also historically held the city back.

As a smaller, predominantly Democratic city within a large conservative county within a Republican stronghold state, Gary officials were often stymied by more powerful lawmakers.

Gary has elected a string of Democratic mayors since 1943, while the Indiana Senate currently has 39 Republican members and 10 Democrats.

The Assembly has blocked several initiatives that would have allowed the city to expand its tax base — while also providing scarce funding due to corruption concerns, according to the NYT.

“Gary was held captive by what the other cities in his county wanted to do,” Paul Helmke, the former Republican mayor of Fort Wayne, told the newspaper.

The much-contested takeover of US Steel by Japan's Nippon Steel could also impact even more American jobs.

US Steel's largest plant, Gary Works, employs about 3,700 people – down from more than 30,000 at its peak.

Previous plans to transform Gary have also been shelved, including a multibillion-dollar plan to build a theme park based on the city's reputation as the birthplace of the Jackson Five.

“We certainly missed an opportunity to make it a Dollywood, a Graceland,” Chuck Hughes, president of the Gary Chamber of Commerce, told the NYT.

She rose to fame as the tough personal trainer on The Biggest Loser.

And now Michelle Bridges has been accused of promoting an ‘unrealistic’ body image on her social media.

The 53-year-old raised eyebrows on Friday when she posted a selfie to Instagram that showed off her tiny waist.

Despite showing off her enviable figure, some of Michelle’s followers were furious that she didn’t show off a more recognizable image.

The photo shows the famed fitness guru flaunting her toned figure in a figure-hugging black leather skirt with a thigh-high slit.

Michelle turned her body to the side in the photo, which made her waist look impossibly small.

One fan suggested Michelle ‘sucked in’ her waist to make it look smaller, while another said the photo was ‘unrealistic’.

“You look great, but I can’t help but think you’re making your waist look smaller by sucking it in?” wrote one concerned fan.

“Maybe I’m wrong, but photos like this make me angry because people look at them and think that’s how they would like to be, even though it’s not technically real,” they continued.

‘I believe that all influences should show their ‘natural’ selves, especially as they can play a huge role in women’s and body image.’

Another added: ‘A totally unrealistic photo, which sends the wrong message. Please keep it real.’

‘Where has the natural gone?’ another follower complained.

Despite the backlash, many others came to Michelle’s defense and praised the star for staying in shape.

“You are a beautiful, beautiful lady,” one gushed, while another exclaimed: “Gorgeous!”

“Always stunning and beautiful to me, I love your dress and your mirror selfie,” another added.

The photos on Michelle’s Instagram page do not appear to have been edited and her waist looks small in several images.

Michelle rose to fame on The Biggest Loser in 2007 and has also appeared on Celebrity MasterChef Australia in 2009, Dancing with the Stars in 2019 and Celebrity Apprentice Australia in 2021.

In Pennsylvania, true 13 percent of bridges are classified as structurally deficient, engineers use artificial intelligence to create lighter concrete blocks for new construction. Another project uses AI to develop a highway wall that can absorb the noise of cars – and also some of the greenhouse gas emissions released by traffic.

At a time when federal allocation of billions of dollars to infrastructure projects would help with just a fraction of the cost needed to repair or replace the nation’s aging bridges, tunnels, buildings and roads, some engineers are looking to AI to become more resilient to help build projects for less money.

“These are structures, with the tools we have, that save materials, save costs, save everything,” said Amir Alavi, professor of engineering at the University of Pittsburgh and member of the consortium developing the two AI projects in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission.

The potential is enormous. At least the production of cement alone makes up for that 8 percent of the world’s CO2 emissions, and 30 billion tons of concrete are used worldwide every year, so more efficient concrete production would have huge environmental consequences.

And AI – essentially machines that can synthesize information and find patterns and conclusions just as the human mind can – could have the ability to speed up and improve tasks like engineering challenges to an incalculable degree. It works by analyzing massive amounts of data and providing options that give people better information, models and alternatives for making decisions.

It has the potential to be both more cost-effective (one machine does the work of dozens of engineers) and more creative in coming up with new approaches to familiar tasks.

But experts warn against embracing the technology too quickly because it is largely unregulated and its results remain largely unproven. In particular, some are concerned about AI’s ability to design infrastructure in a process that involves multiple regulators and participants over a long period of time. Others worry that AI’s ability to instantly draw from the entire internet could lead to flawed data that produces unreliable results.

The challenges facing America’s infrastructure have become all the more apparent in recent years: Texas’ power grid failed during devastating ice storms in 2021 and continues to struggle with the state’s needs; communities across the country, from Flint, Mich., to Jackson, Miss., have struggled with failing water supplies; and more than 42,000 bridges are in poor condition nationwide.

A vast majority of the country’s roads and bridges were built decades ago, and as a result, “infrastructure problems are significant in many dimensions,” said Abdollah Shafieezadeh, a professor of civil, environmental and geodetic engineering at Ohio State University.

The collaborations in Pennsylvania reflect AI’s potential to address some of these problems.

In the bridge project, engineers use AI technology to develop new shapes for concrete blocks that use 20 percent less material while maintaining durability. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will use the blocks to build a bridge; there are more than 12,000 in the state that need repairs, This was reported by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association.

Engineers in Pittsburgh are also working with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission to design a more efficient sound-absorbing wall that will also capture some of the nitrous oxide emitted by vehicles. They plan to build it in an area disproportionately affected by highway noise. The designs save approximately 30 percent on material costs.

These new projects have not been field tested, but they have been successful in the laboratory setting, said Dr. Alavi.

In addition to AI’s speed in developing new designs, one of the greatest assets in civil engineering is its potential to prevent and detect damage.

Rather than investing large sums of money in repair projects, engineers and transportation agencies could identify problems early, experts say, such as a crack developing in a bridge before the structure itself collapsed.

This technology is capable of providing an analysis of what is happening in real time during incidents such as the bridge collapse on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia this summer or the fire that closed part of Interstate 10 in Los Angeles this month, and could be developed to implement automated emergency response measures, says Seyede Fatemeh Ghoreishi, professor of engineering and computer science at Northeastern University.

But as in many areas, there are increasing conversations – and concerns – about the relationship between AI, human work and physical safety.

While AI has proven useful in many applications, technology leaders have testified before Congress and pushed for regulations. And last month, President Biden issued a statement executive order for a range of AI standards, including security, privacy and employee support.

Experts are also concerned about the spread of disinformation from AI systems. AI works by integrating already available data, so if that data is incorrect or biased, the AI will draw incorrect conclusions.

“It’s a really great tool, but it’s really a tool that you should only use for an initial version at this point,” says Norma Jean Mattei, past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Dr. Mattei, who has worked in engineering education and ethics throughout her career, added: “Once this develops, I’m confident we’ll get to a point where you’re less likely to encounter problems gets. We’re not there yet.”

Also worrying is the lack of standards for AI. For example, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has no standards for the robotics industry. There is growing concern about car accidents involving autonomous vehicles, but for now automakers are not required to adhere to federal regulations for software safety testing.

Lola Ben-Alon, assistant professor of architectural technology at Columbia University, is also cautious about using AI. She emphasized the need to take the time to understand how to use it, but she said she “wasn’t condemning” it and that it had many great possibilities.

Few doubt that AI exists in infrastructure projects and elsewhere as a tool for people to use, not as a replacement.

“There is still a strong and important place for human existence and experience” in the field of engineering, said Dr. Ben-Alon.

The uncertainty surrounding AI could create more problems in financing projects like the one in Pittsburgh. But a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said the agency was excited to see how the concrete Dr. Alavi and his team design the field of bridge construction could expand.

Dr. Alavi said his work throughout his career had shown him how serious the potential risks of AI are.

But he is confident in the safety of the designs he and his team create, and he is excited about the future of the technology.

“After 10, 12 years, this is going to change our lives,” said Dr. Alavi.

Omid Scobie has denied his new book Endgame is ‘Harry and Meghan’s’ and instead claimed it will tell the ‘current state of the British Royal Family’.

It comes hours after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex distanced themselves from the book, with insiders indicating to MailOnline they had nothing to do with it.

Posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mr Scobie wrote: ‘And let’s get this nonsense out the way – #ENDGAME is about the current state of the British Royal Family.

‘It’s not ”Harry and Meghan’s book”, I’m not ”Meg’s pal”, the Sussexes have nothing to do with it, their story is a small part of a much bigger one you can read in 12 days.’

Experts said that the Sussexes’ favoured royal reporter’s new biography is threatening a potential thawing in relations between the King and his youngest son.

Reactions to the post from social media users varied, with one person writing: ‘Oh, so not like the last book then.’ Another person wrote: ‘Preach! Set them straight.’

MailOnline understands that Meghan and Harry categorically deny any suggestion they are ‘affiliated’ with the book or that Mr Scobie, who has been friendly with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and co-wrote their biography Finding Freedom, is part of the ‘Sussex Camp’.

The denial came after Harry and Meghan’s olive branch to the King on his 75th birthday.

Harry is believed to have telephoned his father on Tuesday – and they have reportedly agreed to chat again next week. The Duchess of Sussex is also said to have spoken to her father-in-law from their home in California while the couple’s children Archie, four, and Lilibet, two, recorded a video of themselves singing happy birthday to their grandfather.

24 hours later excerpts of Mr Scobie’s book were shared with People in the US, including claims that Harry ‘remained in the dark’ about the Queen’s health in her final moments.

It also alleges that it was Meghan who urged Harry to answer his phone when Charles called him on an ‘unknown number’ to reveal that the Queen was close to death, before also asking that Meghan should stay away from Balmoral.

The book is released on November 28 – but excerpts have been released this week

Omid Scobie’s claims from his new book, Endgame

  • William ignored Harry when he asked how he was planning to get to Scotland;
  • Eventually, he booked a £30,000 charter flight to Aberdeenshire from Luton;
  • Charles told him to come without Meghan. Source claims she ‘wasn’t wanted’;
  • Harry had ‘no idea’ about what was going on in Balmoral when his plane took off;
  • But ‘sources’ briefed newspapers that Charles had personally informed son;
  • William believes Harry has been ‘brainwashed by an army of therapists’.

Mr Scobie writes: ‘Charles had cited ‘protocol,’ but the reality was that Kate chose to stay back to pick up the children from their first day at a new school. ‘They just didn’t want Meghan there,’ said a former Palace aide. Meghan, a friend added, ‘could sense she wasn’t wanted’.’

The book also claims Prince William ignored Harry’s texts, forcing him to charter his own plane. ‘William clearly didn’t want to see his brother’, Endgame says.

Mr Scobie’s decision to piggyback the release of his new book on the King’s 75th birthday and the sixth and final series of The Crown was branded ‘deplorable’ today.

Royal journalist and author Phil Dampier told MailOnline: ‘We all know that Scobie is their mouthpiece and he gets his information directly or indirectly from the Sussexes, so anything which is hurtful to Charles, Camilla or William and Kate, will just make things much worse. Let’s put it this way – I can’t see Harry and Meghan coming over for a family Christmas’.

He added: ‘The King has always left the door open for his son and will continue to do so. But in reality if there are more serious allegations in Scobie’s book it will set back any chance of a reconciliation’.

Royal courtiers are said to be furious over the claims made by Harry and Meghan’s biographer Omid Scobie, who alleges that the Prince William ignored the Duke of Sussex’s calls as he raced to be at the Queen’s bedside in Scotland in September last year. Mr Scobie , who has been friendly with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and co-wrote their biography Finding Freedom, could be cut loose by the Sussexes and their circle, it has been claimed.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said: ‘The timing of this is utterly deplorable. I think the Sussexes will have to think hard about whether or not Scobie is their spokesman or their friend. It will be interesting to see if Harry and Meghan will still want to be associated with Scobie after this’.

He added: ‘Of course, the fact that it’s been leaked to People magazine makes one wonder what’s been going on behind the scenes’.

Royal insiders have torn into Mr Scobie’s claims that Prince William ignored his brother’s calls as the late Queen lay dying in Balmoral last year.

Royal courtiers are said to be furious over the claims made by Harry and Meghan’s biographer Omid Scobie, who alleges that the Prince of Wales ignored the Duke of Sussex’s calls as he raced to be at the Queen’s bedside in Scotland in September last year.

A Royal insider told the Mirror: ‘It appears no matter what happens behind closed doors, even in a time of such pain and grief, that where the Royal Family are concerned it will one day emerge.

‘Nothing is off limits with William and Kate appearing to be this author’s number one target. It only takes a few months for the knives to come out again and the wounds to be opened up’.

In an excerpt of his latest book, Endgame, Mr Scobie alleges that Prince Harry was ‘kept in the dark’ about the Queen’s health in the hours before she died, and that Prince William feels that he has ‘lost Harry and doesn’t want to know this version of him’.

Mr Scobie, who previously released a biography on the Sussexes titled ‘Finding Freedom,’ said Harry, 39, and his 42-year-old wife Meghan had ‘no idea’ the Royal Family were preparing for the Queen’s death last year.

In Endgame, Mr Scobie recounts how the Sussexes had visited the UK for a series of engagements in September 2022 when the palace announced that Queen Elizabeth had been advised by her doctors to rest.

He writes: ‘By the next morning, the Sussexes had no idea that Buckingham Palace was already planning for the Queen’s final hours and the first days of the monarchy’s new era — until the duke’s phone started ringing. An unknown number. He usually ignored those.’

Meghan told her husband to pick up the phone and he accepted the call ‘just before it stopped’, the author wrote.

He continues: ‘Harry hadn’t spoken to his father much that year, but this was not the time for any father-and-son tension. Charles told him he and Camilla were about to leave Dumfries House for Balmoral, where Princess Anne was already by the Queen’s side. He told Harry to make his way to Scotland immediately.’

Harry sent a text message to his brother William asking how he and Kate planned to Scotland and whether they could travel together but got no response, Mr Scobie claims.

He was later told Harry had managed to secure a flight with his uncles Prince Andrew and Prince Edward.

‘It was upsetting to witness,’ Mr Scobie claims he was told by a source close to the Sussexes. ‘[Harry] was completely by himself on this.’

Mr Scobie alleges that Palace ‘sources’ briefed certain newspapers that Charles had personally shared the news of the Queen’s illness with his son. He quoted a friend of the duke who said this left Harry ‘crushed’.

The journalists makes fresh claims about the damaged relationship between William and Harry.

The author also suggests William and Harry’s relationship is beyond repair because the Prince of Wales sees his brother as a ‘defector’

And in the extract shared with People, he claims ‘there is no going back’ for the brothers and ‘absolutely nothing has changed’ since the Duke of Sussex released Spare earlier this year.

A spokesperson for Buckingham Palace refused to comment on Endgame, due to be released on November 28, when approached by MailOnline.

The latest bombshell accusations come just hours after Harry ad his father shared ‘cordial’ 75th birthday call.

Harry is believed to have phoned his father on his special day yesterday to wish him Happy Birthday – in a call thought to be the estranged royals’ first phone chat in six months.

King Charles and Harry are understood to have had minimal contact for months, particularly since the release of Harry’s tell-all memoir Spare, published in January, and a Netflix series, which was released the month prior to that.

Meghan Markle is also said to have spoken to her father-in-law to pass on her wishes from California. And the couple’s children Archie and Lilibet recorded a video of themselves singing happy birthday to their grandfather, the Telegraph newspaper reported.

The report claimed Charles and Harry will speak again next week after their call marked a ‘shift’ in tone and a ‘turning point’ between the pair.

Miles Bridges will return to the Charlotte Hornets next season on a one-year contract after ending a suspension for pleading not to contest domestic violence charges.

The 25-year-old Bridges had been a restricted free agent for the Hornets since June 2022, when he was expected to negotiate a maximum deal of $173 million over five years. But on June 29, 2022, he was arrested in Los Angeles, accused of beating the mother of his two children in front of the children. In November, he pleaded no contest to one domestic violence charge as part of a plea deal that included three years of probation but no jail time.

“I sincerely apologize for the pain, embarrassment and disappointment last year’s incident caused so many people,” Bridges said in a statement via the team on Friday, adding he was “grateful” to be given a second chance to play. He had been with the Hornets since they acquired him on a draft deal in 2018. His new one-year contract is worth $7.9 million, according to ESPN.

Bridges will have to sit out the first 10 games next season. The NBA suspended him for 30 games in April, but credited him for 20 for not playing last season. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver later told a group of sports editors that Bridges and the league had a “mutual understanding” that he would not play during the 2022-23 season, though he said the agreement did not include a suspension. However in February Bridges had told The Associated Press that he would return in March.

As part of his plea deal, Bridges was required to undergo a year of domestic violence counseling, complete 100 hours of community service and take parenting classes. The victim was also given a 10-year restraining order. Bridges initially faced several domestic violence and child abuse charges.

In the team’s statement Friday, Hornets general manager Mitch Kupchak said Bridges’ “dedication to counseling and community service” had played a role in Charlotte’s decision to bring him back.

“During this process, we took a measured and serious approach,” Kupchak said. He added of Bridges: “He has expressed remorse, indicated that he has learned from this situation and indicated that it will not happen again.”

Bridges said he had been in therapy and understood why people wondered if he deserved a second chance. He promised to regain everyone’s trust.

Without Bridges last season, the Hornets were the second worst team in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte’s best player, guard LaMelo Ball, also missed most of the season with injuries. The poor showing positioned the Hornets for a high draft pick, which they used on Alabama’s Brandon Miller at No. 2 overall.

Michael Jordan, the former Chicago Bulls great who has owned the Hornets since 2010, announced last month that he would sell his majority stake in the team but stay on as a minority investor.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Tuesday defended the unusual disciplinary approach of forward Miles Bridges, who has been suspended for 30 games for domestic violence but will miss only 10 games in which he is eligible to play.

Bridges, 25, was a restricted free agent but did not sign with a team or play during the 2022-23 season following his California arrest in June when he was accused of punching his girlfriend in front of their children. He pleaded no contest to a domestic violence charge in November, but it wasn’t until April 14, after a league investigation, that the NBA announced his sentence: a 30-game suspension, with 20-game credit for not playing. this season. Typically, players are only credited for games if they are eligible and available to play.

On Tuesday, Silver said the league and Bridges had a “mutual understanding” that he would not play during the 2022/23 season – although Silver was careful to say Bridges was not suspended. Silver said crediting Bridges for the penalty for 20 games seemed the right thing to do, as he missed a year of income and NBA play. The league also confirmed that Bridges would lose 30 games, even though his suspension would keep him from just 10 if he signed a new contract.

But if Bridges’ absence this season was to be some form of punishment, it didn’t seem to be: in December, he joked with players in Los Angeles at a game between the Lakers and Charlotte Hornets, for whom he played last season. And in February he told The associated press that he would return to play in March. He was sentenced to one year of counseling and community service. Bridges representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bridges’ sentence has been criticized by some reporters and by fans on social media.

The fairness and accountability of the NBA’s disciplinary process has been called into question this season after a series of incidents in which players received different penalties for similar infractions, or were punished more severely than they or their peers felt was fair. League officials said they consider several factors when imposing sentences, including a person’s past behavior, which could lead to different outcomes.
