Britain’s smallest bungalow, the size of a box of Jaffa Cakes, has gone on the market for more than £100,000.

But house hunters were left in disbelief at the mini-mansion described as the ‘size and shape of a Jaffa cake box’.

The Prestatyn house appears to have been built into where a driveway or garage once existed – like a traditional lean-to.

The front is no more than 2.5 meters wide, which makes it super narrow and makes it look like the house is wedged between the neighbors.

Photos of the inside show a long, narrow galley kitchen next to a veranda.

There is a living room with one narrow window, followed by a bathroom and a rear bedroom that opens onto a rear porch and patio.

The house is located in an attractive part of the seaside town of Prestatyn in Denbighshire, Wales.

Agents Bettermove say about Rightmove: “Bettermove is proud to present this one bedroom bungalow in the sought after area of Prestatyn, available without a forward chain.

“The property has double glazing, gas central heating and there is on-street parking via the driveway. The municipal tax bracket is B.

“The interior of this well-maintained property consists of a spacious living room, the fitted kitchen, a double bedroom and the bathroom.

“The exterior features a private backyard, perfect for enjoying the summer months.

A couple put their house up for grabs in a lottery in Battle, East Sussex

“The property is located in the popular town of Prestatyn, close to a range of amenities including shops, supermarkets, restaurants and pubs.

“There are excellent transport links from the A55 and many local bus routes.

“This exciting opportunity is not to be missed!”

Amazingly, the agent then adds: “You can secure the purchase today by paying an exclusivity fee of £1,000, which entitles you to purchase within a certain timeframe.

“Paying this fee ensures that the seller takes their property off the market and reserves it exclusively for you, eliminating the risk of gazumping and demolition fees.

“The exclusivity fee will be refunded to you once the property has been successfully completed.”

House hunters were shocked by the sale.

“I’m going to sell my extension,” the original poster joked.

Well, put it this way. I am a planning officer and would absolutely refuse to grant planning permission

Writer’s comment

Another replied: “This is simultaneously one of the funniest, saddest and most annoying things I have ever seen.”

One added: “I had to watch this at least three times to understand that this is in fact what it appears to be.

“They have somehow crammed a second ‘bungalow’ into the space between two houses, with an entrance porch that must make up over 20% of the ‘bungalow’ area and a ‘kitchen’ the size and shape of a Jaffa Cake box.

‘I refuse to believe that planning permission has been obtained for this.’

Another fumed: ‘The amazing thing is that they’ve managed to set it up so that this little box is its own property. Imagine the application to split it from the house.”

One planning officer said even they were surprised, adding: “Let’s put it this way. I am a planning officer and would absolutely refuse to grant planning permission.”

“I don’t think I’d have the guts to try to sell it!” one squeaked.

Another said: “In Prestatyn?! I wouldn’t give you £110,000 for all of Prestatyn, let alone that.”

And another said: “I thought it had to be London, where else would anyone have the nerve… wow.”

And another said: “This is a mockery. What makes it worse is that it’s just a terrible use of the already small space.

“I’ve seen enough small/micro homes to know this isn’t the way to go. Separating ‘zones’ is important, but not by creating a rabbit hole of depression.”

Thank goodness for a -5 degree Celsius winter day. The frost and snow not only highlight the ethereal beauty of Vilnius' winding streets, its pale, painted 18th and 19th century buildings and skyline of beautiful domes and spires, but also give a hint of its dark history.

Just a few decades ago, someone living here, who might have done nothing more than mumble a complaint about the authorities, would be woken at three in the morning by a sinister knock on the door.

Pushed into a car with blacked-out windows, they were taken out and locked in one of the small, icy cells that visitors can now see into at the Occupation Museum, the former headquarters of the Soviet Union's KGB.

Then they might have been tortured, sent to a Siberian labor camp, or simply disappeared forever.

Like the other two Baltic states, Latvia and Estonia, Lithuania spent almost 45 years, from the end of World War II until the collapse of communism in 1990, in the brutal grip of the Soviet Union.

The frost and snow emphasize the ethereal beauty of Vilnius' winding streets, says Adriaane Pielou

It's a grim recent history that helps explain the unapologetic patriotism and embrace of war heroes you continually encounter.

As I shake the snow off my boots and carefully walk down the stairs to Dom Bow Ties, a small shop under one of the streets in the old town, I find myself in a fairytale world that is unexpectedly dominated by a photo of Winston Churchill.

Old wooden planks decorate the bare brick walls of the former cellar.

There are hundreds of different bow ties, priced from €18: plain, patterned, linen, silk, brocade. Churchill looks down from an angle.

“My grandfather lived through the Second World War and he loved Churchill,” says the owner, Paulius.

In the beautiful National Opera and Ballet Theater, where a last-minute stall costs just €25, I talk to a young music student.

Adriaane shakes the snow off her boots and navigates the streets of the old town, pictured

Adriaane shakes the snow off her boots and navigates the streets of the old town, pictured

“Russia is a neighboring country, and we know what that neighboring country is capable of,” says. 'My father was one of the defenders who stood outside our parliament in 1991 when the Russian tanks came out.

My father says that if they come again, everyone in Vilnius will do what we have to do. Go to our Occupation Museum and you will understand.'

Pushing open the heavy front door (which now emphatically bears a Ukrainian flag) using the brass handle that so many must have touched, I pay my entrance fee (about £5) and step into a meticulously documented world of horror.

The Jewish population of Vilnius suffered the most. By the end of World War II, more than 95 percent had been murdered.

At night, gripping €20 prison tours, led by torch, take place in the old Lukiskes prison, built in 1904 and now part art center with an outdoor igloo sauna.

Harrowing €20 prison tours take place at the old Lukiskes prison (pictured), built in 1904, and now part arts center with an outdoor igloo sauna, says Adriaane

It's a relief to then take a dip in one of Vilnius's countless warm, cheerful cafes.

On the corner of Stikliai Street, in the old town, a restaurant whose exterior is decorated with giant candy canes prompting every other passerby to stop and take a photo, has the best cakes.

The cheapest is Suliniai, the only remaining café from the Soviet era, with Formica tables and a cabbage and pork smell.

'English!' says the unsmiling woman in the blue overalls behind the counter, as she finally delivers my 50p cup of tea, after initially denying that she had any tea in stock at all.

Her tea is almost as cheap as the 80 cent bus ticket from Vilnius airport to the city center.

From spring 2024 – when Lithuania celebrates its 20th anniversary as a member of the EU and NATO – Ryanair will operate flights to Lithuania from a further 15 cities across Europe.

That almost guarantees that tourists will flow in, that prices will rise and that hotels will be such nice ones Relais & Chateaux Stikliai may not remain the great bargain they are today.

He famously said he had nothing to offer but “blood, toil, tears and sweat.”

As Prime Minister during World War II, Sir Winston Churchill kept the country’s hopes alive amid the threat of Nazi tyranny.

And as a new demonstration at the leader’s former home shows, Sir Winston was rewarded with spectacular levels of his own in the years after victory was achieved.

Colored photographs of the enormous birthday cakes that baker Maria Floris made for Churchill are on display in Chartwell in Kent.

The Hungarian pastry chef, who worked from her shop in London’s Soho, was also the royal family’s favorite baker.

The cake she made for Churchill on his 80th birthday, as he neared the end of his second spell as prime minister, was 120 centimeters high.

He weighed more than 45kg and the door of Number 10 Downing Street had to be measured to ensure he would fit through.

On the same day, November 30, a huge model cake was paraded on the roof of a car before the crowds who had gathered to welcome Churchill on his return from the State Opening of Parliament.

The cake made for his 77th birthday was in the shape of a hat with feathers around the edges. It is seen being carried to number 10 in 1951.

However, in 1963 the Daily Mail reported how the cake Mrs Floris made for Sir Winston’s 89th birthday had to be changed at the last minute after an error was spotted on a plaque that featured it.

It featured a retelling of a sentence from one of Sir Winston’s most famous speeches, in which he paid tribute to the fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force.

It should have read: ‘Never has all humanity owed so much in effort to one man.’

But effort was spelled ‘endeaver’.

The light fruitcake had an Anglo-American theme, with maps of Britain and the US linked by a bridge on top.

The new exhibition at Chartwell, titled Winston’s Spectacular Cakes, kicks off events to mark the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston’s birth.

The photos, taken from the TopFoto archive, were colored by expert Tom Marshall in collaboration with the National Trust, which looks after Chartwell.

He said: ‘The process is carried out digitally, using Adobe Photoshop, and each photo took between two and four hours to complete, with layers of digital color painted over the monochrome photos.

‘The shades of gray in the original photo determine how dark each color should be, but not the color itself, so the process is a combination of research and artistic freedom.

‘When researching this project I looked at a lot of archive news footage, as most of Sir Winston Churchill’s birthdays were well documented in the newsreels of the time.

“Although these journals were in black and white, they did give me more angles of the cake decorations to work with and showed some details and context that weren’t initially apparent when looking at the black and white photos.”

After the Second World War, Sir Winston’s birthday became a moment of great interest for both the press and the public.

Photographers came to his home to see the cakes, all of which were designed to showcase his career, achievements and interests in sponge and icing.

From the late 1950s onwards, interest had grown so great that there was a special photo opportunity for the press to take pictures of the cakes in the bakery before they were prepared to take center stage on the big day.

Katherine Carter, curator at Chartwell, said: ‘Our new exhibition showcases the beautiful range of cakes inspired by Churchill’s interests and achievements.

“They were a precursor to our love for extravagant and themed baking today.”

She added: ‘It has been a wonderful treat to research and curate this exhibition, and we look forward to our visitors joining in the celebrations at the start of this special anniversary year, here at Churchill’s home.’

‘Winston’s Spectacular Cakes’ runs from January 13 to February 25, 2024, from 10am to 4pm, at Chartwell and is included in general admission.

Her tasty royals went viral after appearing in the Daily Mail earlier this year – and even earned her a royal seal of approval.

But for a Christmas treat, Jackie Marshall has gone one step further and transformed the extended royal family into a range of very special mince pies.

King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and even the estranged Duke and Duchess of Sussex have all been reunited – finally – at Mrs Marshall’s kitchen table in Swaffham, Norfolk.

Last week she spent three days baking and decorating the striking shortcrust pastry creations.

Mrs Marshall admitted: ‘I really wanted to make them proud. But I’m not quite sure!’

For Harry’s look-alike cake, she created his red hair and beard using strands of ‘sour’ strawberry candies.

While Meghan’s has hair made from an unraveled licorice Catherine wheel and earrings made from Smarties.

“I had high hopes for Queen Camilla and really hoped she would turn out nice,” Ms Marshall, 65, added. “So I decorated her with crushed meringues.”

Meanwhile, the king had his hair made from rice flakes.

“Out of all of them, I think he turned out the best,” she added. “It was actually the easiest to do.”

Catherine was considered particularly provocative because of her beauty, while Prince William’s pastry recreation may be more similar to that of his uncle, Prince Edward.

Shortly after the Mail’s photographer wrapped up his photo shoot, he and Mrs Marshall enjoyed the Princess of Wales – with a generous helping of clotted cream.

The rest of the royals will go into the freezer and be brought out at Christmas for her family to enjoy.

Mrs Marshall’s pastries became famous in the summer after she competed in a King Charles cake at the Sandringham Flower Show.

The regal bake was noticed by Queen Camilla, who was particularly impressed by the cake’s resemblance to her husband.

Fortunately, Charles did indeed see the funny side, chuckling and joking, “It looks like something out of Wallace and Gromit!”

The Mail captured the moment on video and the clip went viral, with the story landing in publications as far away as Adelaide, Australia and Germany.

Ms Marshall – a lifelong Daily Mail and now Mail+ Editions reader – has been inundated with requests for interviews and has even won an award for putting Norfolk on the map.

She said: ‘I just couldn’t believe how it took off after the Mail published it. My 16-year-old granddaughter even called me excitedly to say I was now ‘TikTok famous’.

‘I had no idea what was going to happen so I didn’t feel pressured at the time – but now everyone expects it and I had to make six!’

Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on his first state visit to the US, will attend a state dinner hosted by Joe and Jill Biden on Thursday. Plant-based dishes featuring millet and stuffed mushrooms are on the menu for some 400 guests invited to the White House’s posh state dinner Thursday in honor of the prime minister.

Prime Minister Modi is a vegetarian and First Lady Jill Biden enlisted California-based chef Nancy Curtis, who specializes in plant-based cooking, to help out in the kitchen.

“We are delighted that India is taking the lead in celebrating the International Year of Millet. We have incorporated marinated millet into our menu,” says Nina Curtis.

The state dinner will be followed by a performance by Grammy-winning musician Joshua Bell.

“His performance will be followed by Penn Masala – a South Asian acapella group from the University of Pennsylvania bringing a little piece of my hometown to the White House along with songs inspired by the sounds of India,” said Jill Biden.

Prime Minister Modi reached Washington on Wednesday after leading a massive record-breaking yoga session at UN headquarters in New York. In addition to the state dinner, he will also attend a series of meetings with industry leaders in Washington. Earlier, the first lady and Indian leader visited the National Science Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia, for an event on staff training programs.

Standing up to ten feet tall and garlanded with flowers, decorative sculptures and other trimmings, a royal wedding cake can be one of the highlights of the whole occasion.

These particular cakes are made to feed not just hundreds but thousands, with slices often given out to a wide range friends, charities and other groups supported by the royal newlyweds.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had several cakes made when they married in 1840. One of these was nearly ten feet across and weighed more than 20 stones.

Ornamented with orange blossom and sprigs of myrtle in icing, the elaborate cake was topped by figurines of the bride and groom dressed in ancient Greek costume.

A century later, the cake for the 1948 marriage of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip was nine feet high and weighed a staggering 35 stones.

In keeping with tradition they kept a tier for the christening of their first child, Prince Charles, which took place one year later.

Grace Kelly’s wedding cake was rather different.

Costing a reported £10,000, it contained two live turtle doves, representing fidelity, trust and enduring love. They were released  after the groom, Prince Rainier, cut the cake with his sword.

William and Kate, now the Prince and Princess of Wales. had an eight-tiered traditional fruit cake at their Buckingham Palace reception in 2011.

A team of 50 chefs had spent five weeks making 900 sugar-paste flowers while a piece of lace from Kate’s wedding dress was copied on to the surface of the cake in icing for a special touch.

William’s brother Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, chose a spring theme with lemon and elderflower cake covered in buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.

Meghan and Harry’s cake was designed by Claire Ptak, an American pastry chef from Hackney in East London. The duchess already knew Claire and her work as she had interviewed the chef for lifestyle blog, TheTig.
