Yet Mr. Trudeau has taken a much more critical tone toward Israel in recent weeks, a stance that has caused divisions within the Liberal Party. Three Liberal Party lawmakers voted against the motion.

And from his left, Mr. Trudeau has been criticized by the New Democrats, whose votes he relies on to pass legislation, for not doing more to end Palestinian suffering in the enclave, where more than 30,000 people have been killed and food and medicine thrown away. in a critical supply shortage.

The Conservative Party condemned the motion, charging that Mr. Trudeau’s approach had abandoned Israel and supported terrorism.

“Hamas should focus on, and not on, the state of Israel,” Michael Chong, who speaks on behalf of the party’s foreign affairs, said during the debate.

Earlier in the day, Ms. Joly indicated that several provisions in what the New Democrats had described as “actions to promote peace in the Middle East” were unacceptable to the administration, saying that key policy issues could not be changed by a opposition motion.

One of the main sticking points was the New Democrats’ call for immediate recognition of a Palestinian state, a position that no Group of 7 country has taken.

Other changes negotiated during the day included adding a call to end the illegal trade of arms to Hamas to a section calling on the government to stop allowing arms shipments to Israel . Canada is not currently sending weapons to Israel, and Ms. Joly confirmed Monday that non-lethal military shipments had been suspended.

The motion, which describes Gaza as “currently the most dangerous place in the world to be a child,” also called on the government to immediately restore funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, a step Mr. Trudeau had already taken .

It also called on the government to support the prosecution of all crimes and violations of international law in the region; ensuring that Canadians trapped in Gaza can reach safety; and to impose sanctions on Israeli officials who incite genocide, while maintaining sanctions on Hamas leaders.

An onlooker who saw the pair walking through central London said: ‘Hugh and Claire looked so happy together, they couldn’t stop smiling.

“They seemed like any other couple and seemed to really enjoy each other’s company.”

Hugh recently gave a talk to the young winners of a BBC writing competition with Claire in the audience.

On Wednesday they are said to have enjoyed dinner with Hugh’s Downton co-star Michelle Dockery.

On Friday, Claire shared a photo she took at the airport as she prepared to return to Canada.

When did Hugh divorce his wife Lulu Williams?

A spokesperson for Hugh confirmed in September that he and his ex Lulu, who lived together in their West Sussex home for 25 years, were ending their marriage.

However, it seems that the divorce did not go smoothly. A source revealed: ‘It’s clear Lulu feels like 20 years of marriage counts for nothing.’

Lulu often accompanied her husband to premieres and movie sets and her recent absence led to rumors that the couple was having problems.

The actor, famous for his role as Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, had never shied away from expressing his love for Lulu, having previously called her his ‘base’ and ‘anchor’ and praised his wife as the backbone of their household.

A source told The Sun: ‘Hugh has been away from home a lot this year filming. He lost some weight this summer, he looked neat, tanned and relaxed.’

The heartbreak came just five years after the couple renewed their vows at Graceland Chapel in Las Vegas.

The pair met as teenagers but reunited later in life and got together in their 30s, thanks in no small part to Hugh’s mother Patricia.

Hugh has said: ‘Lulu ran a marquee company… my mother called her to rent some chairs or something and said, ‘Do you remember Hugh?’

“It infuriated me that I had to give my mother all the credit for reintroducing us.”

The former couple later tied the knot in November 1998.

In previous interviews, Bonneville claimed he was ‘completely indebted’ to his wife for the way she supported him throughout his career while he cared for their son Felix, 20, who had his own on-screen success.

“Lulu’s priority was to be a foundation for Felix and me and I am completely indebted to her,” he said.

The Canadian government has reached a financial settlement with one of two Canadian men it says was arbitrarily detained by China for nearly three years in retaliation, the man’s lawyer said.

John K. Phillips, who represents Michael Spavor, told The Associated Press on Wednesday evening: “All I can say is that the matter between Mr. Spavor and the government of Canada has been resolved.”

Mr. Spavor, a businessman who did extensive business in North Korea, and Michael Kovrig, then a Canadian diplomat on leave working for a Belgium-based foreign policy analysis group, were arrested in China in December 2018. They were accused of espionage.

Their detentions in separate prisons were, Canadian officials argued, retaliation for the Canadian arrest of Meng Wanzhou, then chief financial officer of Chinese technology giant Huawei. That arrest took place at the request of the United States.

China released the two men in September 2021 after the US Justice Department struck a deal allowing Ms Meng to return to China in exchange for admitting wrongdoing in a fraud case.

The arrests of Mr. Spavor and Mr. Kovrig underscored the apparent willingness of the Chinese government under Xi Jinping to use arrests and long prison sentences to pressure Western governments to make concessions. They also made clear that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s efforts to improve Canadian-Chinese relations, which had become hostile under previous administrations, had failed.

Last year, Mr. Phillips said he was seeking 10.5 million Canadian dollars for Mr. Spavor. The Globe and Mail reported late Wednesday, citing an unnamed source, that the settlement was about $6 million.

Global Affairs Canada, the country’s foreign ministry, released a statement that made no mention of a settlement.

“China’s arbitrary detention of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig was unjust and unacceptable,” the report said. “While the 1,019 days they were arbitrarily detained by China will never be erased, the Canadian government is committed to supporting them as they attempt to enter a new chapter in their lives, based on their individual circumstances and consequences. of their ordeal and suffering caused by their arbitrary detention by China.”

The ministry declined further comment.

In December, Mr. Kovrig told The Globe and Mail that he was also looking for a settlement of the government and said he would donate any amount in addition to his lost income and expenses to charity. He told the Toronto-based newspaper that the report that the government offered each of the men 3 million Canadian dollars, or $2.2 million, was “even beyond the scope of discussion.” According to him, the actual amount is ‘a lot lower’.

On Thursday, Mr. Kovrig declined to comment in an email on his talks with the government.

There is virtually no public information available about the settlement discussions, which were conducted privately and not through the courts. But a long article published last year by the Globe and Mail, and based largely on anonymous sources, said Mr. Spavor accused Mr. Kovrig of causing his detention by China.

According to the newspaper, Mr. Spavor claims that China singled him out because he unknowingly gave Mr. Kovrig information about North Korea that the diplomat then passed on to Canadian intelligence services. They in turn shared it with Canada’s allies.

In August 2021, Mr Spavor was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of espionage. Mr. Kovrig was awaiting sentencing when he was returned to Canada.

Canadian officials have repeatedly denied that either man was involved in espionage and alleged that China engaged in a form of “hostage diplomacy” to force Ms. Meng’s release.

From his base in Dandong, China, Mr. Spavor led an organization that promoted cultural travel to North Korea. He had several high-level contacts there and once met Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea. In 2013, Mr. Spavor helped organize a highly publicized visit to North Korea by Dennis Rodman, the former NBA star.

In his email, Mr. Kovrig said he was “never involved in espionage activities.” He said: “Any insinuation that I was anything but open and honorable in my interactions with Michael Spavor is false.”

At the time of his arrest in China, Mr. Kovrig was on leave from Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, which lifted his diplomatic immunity, and was working as a senior advisor for the International Crisis Group.

In his email, Mr. Kovrig said that during his time as a diplomat and adviser, he worked to persuade China to convince North Korea to end its nuclear weapons and missile programs. That work, he said, “involved talking to people who had knowledge of the country, conducting analysis and making recommendations.”

Until his arrest, Mr. Kovrig said, “the Chinese government gave me no indication that it objected to my work or travel to China.” Chinese officials, he said, regularly invited him to meetings and conferences, including an invitation from the People’s Liberation Army to appear as a panelist at a forum it organized about two months before his arrest.

“The People’s Republic of China has wrongfully held me as a political hostage to blackmail the government of Canada,” he wrote, referring to the People’s Republic of China. “It is incorrect to suggest that I was detained for any other reason, and it reinforces the Chinese government’s propaganda.”

King Charles held a video call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Buckingham Palace amid his cancer treatment.

Charles sat in front of a computer screen at the palace today as he spoke to Mr. Trudeau.

Charles previously met with the Ambassador of Algeria, Nourredine Yazid, and Samba Mamadou, Ambassador of Mauritania.

It comes as Kate Middleton was announced to return to her royal duties during a practice Trooping the Color ceremony on June 8 by the military yesterday before appearing to make a U-turn today. Kensington Palace has not yet said whether she will attend or not.

Video footage shows the king smiling in the back of his Rolls-Royce as the crowd cheers him as he passes.

The 75-year-old, wearing a light blue patterned tie, appeared cheerful as he met the diplomats.

As he steps back from official visits, other members of the royal family have taken on additional duties.

Queen Camilla has been holding down the fort since King Charles’ cancer diagnosis in January.

She has completed 13 official assignments solo since her husband’s condition came to light, but is now expected to hand over the government to the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne while she takes a break.

The king was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer earlier this year after hospital treatment for an enlarged prostate, which was unrelated to him.

He was treated at the same hospital as the Princess of Wales, who underwent abdominal surgery for an unknown condition in January.

It comes as Royal fans face ticket chaos after rushing to buy seats to watch the Princess of Wales return to royal duties at a practice Trooping of the Color ceremony, after which the military has to make an awkward U-turn and can remove the reference to her. the events page.

The military today backtracked on claims that Kate Middleton would attend the June 8 parade, amid accusations that officials had “jumped the gun” by announcing her presence without consulting the palace.

The tickets sold out on the army website advertising Kate, 42, who reviewed a ‘practice parade’ for the first time in her role as honorary colonel of the Irish Guards on June 8.

The Princess of Wales has been out of action since undergoing abdominal surgery in January and is not expected to return to public duties until the other side of Easter.

The announcement appeared to indicate that Kate will be feeling well enough to attend the June 8 event, but broke protocol because traditionally only the palace can confirm the presence of a royal family.

Kensington Palace has not yet said she will attend, and MailOnline understands Palace officials were not consulted about the announcement. Neither party has released a statement on the debacle.

Nearly a month after international figure skating’s governing body revised the results of a major competition at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, depriving Russia of the gold medal and handing the U.S. team a long-delayed victory, a deal broke Monday new fight over the outcome. .

Eight members of the Canadian team who participated in the team competition in Beijing did so has filed a case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport demanding that they be awarded bronze medals in the team event. The court announced the complaint, but did not reveal any details.

The Canadians, whose case was joined by their country’s speed skating federation and national Olympic committee, are expected to argue that figure skating’s world governing body erred when it revised the results of the competition in January after a Russian skater who had competed, teenage prodigy Kamila Valieva, was given a four-year ban for doping.

The profession, and three others filed by Russian interests over the results, has ensured that a controversy that has raged for almost two years will now be expanded – complicating the awarding of the medals to all skaters until it is finally resolved.

The Canadians and others have claimed that when the skating body, the International Skating Union, removed the points won by Ms Valieva from the results, it failed to increase the point totals of the athletes who competed against her on the two occasions she went to the match. ice.

If that had happened, the Canadian team would have been upgraded to third place in the competition, knocking Russia off the podium altogether.

In to announce After planning to appeal earlier this month, the Canadian Skating Federation took pains to note that it had no objection to the decision to elevate the United States to the gold medal and Japan from bronze to silver. The federation, Skate Canada, said its sole motivation was to ensure “that rules and regulations are consistently and fairly enforced.”

It is not the only team to appeal the ISU’s decision. The Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport, which serves as the final arbiter of disputes in global sport, said in a statement on Monday that in addition to the Canadian appeal, it had also received three cases backed by Russian interests seeking to overturn the results to undo. , and award Russia the team gold.

The decision to allow Russia to earn a medal at all, despite fielding an athlete who was later convicted of doping, raised even more questions about Russian influence over top sports organizations. It also highlighted global sport’s inability to enforce doping rules and punish athletes and countries in a timely manner. On Monday, the court offered no timetable for a resolution of the four new cases, signaling many more months of uncertainty.

The Valieva case turned the Beijing Games on its head, leading to overnight emergency hearings on her eligibility and an awkward compromise after the end of the team competition: Unsure who had won, the International Olympic Committee opted to sit out during the event not to award medals.

Instead, the podium ceremony was adjusted, with the teams from Russia, the United States and Japan presented with flowers and hugs instead of gold, silver and bronze.

The controversy raised questions not only about cheating and honesty, but also about how an athlete who was only 15 at the time and considered a minor could be involved in a doping scheme.

Under intense media scrutiny, Ms Valieva’s performance slumped after news of her failed test was revealed months earlier during the Games. In their arguments in court, Russian officials later claimed that the banned supplement in her system, a drug used to treat heart disease, was ingested after her grandfather prepared a strawberry dessert on the same cutting board he had used to crush his medicine.

That excuse was not accepted. And the latest round of legal actions means the prospect of an eventual medal ceremony is as remote as ever. Although the IOC said last month it was eager to present the medals to the athletes who won them, it had not yet indicated when the medal ceremony would take place for any of the teams involved.

A Canadian judge ruled Thursday that the deadly rampage of a man who crashed his truck into five members of a Muslim family was an act of terror motivated by white supremacist ideology and sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years for his crimes. .

The country’s criminal prosecution said the terrorism finding by Ontario Supreme Court Justice Renee Pomerance was the first in Canada against a far-right extremist. The perpetrator, Nathaniel Veltman, 23, murdered four members of the Afzaal family in London, Ontario, during his rampage in June 2021 and was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder in November.

At his trial, Mr. Veltman’s lawyers did not dispute that he deliberately drove his Ram truck into the family. But they argued it was an impulsive act caused by consuming psilocybin, commonly known as magic mushrooms, several hours earlier. They also said he had mental health issues and had difficulty controlling “an urge or obsession with putting his foot on the accelerator” of his pickup.

But Judge Pomerance said Mr. Veltman was motivated by white supremacy.

“You could go so far as to characterize this as a textbook example of terrorist motives and intent,” Judge Pomerance told the courtroom in London, Ontario, according to news agency The Canadian Press.

“He wanted to intimidate the Muslim community. “He wanted to follow in the footsteps of other mass murderers, and he wanted to inspire others to commit murderous acts,” she said, adding that it was an “inescapable conclusion” that the killing was an act of terror.

“The perpetrator did not know the victims,” the judge said during the ruling, in which she never mentioned Mr Veltman by name to prevent him from receiving publicity. “He had never met them. He killed them because they were Muslim.”

The terrorism finding was largely symbolic and did not affect the conviction of Mr. Veltman, 23. Under Canadian law, convictions for first-degree murder carry a mandatory life sentence with no possibility of parole for 25 years. But Sarah Shaikh, the prosecutor, told reporters the finding was still important.

“It is an acknowledgment that the perpetrator’s attack was not only against the Afzaal family, but also against the entire Muslim community,” she said.

“It was also an attack on values that we as Canadians hold dear – inclusivity, community, decency and multiculturalism,” she added.

From the time of the murder, many members of Canada’s Muslim community had called for the killings to be formally declared an act of terror.

Mr. Veltman told police he pointed his full-size pickup at his victims because he believed they were Muslims based on their clothing, prosecutors said during his 10-week trial.

Mr. Veltman drove past the Afzaals at a busy intersection and made a U-turn to mow them down, prosecutors said during the trial.

He killed three generations of the family. The youngest was Yumnah Afzaal, 15. Her parents, Salman Afzaal, a 46-year-old physiotherapist, and Madiha Salman, 44, a doctoral student in civil engineering, died, as did Mr Afzaal’s mother, Talat Afzaal, 74.

During the trial, prosecutors said Mr. Veltman had become obsessed with white supremacist ideology and wrote a manifesto titled “A White Awakening” just five days before he mowed down the family.

A young boy was the only survivor of the attack.

A jury convicted Mr. Veltman in November of first-degree murder and attempted murder, but the terrorism finding was postponed until Thursday’s hearing.

Tabinda Bukhari, Ms Salman’s mother, said on behalf of the family outside the courthouse that while Thursday’s ruling recognized that hatred had cost the lives of four people, it would not replace what her family had lost.

“It will not fix the broken pieces of our lives, our identities and our security,” she said, reading from a statement.

New details are emerging about the Canadian tourist accused of kidnapping and rape an 80 year old grandmother of Alzheimer's in a luxury resort in the Bahamas.

Gordon Wilkie, 61, of New Waterford, Nova Scotia, was arrested and charged with rape during the shocking January 28 incident at the Warwick Hotel Paradise Island Bahamas.

DailyMail.com can confirm that Wilkie is a faculty member at Novia Scotia Community College, where he specializes in renewable energy, and has been placed on leave following his arrest.

“It's really hard to find just the right words because in our minds it's just beyond horrific,” the victim's son, David Ahrens, told DailyMail.com in a telephone interview on Friday. “It's just the worst scenario.”

Meanwhile, Special Agent Tom Justice of US Homeland Security Investigations, who happened to be staying at the same hotel, has emerged as a hero in the case after joining the search for the kidnapped woman and restraining Wilkie until he could be arrested by the Bahamian police. .

The alleged attack follows a U.S. State Department travel warning of a spike in homicides in the Bahamas, and recent allegations from two Kentucky mothers who say they were raped by staff at the Pirate's Cove beach resort on Grand Bahama .

Wilkie is being held without bail in the Bahamas and his attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday morning.

Baillie declined to comment on individual employees, citing privacy laws.

“I can confirm that any employee facing serious criminal charges such as this will be placed on leave while the matter is before the courts and pending the results of an internal investigation,” she added.

The victim in the case is also Canadian, but her family has no connection to the accused attacker other than staying at the same resort in the Bahamas during their vacation.

Ahrens, who shared his mother's photo publicly but asked not to be named, said the family is speaking out to demand “full justice” for her and to warn others of the dangers to vulnerable family members.

According to Ahrens, that one GoFundMe campaign To help cover his mother's medical and legal costs, she had traveled with his sister on a short vacation to the Bahamas when the attack occurred.

Ahrens said his sister kept a close eye on their mother throughout the trip, but the brazen kidnapping happened in a split second when they became separated in an elevator.

Ahrens said that on the last night of the trip, his sister and mother were chatting at happy hour with friends they met at the resort, including Officer Justice, who was in the Bahamas on temporary duty.

At that point, Wilkie, whom they had not met before, invited himself to join them.

“They thought it was strange, but you know, everyone is on vacation,” he said.

Ahrens said that when the group of friends got up to go to dinner, Wilkie also invited himself, which they also found 'a bit strange'.

After dinner, Ahrens said Wilkie got into the same elevator as his sister and mother, who were heading to their shared room to get ready for bed.

When the elevator reached their floor, the nurse got out, but when she turned to help her mother, the doors were already closing, he said.

He said that according to his sister, the doors seemed to close faster than normal, but noted that there was no camera in the elevator to see if the “close door” button had been pressed.

“Then there will be panic,” he said. 'They were looking for my mother and begged reception and security for help, which they didn't do for over half an hour.'

Officer Justice and other guests immediately joined the search, walking the hotel hallways for about 40 minutes and shouting the victim's name.

When the Bahamian police finally arrived, Justice received a group text message from the resort friends participating in the search, and went to the hotel lobby to meet the police.

“He presses whatever floor he was on, and the elevator arrives and the doors open, and there's my mother with the attacker,” Ahrens said.

“He saw it, and immediately he saw my mother holding her underwear. So he reacted immediately and just went into the elevator and pinned him down,” he added.

Wilkie was arrested by Bahamian authorities and accused of raping the vulnerable woman in his hotel room.

Examinations at the hospital confirmed that the 80-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted, and Ahrens said she was able to provide a detailed statement despite her memory impairment.

“She made a statement about the incident that evening and it was very, very detailed,” he said.

Although Ahrens was not traveling with his mother, he immediately flew down when he heard of the attack and listened in horror as a police sergeant read him the statement his mother had made at the hospital.

'It's shockingly detailed and so disturbing. It's just terrible. No one should ever hear something like that. Period of time.'

Homeland Security Investigations' Charlotte field office released a statement confirming the incident and commending Agent Justice.

“HSI management is aware of the actions taken by SA Justice during his interim service and is proud of the manner in which he has gone above and beyond to protect the welfare of others,” the statement said.

“His actions are consistent with the highest standards of this agency.”

Wilkie first appeared in the case on February 2, but was not required to enter a plea, according to the court Nassau guard.

He was denied bail, but he can apply for bail in the High Court.

He is scheduled to appear on May 29 for the filing of a voluntary indictment, which will expedite the case to the Supreme Court for trial.

“I am pleased that this man was immediately taken into custody and I hope he will remain behind bars for as long as necessary,” Ahrens said. “This is a very dangerous person.”

Prince Harry and Meghan were given a Canadian send off on Friday night with Michael Bublé singing re-written lyrics to Frank Sinatra’s classic ‘My Way’, in a nod to the Duke.

The couple were attending a lavish gala dinner with 200 guests in Vancouver to wrap up their tour in preparation for the 2025 Winter Invictus Games.

Shortly before a speech by the Duke, Bublé performed a rewritten version of Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’ with nods to Prince Harry littered throughout.

It included the line: ‘You’ve earned each day, the right to say, I did it my way,’ and referred to Harry as a ‘visionary.’

The Canadian crooner also sung, ‘Our healing wishes for your dad’, in a touching gesture to King Charles III who was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Harry, wearing a dark suit and a black tie, then spoke about the Invictus Games telling the audience that the athletes, who are comprised of injured and sick servicemen and women, embodied ‘courage, leadership, and fortitude.’

Meghan, 42, wore a one-shoulder olive green dress by Canadian designer Greta Constantine, a necklace by Logan Hollowell and Manolo Blahnik shoes.

Meghan and Harry had been expected to head home to Montecito, California following three days of Invictus Games events in Whistler and Vancouver but extended their trip by a night to enjoy a party with athletes and organizers.

Although not part of the official schedule and intended to be held away from the media, the gala – which is being held at the Vancouver Convention Centre – was signposted with black and gold Invictus signs.

Towards the end of the night, the crowd gave a standing ovation as Prince Harry took to the stage – who joked that he was going to start singing before welcoming Bublé to the stage.

Bublé said it was emotional for him to be there and that he loved that ‘we can show Harry and Meghan how beautiful this place is’.

Other lyrics swapped by Bublé included: ‘Nothing tames, Invictus Games, you play them your way’, ‘One man, life-changing plan, he does all he can, he’s a visionary’.

In his speech, Prince Harry spoke of the Invictus Games and touched on how much he was looking forward to next years event.

In his speech, Prince Harry said: ‘These games have been so warmly welcomed by our Four Host First Nations, who have opened their arms and land to each of us, not only tonight but in the lead up to and during the Games next year.

‘This year will mark ten years of the Invictus Games. The past decade has been a testament to the power of resilience and the unbreakable spirit you all exemplify. And boy have we had fun on the way!

‘The Invictus Games are not just a competition; they’re a way of life, a celebration of the human spirit.

‘The games provide a platform for us to showcase your abilities, to inspire the world, and honor the sacrifices of those we have lost.

‘It is a reminder that we are not defined by our injuries, but by our strength, our commitment, and our ability to overcome adversity.

‘Invictus is not necessarily about winning a medal, but about the bonds that are built between nations; about the shared journey of recovery that competitors and their families are a part of.

‘As we continue to prepare for next year, let us remember the words of William Ernest Henley, the poet whose work serves as the namesake for The Invictus Games.

‘”I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul.” Let us embrace these words, and let us continue to inspire each other, and the world, with courage, with leadership, and with fortitude.’

Roughly 200 people were in attendance, which began with the Duke and Duchess being led in by representatives from the Tsleil-Waututh Nation who sang and drummed in traditional regalia.

Johnna Sparrow, an Indigenous advisor for the Games, and sister of Chief Wayne Sparrow of the Musqueam Indian Band, gifted the couple with woven blankets for each of their children from the Salish people.

Sparrow said the children could dance with the blankets or wrap themselves in them when their parents are away to remind them that ‘their parents are off doing good work.’

The party followed a morning spent at the Hillcrest Community Centre in downtown Vancouver where Harry took part in an adapted wheelchair curling event.

An enthusiastic Duke of Sussex showed up 90 minutes ahead of the official 11am start time to meet some of the athletes privately, while Meghan arrived at the very last moment.

Meghan was glamorously dressed for the occasion in a $1,250 Sentaler camel coat and sculptural gold earrings while Harry was casual in a sports jacket and jeans.

Bublé – a long-time supporter of the Games – also took to the ice for a spot of curling; telling the crowd: ‘Ladies and gentlemen of the press, prepare to see your hometown boy do well!’

The gala comes at the very end of the couple’s three-day visit to Canada to mark one year to go until the 2025 Invictus Games which will be held in Whistler, British Columbia.

Day two saw Harry whoop with delight as he tried out a skeleton bobsled – hitting a top speed of 61mph – watched by Meghan who filmed him on her iPhone.

The pair also met with Nigerian power lifter and ex-soldier Peacemaker Azuegbulam who also tried out the skeleton – despite being a double amputee who had never seen snow before.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, Peacemaker said he was thrilled to be reunited with the couple after being introduced to them at Invictus Games in Düsseldorf, Germany, last year where he won a gold medal in the powerlifting.

Now preparing to take part in the skeleton competition at the 2025 Games, despite only making his debut on Thursday, Peacemaker said sport had helped him come to terms with the injuries he sustained during a firefight with Boko Haram terrorists in November 2020.

He said: ‘At first I felt ashamed because of my injuries but then I was introduced to the Games and began with playing volleyball. Now I feel good, now I feel recovered.

‘I am proud to be the first Invictus champion from Africa and I feel recharged. It totally changed my mindset.’

The appearance at Hillcrest Community Centre – a multi-sport complex run by the city of Vancouver – came a few hours after the couple appeared on Good Morning America, where Harry insisted ‘I love my family’ and said he ‘jumped on a plane’ to visit the King ‘as soon as I could’ after speaking on the phone about his cancer diagnosis.

The 39-year-old also revealed he was ‘grateful’ to have seen his father Charles III in person and hopes the diagnosis can have a ‘reunifying effect’ on the Royal Family.

Camera crews from ABC have been following the couple throughout their time in Canada and were seen on Thursday conducting an interview next to the track at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

On Wednesday, the pair made their appearance on the slopes of the Whistler Blackcomb Mountain flanked by GMA presenter Will Reeve – son of the late Superman actor Christopher.

The trip also came after the couple became embroiled in rows over the rebranding of their website to Sussex.com, Harry’s 30-minute meeting with his cancer-stricken father in London and criticism over the Sussexes’ heavy use of private jets.

Despite the swirl of controversy, the Duke and Duchess have appeared unaffected during their trip and were seen beaming in exclusive DailyMail.com photos beaming as they left a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner in Whistler on Wednesday night.

Earlier that day, the couple met First Nations youth ambassadors representing the native Canadian tribes on whose land the Games are taking place.

The duo privately toured the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Center in Whistler where they were shown around by Chief Nelson and Wilson Williams and met artists who created the new Invictus Games logo for the event.

In a statement, Harry and Meghan said: ‘The evening and presentation were extremely meaningful.

‘IG2025 and the couple could not be more proud to share the artists’ piece with the world.

‘The couple recognizes the significance of the First Nation communities welcoming the Invictus Games onto their sacred land and are thankful for their warmth and hospitality.’

A couple from Canada have revealed how they swapped their stone home for a 20ft yurt – and claim it has changed their lives 'for the better'.

Joe and Leah Hinterberger were interviewed for the YouTube channel Exploring Alternatives and offered viewers a tour of their roundhouse that they share with their two cats Peeko and Lily.

In the short documentary, they reveal how they lived in their new home for five months and it cost them much less than a conventional home of just $18,000.

Leah told DailyMail.com that the biggest challenge they face is the lack of running water or indoor plumbing, so they have to be 'very conscious' of their water consumption.

Another downside is that their restroom is outside, and going out in the middle of the night in freezing temperatures “can be a challenge.”

In winter, the pipes of their outdoor shower also freeze, so they joined a local gym so they can wash in comfort.

However, Leah says these things are mild inconveniences and there are more pros to yurt living than cons.

She explained: 'On the other side of the coin, one of the things we love most about living in our yurt is how close you are to nature.

'Curious creatures regularly come by to see what we are doing.

'The rain is probably my favorite part, the sound of it dancing off the canvas is so soothing.

“It's a small space that can be cleaned up in such a short time, but it's very important to stay organized.”

Joe and Leah moved out of their physical home in June 2023, after starting new jobs in the area where they now live.

Joe works as a truck mechanic, while Leah works on the First Nation Reserve where their yurt is located.

Before moving into the circular building, they lived in a converted school bus.

However, Leah said the refurbished vehicle was “a little cramped, so we started looking for alternatives.”

Explaining how they ended up on a yurt, Leah said: 'After deciding to ditch the school bus, I started researching something that would fit our priorities, minimalist and eco-friendly options.

“Yurts popped up. I think I took it and ran with it at this point. Joe agreed and we contacted a company called Groovy Yurts to tour their facility.

'During the tour we fell in love with the 20ft natural wood “Super Ger” they had on display. We ordered our yurt that day and picked it up a few weeks later.

'The yurt is super comfortable for us because we love camping so much.

'The yurt resembles a very large tent, made of natural material and imported from Mongolia.'

The couple said their goal for the future was to build a log cabin, but since they've been in the yurt, they “really don't have a plan for when we'll move out of our yurt, if that ever happens.”

As for their living costs, Leah says they no longer pay a mortgage and their only expenses are hydropower, food supply, insurance, mobile phones, gym membership and fuel for their cars.

For others considering yurt life, she concludes: 'Yurt life is not for everyone and I think you really have to be open-minded and attuned to your own capabilities and limitations.

“We gave away most of our belongings and kept only the things we need to get by. Some would say this isn't a luxurious life, but you soon realize how little you need to make you truly happy.

'We found that releasing attachment to personal belongings led to a less stressful life because you don't have to worry about losing things, breaking things or taking them.

'We try to be kinder to our planet with steps that are achievable for us as a couple.

Fans of a CANADIAN fast food chain say it is “better than KFC” and are set to open their first restaurants in Britain.

Mary Brown's (MB) Chicken, which has more than 300 stores across Canada, plans to open its first store in Britain within days.

Mary Brown's Chicken will open its first branch in Britain within days

The brand is known for items like the Big Mary chicken sandwich and tater poutine – a dish of fries and cheese, topped with gravy.

Fast food fans in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, can sample these dishes at MB's from Wednesday 21 February.

The store will create 25 new jobs and there are plans to quickly open locations in Belfast, Northern Ireland and the rest of Britain “very soon”.

The Sun has asked MB Chicken for a list of locations where it plans to open stores, as well as menu items and prices.

In the meantime, these are some of the menu items available to Mary Brown customers in Canada to give you an idea of what UK customers can expect:

  • Southwestern Grilled Chicken Sandwich Combo (Grilled Chicken Sandwich with choice of a side and a can of soft drink) $13.99 / £11.11
  • Big Mary combo (whole chicken breast in sesame seed bun plus small taters and a can of soft drink) $12.99/£10.31
  • Poutine and Pop (tasty taters topped with cheese curd or shredded cheese smothered in MB gravy and a can of soda) $5.99 / £4.76
  • Two-piece chicken meal (fresh breaded chicken with small potatoes, salad and a can of soft drink) $13.79/£10.95
  • Buffalo Chicken Tenders (white meat tenders breaded according to the Signature recipe, mixed with buffalo sauce and deep fried) $9.29/£7.28

The above items and prices are just a guide taken from the Canadian Mary Brown website.

We'll update information about what will be available in UK and Ireland locations as soon as we have it.

Hadi Chahin, CEO of MB, said: “We are thrilled to introduce our legendary fried chicken to the wonderful people of Lisburn.

“What makes MB Chicken special is our delicious, handcrafted menu and genuine hospitality; we have been a beloved tradition in Canada for generations.

“We can't wait to share our passion for delicious, quality, ready-to-eat food with our new friends in Britain.”

The branch will be open seven days a week from 11am to 11pm.

Fans can also order meals for delivery via the MB Chicken app, as well as Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats.

Fans are already happy that the brand will land on British soil.

I tried the McDonald's Breakfast Wrap with a major change in a crucial ingredient

On X, formerly known as Twitter, someone wrote: 'If you tried Mary Brown's you wouldn't eat KFC.

“People waited up to 30 minutes for the chicken to be ready.”

Another wrote: “I've always enjoyed Mary Brown's Chicken much more than KFC!”

Founded in 1969, the chain was founded by Mary Brown's husband, who was inspired by his wife, Mary Brown's, fried chicken recipe.

The first branch opened in St John's Newfoundland before expanding to Canda.

MB is not the only fast food chain looking to expand in Britain.

Chicken chain Popeyes has unveiled rapid expansion plans to almost double in size this year, a move that will create around 2,000 jobs.

Wendy's, the third largest hamburger chain in the world after McDonald's and Burger King, returned to the UK in 2021.
