THE football world held its breath ahead of tonight’s big international clash as San Marino attempted to end their two-decade wait for victory.

However, the microstate in northeastern Italy will have to wait and see after missing a golden opportunity for a golden win.

San Marino is ranked as the worst national team according to the FIFA rankings, having lost 192 of the 201 matches it had contested before tonight.

It is the fifth smallest country in the world with a landmass of 61 km2 – about half the size of Manchester – and a population of just 33,000.

Yet goals in each of their last three matches – including against Denmark, who were until recently ranked in the top 20 countries in the world – appeared to show an upturn in their fortunes.

And a match against Caribbean side Saint Kitts and Nevis – ranked 63 places above San Marino at 210th in the FIFA rankings – presented a great opportunity to finally get a win on the board after twenty years.

San Marino was sensationally the bookmakers’ favorites to win the match in Serravalle.

Things started well when Filippo Berardi scored a penalty after 21 minutes to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

It led to a fan, who goes by ‘San Marino fan account’ on social media and started a campaign to have Jose Mourinho rule the nation, saying: ‘BERARDI YOU SEXY SEXY SUN OF A BEACH.’

The cheers didn’t last long, however, as Tyquan Terrell evened the score in the 31st minute.

Things got worse on the stroke of half-time when Andre Burley scored a second for the visitors after the home side failed to clear their lines from a corner.

Any hopes of San Marino mounting a comeback were crushed shortly after the break when Harry Panayiotou scored a third in the 49th minute.

Each Premier League stadium ranked by the number of pubs nearby, one of which has more than 130 local drinking establishments

The match would end 3-1, meaning San Marino is now without a win in 137 games.

And it means Liechtenstein and Anguilla can both breathe a sigh of relief that their own joint record of 35 games without a win would not become the new holder.

Liechtenstein is the only team to beat San Marino in its history, with a 1-0 win in 2004 thanks to a goal from Andy Selva, the country’s all-time top scorer with eight goals.

San Marino captain Matteo Vitaioli made his debut some 17 years ago but is yet to win.

However, all is not lost.

The match will be repeated on Sunday, which means Vitaioli and Co will have the chance to make amends.

As quoted by the BBC ahead of the first match of the double-header on the possibility of a victory, the 34-year-old said: “It would mean that I am part of the history of the national team of my home country, so it is final goal.

“It represents an opportunity to leave a mark, something that cannot be lost. It would be something that would be remembered in 2050 and beyond because there have been so few victories.”

A NEARBY star is about to go supernova, finally making it visible to the naked eye.

According to NASA, this is a one-time event, as this recurring nova eruption only happens about once every 80 years.

There is no risk that Earth will be hit by the mighty explosion, which is said to have the same force as a hydrogen bomb.

When NASA says the star is “close,” what it actually means is that it is in a galaxy 3,000 light-years away.

The star, T Coronae Borealis or T CrB, last exploded in 1946.

But NASA astronomers believe the rocket will explode again between February and September 2024.

Normally the galaxy is too faint to see with the naked eye.

During a supernova, T Coronae Borealis will be as bright as the North Star Polaris for several days.

According to NASA, amateur astronomers will be able to observe the star in the sky for a little longer using binoculars.

What is a supernova?

A supernova is the largest explosion humans can ever see and the most powerful combustion in the recorded universe.

They are the result of the death of a massive star.

When a star runs out of juice, it loses the pressure that keeps it from collapsing.

The giant, hot star will then cool and suddenly collapse.

Another type of supernova can occur when a star orbits an Earth-sized white dwarf.

If the white dwarf – what’s left of a star after a supernova – collides with a large star or pulls too much matter from a star, that star will explode.

The sun will one day suffer the same fate, billions of years from now, when it is at least five times larger than it is today.

NASA astronomers believe that about two or three supernovae occur every century in galaxies like our own Milky Way.

But space dust and debris block our view of most supernovae in our Milky Way.

Where in the sky?

The exploding T Coronae Borealis will appear as a bright “new” star near the constellation Coronae Borealis.

Coronae Borealis, also known as the Northern Crown, is a small U-shaped constellation between the constellations Hercules and Boots.

NASA advises luminary astronomers to “get familiar” with the Corona Borealis star system sooner or later.

“This returning nova is just one of five in our Milky Way,” NASA added.

“This happens because T CrB is a binary system with a white dwarf and a red giant.

‘The stars are so close that, as the red giant becomes unstable due to increasing temperature and pressure and begins to shed its outer layers, the white dwarf collects that matter on its surface.

‘The white dwarf’s shallow, dense atmosphere eventually warms enough to cause a runaway thermonuclear reaction – which produces the nova we see from Earth.’

And the study even found that it can reduce the risk of divorce and “deepen understanding and empathy within a relationship.”

The report says: “Singing songs with deep emotional content together in the shower can significantly deepen the emotional bond between partners.

“Music and singing naturally release dopamine – known as the ‘feel-good’ neurotransmitter in the brain.

“This chemical boost not only improves mood, but also improves feelings of happiness and satisfaction within the relationship, contributing to a more positive shared environment.”

It adds: “Singing has been scientifically shown to reduce stress levels by reducing cortisol in the body.

“Singing together in the shower offers a dual benefit: It acts as a stress-reducing activity that also promotes emotional connection, reducing potential triggers for marital discord.”

A spokesperson for bathroom company Plumbworld, which commissioned the research, claimed: ‘Singing songs together in the shower can increase happiness and make couples feel closer to each other.

“It shows how music and doing things together can improve our relationships. It’s a nice way to communicate more.”

We know that the sun follows an eleven-year solar cycle, which is controlled by its magnetic field.

It is powered by the poles on the sun changing places about every eleven years.

It is said that the sun has reached the stage in this cycle where increased solar activity can result in more sightings of the Northern Lights.

Eruptions and eruptions from the solar surface have been observed to become increasingly intense and extreme.

WHAT ARE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?

The Northern Lights, also known as the Northern Lights, are created when Earth’s magnetosphere is bombarded by solar wind.

It is the solar wind that interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field, creating the beautiful green-blue appearance.

Charged particles from the sun hit atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere and give them a higher energy state.

When the atoms fall back to their lower energy state, light is released.

HOW TO BEST SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS

A NASA study 75 years of data show that March is often the best month to see the Northern Lights.

With the sun in its high solar activity phase, this month could be your best chance to see the best Northern Lights in the next decade.

Britons stunned by stunning Northern Lights show as far south as Cornwall – with more to come

To see the natural phenomenon at its best, a visit to a country in the Arctic Circle is ideal.

However, sometimes the lights are so strong that you can see them as far away as Florida.

It is best to check the space weather forecasts for your region.

You can take a look at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website.

When it is dark, go to an area where there is no light pollution and be patient as it may take some time for the Northern Lights to appear.

Please note that the Northern Lights may look dim with your eyes, but bright through a camera due to a higher aperture setting.

Auroras – how do they work?

Here’s the official explanation from NASA…

  • The dancing lights of the auroras provide spectacular views from the ground, but also capture the imagination of scientists studying incoming energy and particles from the sun
  • Auroras are one result of such energetic particles, which can blast out from the Sun both in a steady stream called the solar wind and as a result of giant outbursts known as coronal mass ejections, or CMEs.
  • After a journey to Earth that can take two to three days, the sun’s particles and magnetic fields cause the release of particles already trapped near Earth, which in turn triggers reactions in the upper atmosphere in which oxygen and nitrogen molecules produce photons releasing light.
  • The result: the northern and southern lights.

MAILBOX: In our new Q&A series, we invite you to submit your questions on any topic to be answered by some of The Mail’s brilliant stars. Following Peter Hitchens last month, Royal Editor Rebecca English will be in the hotseat today from 12pm UK time (8am Eastern Time). Follow our live coverage here and ask your questions in the comments section:

“Do you think Harry is really enjoying his life in the United States?”

REBECCA: Good question, Sam. I think in many ways he certainly seems more content than he ever was as a working royal. On the occasions I spoke to him, he made it clear to me (and many others) that he was not really happy with the life he had, and if it were up to him, he would just run away and work in wildlife conservation in Africa. But he’s burned a lot of bridges along the way. Not only with his family, but with many friends who I know are not happy with the way he left and some of the choices he made. Personally, I would find that difficult.

‘I enjoyed seeing more of the Edinburghs and the Gloucesters, while the King and Princess of Wales were unfortunately ill. Do you think we can still highlight their activities even after HM and HRH return to the public forum? I believe both couples are extremely underrated. They do such fantastic work! Thank you and all the best from Canada!’

REBECCA: Thanks Wendy, and thanks for contacting us from Canada – let’s hope the King can reschedule his visit there later this year! Yes I think so. We’ve gotten more details about their engagements in recent weeks – and been invited to cover them in person – than we have in many years. I think recent events have shown how genuinely interested many people are in the work they do, especially in Edinburgh. They’ve never sought the spotlight, but now that it’s shining on them, they’re happy to make the most of it. Take a look at a video I recorded about Prince Edward to celebrate his 60th birthday, based on an exclusive profile I wrote about him for the Daily Mail last week. I spent a day with the Prince and we talked about a whole range of topics. It’s on ours Daily Mail Royals YouTube channel!

‘What would Diana have thought of the feud between William and Harry? If she were alive today, what would she say to them?’

REBECCA: Honestly, I don’t think things would have gotten this far if Diana hadn’t died. She would have been a glue that held things together. I think it is very difficult for many of us to understand how devastating it was for them to lose their mother at such a young and impressionable age.

File photo dated 21/07/21 of the then Duke of Cambridge (left) and Duke of Sussex arriving for the unveiling of a statue they commissioned for their mother Diana, Princess of Wales, in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, London, on what would have been her 60th birthday. The Duke of Sussex has reportedly claimed he was physically assaulted by his brother over his marriage to Meghan Markle. Date of issue: Thursday, January 5, 2023. PA Photo. In a leaked extract from his highly anticipated autobiography, Spare, to The Guardian newspaper, Harry claimed the confrontation took place at his London home in 2019 and left him with a visible injury to his back after the Prince of Wales attacked his brother had grabbed his hand. collar and tore his chain before slamming him to the ground. ‘I understand you are protecting your family, but in these terrible times of sleuths and false reporting, surely Prince William and Catherine can share some information that will deter internet sleuths? In your opinion, when do you expect a press release regarding Catherine’s health and return to public duties, and how can their team be more proactive about sharing information?’

REBECCA: Hello Eon, and thank you for your question. The rumors and suspicions we have seen in recent weeks, especially on social media, about the health and well-being of the Princess of Wales are nothing short of despicable. I know, although she doesn’t have her own social media accounts, Catherine is unaware of some of what was said and understandably finds it disturbing. Wales’ attitude was not to respond to the trolls – why give them the oxygen of publicity? Which is understandable in many ways. That said, I believe that Kensington Palace was a bit naive in thinking that one of the most famous women in the world could disappear without a trace for three months without people worrying about her, and that they would rather be more proactive in providing updates should have given. I think this would have clouded the suspicion somewhat. It’s unlikely we’ll hear much more until she’s ready to return to public duties. Last time I checked, this was probably after Easter.

It is the biggest outsider to win at the festival so far this week, as pre-race favorite Cuthbert Dibble had to settle for third.

Fergie co-owns the seven-year-old horse with Ged Mason and John and Lisa Hales.

After the win, the ex-Red Devils boss said: “Well, that was fantastic, what a jockey.

When asked if it was “the same buzz as the Champions League”, he added: “Oh no, that’s different, that’s different.”

He also claimed that the horse is “absolutely” a champion in the making.

Jockey Harry Cobden said: “I can’t believe this horse won, he was 25-1 and I thought he should have been 125-1.

“Fair play to the trainer, Hannah, who rides him most days. The blinders have made a huge difference.

“I am very happy with this winner.”

Former England manager Sam Allardyce was spotted with Fergie as Monmiral crossed the line.

BRYONY FROST thinks an unknown 66-1 has a ‘brilliant’ chance of a shock success at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.

Sun Racing’s star columnist put in an extra good word for Stavvy in Wednesday’s Champion Bumper.

The Flat race is run over two miles and has been a benchmark for brilliant horses over the years, won by the likes of Sir Gerhard, Envoi Allen and Cue Card.

CHELTENHAM BETTING OFFERS – BEST FREE BETTS FOR THE FESTIVAL

Frost rode Stavvy to a nine-length win when the four-year-old gray was last seen at Southwell three weeks ago.

The Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained runner, who was sent off at 4-1, found an extra gear a furlong away and drove past the post.

Stavvy was the last horse to reach the 24-runner field when the declaration was made on Monday.

But she told Sun Racing the horse has a strong chance of beating his odds.

She said: “He is a beautiful horse that I won on for Jane Chapple-Hyam at Southwell and he really impressed me.

“He was in great condition when I worked him at Newmarket on Thursday – I struggled to pull him up!

“Now he’s in line and I, believe me, he’s definitely not a 66-1 shot!”

Most read in Horse Racing

That’s Frost’s only booked ride at the festival at the time of this writing, so she’ll give anything to pull off an upset.

But she also had a good word to say about some of Paul Nicholls’ chances.

Frost, who finishes at Ditcheat, said: “Paul is sending a select team, but there is still plenty to look forward to.

“You can scratch Stage Star’s last run and you will see a much better horse if he goes for Ryanair.

“It is a front-runner’s race that requires good jumping and he can certainly do that.

“I recently galloped Stay Away Fay – who is in the Brown Advisory – at Kempton and he jumped impeccably.

“He is an extreme stayer who you wouldn’t trade for anything else.

‘Last year he won the Albert Bartlett but fencing is definitely his thing – he has trained brilliantly and is in very good condition.

“Ginny’s Destiny is one of the favorites for the Turner and rightly so as he is constantly improving.

“This is of course his biggest test to date, but he is a course specialist, knows his way around and is a very flexible jumper.

“Il Ridoto is back for another crack at the Plate and he is completely refreshed, boxing and playing.

“He always makes a bold offer and will do it again.

“And I have to mention Bravemans game in the Gold Cup. Hopefully the ground won’t be too sticky, because that will test his endurance.

But he’s back where the team wants him and if things dry out a bit by the end of the week, he’ll blast over the last two hurdles there.

“Paul has a nice team for the Bumper, and Teeshan looks great. He has made a lot of gains in the past two weeks.

“But don’t forget the Quebecois, a kind of Captain Teague – who will welcome the step up if he goes for the Albert Bartlett – and who has also worked well.”

Many climate discussions revolve around time. There are lines going up across the graphs predicting the next century. Scientists set deadlines for the coming decades. Every month seems to bring news of a new heat record. The feeling that time is running out can be intoxicating.

As the Earth warms, natural wonders – coral reefs, glaciers, archipelagos – are at risk of damage and disappearance. This has motivated some travelers to engage in ‘last chance tourism’, visiting places threatened by climate change before it is too late.

“For thousands of years, humans have raced to be the first to climb a peak, cross a border, or document a new species or landscape,” Paige McClanahan writes in a piece for The Times. “Now we’re racing to be last in some cases.”

One such destination is the Mer de Glace, the largest glacier in the French Alps, where thousands of people go for skiing every year. (Early tourists included Mary Shelley and Mark Twain.)

The glacier, like many others, is melting rapidly. A new, higher lift recently opened to stay closer to the retreating ice. And a study published last year in the journal Science found that about half of the world’s glaciers will have melted at the end of this centuryeven if countries adhere to the goals of the Paris climate agreement.

“For someone who doesn’t know what it was like in the past, it’s a beautiful scene,” a visitor to the glacier told Paige. “But when you know the difference, it’s really sad.”

There is some evidence that visiting an ecosystem threatened by climate change can make people more aware of their impact on the environment.

In a 2020 survey conducted by researchers at the Mer de Glace, 80 percent of visitors said they would try to learn more about how to protect the environment, and 77 percent said they would reduce their water and energy use.

Some tourist spots have focused on education. In Peru, officials have renamed the Pastoruri Glacier trek “La Ruta del Cambio Climático‘, or ‘The route of climate change’. And in the Mer de Glace, an exhibition about climate change – called the Glaciorium – will open later this year.

However, there are those who doubt the value of last-chance tourism. Visiting vulnerable environments can do more harm than good.

Some people travel to Antarctica because they fear it will be destroyed. But like Sara Clemence highlighted last year in a piece in The AtlanticTraveling there requires a lot of fuel, while visitors can introduce diseases and harm wildlife. And research by University of Waterloo academic Karla Boluk found that the majority of last-chance tourists to two locations in Canada were unwilling to pay extra to offset the carbon footprint of their trip.

“There is an ethical paradox of last-chance tourism,” Boluk told The Times, “and it is about the moral question of whether travelers recognize and respond to the harm they cause.”

Should Michigan’s protest vote worry Biden?

Yes. That 100,000 Michigan voters expressed dissatisfaction with Biden, many over his handling of Israel’s invasion of Gaza, is a problem for him. “The Biden campaign must deal with how the president’s policies could impact his reelection efforts,” USA Today’s Sara Pequeño writes.

No. There are more moderates who agree with Biden’s policies than progressives who disagree with him. “It would be a mistake to think that shifting his policies to the left would be a net gain for him.” John Halpin writes for CNN.

The AI industry continues to flourish and address our concerns. In late 2022, I spoke with pioneering researcher Yejin Choi, who is working on developing common sense and ethical reasoning in AI

Can you explain what “common sense” means in the context of teaching AI?

It is the unspoken, tacit knowledge that you and I have. It is so obvious that we often don’t talk about it. You and I know that birds can fly, and we know that penguins generally cannot. So AI researchers thought, we can code this: Birds usually fly, except penguins. But in fact, newborn baby birds cannot fly, and birds covered with oil cannot fly. The point is that exceptions are not exceptional, and you and I can think of them even if no one told us. It’s not that simple for AI

What do you find most exciting about your work in AI right now?

I am enthusiastic about value pluralism. Another way to put it is that there is no universal truth. Many people feel uncomfortable about this. As scientists we are trained to be very precise and to strive for one truth. Now I think: there is no universal truth: can birds fly or not? Moral rules: There must be a moral truth. For example, don’t kill people. But what if it’s a mercy killing? Than what?

How can you ever teach AI to make moral decisions if almost every rule or truth has exceptions?

AI should learn exactly that: there are cases that are clearer, and there are cases that are more discretionary. Instead of making binary, one-size-fits-all decisions, it should sometimes make decisions based on This looks really bad. Or you have your point of view, but you understand that half the country thinks differently.
