A Seattle landlord was forced to take matters into his own hands and confront a squatter he claims owes $80,000 in rent and refuses to leave his $2 million home.

Jaskaran Singh rented his five-bedroom home on 123rd Avenue near Seattle, Washington, to the man’s family in the summer of 2022.

He received the first and last month’s rent, but said the tenant then stopped paying, leaving him $80,000 out of pocket.

Singh filed for eviction, but after the tenant was granted an extension with a court date set for April 5, Singh took matters into his own hands, confronted the tenant and organized a protest with 200 people outside the house.

Singh said KOMO news: ‘I suffered a loss of $80,000. This should stop. This is a fight against injustice.’

The moment Singh confronted the tenant was captured on camera.

During the protest, Singh walked to the front of the 1,900-square-foot home and knocked on the door.

The tenant, whose name is not known, opened the door and came out.

Singh said, “You haven’t paid the rent for the last year.”

The tenant tried to go back to the house, but Singh said, “Wait, I need to talk… You haven’t paid the rent for six months. This is my house.’

The tenant then walked back into the home and closed the door.

Singh told KOMO News: “He is not willing to pay. He’s basically exploiting the system.”

Singh filed eviction proceedings when the tenant first began missing payments, but the Housing Justice Project (HJP) intervened on behalf of the tenant, seeking a stay of the eviction and paying a portion of the back rent.

The HJP even paid a three-month advance on the rent, so that the family had time to move.

But when the three months were up in May 2023, Singh said the family still didn’t move out and they started missing rent payments again.

Singh told KOMO News: “He never paid rent after May 2023 of last year, so it’s been almost eleven months now.”

The tenant reportedly claims to have lost his job during the pandemic and has been unable to find work as a consultant in the medical field.

But Singh’s lawyer, Stephen Freeborn, told them KOMO news: ‘That man can’t pay his rent, but he has two brand new cars parked in the driveway.’

Singh and his lawyer staged a protest outside the house on Saturday, attended by around 200 people, holding banners and chanting ‘No pay, no stay’.

Seattle-based journalist Jonathan Choe filmed the protest.

Kory Hahn, vice chair of the King County Republican Party, led a “Go Away, Crook!” shouted in Korean and said, “If you’re not going to pay, you shouldn’t stay there.”

Police had to intervene when some protesters banged on the door of the house.

Freeborn told KOMO News: ‘I was there and I thank them for coming. Not only was it a community gathering, but there were people from as far away as Tacoma, Olympia.

“We had representatives from the Democratic and Republican parties and I was surprised and happy to see it because this shouldn’t be a partisan issue. This should be a bipartisan issue because it affects everyone.

“I’m glad that this kind of thing (the protest) is starting to happen because they’re afraid no one is listening. Nobody listens to them.

“These landlords are dying on the vine, which is bad for the economy.”

According to KOMO News, the tenant has been granted a temporary restraining order against the Singh.

Barnaby Joyce has blamed mixing prescription drugs with alcohol after an embarrassing video showed him lying on his back near a gutter and mumbling profanities into his phone.

Daily Mail Australia unveiled exclusive video last Wednesday of the former deputy prime minister, 56, sprawled on the footpath on Lonsdale Street, in the Canberra suburb of Braddon.

Sources said the Nationals frontbencher was sitting on a large potted plant while having an animated phone conversation with his wife, Vikki Campion, when he fell off, 'rolled on the floor' and continued with his phone call.

Mr Joyce was forced to address the night out during an appearance at Sunrise with Natalie Barr.

“How are you,” Barr asked awkwardly.

Mr Joyce replied: “Look, I clearly made a big mistake. There's no excuse for it.

'There's a reason. And it was a very eventful walk home, wasn't it?

'I'm taking a prescription drug and they say certain things can happen to you if you drink [on it], and they were absolutely 100 percent right. They did that.'

Barr continued to ask Mr. Joyce, “So you mixed alcohol with prescription drugs, and this is what happened?”

Joyce replied, “That's exactly what I said, yes.”

Barr then asked, “Are you a little upset that you were on the ground and someone filmed you and no one helped you?”

Joyce said, “Well, that's a question for them, you know. For me, the Good Samaritan was the… was the Indian taxi driver who stopped as I was walking home and said, 'Do you need a lift, mate?', which obviously I did.”

'Do you need support with this?' Barr asked Mr. Joyce.

“Well, look… I'm not looking for sympathy and I'm not looking for an excuse,” he said.

'I'll just stick with that. What I said is what I said. I came back, sat on a planter, fell off and was videotaped. There you go. What else can you say?'

Barr suggested that if something similar happened to a company director “and they were right there and under the influence of alcohol, they could be reprimanded.”

“Do you think you should be? That's being discussed this morning,' she asked.

Mr Joyce said this was 'not really my decision'. “I'm not going to get into a long dialogue about what other people might want to do,” he said.

Nationals leader David Littleproud said Joyce would “get the support” he needed, while Labor Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek declined to comment.

“I won't add anything to it,” she told reporters.

“It's a matter for Barnaby, his family and his company to resolve.”

Mr Joyce's admission comes after his father-in-law revealed he had received a devastating message shortly before the incident.

“He had some really bad family news that day,” Peter Campion told Daily Mail Australia on Saturday.

'He has already lost a brother to cancer. That's where you should start. He had very bad similar news, which is not for me to reveal, but of the same magnitude, and it affected him deeply.

'As my daughter said, he was in a very, very bad situation and deeply depressed.

'Any decent human being who came across someone in that position, who was so sad that they collapsed on the footpath, would stop and help, not just make a video clip and sell it to the media.

“The biggest part of this story wasn't Barnaby being an emotional wreck on the sidewalk. It is the lack of caring from his countrymen, his fellow Australians.”

'What have we conveyed that people will do that? Walk past a man who clearly needs help.”

Meanwhile, a fake plaque has appeared at the spot where Mr Joyce fell last Wednesday evening.

The artist was in such a hurry that they got the date wrong and said it happened in January and not February.

A local who saw it told Daily Mail Australia: 'It's pretty hilarious. Everyone stops and laughs.

“It's glued down, so it's going to be there for a while.”

Nat Barr has confronted Lidia Thorpe as her uncle sets up an indefinite camp in a public park and refuses to leave until the government hands it back to the Aboriginal people.

Robbie Thorpe established 'Camp Sovereignty' at Kings Domain in Melbourne on Tuesday, saying the park is sovereign land that has not been ceded.

Mr Thorpe is joined by others who say they will stay there 'forever', or at least until the large park, 1km south of the city's CBD, is returned to the people of the Kulin Nation.

The Kings Domain Resting Place is the burial place for 38 Aboriginal people, and Mr Thorpe held a similar demonstration there for 60 days in 2006.

This follows the recent return of a park in Melbourne's north to traditional owners and a $100 million claim for Sydney's Balmoral Beach.

Senator Thorpe has voiced her support for her uncle's land claim and was confronted by Sunrise presenter Natalie Barr on Thursday morning.

“It's an incredibly complex issue that people have a hard time understanding,” Barr said.

“Today people are watching and saying, 'I can't be held responsible for what happened in the past. Do you understand that? What do you say to them?'

Senator Thorpe hit back with some damning statistics about the impact of colonization on Aboriginal people and its Aussie demands.

“We were 100 percent of the population in the country before colonization and boats came,” she said.

'We are the most imprisoned; 23,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children have been taken from their families, and the list goes on.

“We are the most incarcerated women in the world; Aboriginal women, at just 3 percent. That's a lot of women. So we want peace. We want unity. We would like a treaty that is about a peace agreement.

'And I understand there is fear. But don't listen to the politicians who create this fear. Listen to those who want to unite the country and get started. So we can be proud of where we live and who we are as a nation.”

Senator Thorpe also spoke about the divisive state of the nation following the referendum, saying Camp Sovereignty was a peaceful gathering open to all Australians.

“The sit-in at Kings Domain, or Camp Sovereignty, is a peaceful gathering. “Everyone is welcome to come down, participate in the truth-telling, share stories around the fire, and contribute to the healing of our country from the grassroots,” she said.

“This is an opportunity for ordinary Australians to join the conversation about treaty and peace, moving away from the divisions seen every January 26,” she explained.

Barr's cohost, Matt “Shirvo” Shirvington, then asked the senator if the sit-in in the park was the best way to address the problem.

“Robbie's done this before,” Shirvo explained. 'In 2006 he did it for 60 days. Basically, he makes it his life's work, right? He won't leave until a solution is found. Was he forced to do this? Is this the best way to do this?'

'And I understand there is fear. But don't listen to the politicians who create this fear. They got it wrong in the referendum. They were told not to have it.

“So I think it's up to the people now to start these conversations at the local level so that we can show these politicians how we can have a united nation here, so that we can come together and live together.

“It's not about taking people's backyards. It's not about taking anything away from the ordinary Australian. It's about improving your life by understanding the country you live in.

'Understanding the true stories. I mean, what they now call Kings Domain has been a gathering place for thousands of generations. We want to make it a meeting place for everyone again.'

Indigenous activists hope to build a stone house there as a cultural interpretation center while removing all traces of the 'Windsor crime family'.

They plan to rename the park “Yalukit Willam,” its traditional name, and hold ceremonies for education and healing at the cultural interpretation center.

Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance, the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and the area around the Royal Botanic Gardens are all within Kings Domain.

Mr Thorpe said if his group doesn't 'win' they will be left with nothing.

He said he is trying to work with the City of Melbourne to help promote an 'Aboriginal culture close to the CBD'.

Police have visited the camp several times and Mr Thorpe has so far complied with requests to remove tents and marquees from the space.

Camp Sovereignty organizers held a meeting with council members Wednesday morning to map out a path forward for their protest.

Greens MP Tim Read also visited the camp on Wednesday to talk to Thorpe about his ambitions and to call on others to get involved.

Sunrise presenter Natalie Barr has accused the Woolworths chief executive of trying to make a political statement about Australia Day, prompting the supermarket boss to insist he is not trying to 'cancel' the national holiday.

The supermarket giant shocked customers earlier this month when it announced it would not stock any products on January 26 due to declining demand and daytime sensitivities.

In response to the public backlash, the retailer has since taken out full-page newspaper advertisements with a letter written by its boss emphasizing that the retailer is not anti-Australia Day.

“We are not trying to 'cancel' Australia Day, but Woolworths is deeply proud of our place in providing the fresh food that brings Australians together every day,” wrote Woolworths CEO Brad Banducci.

The South African-born CEO faced a backlash from Barr when he appeared on Sunrise on Wednesday morning.

“Is it ultimately your role to tell Australians what they can and cannot buy?” she asked.

In his response, Mr Banducci took a swipe at rival retailers who had rejected Woolworth's move.

'The great thing about retailers is that we all make different decisions about what we want to stock. They made their decision and we made ours,” he said.

'We are focused on providing great value for everyday needs so you can mark the occasion and celebrate the Australia Day long weekend with friends and family. That is our focus.'

Barr asked if there was more to the decision, which Mr Banducci denied, insisting the decision was a commercial rather than political one.

“It's more than that, on this subject, isn't it? Does it make a political statement by not stocking Australia Day merchandise?” Barr asked.

Mr. Banducci hit back: “I don't think that's true.

'We focus on what we are good at, which is food and daily needs.

“There are pressures on Australian families and affordability, so we are focusing on what we do best, which is that.”

Barr also grilled Mr. Banducci about the newspaper ads, and why the supermarket felt the need to do so.

“It doesn't sound like it went well,” she said.

Mr Banducci defended the ads, but admitted that communication with shoppers could have been much better.

'It didn't go badly. It is a decision we made together as a team,” he explained.

'But I do worry that people who feel frustrated, who may not fully understand our message, risk taking the frustration out of hard-working staff.'

'I thought it was important to reiterate our position.

“We didn't say it as clearly as we should have in the beginning. That's the problem with Australia Day.'

“If nothing else comes from this, the clear message is: treat our team with the respect they deserve.”

Mr Banducci added that Australia Day merchandise sales have declined in recent years.

“That space in our store has gotten smaller,” he said.

“I'm a very grateful first-generation Aussie and I'm going to celebrate the classic way, which is at a barbecue with friends and family,” he told Barr.

Earlier on the Today Show, Mr. Banducci dodged an important question from host Karl Stefanovic.

“So you're not anti-Australia as a company today?” Stefanović asked.

“Karl, we are a very proud Australian company. We have been around for 100 years. We have 178,000 hardworking team members who will be in store on Australia Day to do good for our customers, and we are passionate about this country,” said Mr Banducci.

“But you're not anti Australia Day?” Stefanovic asked again.

Mr Banducci hit back, saying it “means different things to everyone” and supermarket management is backing Australians to commemorate the day in whatever way they can.

“You must seriously regret this?” Karl dug into it.

“I think we obviously could have explained our decision better, that's why I'm here,” Mr. Banducci responded.

'I am concerned about the impact this has on our team. They are proud, hard-working Australians, and it is fundamentally unfair to see them as anti-Australian or woke.”

Liberal Senator Matt Canavan spoke out in response to the Woolworths boss' comments later in the show.

“Brad is a man under pressure, Woolworths is under pressure and I want to thank all Australians for standing up to these unelected corporate elites who think they can dictate what should happen in this country,” he said.

Senator Canavan believes the retail giant is 'clearly trying to make a political statement' about Australia Day.

Ukrainian dwarf Natalia Grace has come face to face with her father, who accused her of being a ‘sociopath’ for pretending to be a child, as cameras captured the tense exchange between the two.

Their meeting was captured in the latest ID documentary ‘Natalia Speaks’, which highlights the latest developments in the case.

Michael Barnett and his wife Kristine alleged that Natalia Grace had lied about being a six-year-old Ukrainian orphan with a rare genetic condition that had taken over the family. Instead, they say she was a murderous adult who wants to harm them and their children.

Natalia and Michael sat a few feet apart as Natalia Grace Barnett angrily refuted Michael’s claimsincluding her once towering over the couple as they slept while holding a knife.

“I’ve never been in your room with a knife,” an annoyed Natalia Grace tells Barnett as she puts her head in her hands.

“I know what I saw,” Michael replied.

The confrontation will be featured in a six-part docuseries titled Natalia Speaks, debuting January 1 at 9/8c on ID.

“This is my side of the story,” Natalia said of the series, adding, “Do I look like a monster to you?

She also promises to address some of the wild accusations that have been made against her, including that she tried to kill her adoptive family.

“In every lie there is a hidden truth, but you have to dig enough to see it,” she added. “They can’t get away with this.”

Natalia Gracie also says she has “lost her youth” after the Barnetts asked a judge to change her legal age to 22.

The new documentary will feature never-before-seen evidence and footage, as well as new theories and testimonies from a range of voices, including the retired FBI agents who initially investigated Natalia’s case, genetic experts who are helping determine Natalia’s true age , and the Tippecanoe County Deputy District Attorney. Jackie Starbuck who prosecuted Barnett at his trial in October 2022.

The Barnetts were taken into custody in 2019 on charges of child neglect after leaving Natalia in an Indiana apartment while they moved to Canada after changing ages.

Michael was acquitted of the charges in October, while Kristine’s case was dismissed in March, just three weeks before her trial.

Cynthia Mans, Natalia’s new adoptive mother, claims Michael “grinned” at her when he was found not guilty.

“It was as if I saw my daughter being raped,” Mans says in the documentary. “No justice was served. If I could have caught Kristine in an alley and put on a black hoodie, I would have knocked her upside the head.”

The story of Natalia’s adoption has generated worldwide headlines in recent years amid the documentary and the arrests of her former adoptive parents.

The married couple adopted Natalia in April 2010, believing they would be bringing home a six-year-old child.

But their dream adoption soon turned into a nightmare when they realized she might not be who she claimed, and they suspected she was a threatening adult pretending to be a child.

Just a year later, they left Natalia in an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana, as they fled north, claiming she had tried to kill them.

“She tried to poison and kill my wife,” Michael alleged. “(And) one night I opened my eyes and Natalia is standing at the foot of the bed with a knife in her hand.”

Kristine, who is accused in the bombshell documentary of abusing Natalia, told DailyMail.com in 2019 that her family was terrorized by the Ukrainians in the months after they adopted her.

She claimed Natalia threatened to stab the family in their sleep, pushed her towards an electric fence and poured bleach into her coffee.

“She made statements and drew pictures saying she wanted to kill family members, roll them up in a blanket and put them in the backyard,” she told DailyMailTV.

‘She was standing over people in the middle of the night. You couldn’t go to sleep. We had to hide all sharp objects.

“I saw her putting chemicals, bleach, Windex, something, in my coffee and I asked her, ‘What are you doing?’ She said, “I’m trying to poison you.”

“The media is portraying me as a child molester, but there is no child here,” Barnett said.

However, Natalia branded her former adoptive parents as ‘liars’ and claimed they had tried to make her out to be a ‘crazy’.

For their part, the Barnetts said they began to suspect their new daughter might be older than her years on one of the first nights they spent together.

They described an incident in which Kristine let out a blood-curdling scream while bathing the girl they thought was only six, when she noticed she had “full pubic hair.”

In the months that followed, the couple claimed there was “a lot of escalation.” This included discovering that she had been hiding her period from them for months.

On another occasion, when Natalia met another six-year-old with a rare bone condition called spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, the stark difference in age became seemingly indisputable.

Natalia, who did not speak with a Ukrainian accent, towered over her playmate, even though her bone structure and vocabulary were much more advanced.

The incidents led to them taking Natalia to a psychiatrist, who, according to the couple, diagnosed her as a “sociopath.”

The numerous warning signs prompted the family to seek a lawyer, and in 2012 a family petition in probate court was granted and a judge legally changed her date of birth from 2003 to 1989 on her Ukrainian birth certificate.

After the couple granted their petition, they decided to move her into the apartment in Lafayette – three provinces away from where they lived – while they moved to Canada.

Later in court, Natalia would testify that she mostly indulged in peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, Ramen noodles, and the occasional pizza. She said she had limited use of her hands and arms and had difficulty opening canned food.

Sunrise presenter Natalie Barr has confronted the Albanian government after three murderers and a number of sex offenders were released into the community following a landmark Supreme Court ruling.

“Until now, the political debate has focused on who to blame, rather than on solving it,” Barr said before a tense interview with Interior Secretary Clare O’Neil.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said the Prime Minister should cancel his planned overseas trip to San Francisco to introduce new legislation to put the 81 asylum seekers back behind bars.

Albanese’s presence at the APEC summit has been in the works for months, but the opposition leader said he ‘do whatever it takes to put these people back in custody where they belong’ and that parliament ‘should not stand up before the government brings forward legislation.

“We will sit down with the government, we will sit extra hours all night,” he said on Wednesday.

Mr Dutton describes those released by the ruling as “hardcore criminals”.

The Supreme Court’s decision was out of the hands of the government and was fiercely opposed by Mr Albanese and his ministers.

As a result, 81 asylum seekers held in indefinite detention – who were deemed too dangerous to walk the streets and who could not be deported to any other country – have been released.

“Clare, a pedophile who raped a ten year old boy, a hit man who murdered a pregnant woman, do we know where they are?” Barr asked.

O’Neil responded, saying, “Nat, let me just say before I answer your question: those crimes and those people are absolutely despicable.

“I’m raising three children in this country and I can tell you that if I had anything in my power to keep these people in prison, I absolutely would.

“Yes, we know where those people are.”

Ms O’Neil said the government was releasing people under “the strictest possible visa conditions”.

This includes informing authorities of their location, personal daily reporting and restrictions on working in certain types of industries.

“It means we’re constantly monitoring things like social media and email addresses and phone numbers and things like that,” she said.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said the government is focused on keeping Australians safe and had opposed the High Court’s decision.

“I remind Australians that we protested this in the High Court,” Mr Marles told Sunrise on Wednesday.

‘This is not our decision. But according to the Supreme Court’s decision, these people have been released.

‘They have been given a bridging visa with the strictest possible conditions. That was something the government did immediately.

“We continue to assess what options we have here, including potential legislative responses, and we will work on that very quickly.”

Mr. Marles noted that the Supreme Court has not yet issued a full ruling, making the “situation more difficult.”

However, he explained that the government will impose the “strictest” conditions on those released to ensure the safety of the community.

“It’s clear that the difficulty of the situation is much greater now that these people have been released, and again, this is not what we wanted,” Mr Marles said.

‘These people have been given the strictest possible conditions and we want to make sure that the steps we take are legally robust and sustainable.

“But what the community needs to understand is first and foremost our main criteria, our main focus is the safety of the community.”

But opposition senator Jane Hume argued that courts “always” make decisions that overturn or overrule government decisions.

The government had taken its eye off the ball because they knew the court ruling was coming and they were not prepared, she said.

“Now we have 80 very dangerous, potentially offenders in the community,” she said.

“They knew there would be a Supreme Court ruling, but no legislative or regulatory response is ready yet.”

Ms O’Neil said Senator Hume’s reasoning was “nonsense”.

“The idea that the Australian government can simply override a High Court decision through legislation is not the way our Constitution works,” she said.

The Australian Federal Police Commissioner has informed his state and territory counterparts of the decision, and a joint operation has been set up with the Australian Border Force to coordinate their release.

When asked why the government does not have a legislative or regulatory framework to address the issue, Labor Minister Anika Wells said the Supreme Court has not yet announced the reasons for its decision.

“So to capture this and ensure this doesn’t happen again, we need to know the reason before we draft any legislative or regulatory measure for the House,” she told Nine’s Today show.

Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has said the government has sought advance advice on its options depending on the different outcomes of the court ruling, and continues to look at “all regulatory and legislative options”.
