Ranchi: Dhruv Jurel celebrated his maiden Test fifty with an army salute on Sunday on Day 3 of the ongoing fourth Test against England. Coming into the middle when half the side were behind within 200 runs, Jurel stood tall at one end and ensured the hosts crossed the 300-run mark in response to England’s first innings total of 353 . In the end, India were all out for 307 with Jurel being the last man out for 90.
Jurel, who made his debut in the third Test match, missed a half-century by four runs in Rajkot.

After his maiden Test fifty in Ranchi, Jurel dedicated his knock to his father, a Kargil war veteran, with a salute, the video of which went viral on social media.

San Francisco dedicates a cable car to Tony Bennett

Cable Car No. 53 made a special Valentine's Day ride to San Francisco's Nob Hill on Wednesday morning, including a stop outside the Fairmont Hotel, where the car was officially dedicated to singer Tony Bennett, who died in July at age 96.

It was at that hotel – in the Venetian Room, in 1961 – that Bennett first publicly performed his signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” with lyrics about cable cars climbing halfway up the stars. The tune still inspires pride and nostalgia in many San Franciscans, and the Giants play it after every home victory.

The dedication, attended by Susan Benedetto, Bennett's widow, added to a recent string of positive news about the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, which operates the city's buses, streetcars and light rail lines.

Not long ago, the agency's director, Jeffrey Tumlin, worried it was heading toward a “budget cliff,” when money would run out and major cuts to services would have to be made.

But like a cable car climbing the steep California Street, the agency's fortunes are slowly rising.

The system now has 71 percent of the ridership it had before the pandemic, Tumlin said, which is quite high compared to other public transit agencies in the Bay Area. The figure for weekend drivers is even better, at 86 percent. Some bus routes have more riders than ever before, and Tumlin said the system's three historic cable car routes, beloved by tourists, were once again quite full.

“The cable cars are booming,” he said. “Everyone who visits San Francisco apparently gets on our cable cars.”

Tumlin said the agency has worked hard during the pandemic to make the Muni system “fast, frequent, reliable, clean and safe” — and it appears to be paying off.

The biggest key to Muni's recovery is adapting routes to serve a variety of neighborhoods and destinations, rather than relying primarily on downtown office workers, many of whom now work from home. Routes that pass hospitals or the Chase Center, where the Warriors play, are doing well.

The agency has built 25 miles of transit lanes to speed up bus service. The line that runs along Van Ness Avenue past City Hall now moves so fast that people engrossed in their phones often miss their stops and complain that the bus is too fast, Tumlin said.

The agency has given up strict schedules for its buses and switched to a system called headway management, which focuses on the time interval between buses and gives drivers more flexibility to avoid bunching up along the route.

Of course, it's not all rosy. The subway lines that run on fixed rails to the Financial District and Moscone Center are struggling without office workers and conventioneers to fill them.

The situation for BART, the rail system that connects the city to much of the Bay Area, is much more dire. As downtown continues to struggle to recover, so does BART: It has regained just 43 percent of its pre-pandemic attendance.

“Our ridership reflects office occupancy,” said Alicia Trost, BART spokeswoman. “It's that simple.”

BART continues to face a very real budget cliff. A windfall of additional state money last year postponed that scary scenario until 2026, but if a ballot measure expected to go before voters that year doesn't pass, the agency will be in real trouble, Trost said. The agency, with an annual operating budget of about $1 billion, will be short about $300 million in 2026 without a cash injection.

Bus agencies in the Bay Area generally do quite well. SamTrans in San Mateo County is back to 88 percent of its pre-pandemic ridership. Fixed rail services that serve mostly downtown commuters are not: Caltrain, which runs between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, has regained just 38 percent of its ridership.

Still, the mood Wednesday morning when it came to public transportation in the San Francisco area was pure happiness. Mayor London Breed; Larry Baer, the president of the San Francisco Giants; and other notables celebrated Bennett's life and the newly dedicated cable car. Benedetto said she wished her husband could have seen it.

“He would have been absolutely thrilled,” she said. “He loved the people of San Francisco, and they loved him.”

The Dancing On Ice star, 44, shared the heartbreaking news that ‘her hero’ Jackie had died on 4 January followed by a funeral last week on Instagram following her ’emotional’ performance on the ITV skating show earlier in the evening.

The Radio 1 presenter explained she didn’t want to share the news of her mother’s passing until after her performance on Dancing On Ice. She did not specify her cause of death, however Jackie has suffered ill health for many years.

Referencing the routine, Adele revealed her appearance on the ice was was dedicated to the memory of her late mother, while also explaining she was ‘overly emotional’ on air because of her recent heartbreak.

In touching pictures she posted, Adele showed Jackie her skating shoes and clips of herself performing on stage, while her Instagram page is packed with touching images on Jackie from both recent years and her childhood.

Adele was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in October 2021 and documented her treatment on social media, which included colostomy surgery to remove a bowel tumour and having a stoma bag fitted.

As well as being a huge fan of the series Adele said: ‘Another reason I wanted to do it as well is just more recently being able to reclaim my body after what it’s been through’.

‘I feel like it’s allowing me to take back who I am again’.

The former Radio 1 host also candidly discussed the precautions taken in order for her perform on the ice with her stoma.

‘Being new to the world of stomas, I didn’t really know what to expect.I’ve realised that Audrey – that’s what I call it – doesn’t like the ice’.

‘She’s very quiet. She’s been a joy, actually. I’ve noticed that because I’ve got a hole on the right side of my torso, I don’t have a centre where it used to be’.

Adele, who has been paired with pro Mark Hanretty, admitted she was having to ‘relearn’ how to use her body and said rotating her midriff was still quite difficult.

‘I’ve got to really, really think about my movement on the ice but it’s helped me connect with my body, so it’s been a blessing as well.

In 2022, Adele was filmed at home with her partner Kate who helped the star changed her stoma bag – a candid moment that was praised by viewers.

Adele revealed in an October 2021 Instagram post that she was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer, and later underwent colostomy surgery to remove a bowel tumour later that year.

After Kate changed her stoma bag, Adele told her girlfriend ‘I can’t believe I’ve been to the toilet in front of you,’ only for Kate to tell her ‘I don’t see it like that, explaining that she sees the stoma as a ‘separate entity…. it’s like we’re changing our baby.’

The end of the segment showed Adele thanking Kate for ‘accepting my new body’ from the very start of her cancer journey.

Sir Paul McCartney has allocated part of his National Portrait Gallery exhibition to ex-fiancée Jane Asher.

The former Beatle, 81, was unceremoniously dumped by the actress, now 77, on live TV in 1968 as he watched in shock from home.

However, time proves to be a wonderful healer and Paul has dedicated part of his new exhibition Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm to his former love and her family.

The mirror reports that the small area, called Home with the Ashers, shows black and white photos of the actress described as Paul’s “inspiration.”

Note that: ‘with Jane as inspiration…the results are more intimate and thoughtful than other images he shot at the time.’

The musician then lived with her family for three years and learned a lot from her music professor mother Margaret. And wrote classic hits I Want to Hold Your Hand, And I Love Her while staying at home.

As Paul muses, “The Asher family put me up in an attic room on the top floor, and I think this self-portrait was done in the mirror in that room. Not only did the Ashers give me a home away from home, but it was full of interesting people and conversation, and it was also a really good place to write.”

At the time, Jane was a star in her own right having risen to prominence as a young actress and panellist on BBC’s hugely popular and influential Juke Box Jury.

She ended the relationship with the pop superstar during her appearance on the chat show Dee Time, saying, “I didn’t break it up, but it’s over.”

Paul was later married to Eastman from 1969 until her death in 1998, with whom he shared four children.

He next married Heather Mills in 2002 and welcomed a daughter before their divorce in 2008, he later married businesswoman Nancy Shevell in 2011.

The 81-year-old icon took the photos during the early days of The Beatles, and Sir Paul offered them to the gallery – which has reopened to the public after three years of renovations – after she came across the photos in 2020.

Dr. Nicholas Cullinan, the gallery’s director, said: ‘The McCartney exhibition is very interesting.

“Actually, Sir Paul approached us, I think back in 2020, and said he found these photos that he remembered taking but thought were lost. And so we sat down with him and started going through the pictures and they are really extraordinary.’

Paul McCartney Photographs 1963-64: Eyes of the Storm runs from June 28 to October 1.

Nicholas added: “To see these unprecedented images, of such a well-documented, such a famous and important cultural moment…

“And the fact that they were made by someone who really, as the exhibition title implies, looked out into the eye of the storm to see what was happening.”
