SHOPPERS are rushing to buy Surf detergent from a major retailer claiming “you’ll never get it this cheap again”.

Asda has cut the price of Tropical Lily concentrated laundry detergent by 50%, from £3.50 to £1.75.

Asda has slashed the price of its Tropical Lily laundry detergent to £1.75

The retailer is selling it online and it appears it’s in stores too, although it’s not clear if it’s available in all stores.

It might be worth calling your local Asda branch to see if they have anything in stock for £1.75.

You won’t find it cheaper anywhere else anyway, at the next cheapest retailer, Tesco, which sells it for £2.95 to Clubcard customers.

After that it’s Waitrose selling it for £3.25, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s for £3.50 and then Iceland for £6.

Eagle-eyed shoppers have already started noticing the reduced detergent on Asda shelves, with customer numbers reportedly limited to three each.

Post to the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK groupsaid one shopper: “Asda has bottles of Surf detergent for £1.75 in Tropical Lilly.

“Ren, you’ll never get it this cheap again.”

The Facebook post has racked up more than 80 likes and received dozens of comments from shoppers eager to get their hands on the affordable detergent.

One said: “I have a few because it’s my favourite”, while another noted the “ridiculous” price and a third said it “smells so good”.

One customer said they weren’t thrilled with the detergent, but another customer quickly responded with “at that price, who cares.”

From Campbell’s soup to Caramac and Lilt: the iconic foods that are disappearing from supermarket shelves

Of course, don’t forget to always shop around when you buy something like this, because you might find it cheaper elsewhere.

For example, on websites such as Trolley and Price Spy you can compare prices of thousands of products.

Please note that both websites rely on the retailer’s online prices, which may differ from in-store prices.

It’s not the first time in recent months that shoppers have panicked after spotting a bargain on the shelves.

How to save on your supermarket shopping

There are plenty of ways to save money at your grocery store.

You can look for yellow or red stickers on products, which indicate when they are discounted.

If the food is fresh, eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.

Making a list should also save you money because you’ll be less likely to make hasty purchases when you go to the grocery store.

Choosing your own brand can be an easy way to save hundreds of dollars a year on your food bill, too.

This means ditching the ‘best’ or ‘luxury’ products and instead opting for ‘own’ or value-for-money lines.

Many supermarkets have shaky fruit and vegetable programs where you can get cheap prices if they are misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering 5kg boxes of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

If you’re on a low income and a parent, you could potentially get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers, which you can also use at the supermarket.

In addition, many municipalities offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.

Last month a B&M shopper found the ‘bargain of the year’ after spotting giant boxes of Easy washing powder for £1.40 each.

Tesco Clubcard shoppers also bought five packs of Cadbury Creme eggs on offer for £1.50, the cheapest we found them for.

Meanwhile, B&M customers were excited after seeing a new Cadbury Twirl flavor on shelves earlier this week for just 29p.

How to save money at Asda

Asda superfan Eilish Stout-Cairns previously shared with The Sun five money-saving tips you can use on your next trip.

Firstly, she said, it’s worth buying Asda’s budget Just Essentials range, which can save you hundreds of pounds a year.

You don’t just have to apply this tip in Asda either: ‘downshifting’, as Martin Lewis calls it, can save you money in all major supermarkets.

Asda shoppers should also sign up to the retailer’s Rewards programme, which rewards you with “pounds” when you spend in-store or online.

You can also get up to 10% cashback on so-called “Star Products”, which change regularly and are highlighted to you in the app.

In other Asda news, the retailer is opening hundreds of convenience stores across the UK as part of massive expansion plans.

Additionally, in January it unveiled 82 cashless locations, which was a blow to shoppers.

This article is part of Overlookeda series of obituaries about notable people whose deaths, beginning in 1851, were not reported in The Times.

Yvonne Barr was a 31-year-old research assistant looking for a new challenge when she was hired by a pathologist in London in 1963 to help find the cause of an unusual malignancy: exceptionally large facial tumors in Ugandan children.

Pathologist Anthony Epstein was almost certain that the tumors were caused by a virus, but he struggled to prove his hypothesis.

Barr was known by then for her superior laboratory skills, having worked on the bacterium that causes Hansen’s disease, commonly called leprosy, and other projects.

Although she had mastered cell culture techniques – essentially promoting the growth of cells under controlled conditions – Epstein had problems supporting the growth of cells in his laboratory.

“This was a key to the research: multiplying cells that can continue to grow and become experimental specimens,” says Gregory J. Morgan, author of “Hunters of cancer viruses: A history of tumor virology” (2022). “Yvonne Barr had experience producing and caring for cell cultures before she came to Epstein’s lab in 1963, and perhaps that’s why he hired her.”

Together they would make one of the most important scientific discoveries of the 20th century: the first virus to cause cancer in humans, which became known as the Epstein-Barr virus.

Epstein’s death last month was noted by news media around the world. But when Barr died in 2016, few newspapers reported it, most likely because shortly after discovering the virus in 1964, she transitioned to a quiet career in teaching, which she pursued for decades.

Barr had first sought research positions in Australia, where she had moved with her husband, but could not find any.

“Her case illustrates the pervasive sexism of mid-20th century biomedicine,” said Morgan, an associate professor of history and philosophy of science at the University of Washington. Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ “She found science in Australia to be a bit of a boys’ club and couldn’t get a permanent job.”

Yvonne Margaret Barr was born on March 11, 1932 in Carlow, Ireland, about an hour southwest of Dublin, the eldest of four children of Robert and Gertrude Barr. Her father was a bank manager.

She graduated from Banbridge Academy in Northern Ireland as Head Prefect, a position awarded to students who were designated as leaders and mentors. At Trinity College, Dublin she shone again, obtaining a degree in zoology and graduating with honors in 1953.

It was through jobs as a research assistant from 1955 to 1962 that she acquired her laboratory skills. At London’s National Institute for Medical Research, she worked on the bacterium that causes leprosy and learned the cell proliferation technique known as cell culture.

A second position, as a research assistant at the University of Toronto, provided another opportunity to hone laboratory skills in experiments with canine distemper virus, a pathogen that can cause a serious and often fatal infection in both dogs and other animals.

But while Barr mastered cell culture techniques, Epstein, who worked at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London, struggled with them, Morgan said.

In 1963, Epstein received a $45,000 research grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and hired Barr and Bert Achong, an expert in electron microscopy. Both would earn doctorates while working in Epstein’s laboratory.

Epstein was already working with Denis Burkitt, a surgeon and Presbyterian missionary in Uganda, who sent tissue samples to London from biopsied facial tumors affecting Ugandan children.

The cancer was known as Burkitt lymphoma, and because the tumors occurred in certain equatorial locations, Epstein strongly suspected a viral cause. What he needed was a more effective way to grow cells that might harbor the virus.

Barr’s techniques allowed the team to maintain clusters of cells. Their research was the first to use cell culture techniques to study human B cells, which are affected in Burkitt lymphoma, Morgan said.

In July 2022, The Irish Times quoted Barr explaining why she thought Epstein’s early efforts did not work. “By the time I arrived at the Middlesex I had a lot of experience with tissue culture,” she wrote in an undated recollection. “I had the feeling that Epstein was throwing away the good cells. I applied my methods and gave the cells a wash and new food every few days.’

A tumor sample from Burkitt that initially seemed doomed after fog at Heathrow Airport delayed delivery turned out to be the sample that contained definitive evidence of a causative virus.

“One day some of them glistened, and people thought that was a sign of life,” Barr, speaking from Australia, told a video conference in London in 2014. “There was great excitement, and it was about getting enough for electron microscopy.”

Achong captured a clear image of that cell cluster, and Epstein immediately recognized the clear signature of a herpes virus new to science. The perpetrator was found. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania confirmed the results.

“The virus is named after the cell culture in which it was found,” Morgan explains. “The cell cultures were labeled EB1, for Epstein Barr 1, EB2, EB3, etc.”

Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV, is also the cause of mononucleosis and is strongly associated with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It is estimated that 90 percent of the world’s adult population are carriers of the virus.

Barr received her PhD in 1966, a year after her marriage to Stuart Balding, an industrial chemist. After emigrating to Australia, they had two children, Kirsten and Sean Balding. She earned a teaching degree and became a high school math and science teacher. Her work in biomedical research had ended with the discovery in Epstein’s laboratory.

“She regarded the discovery as a small part of her life,” Kirsten Balding said in an interview. “I think she loved being a teacher and helping kids.”

Barr died on Feb. 13, 2016, in Melbourne after developing multiple medical problems, including diabetes and congestive heart failure, her daughter said. She was 83.

Located in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, the quaint town of Shirdi holds great importance in India’s spiritual landscape as the place where the mystic Sai Baba once resided around the end of the 19th century. Today, millions of people flock to the quiet town devotionally in search of blessings and miracles, or simply to immerse themselves in the powerful positive energy that still abounds wherever one wanders. Beyond the famous Shirdi Sai Pilgrim Temple lies a wealth of lesser-known but equally enchanting gems for soul abodes to discover.

1. Dwarkamai Mosque

Start your exploration by paying respects at the atmospheric Dwarkamai Mosque, the simple, dilapidated structure that Sai Baba once called home. This blessed place immerses visitors in deep silence, where even faint sounds seem to be amplified tenfold, from creaking pillars to whispering priests diligently tending the shrine lamps that glow constantly as symbols of Baba’s eternal presence.

Remove shoes as you step on cool stone floors said to have been trodden by the saint and his disciples more than nine decades ago. Inhale intensely fragrant tufts of incense smoke piously offered next to a central pedestal containing Baba’s grindstone and personal belongings, including worn kafni robes, tongs, a begging bowl and walking stick, evoking an extraordinary ascetic existence dedicated to alleviating suffering of humanity that is still so devotedly remembered.

Marvel at how the once crumbling walls still stand tall, as if divinely infused with powerful protective energy from the enlightened master whose miracles have saved this shrine from destruction more than five times throughout history. Continue to silently commune with the divine presence that is intensely saturated within these areas where Baba’s eternal spirit seems to subtly permeate from every stone and grain, immortalizing Shirdi’s extraordinary legacy that attracts millions of truth seekers around the world.

2. Chavadi Temple

A short walk from Dwarkamai along quiet village lanes lined with washing lines takes you to the astonishing Chavadi Temple, another extraordinary monument dedicated to Sai Baba’s memory. Originally an open hall between Dwarkamai and the village, Baba regularly slept here on alternate nights with accompanying devotees.

Since Baba’s mahasamadhi in 1918, the modest shelter has been transformed into a remarkable shrine that attracts thousands of faithful pilgrims. Step inside the inner sanctum whose soothing whitewashed walls seem to amplify the lingering energy as devotees meditate in silence on clean marble floors. Breathe in the sweet notes of champa incense offered ceaselessly in front of a central altar with Baba’s paduka sandals and surroundings believed to be imbued with extraordinary blessing powers by his divine touch.

Every morning and evening, festive processions begin with the carrying of Baba’s satka (royal sandal throne) between Dwarkamai and Chavadi, accompanied by instruments, chants and offerings made by attendees seeking favors and interventions from the eternally compassionate saint whose mystical presence still remains permeates every atom within Chavadi’s sublime spiritual body. aura.

3. Gurusthan Temple

Serious seekers who experience a growing inner urge for long-term contemplation are magnetically drawn to Gurusthan, located 2 kilometers from the main Sai Temple. This extraordinary place, set among tranquil woodlands, was once a favorite grove for Baba, who often retreated here during long vigils, sitting motionless through the branches and gazing at the glittering night sky.

Even today, the sacred site magically facilitates mental peace despite the background traffic just minutes away. Follow scenic forest trails on contemplative walks past whispering peepul trees and tranquil Buddhist rock domes shrouded in velvet green moss. Pause on worn stone chairs, inhabited by meditating Buddha figures, and let the surrounding silence work through confused thoughts. Here, observe how the mind gently unravels, as if each inhale brings clarity of perspective regarding the unimportant knots of life that previously aroused intense attachments.

As the chatter of the mind gradually disappears, you can see why Sai Baba found such profound silence and inspiration in these protected groves that now sacredly support seekers into similarly enlightened states of unified consciousness, far from material illusions and passing pains. Soon, even the whispering of dry leaves and coughing squirrels cannot distract from the inner joy that spontaneously wells up at the gift of being fully present in such extraordinary spiritual oases that are so abundant and yet somehow overlooked by many visitors who focus only on the visible and not on the subtly miraculous.

4. Shani Shinganapur Temple

Beyond the city of Shirdi lies the unique village of Shani Shinganapur, famous for extraordinary traditions of folk deities, mystical legends and an amazing peace that has reigned in the atmosphere since eras when crime ceased to exist without the need for security measures. Houses here have no doors or locks even today, but no thief dares to enter there. Such is the divine protection granted by the local guardian, Lord Shani Bhagwan.

Consecrated under the open sky, this self-manifested black swayambu rock idol attracts thousands of pilgrims seeking relief from saturnine karmic burdens or bad fate through the blessings of the deity. Watch as devotees transfer hot oil from head to toe, unflinchingly focused on prayers asking for goodwill or forgiveness for faults like greed, jealousy and anger. By the time they humbly bow and receive prasad sweets, invisible energetic shifts become visible as darkness recedes from radiant faces.

Beyond the profound experience of spirituality lies a deeper validation of faith’s extraordinary capacity to foster human goodness and communal unity that transcends divisions. Joyfully participate in vibrant nighttime worship ceremonies and then celebrate freely with several new friends, realizing that mysterious yet graceful deities still abundantly breathe new hope and harmony into troubled lives for those who arrive with open hearts.

5. Kalaram Temple

After all, no spiritual sojourn ever seems completely complete without giving up burdens and exuding sincere gratitude for the blessings that bestow one more precious day on this beautiful realm we call existence. Just 3 kilometers from Chavadi, in the village area of Panchvati, lies the modest Kalaram Temple dedicated to Rama, beloved for restoring peace, justice and prosperity to his subjects by embodying the highest noble principles.

In the modest courtyard, resonating with Vedic mantras and devotees sitting in silent meditation, darshan of Lord Rama comes benevolently smiling beside divine consort Sita, sheltered by brother Lakshman and venerable teacher Hanuman who interceded for us when hope died and radiates eternal power which protects devotees who transgress through turbulent forests that symbolize worldly suffering.

Make heartfelt sacrifices or simply bow with vulnerability and authenticity, briefly exposing fears or frustrations. Immediately feel comforting grace as the divine embodiment amplifies boundless compassion, wisdom, and loving protection for weary souls who dare to ask openly.

By the time one leaves these humble yet deeply charged spiritual portals in Shirdi, realize that miracles of healing, faith revival and new found purpose still occur in abundance when we shut out the material noise for a little while and tune in to the omnipresent cosmic forces that were magnificently supportive once we glimpsed them just beneath the surface. …

Sanctuary for the soul

What turns simple sights into deeply moving personal journeys are sojourns that reveal what unexpected treasures lie just beneath the surface of society when we block out external noise long enough to intuitively go deeper.

In holy Shirdi dwells an extraordinary sanctuary where stressed urban minds gently unravel like knotted yarns beside tranquil forest groves once trodden by enlightened bare feet eternally blessed in sacred ground. Here, rigid skepticism organically surrenders to profound possibilities, while loud inner demons dissolve sweetly into silence, sitting in stone temples imbued with protective presence since eras predating the swirling madness of the 21st century.

Outside, familiar fears wait like caged tigers, ready to reclaim vulnerable energies in fear and attachment. But now, armed with new spiritual insights from mystical lands that still pulse with divine vibrations, fueled by humble shrines and wrinkled smiles, we realize once again that grace still exists in abundance for those brave enough to temporarily withdraw from neglected highways to these timeless magical forest refuges. off the beaten track where soul and sanity wait patiently to be revived.

So before fast trajectories take us far from the sacred, we should take a little longer to connect with the cosmic and give thanks for the extraordinary privilege of simply being present in such powerfully charged sanctuaries lovingly sculpted by ancient craftsmen, so we can remember how to fly. rise nobly again from earthly swamps… if we dare to let divinity take control of this breathtaking mysterious ride, even if only for a short time, to crystallize a deep belief in indestructible spiritual powers that always lie in silence support to give another beautiful sunrise.

Agile monkeys may harass you on the short uphill trek past golden temple bells and fragrant deodar forest. But sob out loud when the towering effigy emerges dramatically from the pine mist as you walk around the pedestal decorated with sacred symbols and flickering diyas offered by pilgrims. A team of 21 scientists set out on an expedition in February into the largely uncharted waters of Bounty Trough off the coast of New Zealand’s South Island, hoping to find a wealth of new species.

They said the expedition paid off Sunday with the discovery of 100 new species, a number likely to increase, said Alex Rogers, a marine biologist who led the expedition.

“I expect this number to increase as we run more and more samples,” said Dr. Rogers. “I think that number will be in the hundreds instead of just 100.”

Dozens of mollusks, three fish, a shrimp and a cephalopod, a type of predatory mollusk, were among the new species found during the expedition, which was led by Ocean Census, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the global discovery of life in the Ocean, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research in New Zealand, and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

One creature that caused “a lot of head scratching” is a star-shaped animal about a centimeter across, but researchers have been unable to identify it, said Dr. Rogers. They think it might be a coral.

It is estimated that more than two million species live in the oceans, but only 10 percent of ocean life is known. Learning about aquatic life is crucial because marine ecosystems perform functions that support life on Earth, such as creating food for billions, storing carbon and regulating the climate, said Dr. Rogers.

“We are dealing with a situation where we know marine life is in decline,” he said. “To try to control human activities and prevent this continued decline, we need to understand the distribution of marine life better than we currently do.”

Ocean Census was founded last year by the Nippon Foundation, a Japanese philanthropic organization, and British-based ocean exploration foundation Nekton. When it started its work, Ocean Census set a goal of at least making finds 100,000 new marine species in a decade.

The group focuses on exploring some of the most under-sampled water bodies.

During the February expedition, researchers first mapped the area with an imaging system and video cameras to check whether it would be safe for their equipment and to ensure there were no vulnerable animal communities that could potentially be harmed.

They then deployed what is known as the Brenke sled, a sampling device with two nets, one close to the seabed and the other one meter above it. As it drags along the bottom, it churns around animals that live close to the seabed. To find larger animals, the researchers used other methods, such as baited nets.

Trawling the depths at 4,800 meters – or about the equivalent of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps – researchers collected 1,791 samples.

Given its depth, Bounty Trough is not of great importance to the fishery and is therefore poorly sampled, said Dr. Rogers. Geologists have done research this area but not biologists.

About 240,000 marine species have been discovered and named worldwide to date, but according to Ocean Census, an average of only 2,200 species are discovered each year.

In many water bodies, scientists still have much to learn, said Dr. Rogers.

“It’s probably the equivalent of a space mission,” he said. “We’re still in the early stages, but the number of species we’ve found in the Bounty Trough really tells us we still have a long way to go when it comes to understanding where to find life in the ocean is.”

GOOGLE has unveiled its latest update for Pixel users, offering a big boost to photo quality.

The company believes that this trio of new features will “make your Pixel devices even more integrated into your daily life.”

1

If you can’t answer your screened call right away, Google Assistant will tell the caller to wait a little longer while they try to reach youCredit: Google

The first update concerns an already existing feature known as Call Screen which can now help initiate a call when the caller is silent.

It sounds like a good remedy for useless ringing or annoying cold calls, and gives users a ‘hello’ chip if a caller doesn’t respond.

All users have to do is tap the button while screening a call, and Google Assistant will prompt the caller to speak so you understand why they’re trying to reach you.

And soon, Circle to Search will be available on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, so you can get more information through Search without having to switch apps.

Googling

If you can’t answer your screened call right away, Google Assistant will tell the caller to wait a little longer while they try to reach you.

Next up is improved image and video quality on third-party apps like Instagram and Facebook.

Previously, the quality of images and clips were reduced to a size that was easier for social media platforms to handle.

But now Pixel owners can post in the same quality in which they captured the photo or footage, such as HDR photos and 10-bit HDR videos.

Then there’s the boost for information-hungry Pixel owners.

“We recently announced Circle to Search, a new way to search anything on select Android phones, including Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro,” Google wrote in a blog post.

“And soon, Circle to Search will be available on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, so you can get more information from Search without switching apps.”

Samsung snubs Apple fans by making new gadget only compatible with Android devices

To use this feature, Pixel customers simply long-press the Pixel home button or navigation bar and circle, scribble, highlight, or tap an image, text, or video, and they’ll get the information they need.

According to Google, these features will roll out to Pixel devices in the coming weeks.

These features could soon make their way to other Android owners, following the Pixel rollout.

It looks like Google is planning to introduce a life-saving feature on some smartphones this year.

Eagle-eyed Android fans spotted a new option tucked away in the settings.

1

Feature was discovered on Google Pixel

However, it is not ready for use yet.

The tool is known as Satellite SOS and if you think it sounds familiar, you’re not mistaken.

Apple has its own version for the iPhone, which was launched over a year ago now.

Last year we had a sneaking suspicion that Google was working on Satellite SOS after hidden code was discovered by nerds.

For those who don’t know, Satellite SOS allows users to reach out in emergencies when there is no data connection or Wi-Fi.

And it’s already being credited with helping save lives.

The feature was noticed by 9to5Google under the Safety & Emergencies section on the latest Pixel smartphones.

Leaked screenshots say: “Your Pixel lets you send messages to emergency services and share your location if you can’t connect to a mobile or Wi-Fi network.”

Most read in Phones and gadgets

It’s not clear if the tool will be rolled out to current Pixel handsets or something for new handsets.

And while it has been spotted on a Pixel, some are hoping it will be more widely available on Android.

Google reveals list of freebies you can claim today and lets Gemini AI text for you first – drivers should check this too

However, your handset must have the correct chip technology to communicate with satellites.

“This is fantastic,” wrote one user on Reddit.

“Especially for rural areas/emergency services off the beaten track.”

As it stands, the button doesn’t work and there’s no official word on it, so it looks like the inclusion of Satellite SOS was an accident.

The other problem is that we don’t know yet which countries it will be available in, so we’ll have to wait until Google properly launches Satellite SOS to find out.
