Konstantin Koltsov, the boyfriend of tennis superstar Aryna Sabalenka, “was most likely drunk” when he died in Miami, his ex-wife has told media in Belarus.

Police confirmed on Tuesday that Koltsov had been to date Australian Open champion Sabalenka, 25, died on Monday at the age of 42 in an “apparent suicide” after jumping from a hotel balcony in Miami.

The Belarusian former professional hockey player, who shares three children with ex-wife Julija Mikhailova, is said to have joined his girlfriend in the city as she prepares for the Miami Open, where she starts her campaign on Friday.

Miami-Dade police have taken over the investigation into the suspected suicide, but in an interview with media in her native Belarus, Mikhailova gave her thoughts on what could have happened.

She has claimed her ex-husband was “most likely drunk” before the fatal fall, and while she says liquor bottles were found in his hotel room, officers could not find a suicide note. She also says that she believes his recent behavior indicated he was not preparing for suicide.

Most likely he was very drunk,” she said Zerkalo. ‘Unfortunately, hockey players are sometimes guilty of that.

‘Empty alcohol bottles were found in the room where Konstantin was staying. There was a balcony with an ocean view. Probably Konstantin did not keep track of his actions.

‘WWe still have the old family computer with Konstantin’s email. I knew the passwords and managed to open some emails. Konstantin had also booked apartments at another location. Purchases that have not yet arrived have been paid for. He rented a car for a long time.

“That is, he did not mean to die. Of course, anything can go to your head, but there was no sign of tragedy.”

She added that he had fallen from the 23rd floor of the St Regis Bal Harbor Resort, and while police immediately ruled out homicide, their investigation is expected to be completed within a month.

Mikhailova said their children Daniel, Alexander and Stefan, aged 18, 16 and five, are coming to terms with his death and claimed the couple’s eldest son, Daniel, is the heir to his estate.

Reflecting on her relationship with Sabalenka, Mikhailova said: ‘Nice girl. I loved Konstantin very much, but Sabalenka treated my children well, so I have a normal attitude towards her.’

She also shared how she first heard of her ex-husband’s death.

“It was March 18,” she said. ‘At first they called me several times asking if I was at home and saying they wanted to tell me something about Konstantin. And then the detective came.

‘He tried to convey the news in a gentle manner as much as possible. But of course I was in shock.

“He then shared information, asked some appropriate questions, explained several procedural points and said we could call him anytime.”

Mikhailova added that she had shared very little communication with Koltsov in the weeks leading up to his death.

Elsewhere, Koltsov’s first coach, Vladislav Astapenko, has expressed his belief that the 42-year-old’s death is linked to family problems.

“He had an argument, it’s a family situation,” he said Tribuna. ‘I can’t understand it myself, it’s very difficult, it’s difficult now’

According to investigators, Bal Harbor police and firefighters were dispatched to the St. Regis Bal Harbor Resort in reference to a man who jumped from a balcony at 12:39 a.m. ET on Monday.

Reports from his native Belarus initially claimed that Kolstov had died of a “dislodged blood clot.”

Koltsov, who played hockey for the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, was pronounced dead by his former club Salavat Yulaev Ufa on the social messaging site Telegram on Tuesday.

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you that Salavat Yulaev’s coach, Konstantin Koltsov, has passed away,” the Russian club’s statement read.

‘He was a strong and cheerful person, he was loved and respected by players, colleagues and fans. Konstantin wrote himself into the history of our club forever.

‘Koltsov won the Russian Championship and the Gagarin Cup as part of Salavat Yulaev and did a great job in the team’s technical staff.

“May his memory burn brightly.”

The death of Sabalenka’s partner comes just five years after her lost her father Sergey after his sudden death at the age of 43.

Like Koltsov, her father had also played professional hockey, and the Belarusian athlete has often spoken about the motivation her father inspired her in her tennis game.

Despite his apparent suicide, the Tennis Channel reports that Sabalenka still plans to play the tournament in the Sunshine State this month.

As a result, she returned to the court on Tuesday to practice for her draw in Friday’s Round of 64, when she will meet the winner of Simona Halep and Paula Badosa’s opening match.

In footage shared by Polish sports commentator Bartosz Ignacik, Sabalenka is seen working her serve, just 24 hours after Koltsov’s death was confirmed.

Sabalenka and Koltsov were first linked in June 2021 and the two-time Australian Open winner has regularly posted photos of them together on her Instagram account.

“I love you @koltsov2021,” she wrote in a message with hearts and other emojis.

A woman was left with the mangled wreck of a 4WD in her backyard for two weeks as she waited for her insurance company to tow the vehicle.

Josephine was woken by the sound of an allegedly drunk driver crashing through the gate of her home in Gladstone, Central Queensland.

‘It was late at night when I went to bed and suddenly I heard three huge explosions. So I jumped out of bed, ran here and saw this car in our yard,” she said A current issue on Monday.

It is clear that the driver left the road – possibly as a result of a blown tire – along an embankment and ended up in Josephine’s garden.

He has since been charged with driving under the influence.

A crashed car (pictured) sat in the back garden of Josephine’s Gladstone home for two weeks after an allegedly drunk driver crashed through her gate

Josephine claims that the driver showed great remorse immediately after the crash and promised to pick up the car the next day and repair her gate.

However, the car was left in place for two weeks after the crash, with Josephine becoming increasingly frustrated.

Because the driver did not answer her calls, Josephine turned to the city and her insurer, Honey Insurance, to have the car removed from her property.

Josephine soon discovered that she was not allowed to touch the car because, although it had been written off, it was still owned by the driver and half of it was on municipal land.

‘The police say that the municipality must do that [remove the car]. The municipality should say that the owner must do that. The insurance company says everyone has to do it, not themselves,” Josephine said.

In addition, Josephine said her insurance required her to pay a $1,000 deductible on her claim.

“We didn’t do anything wrong,” she said, questioning why she had to pay the fee.

After two weeks of negotiations with the police and municipality, Josephine's insurer finally agreed earlier this week to remove the car (photo) and repair her fence.

Honey Insurance told Josephine earlier this week that it would tow the car and repair her fencing.

The company said it could not agree to the car’s removal earlier because the police did not give permission.

It is understood that the insurer has also decided to waive Josephine’s deductible.

“We apologize for any confusion this issue may have caused the customer,” Honey Insurance said.

But before he could get to the music track, the cameras and sound were cut off for about 18 seconds.

And when they came back on air, viewers were left guessing as to what happened when The Rock engaged in a conversation with a fan.

When he spoke to the person, he appeared to say, “You look like someone The Rock might love. Drunk and horny.”

He then added that he “appreciated it” before laughing off the incident.

One WWE fan commented on social media: “We’re definitely back in the attitude era 😂.”

Another added: “This is like the second or third time they’ve had to black out. 🤣 They need to find a better way to edit this.

“But regardless of how you feel about Rock, who else gets crazy reactions like that? Bro he is!”

A third replied: “Why would they censor the only interesting thing happening on WWE?”

While a fourth replied: “Haha quite hilarious fr 😅.”

This is the second time this month that the WWE cameras have been forced to go black during a segment involving The Rock.

The Primera Division club has confirmed that the suspects all play for their team.

The prosecutor says she was invited via Instagram by one of the men to a hotel room in Tucumán, Argentina, after a cup match.

The pair were later joined by three other players, it is claimed.

The alleged victim said she was sexually assaulted after drinking too many drinks and having to lie down on a bed when she became “very dizzy.”

She went to the police on Wednesday to file a formal complaint.

Detectives and the alleged victim’s attorney, Patricia Neme, confirmed the incident is being investigated as a rape.

On Thursday, Buenos Aires’ Vélez, one of the most successful clubs in Argentine football, confirmed it was aware of the complaint and had removed all four men from the squad pending investigations.

They said they would provide investigators with “any information and other relevant assistance they require.”

Vélez has won ten La Liga titles and five international cups, including the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup.

They are currently seventh in the rankings.

He continued: ‘It was great to see him on this show and I feel guilty about not seeing his speech tonight, but he will be fine. But I have to give things a fair amount of balance.

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards saw the best and biggest names in film and television descend upon the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The gathering may not have been able to be a reality months ago after a taxing 118-day strike, with came to an end on November 8.

Lily Gladstone upset A-listers Emma Stone and Margot Robbie while Oppenheimer triumphed in most of the major film categories at the 30th annual SAG Awards.

Cillian Murphy earned the Male Actor in a Leading Role gong while Robert Downey Jr. took home Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

Yet it wasn’t just the winners that made the headlines as there were plenty of emotional, hilarious, and incredible moments on stage as the stars celebrated the best films and television programmes of 2023.

Now MailOnline takes a look back at the top viral moments of the SAG Awards 2024.

Pedro Pascal was shocked – and a bit tipsy – when he won big at the 30th annual SAG Awards on Saturday

Pedro Pascal reveals he’s drunk on stage

Pedro Pascal was shocked – and a bit tipsy – when he won big at the 30th annual SAG Awards.

The star, 48, took home Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role in The Last Of Us.

No doubt it was a total upset as he beat out three Succession actors including Kieran Culkin , Brian Cox, and Matthew Macfadyen who have all swept Award Season. Billy Crudup was also nominated for The Morning Show.

The Mandalorian star – who had been quaffing tequila – was just as surprised by the result as he said: ‘This is wrong, for a number of reasons. I’m a little drunk. I thought I could get drunk.’

‘I’m making a fool of myself but thank you so much for this! I’ve been in the union since 1999 so this is an incredible f*****g honor’, he continued. ‘To the nominees, all of you, I can’t remember any of your names right now.’

Pascal fought back tears thanking his family but swiftly ended his tipsy acceptance speech by joking: ‘I’m going to have a panic attack and I’m going to leave.’

After the win, Pedro told Tan France : ‘I don’t remember what I said. I just was very surprised. … Let’s YouTube it later.’

He also said he was going to make out with Keiran Culkan as his revenge against the actor following their hilarious fake feud at the Emmys, where Kiera said ‘Suck it, Pedro’ while accepting his gong.

‘He is the greatest,’ Pascal added.

Billie Eilish signs Melissa McCarthy’s face

Billie Eilish and Melissa McCarthy had a celebrity encounter that went hilariously wrong at the 2024 SAG Awards ceremony on Saturday.

After Melissa gushed about how big of a fan she was of Billie’s, the 22-year-old singer–songwriter scrawled her autograph all over the 53-year-old actress’ forehead.

The moment had viewers at home who caught the ceremony on Netflix laughing about the shocking moment, which inspired social media users to joke about Melissa’s performance as a Billie Eilish superfan.

She even revealed that she had worked with Billie’s mother – actress, teacher and musician Maggie Baird – as her improv coach when she was pregnant with the future hitmaker.

Melissa was clearly overjoyed to be sharing the stage with Billie and begged the singer to sign her dress.

‘No, I don’t want to ruin it,’ Billie replied, but the actress took it as a compliment.

‘Thank you for liking my choices,’ Melissa said. Instead, she asked Billie to sign her face, which got an enthusiastic response from her.

‘Oh, OK. I thought you were going to be like, “I don’t want to ruin your pretty face,”‘ Melissa joked.

‘I don’t care,’ Billie mumbled as she leaned in to scrawl her autograph over Melissa forehead, while hilariously putting a hand over her mouth to stop her from talking.

Some people hilariously compared the display to when Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) got a mustache and goatee drawn on her face on Friends.

‘Billie Eilish signing Melissa McCarthy’s face is the funniest thing I’ve seen in 5 decades of awards show fandom,’ gushed one user.

Devil Wears Prada reunion

The Devil Wears Prada cast members Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt thrilled fans as they reunited onstage.

The trio were tasked with presenting the best actor in a comedy series with Streep, 74, appearing on stage first by herself, telling the crowd she had forgotten her glasses and the envelope with this year’s winner.

Hathaway, 41, and Blunt, 41, then appeared and handed Streep her missing items, recreating their iconic roles as assistants to Miranda Priestly (Streep) in The Devil Wears Prada, which aired in 2006.

Streep then began presenting the award, as she asked: ‘It’s an age-old question, where does the character end, and the actor begin?’

‘Meryl and Miranda Priestly are sort of like twins,’ Blunt quipped, which Streep quickly began denying.

‘I don’t think I’m anything like Miranda Priestly!’

‘No no. That wasn’t a question,’ Hathaway hilariously interrupted her, with a nod to one of Miranda’s most cutting lines from the film.

While Streep was trying to open the envelope Blunt quoted her character one more time, telling her: ‘By all means move at a glacial pace, you know how that thrills me.

‘It’s been almost 18-years since The Devil Wears Prada — based on the 2003 New York Times bestseller by Lauren Weisberger written about her experience as an assistant to longtime Vogue editor Anna Wintour — aired.

Idris Elba swears in front of Oprah Winfrey

Idris Elba was the first presenter of the night on stage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

During his speech, the actor, 51, said the F-word and told the nominees that they’re allowed to swear while accepting awards thanks to the show streaming on Netflix instead of airing on television.

However, Idris told people to control themselves and joked to not say anything that they wouldn’t say in front of Oprah .

The camera then panned down to the chat show legend, before Idris cried: ‘F***! That was Oprah.’

It came just moments after Hannah Waddingham had to usher Idris out of her seat in a hilarious opening segment.

Tan France ‘awkwardly’ flirts with Pedro Pascal

Tan France has been roasted for his ‘awkward’ backstage flirting with Pedro Pascal.

The Last of Us actor, 48, joined France, 40, who was conducting interviews with the winners, after he picked up the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series award, for his role in the HBO zombie show.

After the Chilean hunk complimented the Queer Eye star’s silver hair, France responded by saying, We are not here to flirt with me, Pedro Pascal.’

‘Yes we are. What else could we be here for?’ Pascal — who shortly before shared that he was drunk while onstage — replied.

France then asked, ‘How badly are you going to rag Kieran at the afterparty tonight?’ in reference to Pascal and Succession star Kieran Culkin ‘s ongoing rivalry at award shows, but Pascal simply replied that he would ‘make out’ with Culkin instead.

‘That’ll be my revenge,’ the Mandalorian star added.

‘It’s cause you’re drunk,’ France stated, summing up the situation. ‘I would love to see this, that would make me so happy,’ he went on.

Fans quickly took to the comments to discuss the ‘awkward’ interview, with one writing, ‘Can someone tell Tan France these are the #SAGAwards and not Grindr. Bring back the commercials.’

‘These Tan France interviews are actually inflicting massive amount of psychic damage. Please stop @Netflix,’ another user asked.

‘I’m enjoying the #SAG Awards on Netflix – but the weird Tan France interviews are so awkward & uncomfortable. This is not his jam.’

Modern Family cast reunion

The star-studded 30th Annual SAG Awards proved to be a night full of reunions.

Among them was the cast of Modern Family, who got together four years after their show ended to present the prize for best comedy ensemble to the stars of The Bear.

Sofia Vergara, 51, sizzled in a red hot gown as she joined former co-stars Ed O’Neill, 77, Ty Burrell , 56, Julie Bowen , 53, Eric Stonestreet, 52, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, 48, onstage.

At one point Vergara plugged her new Netflix series Griselda, but got scolded as Stonestreet quipped, ‘Jesse, pay up. I told you she’d mention it in the first 10 seconds.’

Meanwhile her co-star Julie had a hilarious moment of her own as she got distracted by Barbie star Ryan Gosling in the audience.

It all started while they were presenting the award, which their ABC show won four previous times, and Burrell reflected on their series, saying, ‘This really brings back memories.’

‘You guys ever miss it?’ Burrell asked his former costars.

His on-screen daughter Bowen replied: ‘Oh, hell yeah, but of course we had a great time, 11 seasons, 250 episodes. Come on.’

She then got distracted by Gosling, as she giggled and pointed at him in the crowd: ‘It’s Ryan Gosling . I’m sorry,’ before catching her train of thought, ‘250 episodes, it never happens.’

‘It’s happened twice to me,’ replied O’Neill, who starred as Al Bundy on the 1987-97 Fox comedy Married…With Children.

Driving home from work on the day her life changed forever, Nicole McClure felt her feet tingling and her sense of direction wavering. Then she saw colorful lights illuminating the early morning landscape.

“Oh, nice lights,” she remembers thinking, not realizing a highway patrol car was coming up behind her. During what should have been a simple drive home from her late-night job at Walmart near Olympia, Washington, Ms. McClure became increasingly disoriented and crashed into two roundabouts before stopping.

The state trooper who had followed her ran to her door with his gun drawn and yelled at her to get out of the car, according to his dashcam video. He demanded to know if she had been drinking or taking drugs. She denied it. “I'm not really feeling well,” she said. The soldier was not convinced. She was taken to jail, charged with driving under the influence.

The arrest marked the start of a more than 24-hour ordeal in the criminal justice system, at a time when Ms McClure was in urgent need of medical care. Her lawyers said she lay in her own urine on the floor of a cell as prison staff taunted her and apparently dismissed her as drunk. When someone finally realized she needed medical attention, records show, doctors discovered a brain hemorrhage and she was rushed into surgery. She spent 17 days in the hospital and was no longer able to work or care for herself.

Ms. McClure's case, detailed in a lawsuit, case files and interviews, provides a shocking insight into how the quick assumptions law enforcement officers sometimes make during traffic stops can have devastating consequences.

Many law enforcement agencies now offer drug recognition training to help officers distinguish between someone who is under the influence and someone who is in a medical crisis. Yet assessment failures continue to lead to delays in medical care, some of which are fatal. Boston and San Diego each had recent cases of drunken driving arrests that later turned out to be drivers who had suffered a stroke. A similar case emerged last year in Puyallup, Wash., not far from where Mrs. McClure lives.

“I knew I wasn't drunk, I just didn't feel well. I was so tired,” Ms. McClure said in an interview in her apartment, where she is now largely confined due to brain damage, that her claims in the lawsuit were made much worse by the delay in medical care.

A spokesman for the Washington State Patrol declined to comment, citing the lawsuit. Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders, who oversees the jail where Ms. McClure was being held, said in a statement that a thorough investigation into the “serious” allegations was underway.

“The safety of our inmates and staff remains our top priority,” he said.

Before her arrest, Ms. McClure, 38, enjoyed hiking and cooking. She keeps photos of herself from that time, now that she struggles with both activities.

She took a job as a night stock clerk at Walmart in 2022. One evening in March of the same year, she was still at work when she found herself in a state of confusion. She couldn't seem to operate the scanning machine she used for work. She had trouble setting an alarm on her phone. Her hands became sweaty and her feet stung.

Ultimately, Ms. McClure recalls, her boss let her leave work early.

In law enforcement documents, Officer Jonathan Barnes wrote that he saw Ms. McClure's car traveling at a slow speed and leaving the lane not far from the Walmart. He turned on his lights and sirens, but then turned them off when the car didn't stop. He later saw the vehicle drive over an elevated section of a roundabout and then hit the center of a second roundabout, damaging a front tire.

After Ms. McClure came to a stop, video shows Mr. Barnes yelling at her to get out of her vehicle. He accused Ms. McClure of eluding police and resisting arrest, and placed handcuffs on Ms. McClure's wrists. One of her hands was still holding her keys, and the officer accused her of trying to use them as a weapon, although there was no sign of that on the video.

In a flat voice, Mrs. McClure repeatedly insisted that she had not escaped. “I think I'm really tired,” she told the officer. She said she left work because she “felt dizzy” and denied using substances. “Please let me go,” she said.

But Mr Barnes ignored her protests. “All you're telling me is that you're under the influence,” he told her.

According to records, another trooper who arrived on the scene at a sobriety test asked Ms. McClure to estimate when 30 seconds had passed. She estimated it at 35 seconds. The troopers reported that she had “very strong and distinct eyelid twitches.” She told them she had smoked marijuana two days earlier. She was then taken to hospital – not for treatment, but to take blood samples to test for intoxicants.

Before these results could be analyzed, Mrs. McClure was taken to the county jail. There, Ms. McClure recalled, one of the guards teased her by saying, “Why don't you take another shot?” She said she replied that she wasn't drunk, but she wasn't feeling well.

“I remember them telling me to put on their clothes,” Ms. McClure said. “I tried to put on my pants, but I couldn't. I kept putting the same leg in the same trouser leg.”

From there, she was placed in a cell, where at one point she was found in a pool of her own urine, her lawyers said. She started vomiting.

She remained that way for more than 24 hours until the jail's medical team was called in to examine her and recommended she be taken to the hospital, records show. The toxicology analysis ultimately found no signs of alcohol or drugs.

Instead, doctors at the hospital diagnosed a brain hemorrhage that likely started with a blood clot in the brain, and removed part of her skull to relieve the pressure, according to Ms. McClure's lawsuit. The damage to her brain resulted in “a lifetime of diminished capacity,” the lawsuit claims.

In an interview, Ms. McClure struggled to formulate the words to describe her situation. She said the episode left her struggling to care for herself. She cannot drive or work. Sometimes she can't remember all her medical appointments, or even where she is.

“I'm afraid to go into a store without knowing where my ride is parked,” she said. “I'm afraid to go outside.”

In her lawsuit, which seeks a jury trial and damages, Ms. McClure's attorney, Anne Vankirk, argued that her long-term injuries were preventable and suffered as a result of delays in receiving treatment.

Seth Stoughton, a former police officer who now works as a law professor at the University of South Carolina, said it can sometimes be difficult for officers to determine whether someone's behavior is the result of mental illness, substances or a medical episode. The latest training recommendations, he said, call for officers to always be on the lookout for indicators of medical problems and to make the mistake of seeking professional help if there is a potential health problem.

“Officers are not doctors, not paramedics,” he said. “They really don't have, and won't have, the expertise to diagnose the cause of the medical problems. But they must be able to identify indicators.”

Motorcycles – Vietnam's preferred mode of transport – are piling up on confiscated lots in Ho Chi Minh City as it becomes more cost-effective for some owners to abandon them than pay the fines to get them back.

The city, Vietnam's financial center, has become more aggressive in tackling drunk driving in recent years by increasing fines and impounding vehicles. Those fines now often exceed the value of the vehicles, which many drivers don't reclaim, officials say.

Police are now wondering what to do with it.

Some residents are so frustrated by this that they are taking their complaints public, even though criticizing the ruling Communist Party can be risky in Vietnam.

Nguyen Khang, 30, who works at a bank in Ho Chi Minh City, said an inefficient and unnecessarily punitive system is holding motorcycles “hostage.”

“The relevant authorities also understand this,” he added. “But fundamentally they haven't found a more holistic approach yet.”

The zero tolerance The campaign against drink-driving reflects previous attempts in Vietnam to promote law and order – for example clearing out food vendors from the streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City – which was widely perceived as heavy-handed.

Hue-Tam Jamme, an expert on urban development in Vietnam, said the abandoned motorcycles reflect a transition: As more Vietnamese join the middle class and buy their first cars, bicycles are becoming less essential in a country widely known stands for its motorcycles. traffic.

Car ownership in Vietnam is still far below that of richer countries, although it rose from 3.3 to 4.8 cars per 100 households between 2018 and 2020, recent government data shows.

In Ho Chi Minh City, cars make up a relatively small share of vehicles on the roadway – 13 percent in 2018, according to Professor Jamme's data, but their presence has already raised tensions at street level. There have been occasional physical altercations between car owners and residents who resent the loss of space for motorcycle parking and commerce on sidewalks.

“The motorcycle is no longer the status symbol it used to be,” said Professor Jamme, who teaches at Arizona State University and studies the role vehicles play in Vietnam's cities and economy.

“I'm not that surprised that people are willing to let go,” she added. “A big, heavy fine can be the trigger to say, 'Okay, I'm not even going to take it.'”

A four-year campaign against the harmful effects of alcohol has been a major factor in vehicle seizures across Vietnam in recent years. Among other changes, the maximum fine for drunk driving has roughly doubled in 2020 to the equivalent of more than $300, which is more than the monthly salary of the average Vietnamese worker. The law prohibits people from driving with any amount of alcohol in their system.

The campaign has had tangible effects in a country where beer flows freely in sidewalk restaurants and binge drinking is common. National beer sales down by at least a quarter almost immediately; tens of thousands of people lost theirs driver's licenses; and last year, traffic-related accidents, injuries and fatalities all fell, Ho Chi Minh City police said.

Ho Chi Minh City saw nearly 155,000 vehicles seized in 2022, most of them motorcycles, and most as a result of alcohol-related traffic violations, a local police official said told state news media last month.

Nguyen Huu Liem, 56, a construction worker in Ho Chi Minh City, said both his driver's license and motorcycle were confiscated in January after he “had a little drink to relax with a friend at the end of the day. ”

“In my opinion, the fine is excessive for the average worker,” he said.

His motorcycle is worth five million VND, the equivalent of about $200. The drunk driving fine he received was about $80 more. He paid the fine anyway, he said, because police told him it was the only way to get his driver's license back.

Other drivers leave their bikes at police premises in Ho Chi Minh City, and the pile-up causes administrative headaches.

Since last month, it was the city's traffic police shortage of motorcycle parking with 100,000 square meters, about the size of a city park, police told local news media. There have been thousands of bicycles sold at auctionbut the backlog has continued to grow and the fires have continued to grow broke out every now and then at the lots.

Jack Dang, 35, a construction worker in Ho Chi Minh City, said he witnessed groups of people searching the plots for motorcycle parts.

“Once they're brought here,” he said, “it's over.”
