Paolo Taviani, half of a famous Italian film duo, dies at the age of 92

Paolo Taviani, who with his brother Vittorio made some of Italy’s most acclaimed films of the past half century — including “Padre Padrone,” which won the top prize at the 1977 Cannes Film Festival — died Feb. 29 in Rome. He was 92.

His son, Ermanno Taviani, said the cause of death in a hospital was pulmonary edema.

The Taviani brothers emerged in the late 1950s as part of a generation of Italian filmmakers – including Bernardo Bertolucci, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Gillo Pontecorvo – who were inspired by the country’s neorealist movement but determined to go beyond it. (Vittorio Taviani died in 2018.)

Although the brothers came from an urban, intellectual family – their father was a lawyer, their mother a teacher – their work was a tribute to traditional life in the Italian countryside where they had grown up. “Padre Padrone,” for example, tells the story of a boy’s struggle between the demands of his overbearing father, who wants him to become a farmer, and his own dreams of becoming a linguist.

They injected their films with a sense of spectacle that distinguished them from the austerity of neorealist predecessors such as their idol Roberto Rossellini, who in turn championed their work and, as president of the Cannes jury in 1977, helped insure that “Padre Padrone” won the festival’s coveted Palme D’or award. It was a surprise victory in a field that also included another Italian film, ‘A Special Day’.

“Rossellini allowed us to understand our own experiences, to really understand what we had been through,” Paolo Taviani told The International Herald Tribune in 1993. “To understand it in a way that would have been impossible if we hadn’t seen his films. And we felt that if film had this kind of power, we wanted to master it.”

The brothers were born two years apart and were inseparable for most of their lives. They both studied for a while at the University of Pisa, started making films together and even lived together in Rome. Every morning they walked their dogs together and discussed ideas for new films or the progress of current projects.

The brothers wrote most of their screenplays together, but on set they took a different approach. They took turns directing, scene by scene, with one brother directing and the other watching from a video monitor.

“The crew that knows us asks, ‘Who’s the first today?’” Paolo Taviani told The New York Times in 2013. “And as long as that person is at the helm, the crew only has to answer to the director who is on is in charge at that moment. They can’t ask Paolo what they want to do. When it’s done, I’ll come and watch the video.”

Their work was often based on historical and literary sources; one of their favorite writers was Luigi Pirandello, whose lyrical absurdism matched their own sense of storytelling. Their film “Kaos” (1984) is an adaptation of four of his short stories.

One of their best-known late-career films was ‘Cesare Deve Morire’ or ‘Caesar Must Die’ (2012), about the staging of Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’ in a prison near Rome.

The film’s premise isn’t as strange as it seems (Italy has about a hundred prison theater troupes), but the brothers’ approach was still unique. Most of the actors were prisoners and the film was shot in a real prison. The Tavianis, working on a shoestring budget, even had to negotiate access with the unofficial leaders of the prisoners, who were said to be dangerous members of the mafia.

“We shot the film in 21 days, with very little money, just like when we were very young,” says Paolo Taviani. “There was no time or need to think about anything, this or that, on the part of the producer. We were free. This really helped the film.”

Paolo Taviani was born on November 8, 1931 in San Miniato, a village in Tuscany. His parents, Ermanno and Jolanda (Brogi) Taviani, were anti-fascists in the 1930s and 1940s under the dictatorship of Benito Mussolini.

As children they rarely saw films; instead, as a treat, their father took them to nearby Pisa to see the opera. But after a German attack near their village forced the family to move to Pisa during World War II, the boys had better access to cinemas.

They both remembered walking past a theater one day, shortly after the war, as a crowd of people came out. The movie was terrible, the audience told them. Their curiosity piqued, they went inside, where they saw Mr. Rossellini’s “Paisan” (1946) still playing on the screen. They were hooked.

“When we saw it, we realized that through art we can gain an understanding of our experiences that is greater than what we derive from living them directly,” Paolo Taviani told the Los Angeles Times in 1994. “By the time we left the theater, we decided to dedicate our lives to making films.”

The brothers briefly attended the University of Pisa, but left before graduating. After a few years as journalists, they began working as film assistants, including for Mr. Rossellini, before striking out on their own.

Paolo Taviani married Lina Nerli in 1957. She and their son survive him, as does their daughter, Valentina Taviani; his brother, Franco; his sisters, Maria Grazia and Giovanna; and four grandchildren.

The Taviani brothers made a series of well-received documentaries, mainly on subjects from Tuscany, before shooting their first feature film, “Un Uomo da Bruciare” (“A Man for Burning”), in 1962. It tells the story of a union organizer who takes on the mafia and is ultimately murdered.

Many of their films are made for television and supported by RAI, Italy’s public broadcaster, a relationship that insulated them from the pressures of commercial filmmaking while at the same time giving them the freedom to explore.

After “Padre Padrone” won top honors at Cannes in 1977, the brothers returned in 1982 to win the festival’s grand jury prize with their film “La Notte di San Lorenzo,” known in the United States as “The Night of the falling stars’. .” It was also Italy’s official submission as Best Foreign Language Film for the Academy Awards, although it did not receive a nomination.

Paolo Taviani made only one film after his brother’s death in 2018: ‘Leonora Addio’, aka ‘Leonora, Goodbye’, released in 2022.

“Making films has taken us to strange places we would otherwise never have seen and met so many new people – including ourselves – who are constantly changing,” Paolo Taviani told The Times in 1986. “It is a wonderful calling, and after all these years it has still not failed us.”

Electric Fields, a duo whose work combines dance music with indigenous culture, will represent Australia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

The pair, made up of singer Zaachariaha Fielding and keyboardist and producer Michael Ross, will perform their song One Milkali (One Blood), a song about a ‘united world’, at the competition, which takes place in Malmö, Sweden in May.

The group is well known to fans since their song 2000 And Anything came second at the Eurovision Australia Decides song contest in 2019.

They lost first place to Kate Miller-Heidke, who ultimately finished ninth in the final competition with her song Zero Gravity.

Electric Fields will be the first duo to send Australia to the Eurovision-reported industry blog TV tonight, after SBS and Blink TV announced their participation in the competition on Wednesday.

One Milkali uses Yankunytjatjara in its lyrics, an indigenous language of the Anangu people.

Fielding rose to fame after appearing on The Voice in 2014 and later co-founding Electric Fields with Ross in 2015.

It comes after Perth progressive metal band Voyager wowed fans at last year’s Eurovision Song Contest with their song Promise.

Although they finished in ninth place, the song took off thanks to their spectacular performance.

It ended up charting Apple Music’s metal chart in Iceland, Ireland, UK, Israel, Poland, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Slovenia, Finland and Lithuania.

Promise also charted on Spotify’s Viral Songs chart, hitting third in Sweden and fourth in Iceland and Australia last May.

Australian singer Silia Kapsis, 17, will represent Cyprus at Eurovision 2024 with her song Liar.

Voyager came ninth, after Estonia, Belgium, Ukraine, Norway, Italy, Israel, Finland and Sweden.

Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson recently signed a record $200 million dollar contract to stay with KIIS FM for the next ten years.

But Sandilands, 52, has revealed that the radio duo’s former employers, 2DayFM, have taken a bold move to have them return to the network.

“We were offered so much money by the old joint [to come back]the shock jock said on Thursday morning’s Kyle and Jackie O Show.

“We don’t want to go there, but they’re going to give us a lot of money,” he revealed the pair told each other during negotiations.

A return to 2DayFM would likely have meant the pair taking over the breakfast slot currently occupied by Hughesy, Ed and Erin’s show.

Sandilands first faced the paparazzi rumors in July last year when he returned to Sydney from his European honeymoon.

Sandilands hinted that he was open to a possible move if he received an attractive offer, asking Jackie: “What’s my motto?”

“Where there’s a cash register, there’s a way,” she replied.

Kyle confirmed she was right and joked that this was Jackie’s motto too.

However, the radio queen was quick to shoot Kyle down, saying she had a different outlook on life.

“I don’t live my life based on money alone, there are other things too,” she said.

The pair were previously employed by Southern Cross Austereo and had a hit show on 2Day FM.

According to the Australian Financial Statement, the duo’s old network, SCA, was “quite aggressive” in pursuing the pair before they re-signed with ARN.

‘This is like sports rights for radio. “It is very likely this will be the largest talent media deal ever,” a network insider said at the time.

ARN Media CEO and Managing Director Ciaran Davis told Daily Mail Australia: “We do not view contract negotiations as a one-off exercise.”

Last November, the Sydney-based radio duo signed a record-breaking ten-year, $200 million deal live on air, keeping them on air until 2034.

“Since Kyle and Jackie O joined us, we have worked very hard to ensure that they feel part of a larger network, and that everyone contributes to it.

“I don’t think it’s a surprise to us that they’ve had the highest listening audience ever. Having worked in radio in many countries, I think they are the best in the world at what they do.”

The Kyle and Jackie O Show originally aired on 2Day FM from January 2005 to December 2013 and moved to current network KIIS FM in January 2014.

Lauren Phillips and Jase Hawkins have announced they will return to the airwaves in Melbourne next Friday.

The popular duo made the dramatic announcement in early February that they would be launching a new breakfast show on Nova’s 100 FM, after their program was axed by KIIS FM last year to make way for Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson.

“No one is more excited to be back together and back on the air than the two of us. We are counting down the minutes until next Friday,” Lauren said in a statement on Friday.

“We have plenty of stories to tell.”

The new radio program is broadcast every weekday from 6:00 am to 9:00 am.

The highly rated team replaces the morning show of Ben Harvey, Liam Stapleton and Belle Jackson.

'We can't forget that Holly once looked like her and look what happened to her: she was the host for 14 years.

'Martin and Emma both agree that she has everything it takes to be a star, it's really exciting and she is now completely in pole position for the job.

Buckingham Palace has quietly sidelined Harry and Andrew, preventing them from replacing King Charles.

The Mail's Robert Hardman was the first to say the princes could be barred from serving as state advisers as early as October 2022.

Although the pair are still technically state advisors, the king has made a provision that means they will never be called upon.

With the Counselors of State Act 2022, the monarch added the Princess Royal and the Duke of Edinburgh to the list of state counselors.

Yet Lord True, Inaugural Seal and Leader of the Lords, confirmed in a statement on November 21, 2022 that in practical terms, only working members would be called upon to act as Charles's deputy.

Buckingham Palace has quietly sidelined Harry and Andrew, preventing them from replacing King Charles

Although the pair are still technically state advisors, the king has made a provision that means they will never be called upon

The Lord Privy Seal Lord True told colleagues: 'This Bill represents a practical solution and safeguard to ensure that the machinery of government can continue to exist.'

He stressed: 'The Royal Household has confirmed that practicing members of the Royal Family – working members – will be called upon to act as State Advisors and that diaries will be drawn up to make this practicable.

It's the latest humiliation for royal duo Harry and Andrew, who have both faced controversy in recent years.

The rule also means that Andrew's eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, cannot act as a substitute for the king.

The Mail's Robert Hardman was the first to say the princes could be barred from serving as state advisers as early as October 2022.

If the monarch is absent for any reason, state affairs – such as the approval of most appointments and legislation – can be carried out by two state advisors.

In 2022, suggestions were made in the Lords to strip Harry and Andrew of their state advisers.

It comes as Harry is set to be inducted as a 'Living Legend of Aviation' on Friday at an awards ceremony hosted by John Travolta in Beverly Hills, California.

The Duke's work in setting up the Invictus Games Foundation will also be celebrated. It is not clear whether Harry or his wife Meghan will attend the glitzy awards.

Meanwhile, Prince Andrew has once again been linked to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein after numerous documents relating to the socialite were released.

Tom Smothers – half of the iconic comedy duo The Smothers Brothers – has died at the age of 86 after a battle with cancer.

His brother Dick Smothers, 84, announced that his brother and co-star died Tuesday at home surrounded by family in Sonoma County, California.

Dick said: “Tom was not only the loving older brother anyone would want in their lives, he was a unique creative partner.

“I am forever grateful to have spent a lifetime with him, on and off stage, for more than 60 years.

His brother Dick Smothers, 84, announced that his brother and co-star died Tuesday at home surrounded by family in Sonoma County, California; the brothers are seen in January 2010

‘Our relationship was like a good marriage: the longer we were together, the more we loved and respected each other. We were truly blessed.”

Dick and his wife Marie have requested that memorial donations be made in Tom’s honor to the National Comedy Center.

Tom and Dick began performing as the Smothers Brothers in 1959 because they wanted to become folk musicians, but the older brother felt he was not good enough to be a professional but funny enough to do comedy.

The late star previously spoke about making that pivot in an interview with Comedy couch as he said, “It was a series of gigs when we started as a duet in Aspen. I’ve done all the introductions. I just made something up for each song.

“And Dickie said, ‘Why don’t you try to repeat some of those things?’ I said, “I don’t know.” I didn’t know you could repeat things. And I started repeating it and Dickie said, “That’s wrong.” And soon he said, ‘That’s wrong, you’re stupid.’ It became kind of an argument.’

Tom first appeared on television on The Steve Allen Show in 1961 before starring in a single episode of Burke’s Law.

The two siblings then made it big when they starred in their own CBS sitcom entitled The Smothers Brothers Show from 1965 to 1966.

They then launched another variety show on CBS that became an instant hit: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which debuted in 1967.

The series featured appearances from the likes of The Who and Buffalo Springfield, as well as sharp sketches mocking the establishment and pushing back against the Vietnam War.

Baby boomers embraced the show and the debut season landed at number 16 in the ratings.

However, the show was also controversial with network censors. It was suddenly canceled in 1970 by the channel, which accused the brothers of missing the censors’ deadline.

The museum – which has a home base in Jamestown, New York – is the country’s official cultural institution dedicated to comedy and has showcased the career and legacy of the Smothers Brothers.

Tom and Dick Smothers are seen in Chicago in February 1983. They began performing as the Smothers Brothers in 1959.

National Comedy Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson said in a statement: “Tom Smothers was not only an extraordinary comedic talent who, along with his brother Dick, became the most enduring comedy duo in history, entertaining the world for more than six decades – but a true champion for freedom of expression, who harnesses the power of comedy to push boundaries and our political consciousness.

“Tom was a true pioneer who changed the face of television and transformed our culture with The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, which satirized politics, fought racism, protested the Vietnam War and spearheaded Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, current network late night shows, and more.”

The brothers have quite a draw at the museum, as in 2019 the two reunited on stage ‘to celebrate their legendary careers, and we are honored to showcase Tom’s remarkable work and legacy here at the National Comedy Center for to be preserved for generations to come.’

Smothers is survived by his children Bo and Riley Rose Smothers, grandson Phoenix, Marcy Carriker Smothers, sister-in-law Marie Smothers, and several nephews and a niece. He was predeceased by his son Tom and sister Sherry Smothers.
