AN experienced gardener has shared a method that allows her to grow more crops with less space.

A handy app helped her figure out which plants grew well together and which didn’t.

Sabrina (@sabrina.duurzaam.leven) shared the gardening advice in a TikTok video.

She passed on her wisdom so that beginners did not have to waste their time and energy.

“Something I wish I knew before I started gardening that would have made the process so much easier, and that is the square foot gardening method,” she said.

Her hack required rope, a staple gun, a tape measure and scissors.

She divided her raised garden bed into one-foot squares with twine.

“[It will help me grow so much more food in less space,” she said.

“How it works is for each square of the garden bed you will plant a certain number of seeds or plants depending on the space required for each plant.”

To help her plan her garden and make sure different plants worked well next to each other, she used the Planter app.

With the app, she created a visual of her garden, including its size and the plants she’s growing.

Best of all, the app will help the gardener maximize their space and make sure the plants have enough room.

“It will tell you how much space is required for them,” she said.

“For example, it will show you that a tomato plant will actually take up four squares whereas you can plant four lettuces or 16 carrots in each square.”

For trickier plants, the app also came with a built-in companion and combative feature.

“This app also tells you which plants are companion plants and which are combative which is super helpful,” she said.

Sabrina shared an additional tip that allowed her to harvest crops all season.

“I like to plant half in the square now and the other half later so everything doesn’t mature at once and you can have a continual harvest,” she said.

“With this method, you are able to grow more than traditional row gardens because you are planting crops closer together which maximizes spaces and yield.”

The method also required less maintenance overall, with less weeding and watering.

Gardeners thanked her for her sage advice.

“This is EVERYTHING! You just saved my sanity! I’m about to plan out where to plant this afternoon and now I’m so much less overwhelmed,” said one commenter.

If you must, I suggest a technique called response substitution, where he is rewarded for behavior other than sniffing or licking feet when he gets the chance.

Q: WHEN I am cooking dinner, my six-year-old cat, Marmalade, jumps onto the work surface in an attempt to collect something.

I put him back on the ground, but he is persistent.

He is well fed, but he likes treats.

What do you recommend to stop surfing his dresser?

I thought only dogs did that, but he’s an opportunist.

Sean says: This is a common problem.

The trick is to make it unpleasant by changing what’s on the counter.

It’s a bit complicated – and you may have to do it repeatedly, which can be annoying – but covering the counters with aluminum foil or loose plastic sheeting for a while is a good deterrent.

Cats hate stepping on this.

Marmalade may then learn not to pop up, or may simply start over once the lining is removed.

Don’t reward the behavior and keep him out of the kitchen while cooking. This can also help.

Question: WOULD a bearded dragon be a good pet for my children?

My sons Ethan and Kyle, aged seven and eight respectively, are passionate about reptiles and I want to encourage their passion.

They asked for it, but would it be kind?

Sean says: They may still be a little young.

A responsible adult in the home will need to take control.

Lizards that are active during the day, such as bearded dragons, have sensitive needs.

They should be properly supplemented with calcium and multivitamins, fed a varied diet of live insects, a variety of vegetables and occasionally fruit.

They also need expensive UVB lamps and heat lamps to produce vitamin D to absorb calcium and maintain a healthy metabolism and skeletal system.

If all these needs are not met, they can become very ill.

And they can live more than 15 years, so it’s a long-term commitment.

When put on a lizard, a leopard or a crested gecko requires a little less maintenance, but reptiles are still a specialized pet.

They need the best possible start, not the bare minimum of housing and equipment that is sometimes sold with them.

A lot of research is needed!

Question: OUR two-year-old female poodle Misty sleeps on our bed at night.

But she has to pee two or three times a night and that disrupts our sleep.

Is that normal? And will she grow out of it as she gets older?

Sean says: Normally she should have outgrown that in two years.

Are you sure she needs to pee and doesn’t really just want late night walks and fun time with you?

My suggestion is to do a lot more walking and stimulation during the day, and finally a good long walk in the evening to make sure she has had enough time to do her business, both types.

Then crate training in the bedroom, or outside of it, might help you get a good night’s sleep.

Also pick up her water bowl after dinner and put it down first thing in the morning.

Hello to yellow for anxious dogs

OWNERS can now help anxious dogs show their true colors – with a range of yellow accessories.

According to the Royal Veterinary College, a third of puppies have suffered from mental health problems since lockdown.

Sarah Jones, founder of accessories company My Anxious Dog, owns an anxious cocker spaniel, Bella, 12, who she always outfits with yellow items that say ‘keep dogs away’, ‘anxious’ and ‘don’t touch’.

She said: “Yellow is a way of telling other owners that your dog is not friendly, that it doesn’t want to play and that it should stay away.

“If you had a child who needed space, you wouldn’t think twice about letting people know, right?”

Sarah, 57, from Mortimer, Berks, informs owners about her national #DogsInYellow Day, on March 20, when she explains why puppies wear the color yellow.

A recent PDSA survey found that 45 percent of owners are concerned about walking their pets.

Sarah said: “If your dog is anxious, don’t label him by wearing yellow, show him that you love him.”

BENTLEY was born with severe hip dysplasia, but now he keeps owner Joe Cameron and his colleagues fit by walking.

Joe, owner of holiday rental company Debbie’s Villas in Paddock Wood, Kent, said: “The vet said we could give Bentley a false hip or see if intensive physio and walks could help – and it worked.”

Update, 9-3-24: Nelson Thomas underwent surgery to amputate his foot on Tuesday, March 5. The challenge alum shared post-surgery photos via a slideshow on TikTok days after the procedure, he wrote that he felt “truly blessed.”

The Challenge‘S Nelson Thomas Nearly a year after he was seriously injured in a car accident, he faces another obstacle.

Thomas, 35, announced on Sunday, February 11, that he will undergo surgery to amputate his foot on the first anniversary of the accident.

“March 5, 2023 remains vivid in my memory, a lingering presence in my thoughts,” Thomas wrote via Instagram. “I consciously embrace it as the start of a new chapter. I choose amputation and am determined to recognize March 5 and redefine its meaning in my life.”

He added: “Get ready, amputation world! I’m on my way! I am scheduled for surgery on March 5, 2024.”

Thomas’ post included photos of the crash and its aftermath, along with a recording of him discussing the surgery with his doctor.

“I have to ask myself what kind of life I want to live and what quality of life I want to live,” he said in the clip. “I think I’ve come to terms with it and it’s time.”

The MTV star before shared a video of him working out in the gym. “Let us embrace the challenges, weather the storm and overcome adversity. I won’t run away. I will face my challenges and leave a lasting impact that people will not forget….” he captioned the post.

In March 2023, Thomas was pulled from a burning vehicle by a Minnesota Vikings player KJ Osborn and three other strangers in Austin, Texas. He suffered an ankle injury in the accident and underwent several operations. (We weekly later confirmed that Thomas was charged with a misdemeanor DWI for the incident.)

“The bone is broken again, it’s out of place. It doesn’t cure everything,” Thomas said tearfully in an emotional September 2023 Instagram video. “I have been in pain for the past two weeks, but I thought it was due to my overexertion in physiotherapy and in the gym. I found out that where they had the screws and plates, the bone broke. It didn’t heal.”

Thomas learned from his doctor that his condition was so serious that he had only two choices: amputation or ankle fusion surgery, a procedure that fuses the ankle bone together as one and is often used in arthritis patients, the doctor said. Your Wi-Fi connection affects how well your Amazon Fire TV Stick performs.

If you have a poor Wi-Fi connection, you may find that videos load slowly or not at all, take a long time to download, and dramatically decrease the visual quality of the content.

So improving your Wi-Fi can make your TV viewing experience much better.

One way is to look at the type of Wi-Fi network you are connecting to.

It’s becoming increasingly common for your home Wi-Fi network to actually offer two networks: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

In fact, these will default to showing 2.4GHz and 5GHz in the network names.

But you can go into your Wi-Fi router’s settings to tinker with exactly what these networks look like.

An easy way to check your Wi-Fi settings is to type your router’s IP address (found on the back of the device) into a web browser and press Enter.

A 5GHz network typically delivers much faster internet speeds to your devices, including an Amazon Fire TV.

But 5GHz networks are intended for short distances, while 2.4GHz is better suited for larger-scale internet throughout the home.

“5GHz is a faster band, but it cannot penetrate walls as well as the 2.4GHz band,” Amazon explains in a support note.

“The device connects to the 2.4GHz band by default because it has greater signal strength.”

FEET FIRST

So make sure you’re using the right network for how close your Amazon Fire TV device is to your router.

It may not be easy to move your router or your Amazon Fire TV, but you do have control over the network you connect to.

And if your router is close enough to your Fire TV to support a good 5GHz connection, you’ll want to use that.

“Many people are hindered from accessing Wi-Fi at home solely because of the location of their router,” notes networking company EPB in a memo.

“Wi-Fi signals usually reach about 150 feet or more than 45 meters for a frequency of 2.4 GHz.

“If you use a frequency of 5 GHz, you get a range of about 50 feet or about 15 meters.”

So if your Amazon Fire TV Stick is closer than 50 feet to your router, you may be better off connecting to the 5GHz network.

If it’s much closer – say six meters – or you live in a small apartment, then a 5GHz network will almost certainly be better.

However, 2.4GHz can be a much better choice if you live in a large house where your gadgets are far from the router.

A Dallas woman is fighting for her life after a horrific car crash that also killed her college roommate.

Camryn Herriage, 23, was riding in a car with her college roommate and three other friends on Feb. 11.

Ttheir vehicle was waiting at a red light on Beckley Avenue, where the Woodall Rogers Freeway ends, when a Ford pickup truck crashed into them, causing a chain reaction car crash. Fox4 News reported.

All passengers were rushed to hospital, where HErriage has been in intensive care for the past month on a ventilator due to life-threatening injuries sustained in the fatal crash.

Bystanders reported seeing a woman exit the driver’s side of the truck and flee from the scene on foot “dressed in a little black dress and white club shoes,” according to an arrest affidavit.

Witnesses described the women appearing “extremely drunk.”

The woman who allegedly left was later identified by police as 27-year-old Carmen Guerrero.

Detectives said they found Guerrero’s wallet in the abandoned Ford truck and took her into custody 11 days after the crash.

She now faces multiple charges, including manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. She is being held in the Dallas County Jail.

While Herriage continues to fight for her life in the ICU, her older sister Casie Campanello has not left her side for weeks.

‘Literally: a careless act. It put us in a situation that changed our entire lives,” she said. “We’re very helpless and just staying strong for her, but it’s very hard to watch.”

She added: ‘When she came out of her first operation, the surgeon told us he had told us he had never seen anyone come to hospital with her injury. So she has a purpose.”

Herriage’s best friend and Texas Tech University roommate was tragically killed in the collision.

Sara House, 23, worked as an executive sales associate at Ralph Lauren after graduating from Texas Tech, having studied business, management and marketing and also competing in bikini competitions.

The college roommates were very close and often made TikToks together, which Herriage shared on her profile with 32,000 followers.

Herriage works at a social media management and branding company based in Lubbock, Texas.

She had only recently returned to North Texas after graduating in December.

A FAMILY OF FOUR lives large in a small house, but people have questions about how it all works.

She walked straight from the living room into a bathroom area, complete with a toilet, full shower and washer dryer.

The small house also had a large bedroom, a shared children’s attic, an office, a library nook and a ‘play/guest room’.

The video attracted many viewers who expressed confusion about some of the simple abode.

“I love it, but isn’t there toilet privacy? As in, a door? Doors?” someone asked.

“Pocket door from kitchen and shed door in bedroom. Plenty of privacy,” the family responded.

A pocket door is a sliding door that is usually not visible when it is fully open.

“Is the bathroom between the kitchen and the bedroom?” another asked, and the family confirmed it.

“I love it, but no door for the bathroom?” a third commented.

“I love your house. Often people think they can’t live small, but it is possible. Good luck to you and your family,” another added.

‘That’s nice. Congratulations everyone. Smart move,” someone else said.

Elton John and his husband David Furnish attended the funeral of Kate Garraway's political aide husband Derek Draper on Friday morning.

The Rocket Man hitmaker, 76, walked with the help of a crutch while accompanied by his wife, 61, as they prepared to pay tribute to Derek, who passed away last month aged 56 after a long battle with the coronavirus.

Family and friends gathered at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Primrose Hill for a memorial service. Kate clutched the hands of her two children as they waited for the coffin to arrive outside the church.

Kate's teenage daughter Darcey, 17, was one of six pallbearers as her mother watched. The GMB presenter held her 13-year-old son William's hand tightly as they followed the coffin into the church. Members of his family followed him.

After arriving for the service, Elton paid further tribute to Derek by performing as candles were lit in the church.

When news of his death was announced last month, Elton reached out to Kate in another touching tribute, after supporting the star through his illness.

Kate revealed the heartbreaking news that her husband has passed away after suffering a heart attack following his health scare before Christmas.

Elton wrote on his Instagram stories: 'My heart goes out to Kate, Darcey, William and all the family after Derek's passing. David, the boys and I are thinking of you and sending all our love.”

He also wrote on Kate's original announcement post, affectionately, “I'm so sorry to hear of this news, Kate. Love and thoughts to you and your family x'.

In April, Kate, Derek and their children attended Elton's performance at the O2 Arena, where the hitmaker, 76, dedicated a song to the family. Kate confessed that the outing took months of planning due to Derek's weakened state at the time.

Kate announced the death on Instagram, revealing she was holding his hand as he died in a north London hospital.

Derek was plagued by health problems after contracting Covid in 2020 and suffered a cardiac arrest in December, with Kate spending Christmas in hospital.

In a post on Instagram, she said: 'I'm sad to tell you all that my dear husband Derek has passed away…

'As some of you may know, he has been seriously ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, due to the damage done by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.

“Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I stood by his side and held his hand during the last long hours and when he passed away…

'I have so much more to say, and I will of course do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and make his last moments as comfortable and dignified as possible .

“Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have generously given our family so much support. Rest in peace now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.”

Elton then shared the heartwarming message of love.

After the concert in April, Kate praised a 'supportive' and 'friendly' Elton as he dedicated Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me to Derek during the date of his Elton On His Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

According to Kate, the trip was a major test for the couple, especially for former political lobbyist Derek, who faced devastating health complications after his body was ravaged by the coronavirus three years ago.

She told Smooth Radio: 'Until the last minute I wasn't sure if it would be possible to get Derek there.

It took weeks of planning and just days before it looked like he would be too sick to attend. Even on the road he seemed so weak.”

But the situation quickly changed for the better, she says.

'As soon as we entered the stadium and Elton went on stage, he started crying tears of joy and squeezed my hand so tightly. He refused to wear hearing protectors for an hour so he could hear the music,” she explained.

Kate continued: 'But at one point it seemed like maybe it was all too much for him and he started shaking. His nurses and I took him out of the hallway so he could stretch and relax in the darkness and silence.

'After a while I asked him if it was time to go and he said, “No… I want to go back,” so we gave him earmuffs to reduce the stimulation and brought him back to the concert…

'It must have been fate because that was exactly the moment when Elton suddenly dedicated Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me to Derek and his journey. We were all in tears, the kids, Derek and even the nurses. It was completely unexpected…
