GOOGLE has added a new password security alert that works in real-time to protect user accounts from cybercriminals.

The password improvement is part of a broader security upgrade rolling out first to iPhone and PC users and to Android owners later this month.

Previously, Google only told users if their password was leaked in a data breach.

But now users are getting a change that not only flags compromised passwords, but also passwords that are weak or have been reused.

Passwords are leaked quite regularly during data breaches.

These types of incidents can affect thousands of people at any time.

Just days ago, TV streaming company Roku revealed that more than 15,000 customer accounts have been compromised in two separate cyberattacks since December.

According to Bleeping Computer, the hijacked Roku accounts were sold on the Dark Web for as little as 50 cents each.

It is important to have strong and unique passwords for each of your accounts.

If a password leaked in a breach is used for multiple accounts, those accounts are also at risk.

Google is introducing a broader upgrade to its Safe Browsing standard protection, meaning it can monitor untrustworthy sites for malware in real time.

Previously, Safe Browsing’s default protection checked the sites you visited against a local list on your device that refreshed every 30 to 60 minutes.

But this did not ensure that web surfers were properly protected, as the “average malicious site actually exists for less than 10 minutes,” according to Google.

This will “compare sites in real time against Google’s server-side list of known bad sites” and is expected to block 25 percent more phishing attempts.

MARTIN Lewis and his team have issued an important warning to 200,000 energy customers about two collapsed energy supplies.

In a bizarre turn of events, debt collector Barratt Smith Brown has been accused of sending emails with Michael Jackson’s signature and demanding refunds from defunct energy suppliers.

The emails are addressed to former customers of Igloo Energy and Together Energy and are causing outrage and confusion among recipients.

Igloo Energy went bankrupt in 2021 and its customers switched to E.on Next.

Similarly, when Together Energy went under in 2022, its customers were transferred to British Gas.

However, any debts owed to the bankrupt suppliers were not passed on to the new ones.

As a result, both administrators of the bankrupt supplier engaged Barratt Smith Brown to help identify any outstanding customer debts.

Administrators are allowed to chase debts, but if you haven’t been billed for the energy you used and haven’t paid within 12 months, the debts will be wiped away under Ofgem’s “back-billing” rules.

However, customers have flooded MoneySavingExpert.com with complaints, claiming they are being chased for debts they don’t owe or have already repaid.

Dave Parmenter, a former Igloo Energy customer, has told of his ordeal when he received threatening letters from Barratt Smith Brown despite providing proof of payment.

The 67-year-old from Buckinghamshire first received a letter from Barratt Smith Brown saying he was owed £25.83 in 2022.

When Dave checked to see if the letter was from a legitimate company, he paid the money owed.

However, since then semi-retired Dave says he continues to receive “threatening” correspondence from Barratt Smith Brown claiming he still owes the debt, despite providing proof of payment.

In January 2024, Dave then received an email stating that his details had been passed on to lawyers requesting that proceedings be initiated against him in the District Court.

This email was signed with what appeared to be the signature of the late pop star Michael Jackson.

He said: “It’s very frustrating. I know if it goes to court I’ll have proof that I’ve paid, but it’s the hassle of having to defend yourself over and over again when you shouldn’t have to.”

Questions remain about the extent of the issue of these emails signed by Michael Jackson.

While the company has acknowledged a ‘processing error’ in sending emails with template letters, concerns remain about the ability for affected customers to complain and access redress.

In the meantime, Martin Lewis is warning affected customers to respond to letters Barratt Smith Brown receives.

Failure to do so could affect your credit report.

The lender may even take you to court and ask for a County Court Judgment (CCJ), which will remain on your credit file for six years and can dramatically reduce your ability to borrow money through credit cards and a mortgage.

MSE recommends that affected households email Barratt Smith Brown to dispute the issue at collections_team@thebsbco.com.

You must include one of the following:

• Evidence, such as bank statements showing that you have paid the debt
• A final statement showing that you have no debts
• Invoices showing that you were a customer of another company when the debt was allegedly accrued

Commenting on the issue, consumer champion and personal finance expert Martyn James said: “The fact that liquidators can impose debt collectors on innocent people for energy debts that may not even be correct is a shame.

‘This situation has been known for years and certainly since the massive collapse of energy companies a few years ago.

‘Yet these companies act with impunity and must stop now.

“However, the energy sector must also take responsibility for this situation.

‘If the energy companies that took over customers from bankrupt companies had agreed to transfer the (alleged) debts, then everyone could have complained about disputed bills and gone to the Energy Ombudsman.

“But we are in this situation because that did not happen in all cases.”

Martin Lewis has now formally called on the Energy Secretary to close the “extraordinary gap” in complaints rights for affected consumers.

His letter to MP Claire Coutinho said: “There appears to be no route to redress, complaints or alternative dispute resolution for some customers of bankrupt energy suppliers, who are now being pursued by debt collectors.”

This is because customers who are dissatisfied with their treatment cannot go to the Energy Ombudsman if their supplier has gone bankrupt.

Affected customers will also not be able to take their complaints to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) or the Financial Ombudsman, as they can only accept complaints about credit agreements, not utility bills.

TikTok videos recommending airline passengers put their seat belts on their ankles have become a trend, some of which have racked up hundreds of thousands of views and likes.

But a flight attendant said this advice ‘is the last’ [cabin crew] want to see it go viral” – because it is a “dangerous” tip.

TikTokers who have touted the alleged joy of fastening the seatbelt at the bottom of the legs during flights include the 26-year-old New York City-based influencer Lauren Wolfe.

The content creator posted a clip where she has her feet on the seat and the seat belt around her ankles with the caption: ‘to the girl who said you should put your seat belt around your ankles instead of around your waist to be more comfortable are…I owe you my life’.

It was viewed more than 193,000 times and attracted comments such as ‘OMG, so excited to try this’ and ‘this looks so fun’.

Another TikToker, who posts using the handle ‘helens_princessdiaries‘, published a similar video, entitled ‘best flight hack ever’. This received 1,650 likes.

TikToker ‘mychellelynda’ followed along with her single seat belt video collecting 401,000 likes.

But Jay Robert, a flight attendant who runs the popular Fly Guy’s Cabin Crew Lounge network, told MailOnline Travel: ‘The thing about seat belts is that they actually play a very important role in air travel safety, for example by preventing your head from hitting the ceiling.

“In theory it may seem like an innocent travel tip, but from the perspective of safety professionals who have seen the injuries resulting from an aircraft hitting unexpected clear air turbulence, [wearing seatbelts around ankles] is dangerous and can cause serious damage to your head, neck and spine.

“This dangerous advice is the last thing we want to go viral. I think most cabin crew, myself included, if we saw you sleeping that well and the seat belt sign was on, we would wake you up and tell you to wear the seat belt properly.

“Turbulence is no joke and can occur without notice and can come very hard.”

Anyone can play the piano, as Les Dawson used to say. It takes talent to play it badly.

Junior vet Richard Carmody (James Anthony-Rose) was bashing Tchaikovsky’s March Of The Toy Soldiers in three different keys at once, requiring both concentration and cloth ears, during the Christmas special of All Creatures Great And Small (Ch5).

“Will you stop that damn racket,” howled Siegried (Sam West, always fantastic). I felt like he was giving voice to the feelings of an entire nation that has been subjected to Jingle Bell Rock and Step Into Christmas for far too many weeks now.

All Creatures can claim to be the most diligently nostalgic show on TV. Even more so than Call The Midwife, it takes effort to recreate both the atmosphere and details of its time. Not only the clothing and cars, but also the tableware, decor, lighting and the carefully stratified social strata are reminiscent of the 1930s.

This makes it all the more striking when 21st century views impose themselves on the story. While her husband James was a trainee officer at a wartime RAF base, Helen Herriot (Rachel Shenton) didn’t expect alcohol.

This is the awkward moment the Prince and Princess of Wales appear to have accidentally ignored their royal guests as they arrived for the Royal Variety Performance.

During the conversation, Rose tells the couple that Daphne is now 95 – to which William responds: ‘Unbelievable. That’s incredible. That is amazing.’

As William and Daphne discuss how she likes to stay mobile, the Princess of Wales is seen smiling at Rose, with her back to Crown Princess Victoria.

In the background, the Swedish royal family can be seen looking awkwardly around the room and smiling as they wait for William and Kate to continue.

Kate doesn’t seem to be in a hurry and then says, ‘Hello Daphne, nice to see you. I love your outfit!’

The princess then places a hand on Daphne’s arm as they discuss her outfit: a white silk floral dress with red fluffy sleeves.

After being told that Rose had designed it especially for her mother, Kate replied: ‘Ah, absolutely not! She looks fantastic.’

The event was in aid of the Royal Variety Charity, which supports members of the entertainment industry with a national grant scheme, to help those who have worked professionally in the entertainment industry during this very difficult economic climate.

‘Hi Nanna’ has in the near past emerged as a fun family entertainer amidst so many violent and action films.
