Doug Blevins, who successfully coached college and NFL kickers like Adam Vinatieri and Justin Tucker despite never playing football because he had cerebral palsy, died Sunday in Johnson City, eastern Tennessee. He was 60.

His son, Roman, said the cause of death in a hospital was complications of esophageal cancer.

Doug was fascinated by football from an early age, and increasingly by the nuances of kicking. He watched games and instructional videos, read books and began corresponding with former Dallas Cowboys kicking coach Ben Agajanian in high school. Doug analyzed the video Agajanian sent him and then used the information to improve the kicking of his high school team, where he coached.

“Being handicapped, I knew I would never play a down,” Blevins told The Los Angeles Times in 2000. “But I was focused on this goal: making it to the National Football League.”

Blevins, who instructed kickers from his motorized wheelchair, taught himself the mechanics of place-kicking, punting and kickoffs. He analyzed hip rotations, leg swings and toe angles; he talked to kickers about where they could ideally plant their foot before kicking a field goal and how to get their body into the end zone.

His most famous students included Vinatieri, who became one the NFL’s career scoring leader with the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts, and kicked two Super Bowl-winning field goals; Tucker of the Baltimore Ravens, who holds the league record for highest percentage of field goals made; and Olindo Mare, the Miami Dolphins all-time goal scorer and field goal leader.

In the mid-1990s, news of Blevins’ reputation as a guru began to spread. Through an administrator at a community college where he had coached, he came to the attention of Dick Steinberg, the general manager of the New York Jets.

Blevins provided Steinberg with scouting reports on the Jets’ kickers in 1993, and the following season he worked as the team’s kicking consultant, a major shift in his career.

“This is an uphill battle,” Blevins told Sports Illustrated for a profile of him in 2004, noting that it was especially difficult because he was not a former player and even more challenging because of his disability. “I needed walking, talking resumes. If I found guys who became successful kickers in the NFL, I would always have a place in this league.

In 1995, he began a five-year consulting stint with the World League of American Football (later known as NFL Europe), where his duties included teaching football players how to be NFL-style kickers and selecting the kickers for the teams.

Between 1995 and 1996, he also spent several months in Abingdon, Virginia, living with Vinatieri, an undrafted kicker from South Dakota State University, where he refined his place-kicking skills.

As a result of their collaboration, Vinatieri had become a more consistent kicker, shooting footballs from his powerful right foot. Blevins signed him to the Amsterdam Admirals of the World League in 1996, and the Patriots signed him later that year. His career included kicking two Super Bowl-winning field goals for the Patriots.

“Doug has the perfect kick in mind,” Vinatieri told Sports Illustrated. “He watches you and thinks about what to do.”

“Without him I wouldn’t be here,” Vinatieri added.

William Douglas Blevins was born on August 3, 1963 in Abingdon. His father, Willis, was an engineer. His mother, Linda (LaFon) Blevins, was a nurse who encouraged Doug to pursue whatever he wanted.

In the early 1980s, Blevins was a student assistant coach under Johnny Majors while attending the University of Tennessee. After transferring to East Tennessee State University, in Johnson City, he held the same position, working for head coach Mike Ayers, and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice sciences in 1988.

He soon began organizing instructional camps in the southeastern states – which he did for years – and teaching kickers. From 1992 to 1995, he was the special teams coordinator and kicking coach at Abingdon High School.

In 1997, while still working for the World League, \Mr. Blevins was hired by Jimmy Johnson, the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, as a kicking coach. He helped Mare win the No. 1 job by slowing down his kick.

Johnson said Blevins’ single-minded focus helped the kickers.

“A lot of kickers just come off and get out of rhythm; A lot can happen to them if someone doesn’t coach them every kick,” Johnson said in a phone interview. “Doug knew this was his role and mapped out all his kicks, and Mare became one of the best Dolphins kickers ever.”

After six years with the Dolphins, Blevins became an advisor to the Minnesota Vikings in 2004. He helped improve Aaron Elling’s yardage and hangtime on kickoffs.

During the team’s training camp that year, Elling told The Minneapolis Star Tribune that Blevins “can see every mechanical thing you do on a kick at once.”

The Vikings job was Blevins’ last for an NFL team. But he continued to work with kickers individually, coaching at Emory & Henry College, in Emory, Va., and at East Tennessee State. He had agreed to join the staff at Tusculum University in Greeneville, Tennessee, before he was diagnosed with cancer.

Billy Taylor, Tusculum’s new head coach, was a player at East Tennessee State when Blevins was a student assistant coach.

“Doug drove into Coach Ayers’ office and said, ‘Coach, I’ve had cerebral palsy my whole life, but I’m a linebacker at heart,’” Taylor said by phone, recalling the conversation. “‘I love football and I want to be part of this.'”

In addition to his son, Roman, from his first marriage to Nenita Colon, which ended in divorce, Blevins is also survived by his parents; his daughter, Sarah Blevins, from his marriage to Nancy Duque, which also ended in divorce; his brother, Greg LaFon; his grandmother, Kathleen Hensley; and his stepmother, Carmen Blevins.

Blevins said his disability did not diminish his passion for coaching players in a specialty he knew so well.

‘Professional football is a results-oriented business’ he told Abilities.com, a website for the disabled. “Once people saw that I could create the results they wanted and achieve the right level of success, I was welcomed into the arena.”

Kyle Walker got some extra support on Sunday afternoon as estranged wife Annie Kilner watched Manchester City thrash their bitter rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.

The pregnant mother-of-three was joined by the couple’s young children, Roman, 11, Riaan, seven, and five-year-old Reign ahead of the match, an emphatic 3-1 win for a home side that also included her husband.

Kilner’s appearance at the Etihad hinted at a possible olive branch for Walker, who has been living outside their sprawling Prestbury mansion after admitting fathering a child out of wedlock with influencer Lauryn Goodman.

Goodman had already welcomed a son with the embattled footballer during a previous divorce from Kilner in 2020.

Paloma Faith has opened up about her split from husband Leyman Lahcine and how it inspired her new album, The Glorification of Sadness.

The singer, 42, married the French artist, 36, in 2017 and welcomed two daughters together before splitting in 2022 after nine years together.

Appearing on BBC Breakfast on Thursday, Paloma said she was 'devastated' by the split and that her record was about capturing her grief.

She said: 'It's my sixth album. It's all about illustrating the stages of grief I went through when I broke up with the father of my children.

The voices of 'My Children' are included on the album. I feel devastated by the situation, but it describes those stages of grief, so to speak. It's been a little over two years now and it's been a labor of love.'

Appearing on BBC Breakfast on Thursday, Paloma said she was “devastated” by the split and that her record was about capturing her grief.

Paloma admitted that writing the album was helpful for post-breakup recovery, but talking about it again in interviews opened old wounds.

She said: 'As I was writing it I felt it was very therapeutic to do it. But coming back and doing interviews feels like kicking off the scab every time. As if you are experiencing all those feelings again.

'Fortunately, 50 percent of marriages end in divorce, so there are a lot of people in the country who will understand. People relate to it and it's like you're putting into words things that aren't necessarily said often in the context of popular music.”

Speaking about her decision to bare her soul in history, Paloma said she wanted to open up to the “invisible labor” of women, especially mothers, due to societal expectations.

She said: 'I think it's a taboo subject and that's not great. Many parents have come to me because of the songs about guilt and the invisible labor women undergo.

“There's a song called Bad Woman that's all about the expectations of women in society. It's quite a feminist record and by feminist I don't just mean for women, I mean to open people's minds because feminism affects all genders. Bad Women is about rejecting social pressure on women.

Paloma, whose two girls are aged seven and three, said: 'I actually think it's quite important to raise two daughters of my own.

“My three-year-old asks me to sing [Bad Woman] to her every night before she goes to sleep and she tells everyone she is a bad woman. And I'm very much in favor of her wanting to become one, because I think society relies too much on women.

Speaking about her decision to bare her soul in history, Paloma said she wanted to open up to the “invisible labor” of women, especially mothers, due to societal expectations.

'We're working, we're mothering, we always have to be nice no matter the amount of stress, and when we're not, people say, 'She's a bit reserved.'

“And I don't necessarily feel like there's pressure on men at the same level and in the same way. So I actually feel a bit cheated by the patriarchy.

'It is an invisible mental burden that mothers in particular have. There's so much pressure, you know we have to be young, we have to be nice, we have to be mothers, we have to work – it's like, oh my god, this is a lot.'

Host Naga Munchetty asked the Only Love Can Hurt Like This hitmaker if she had thought about what Leyman thought about Paloma being so open on album, and what her children would think when they grew up.

Paloma responded, “Well, I feel like if you listen to the album, it's very focused on my internal experience. It's not a finger-pointing album, it's not a revenge album.

'It' is all about my inner experience and in a way I think it's quite positive because they've listened to it and have a bit more empathy.'

She insisted: 'I'm not an angry person. I realized in a very hyper-aware way that it takes two people to start a relationship, just as it takes two people to end it.

“And it's more about me accepting responsibility on my part than me saying you did this or that. It's not a public blame game.”

However, she revealed that Leyman had not listened to the record and did not want to hear it in full, with Paloma only playing him one song.

Paloma insisted it is 'not a revenge album' or a 'public blame game', but also revealed that Leyman had not listened to the record and did not want to hear it in full (pictured in 2015)

She said: 'My partner and I actually have a very good relationship. Obviously he's creative, so he's pretty empathetic to everything, but he hasn't really listened to the record. He doesn't really want to, he says, “Play me whatever parts you want me to hear.”

'I played Divorce for him because for me it's the only one that's really about him. All the others are about my own experience and I was like, you have to hear this one.”

Paloma became emotional, adding, “And it's the one with our children's voices on it that gets me every time I hear it, I just feel so choked up. I'm about to get better.'

It comes after Paloma previously admitted she had a 'nervous breakdown' after the break-up, saying it was 'the worst thing that's happened to me'.

She appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday and currently discussed her relationship with Leyman.

She revealed: 'We're really good. We are doing very well and I think it is as good as it can be. I don't pretend to be like Gwyneth Paltrow, I don't consciously disconnect.

“Sometimes it's horrible, but we're navigating it and I think we're doing a lot better than some married couples.”

“My observation is that the reason our relationship is so good now is because I don't expect anything from him and vice versa.”

As for Leyman's feelings about speaking so openly about their split, Paloma said, “He knows what he signed up for.”

She added: “He was a little disappointed when he saw the end of my How You Leave A Man video. He said, “Why am I in the trunk?” It's a metaphor baby!

'He was a bit offended. But he knows now that we are together forever – it means that the fact that our love came together and made these children is absolutely eternal, it is infinite.

'We are in a different situation. I dedicated the album to him and my children to say this is infinite love.”

Neither is expected to give in to the demand, led by ex-Fifa presidential candidate Prince Ali of Jordan.

The head of the Jordan FA and chairman of the West Asian Football Federation said in an open letter: “We call on FIFA, the football confederations and their member associations to join us against the atrocities.

“That means we must condemn the murder of innocent civilians. . . and taking a united front that isolates the Israeli FA from all football-related activities until the aggression ceases.”

Israel finished third in Group I, two points behind Switzerland with 15.

Alon Hazan's team won the last match of the group stage 2-0 against Andorra thanks to an own goal by Joan Cervos and a goal by Gadi Kinda.

The Israelis face Iceland in a 'home' play-off match, having won their UEFA Nations League group two years ago.

However, due to the ongoing war with Hamas, the match will take place in Budapest.

The winner will then face Bosnia in Sarajevo or another tie on neutral ground against Ukraine, who are playing in Poland due to the Russian invasion of their country.

The Euro 2024 finals start on June 14 and the tournament runs until July 14 later this year.

Germany will play the opening match against Scotland in Munich, as the host country.

Italy will be hoping to retain the crown after winning the 2021 tournament by beating England in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate has previously described the scenes in Israel and Gaza as “disturbing”.

He said: 'In my lifetime it is one of the most complex situations in the world. And I think everyone is struggling with the best way to deal with that.

“I don't know what it's like to be in the shoes of people on both sides of that conflict.”

Mia Goth has been charged with deliberately kicking a background actor in the head on the set of MaXXXine.

Actor James Hunter filed a lawsuit against the 30-year-old Goth on Friday, January 12, claiming he suffered a concussion while filming the A24 movie in April 2023, according to multiple media outlets.

Hunter was hired to play 'Dead Parisioner' Ti West's horror film, in which Goth (who plays lead actress Maxine) was instructed to step over his body as he lay on the ground. He claims the actress was 'warned to be careful' with her steps before she 'deliberately and deliberately' attacked Hunter by kicking him in the head with the side of her boot.

“The kick to the head caused [Hunter] immediately suffered from headaches and stiffness in his neck,” according to the court documents, obtained by Deadline, read. “No one provided medical assistance to the plaintiff, and no medical assistance was provided. [Director] West ordered filming to continue. After a handful of takes, the scene was completed.

While Hollywood may seem all glitz and glamor at first glance, the industry has seen its fair share of scandals over the years. Shortly afterwards, Weinstein stood trial and did so […]

Hunter claimed that Goth's kick was intended to deliberately “punish” him for telling a crew member that she was running “dangerously close” to him in an earlier recording.

Madonna reportedly protested being sent to hospital, where she was reportedly “intubated” with a serious bacterial infection after she “became unresponsive” over the weekend.

According to TMZthe pop icon, 64 — who was photographed in NYC a day before she collapsed — was “metaphorically “kicking and screaming” in fear that her 35-city Celebration tour would be postponed.

She spent several days in ICU and was discharged on Thursday, but the paper claims Madonna has been too ill to get out of bed and has been vomiting uncontrollably.

An earlier report said she had “had a mild fever for a month” before being admitted to hospital.

They claim that Madonna “mostly ignored her symptoms and was never checked by a doctor because she was focused on her upcoming tour,” which her longtime manager confirmed has been postponed due to her health issues.

“We’ve been told her doctors believe the unreported fever was a sign of the infection, which was worsening because it was left untreated,” TMZ claims, adding that the singer’s medical team – as well as “those around her” are concerned being that she will “go against the doctor’s orders and push to start her tour as soon as possible.”

Madonna has certainly followed a rigorous rehearsal schedule leading up to her tour, with her former backup dancer, Jose Xtravaganza, telling DailyMail.com that the mother-of-six has been rehearsing six days a week for months now. to ensure that every element of the Celebration shows is perfect.

“Rehearsals are six days a week from what I hear… the only day off is Sunday,” said Jose – who choreographed Madonna’s iconic Vogue music video.

“I think it’s going to be a great show, full of costumes. There is a lot of dancing. The dance group is big. When we went on tour, there were seven of us. I think there are at least somewhere between 15 and 20 now.

“They are trained in different areas of dance and different types of artistic expression that will be showcased in the show. I believe there will be many martial arts, such as boxing. She really likes boxing and things like that. So I think she’s going to revisit a lot of those things that she’s shown in the past. It is certainly not to be missed.’

In April, an insider revealed to DailyMail.com that Madonna had “driven everyone up against the wall with her perfectionism” leading up to the highly anticipated tour, saying, “It may be her last tour so she wants to make it perfect.” She is in incredible shape and her body is sick.

This is her labor of love. Her perfectionism drives everyone to the wall, but she doesn’t care. The crew is working their ass off because everyone wants to make her happy.

“She has no problem firing someone just like that.”

Madonna has yet to publicly comment on her hospitalization — which was revealed to the world in an Instagram post on Wednesday by her longtime manager Guy Oseary.

In a statement shared on her own account, Oseary – who has worked with the singer for years – confirmed that she had been diagnosed with a “serious bacterial infection” and had been taken to the ICU for treatment.

“On Saturday, June 24, Madonna contracted a serious bacterial infection that led to a several-day stay in ICU,” he wrote.

“Her health is improving, but she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.”

Madonna then returned home on Thursday, with sources reporting she is “feeling better” – however, it remains unclear when her 35-city tour will now kick off as she was due to kick off in Vancouver on July 15.

While she now appears to be on the mend, a family member admitted to DailyMail.com on Wednesday that Madonna’s family had “prepared for the worst” during her hospitalization and were unsure if she would make it.

“For the past few days, no one really knew which way this was going to go and her family prepared for the worst,” the relative said.

“That’s why it was kept secret since Saturday. Everyone believed we could lose her and that’s the reality of the situation.”

Sources also revealed to DailyMail.com that Madonna’s management team held a crisis meeting on Zoom one day after she was hospitalized, fearing she wouldn’t survive.

It was during this meeting that the group – many of whom had worked with Madonna for decades – made the decision to postpone her highly anticipated 40th anniversary tour and plans were set in motion soon after.

A source said: ‘The simple fact is that nobody knew at this point how it would all turn out. Madonna was very ill and the worst is always feared in these situations.

“Realizing that someone is in intensive care is scary, so there was a lot of worry and upset, these people had been her good friends for a while. But they had to be fair to fans, and with the tour getting closer and closer, they made the decision to postpone almost immediately, so plans got underway.

“Even if she recovered quickly, she would be very behind on her rehearsal schedule and no one wanted to pressure her.”

Madonna is a mother of six: Lourdes, 26; Rocco, 22; David, 17; Grace, 17; and 10-year-old twins Stella and Estere.
