And it’s not a departure from the past, as the NFL has long avoided paying the Super Bowl halftime performers and instead traded in publicity.

Shortly after Usher (full name: Usher Raymond IV) was announced as the 2024 halftime show performer, sources exclusively told DailyMail.com that he was “not the first choice” to headline the show, after other stars including Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and Lizzo all turned down the NFL.

Usher may have gotten the best of them, as he was still able to make a significant amount of money from the Super Bowl thanks to his dedicated fan base.

That’s because his older fans — as well as the new ones he converts during the halftime show — will likely stream and download his music in huge numbers, while others will buy physical CDs and vinyl LPs of his albums in the days leading up to and following the Super Dish.

Other artists have gotten that bump in post-Super Bowl streaming, including 2020 headliners Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

According to the streaming service Spotify, streams of Jennifer’s music increased by a whopping 335 percent after the show, while Shakira’s music was streamed another 230 percent.

The two also did well when it came to downloads, which are more lucrative per song. The songs they played during the halftime show were downloaded 16,000 times on Super Bowl Sunday, compared to just over 1,000 downloads the day before, according to Billboard.

That streaming bump was felt even to a lesser extent by Bad Bunny and J Balvin, who were special guests during the halftime show, and by Demi Lovato, who sang the Star-Spangled Banner before the game.

According to Spotify, all three artists are experiencing double-digit increases in their streaming numbers.

Other former Super Bowl performers, including Rihanna and Lady Gaga, have even bigger streaming bumps than Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

So even if Usher doesn’t make a dime from the NFL, he could still come out of the night with a significant cash infusion.

The NFL hasn’t been shy about sharing its policy of not paying performers in the past.

In 2016, a spokesperson for the football organization said Forbes: ‘We don’t pay the artists.’

However, they did add that the NFL will cover the artists’ “expenses and production costs,” so Usher likely won’t have to use any of his own money to put on the show.

Usher will take the stage after the NFL’s failure to attract more popular performers.

In late September, an NFL source revealed to DailyMail.com that Taylor Swift had been approached “a handful of times” to headline the halftime show, but turned it down because she was “too busy.”

But Taylor, who just scored the biggest debut of her career despite releasing a re-recorded version of an older album, doesn’t necessarily need an influx of new listeners or publicity.

Another NFL source said Harry Style was being considered as a possible headliner for a show that could include a highly anticipated One Direction reunion.

However, it is unclear whether these considerations went far enough to approach Styles about the possibility.

Despite not being the NFL’s first draft pick, a source close to Usher told DailyMail.com that he planned to “prove all the haters wrong” by putting in the “best performance ever.”

“Usher knows he wasn’t the first choice, but he’s here to prove he’s the right choice,” they said.

“He was able to reinvent himself and prove to people that he is a great artist with his recent Vegas residency. He knows he has a great catalog, and his halftime show will be one of the best.

“He has no problem proving himself and when people think he’s going to be bad, he looks forward to proving all the haters wrong,” they continued.

“This opportunity is incredible, and Usher is looking forward to making it an unforgettable experience,” the source added. “It may seem like his back is against the wall and people aren’t that excited, but he wants to prove everyone wrong.”

The insider also noted that Usher was “a little disappointed” that the announcement of his appearance was “overshadowed” by the then-recent news that Taylor Swift was dating football star Travis Kelce.

The source noted that Usher would likely get some support during the Super Bowl halftime show with guests, though they didn’t say who would join him on stage.

Who are the rumored headliners?

Madonna, Dua Lipa and Coldplay are the first headliners expected to take to the stage next year, The Mail on Sunday exclusively revealed.

After months of discussion, the three iconic singers will reportedly appear on the Pyramid Stage, although the official lineup has not yet been revealed.

Organizers are said to be ‘excited’ by the line-up, which will mark the first time in Glastonbury’s history that two female artists will headline.

A festival insider said: ‘It’s the dream line-up, a brilliant mix of different music and different atmospheres. Then of course you have Madonna on the last night, which will be epic.’

It will be the first time Madonna, 65, has performed at the festival, which is being held at Worthy Farm, Somerset. When 28-year-old Dua performs, it will be her first headlining performance.

Cold play

Coldplay will reportedly headline Saturday.

Coldplay has headlined four times before: in 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2016.

Glastonbury bosses have been accused of choosing too many male acts as headliners. Last year’s lineup was all male, with Arctic Monkeys, Guns N’ Roses and Sir Elton John taking the top spots.

Speaking last month, organizer Emily Eavis, daughter of Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis, revealed that a large team of American stars, believed to be Madonna, had contacted her and said she was free.

She said: ‘2024 is still kind of up in the air, and I thought it was starting to take shape, and last week I just got a phone call, and this is what happens if you wait a little bit longer, because a lot of times we’re fully booked from July.

“This year we’re keeping it a little longer and last week I got a call from a really big American artist saying this person is going to be back next year, and I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is incredible.’ Thank God we had the chance.’

Dua Lipa

British singing sensation Dua will reportedly be Friday’s top act, although the official line-up has not yet been confirmed.

Earlier this year, Dua was embroiled in controversy after failing to join Sir Elton John on the Glastonbury stage for their duet Cold Heart.

Fans claimed there was a falling out between the two, although Dua insisted she was just working in New York.

Emily previously said about the lack of female headliners: ‘I’ve always been very passionate about gender differences [on festival line-ups] and I think our problem really was that I had been so outspoken about it that a year of no women kind of pissed people off – or some people.

“And we had a female – she pulled out and we replaced them with Guns N’ Roses. But everyone knows it’s at the top of my list.

‘It’s difficult with female artists because there aren’t enough headliners. But we also create them. We put the bands and female artists on smaller stages and let them come through all the time. And who knows? Next year we might get two. And I can definitely say that the Legend is female.”

When can I get a ticket?

This year, anyone wanting to attend the festival must first pre-register to get a ticket – via their website.

Fans can purchase tickets – including coach travel – through Glastonbury’s partnership with ticket operator on Thursday, November 16 at 6pm See Tickets.

Those who do not wish to travel can purchase a general admission ticket on Sunday, November 19 at 9am.

Tickets were scheduled to go on sale on November 2, but were postponed for two weeks, just hours before the price was due to increase.

The highly anticipated sale was postponed after some customers failed to realize their registration had expired or been deleted earlier this month.

Glastonbury has limited the number of tickets per transaction to six.

How much do tickets cost?

Ticket prices for Glastonbury 2024 have yet to be announced, but in 2023 a ticket for the full weekend was £335 plus a £5 additional booking fee – so the price next year will likely be similar (if not more).

You can pay a £50 deposit to secure your ticket and then pay the remainder in installments until April 2024, when the remaining balance is due.

The festival also offers the opportunity to purchase a bus ticket to get to the famous Worthy Farm. This ticket usually costs between £40 and £150 depending on your departure point.
