A controversial debate broke out on British show Good Morning Britain today when the program hosted a debate on whether it is okay to marry for money.

The conversation comes after a survey of 2,000 people, in which one in eight admitted they had financial regrets and wished they had a wealthier spouse.

“Meanwhile, the hashtag ‘how to marry rich’ currently has 3.9 million views on TikTok, so is it right to marry for money?,” the show asked.

The show, presented by Ed Balls and Susanna Reid, hosted money broadcaster Danni Nicholls, who is married to footballer Dean Holden, and who said: ‘It’s smart to know someone who will give you financial security’.

And according to the program, “that was part of her husband’s appeal when they were dating.”

Announcer Danni Nicholls (pictured) thinks it’s a good idea to marry for money and finds people who have the courage to earn a good salary attractive

She took on businesswoman Caroline Stanbury, who said money should not influence how you choose your partner.

Explaining her position, Danni said: “As controversial as this may seem at first glance, you have to look at these things. You have to look at people’s prospects.

‘It’s not necessarily about how big their bank account is. I mean, statistically apparently…men who make a lot of…money [on their own] who have not inherited money may be risk takers, and so are more likely to actually lose the money.

‘So at some point they are more likely to go bankrupt.

“The thing is, though, if someone is willing to get up and out of bed, and they fight and are driven, I find that very attractive.”

When asked why it’s not sexy if someone is rich, Caroline replied: ‘It’s not not sexy.

“I’m just saying it shouldn’t be the most important factor. And I think [Danni] I just put it out there – it’s like I’m not saying, “You’re advocating dating and marrying men on benefits and sitting at home doing absolutely nothing.”

The debate on Good Morning Britain raised some interesting points about whether you should marry for money or not

The debate on Good Morning Britain raised some interesting points about whether you should marry for money or not

‘If you go to work, you want your husband to go to work too.

“But I mean, I never asked the guy how much he’s worth or what he makes, and I don’t care because I own my own money.”

Susanna then asked, ‘Caroline, people marry for looks, they marry for a sense of humor. Why is money different?’

She replied, “I just don’t think money creates stability.

Furthermore, Caroline said: ‘I come from kind of a rich background and I know a lot of rich people [who have] made money, lost money, [and] are not stable because of money.

“And so just because you’re married to it doesn’t mean you’re going to end up with it.

“I also say that unless the guy literally signs it and puts it in your bank account, it’s not your money.

The vast majority of media users in society believed that getting married just for money is wrong, and many believe that marriage should be about love

The vast majority of media users in society believed that getting married just for money is wrong, and many believe that marriage should be about love

“There are many people who divorce and still walk away with nothing.”

When the program on

One commenter said: ‘Marriage should be about love and partnership, not financial gain. Encouraging people to marry for money perpetuates harmful stereotypes and undermines the value of real relationships.”

Another added: ‘And that’s why I’m not getting married until I find a millionaire. No, if you really love someone, it shouldn’t be about money.’

And a third wrote: ‘It’s not right to marry for money but to say there’s no harm in trying to find someone you love who happens to be rich.’

Fans of Netflix's One Day have jokingly thanked the book's original author David Nicholls for 'making the family cry' after it was revealed he wrote the screenplay for the penultimate episode.

The streaming giant revealed on X, formerly Twitter, that Nicholls, who wrote the novel in 2009, had helmed the 13th installment, leaving fans heartbroken.

As fans reached the final parts of the love story between university friends Emma (Ambika Mod) and Dexter (Leo Woodall), they took to social media in tears saying they will 'never get more'. about' the end.

The thirteenth episode sees the couple, who have been dating for three years after circling the idea of romance for more than a decade, argue when Emma expresses her frustration at having trouble conceiving.

They arrange to meet later in the day for a house viewing while they look for a space suitable for a large family – but on the way to the viewing Emma is knocked off her bike and tragically dies .

The penultimate episode of Netflix's One Day, which left viewers 'emotionally destroyed', was written by the novel's author David Nicholls.

Now Netflix has revealed that it was the original author, David Nicholls, who helped bring the heartbreaking episode to life.

The streaming service's UK and Irish account tweeted: “Fun fact: Episode 13 of #OneDayNetflix (yes, that episode) was written by the original author.”

It added a quote from Nicholls himself, who said: 'The great gift was having the actors in their places, watching them and hearing their voices and intonations – an amalgamation of writing for Em and Dex and Ambika and Leo. Just bliss.”

Reacting to the revelation, fans praised the book's original author for writing an episode so heartbreaking it left them in a “puddle of tears.”

One person joked: 'Well I'm emotionally devastated so I'd say you did a great job.'

Another said: 'I hope David is willing to pay my therapy bills because after episode 13 I was a puddle of tears!'

“I felt so anxious watching that whole episode. It was brilliantly done. The last one though is the one that really broke me,” one person wrote, to which Nicholls himself replied: “Yes, 14 is great. Nicole [Taylor, the series’ head writer] I think I've written something great.'

Viewers of the series took to X, formerly Twitter, to joke that Nicholls' writing had left them 'emotionally destroyed'

Viewers praised the 'beautiful' episode and joked that Nicholls was 'to blame' for leaving them in tears.

One joked: “Thanks for making my whole family cry, I really appreciate it!”

The series follows the friendship between Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, revisiting them on St Swithin's Day, July 15, every year from 1988 to 2007.

They meet for the first time at their graduation party at the University of Edinburgh and spend the night together – but do not have sex.

The pair decide to become friends and remain incredibly close, but as the years pass, viewers desperately want the characters to realize they are madly in love and get together forever.

Viewers were left devastated in the 13th episode when Emma died suddenly, three years after the couple finally started dating – and in the 14th and final episode, Dexter struggles with his grief.

Ahead of the series' release, Nicholls revealed his writing process for the 2009 novel in The Sunday times.

He revealed that he was at a point in his career where he had 'stumbled as a screenwriter' and some of his series were not renewed, and this led him to explore fiction.

But after writing two novels, Starter for Ten and The Understudy, he wasn't sure where to go when exploring his third novel.

Inspiration struck after he was given the opportunity to adapt Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles – a tragic tale of fate in which heartbreaking events seem to be written in the stars for the eponymous character, leaving the reader wondering: 'if only'.

He revealed that he is “proud and grateful” for the novel's reception and is aware that it is the most famous of all six of his books.

“When people occasionally say, 'I enjoyed your book,' I know which book they mean,” he said.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Nicholls also said that he never wanted to write the screenplay for the entire series.

'I spent so much time on it. “It felt like it needed a new set of eyes, but it was bliss,” he said.

The hugely popular 25-year-old was a key part of Nicholls' all-conquering team at Ditcheat.

The 14-time champion trainer has revealed the tragedy was the hardest thing he has ever had to deal with.

Harry Cobden, also 25, looked skyward as he entered the winners' box after a rousing win over Fire Flyer at Taunton yesterday. He dug deep to grab Secret Squirrel by the neck.

Cobden said: “I would like to say a special word for Keagan Kirkby. He rode that horse every day, so that was for him. He deserved that.”

Nicholls said: “He rode Afadil every day and the last thing he said to me on Friday morning was boss, this will win tomorrow and he was right.

'He rode Fire Flyer every day and Blueking D'Oroux every day.

“He was passionate about his horses and his work. He was basically passionate about everything. He was a sweet boy.

'He was one of the genuine people in life and you wouldn't meet a nicer man. I know everyone always says things like that afterwards, but he was such a nice guy that he would do anything for you.

“He worked hard and had a very good heart.

“It's sad and accidents happen, but he was so enthusiastic about competing in point-to-point races. It's incredibly sad for his family and the whole team here.

“It was the hardest thing I've had to deal with in my career. It was half an hour before the last race in Musselburgh and I told my fate not to tell Harry who should drive.

'It wasn't about the news that Keagan had had an accident, it was about Keagan falling and he's dead.

“We had all the things happening with Hermes Allen the day before. People say they're just animals, but to us they're not, but that pales in comparison to what happened to Keagan.

'The only good thing that has happened to us in the last few days is that the boys are getting Caldwell Potter.

“I know if Keagan was still there he would have been excited to see him. He probably would have been the first to say I would boss him around.

“I've never had to deal with anything like this before and I've always been afraid of it. It was so hard to come to terms with it and the staff on Monday were all shocked.

“I had them all in the office and Clifford Baker and I had them all in the office and we had a chat with them.

“They were all absolutely devastated and crying their eyes out. Hopefully we can all support each other and get through this together.

“Fire Flyer was our first winner since this happened.

“It was poetic justice in many ways and we were able to dedicate that winner to him, and his owner, Mr Geoghegan, donated his prize money to the fund they are raising for his funeral.”

Fire Flyer owner Michael Geoghegan donated his winnings from the race to a JustGiving page set up in Kirkby's honour.

The fund was set up to support Kirkby's young family in paying for his funeral and had raised almost £30,000 last night.

Jockeys took part in a minute's silence before racing and wore black armbands all day.

An air ambulance was also called, but was unable to save him.

The terrible news has sent shockwaves through the sport.

Kirkby, 25, worked for champion trainer Paul Nicholls as a member of the stable staff and was nominated for an award at the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards earlier this year.

A heartbroken Nicholls posted on X: 'Life is so hard sometimes, the winners are completely insignificant compared to what happened today.

“Unfortunately, Keagan Kirby, one of our best, hard-working guys, lost his life today while driving from point to point.

“Everyone at team Ditcheat is shocked. Thoughts with all his friends and family.

“He was passionate about his work and his driving style and rode Afadil every day.

“The last thing he said to me on Friday was 'boss Afadil will win tomorrow'. How right he was. RIP Keag, we will all miss you terribly.”

A statement from the Injured Jockeys' Fund said: “It is with great sadness that we have to report that West Country point-to-point rider, Keagan Kirkby, 25, has died after a fall at Charing point-to-point in Knows. Today.

“His horse, locally trained, ran through the wing of a fence on the second circuit of the final race.

“The on-course medical team attended immediately and despite additional support from a 999 Helicopter Emergency Services Crew he could not be saved.

“Keagan was a respected member of the Paul Nicholls team, having joined us in 2019 and being named Employee of the Month in December 2021.

“He was shortlisted for the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards in the Rider/Groom category 2024.

“We kindly ask that everyone respects the privacy of Keagan's family and the Paul Nicholls Racing team at this tragic time.”

The cast also includes Poldark’s Eleanor Tomlinson, who will play Dex’s wife Sylvie.

The cast is completed by Essie Davis (Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries), Tim McInnerny (Blackadder), Toby Stephens (Die Another Day) and Joely Richardson (Lady Chatterley).

The decades-long love story is based on David Nicholls’ 2009 novel, which has sold more than five million copies worldwide.

It is not the first time that the story of Emma and Dexter has appeared on the cinema. A film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess was released in 2011, but received mixed reviews.

Jan Moir, writing for the Daily Mail at the time, described the film as “as fake as Anne Hathaway’s accent.”

While Nicholls wrote the screenplay for the 2011 film, Scottish screenwriter Nicole Taylor led the writing team for the Netflix adaptation.

Taylor won a BAFTA for Best Writer for her 2017 BBC series Three Girls, about the Rochdale grooming scandal.

Nicholls is on board as executive producer.

Lead star Ambika told this earlier RadioTimes.com that the series can spend “more time” on the decades-spanning book, with each episode dedicated to each year of the friends’ lives.

‘I really enjoyed the film, but I think a lot of people felt – and I agree – that an hour and a half film is usually not enough to dedicate to this epic novel that spans twenty years.’ explained.

“So hopefully in our series we can cover more ground and dig into the story with more detail.”

“I really like the way our writers are going about it, and hopefully people can just see more of the book in the series.”
