One of America's best-known television journalists has expressed her shock at what has become a regular part of Australian life.

Megyn Kelly, who has hosted shows on Fox News and NBC, has brought Sky News Australia host Paul Murray onto her SiriusXM show to explain Australia's handling of migrants trying to reach the country by boat.

America is in the midst of an immigration crisis, with 300,000 migrants – the equivalent of the population of Pittsburgh – illegally crossing the southern border in December.

Kelly seemed surprised at the comparison to US border problems when she said: “Australia doesn't mess around when it comes to illegal immigration.

“One of the things that got me interested in this was in 2022, when they kept out Novak Djokovic, who wasn't going to get the title. [Covid] vaccine.

“And then it just led to this in-depth look.” Australia in general is no stranger to saying, “No, stay out of it.” They don't really care.'

She asked Murray how Australia came to have such a strict and rigid immigration line.

“About 20 years ago there was a big difference between Australians believing, 'Oh, we should be compassionate and anyone who can kind of drift here should be able to become a citizen,'” he said.

“But the reality was that people died on that journey. Most likely the path would go from Indonesia. Hop on a boat, pay $10,000 to a human smuggler and then you'll eventually float towards Australia.

'You're getting close enough here [and it was]”Aha, thanks for the effort, you're in.”

The Sky News presenter said the deaths of 'thousands of people' were driving change, with the Australian government saying: “Yes, we are an island, but… you have to come through the front door.”

“So, simply put, if you came here illegally, our position was we would turn the boat around and send you back.”

Murray then explained the turn-back policy, under which boats can be escorted by the Australian Navy back to the port from which they left.

“If you happened to end up here, you went to an offshore processing center, and simply put, you stayed there until you… decided to go home.”

Kelly told Murray “The main goal of the tough policy was deterrence, and therein lies, I think, the most important lesson for America.”

“Because being perceived as inhumane is part of the point,” she said.

Murray agreed, telling her, “The whole idea is that there is a front door. And just like you don't cross the border when you go to Disney, you don't cross the border when it comes to immigration.”

He added that there are many legal ways to migrate to Australia: “If you fill out the paperwork, you're so great [you will] If you can become a citizen, it will happen.

“If you have something for our country, that's fantastic, but nothing else.”

He added: “The most important message I want to convey to Americans is that by having a border, you have to feel that you have a country worth protecting, and you have to draw a line saying it's a privilege to be here is not a right granted if you can find a way to get here.”

Kelly then read part of an article from Diplomat magazine, which said: “Australia is the only country to require immigration detention for all unlawful arrivals.”

“It's like if you come here illegally, you're subject to mandatory detention, including those seeking protection as refugees,” Kelly said.

“Australia has one of the most punitive forced migration policies in the world…Australia effectively punishes those who flee to the country for protection.

“This is someone who doesn't like the policy. But I'll tell you, most Americans would read this right now, Paul, and say, 'Good.'”

Murray said, “The people who show up [in Australia] They are not refugees, but people trying to shop for better access to social services.

'Because the reality… is that while a lot of people would like to think that Australia is some sort of big version of Texas, the reality is that we are Canada or the UK in terms of social security, but with a lot more desert. '

He also offered advice on what the US could learn from Australia's immigration policies.

'It's very simple. If you end up in Mexico and are trying to get somewhere further down the map, guess what: Mexico is the safe place to go…

“So America has every right to say, 'Well, just leave, you can go back to the nearest safe country.'

Murray said people trying to get to Australia by boat were deterred because they would be sent to Nauru, “which is an island country in the west – our government has given a lot of money to that country – or you move to a place where Papua -called New Guinea, which lies just to the north.'

“The whole point is you're never going to physically come here… It's the Australian Defense Force that's in charge of this and that's probably what I would recommend you need in the US,” Murray said.

Kelly put this into context for her followers by saying: 'It's actually not just that you're not coming to Australia, but we're also going to send you to another little island where we're paying a lot of money to process it. you people.

“And you really won't be able to enjoy the fruits of the Australian life while we decide what to do with you.”

Murray claimed that '80 percent' of Australians support the offshore processing system and then gave more advice to the US.

“If you have a better social security system for the people who arrived illegally than for the people who, for whatever reason, end up on the streets of San Francisco, you have a problem.

“Now you'd think that the social justice warriors would see this, but instead they have this kind of infantile idea that every person who crosses the border is on their knees and they're doing it so that they can have a better life for their children.” can build. family.

“But the reality is that there are a lot of people who know that there is a better life in the United States, with greater protections in the United States and even a minimum wage in the United States that is better than the life they have in the United States.” States have. other parts of Latin America, which means they are economic migrants.”

“They are not refugees, they are economic asylum seekers,” he said.

*Sinner 2-3 Medvedev

A nice grab from Sinner, who might have only had one or two butterflies when losing the opening point in this game.

Four consecutive points mean he has half the deficit in this set.

The last serving along the T is what we have come to expect from the Italian. Medvedev is an excellent returner and knows how to make contact but sends it on for a long time.

Sinner 1-3 Medvedev*

A love grab. Emphatically from Russian.

That included a neat volley at the net, with a good range of attacking shots on display early on.

* Sinner 1-2 Medvedev

BREAK OF SERVICE!

Daniil Medvedev breaks in the third game – and it's only the third time in this tournament that Sinner has lost serve!

Medvedev races to a 0-40 lead, benefits from two second serves and is extremely aggressive on both.

Sinner reduces the deficit making the score 15-40, but can't do anything as he stands at the net and faces a Medvedev forehand that Sinner reaches but can't answer across the net.

Sinner 1-1 Medvedev*

From a strong position, with two aces and winning the first long rally of the match, Medvedev made a double fault at 40-15 to let Sinner in.

He also finds the net on the next point and takes us to deuce in his first service game of the match.

Sinner's forehand clips the top of the net at deuce, but remains perfectly upright for Medvedev's forehand, which he whips away for a winner.

Then Sinner is taken out by a ferocious serve to his side, and he can't return. Serve held.

Jannik Sinner may be a poster boy for Gucci, but the Italian has proven on the tennis court that he has the substance to back up the style.

The 22-year-old ended Novak Djokovic's Australian Open dominance with a stunning semi-final victory on Friday and is now within touching distance of his first Grand Slam.

Sinner inflicted the all-conquering Djokovic's first defeat in Melbourne since 2018, proving that the rising tennis generation actually has the game and the bottle to beat the old guard.

A win in Sunday's final would take the multi-talented Sinner to a whole new level, with many years ahead of him to cement his place in tennis history.

Sinner combines tennis skills and looks that have earned him collaborations with the luxury fashion house Gucci and the iconic Italian car brand Ferrari.

He is in a relationship with stunning model and influencer Maria Braccini, but chooses to keep their relationship very private.

She has a closed Instagram profile and Sinner rarely posts photos of them together, both preferring private life, something that may be tested as his face grows.

Despite his young years, Sinner already has an estimated new value of $12 million [£9.46m] and this weekend's Australian Open success will earn him another $2.1 million [£1.65m] in prize money.

The victory will also delight Sinner's devoted fan base, known as the 'Carota Boys' or 'Carrot Boys' after his red hair.

Born in August 2001 in San Candido, a small town in northern Italy near the Austrian border, Sinner grew up in modest surroundings with parents Hanspeter and Siglinde, and was a ski champion as a boy.

He has a brother, Mark, but details about the family are scarce. They are rarely seen during his matches and his social media is dominated by endorsement deals and professional images from the field.

Sinner shared a rare photo of him and his brother in 2019, but fans find the family's dynamics mysterious, even though they are widely seen as hard-working people with strong moral values.

Sinner, who now lives in Monte Carlo, has a similar private relationship with his girlfriend Braccini.

The model, who has 103,000 followers on her private Instagram page, has been described as 'introverted' and 'fiercely private', often keeping a low profile around the bright lights of Sinner's burgeoning career.

Braccini watched him at Wimbledon, but managed to avoid the cameras, something Sinner seems happy about.

But back to Sinner's early life, and things could have turned out so differently if patience had been applied to his skiing career.

'Skiing is a very common sport to practice where I am. There are a lot of ski slopes literally right outside my front door,” Sinner once told ATPtour.com.

'I remember the first time I went skiing. My brother had some lessons and I saw him and I wanted to go, but my mother told me, “Not today.”

“I kept crying to her and asking, and then she said, 'Okay, let's do this.' They expected me to go one day and then I would go home. But I stayed all day until they closed the slopes. After that I went every day and loved it.”

Sinner was a natural talent, far superior to many children his age, and he soon became one of the best junior skiers in Italy.

Skiing was number 1. Football was number 2. Tennis was number 3.

Trophies soon came rolling in, competition after competition, but at the age of 13, Sinner, who had dropped football at the time, began to feel physically inferior on the slopes.

“One year I won a lot of trophies skiing, but the next year I felt the others were so much stronger physically,” he added.

'I went out twice and didn't feel comfortable anymore. I really loved tennis because everything came from my side. I had my head under control, which is very difficult when skiing.'

One of his early ski coaches praised his “mountain mentality,” which he has since been able to apply to tennis. But now he was all about tennis.

Sinner, wise beyond his years, chose to leave home at the age of 13 to really make a success of tennis. He left friends and family behind and left, determined to turn pro.

'When I left home at the age of thirteen, I dreamed of becoming a professional. Seven years later I am in the top ten,” he reflected in 2021.

Sinner made a bold fashion choice for his opening match at Wimbledon last year when he walked onto Center Court wearing a luxurious, custom-made Gucci duffel bag.

Riccardo Piatti's academy in Bordighera, Italy, was where Sinner would end up and their relationship was almost paternal in nature.

Claudio Pistolesi, the 1985 world number 1 junior, once told ATPTour.com that Sinner's unconventional route to the Tour, via the ski slopes, helped – not hindered him.

“Like Lorenzo Sonego, who played football until he was 14, he broke all the rules you follow from an academy perspective because he played another sport at a good level,” Pistolesi said.

“He brings some lateral skills to tennis by skiing his movements around the court, and he automatically steps into the ball.”

His rise continued to where the Association of Tennis Professionals named him Newcomer of the Year in 2019, before becoming the first player born in the 2000s to break the top 10 in 2021.

Last year he reached his first Slam semi-final at Wimbledon, but was defeated by Djokovic in straight sets.

The player nicknamed 'The Fox' caused a stir at SW19 by walking onto the pitch with a personalized Gucci bag.

In addition to posing for Gucci photo shoots, Sinner has lucrative collaborations with Nike, Head, Rolex, Gucci, Lavazza, Alfa Romeo, Technogym and Parmigiano Reggiano.

Continuing the theme of Italian cool, Sinner recently got behind the wheel of sleek Ferrari sports cars during a visit to the brand's famous base in Maranello.

Since he speaks Italian, German and English, it's no wonder brands consider him highly marketable.

This time, however, the tables were turned for Djokovic as Sinner triumphed in four thrilling sets and even managed to overcome the disappointment of a missed match point in the third.

Now the immensely talented Sinner has a first Slam success within reach.

What happened today?

We saw some great women's tennis today.

First, Qinwen Zheng booked her place in the final against Dayana Yastremska.

And then Aryna Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff to advance to the showpiece event.

Coming soon: men's semi-finals

We have two man clashes to look forward to later.

In the first semi-final, Novak Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner.

And that will be followed by Daniil Medvedev against Alexander Zverev.

The lucky two will then face each other in Sunday's final.

Qinwen Zheng gets a lot of praise

Former world number one Justin Henin praised Zheng Qinwen after she reached the Australian Open final.

She said: “It's fantastic to see Zheng making so much progress. Finally she reaches a first Grand Slam final and we can see her joy. We know how hard it is to be favorites and we could feel the tension a bit yesterday and today.

'Last year she played only one quarter-final at the US Open. It's not easy being the favorite like she was today and she made it. So it's a fantastic story at this Australian Open.

“The fact [coach] Carlos Rodriguez has worked with her on the forehand. He tries to develop her game and give her as many weapons as possible. She doesn't have to stay on the baseline and gives more volume in the forehand, which you don't see that often on the women's tour.

“She has worked a lot on her coordination and being able to move well. She hasn't played many junior tournaments yet and has taken the time to work and develop herself. You feel the stability of her team and she plays a different game than the other players.

“The feeling will be so different when you walk across the field [in the final]. You have to visualize yourself on the field and this will be special. She needs to keep the same routine and it's good that she keeps her feet on the ground. She has to stay in her bubble and try to enjoy this moment because it is so special.”

Qinwen Zheng 'believes in fate'

On the 10th anniversary of Li Na's second Grand Slam title at the 2014 Australian Open, Zheng Qinwen followed in her footsteps by becoming the second Chinese player in history to reach a major final.

The No. 12 seed defeated qualifier Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 6-4 to claim the battle between two Grand Slam semifinalists for the first time in 1 hour and 42 minutes.

After her win, she said: “I believe in fate.

“If everything works well, I believe in fate.

'But if fate isn't on my side, I don't believe in that at all. It just depends on where fate goes.”

Gauff responds to Sabalenka's growl

Coco Gauff refused to blame Aryna Sabalenka's snarl after the defending champion returned to the Australian Open final.

And the American claimed the world number 2 is not like an unnamed fellow star who turns up the volume on big points in matches.

When asked if the growling affected her, Gauff replied: “No, I don't think so. I don't notice it, you know, when I feel like it's at least consistent with her, so it doesn't bother me.

“I mean, I've played against a player in the past where the grunt wasn't consistent, where they grunted longer on 30-All or deuce point on purpose. If it's consistent, I can't really comment on it.

'I don't think you're allowed to growl while the person is hitting. Like I said, I didn't notice it. When you play her, you know she's going to do that. I don't think it's a tactic or anything. I think that's just the way she plays tennis.

“It didn't bother me. I don't understand how anyone could be bothered by it. But yeah, that doesn't bother me because it's consistent. If she did it extensively on certain balls, I'd be like, 'Okay, it's ridiculous.' No, I think it's just her. It is well. There have been other grunters in the past. I don't care.”

Vegemite has playfully exposed the questionable eating habits of American tennis star Taylor Fritz's influencer girlfriend after she devoured a whole bite of the iconic Aussie spread on Instagram.

Morgan Riddle was a standout at Melbourne Park and kept many fans entertained with her eye-catching courtside outfits.

Last week she attracted attention after betting her boyfriend that she would eat a 'jar of Vegemite' if he won his match against seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Fritz did his part by beating the 2023 Australian Open finalist in four sets.

A hilarious video uploaded to Instagram followed, showing Riddle struggling to eat a spoonful of Vegemite – with no bread or butter in sight.

Seconds later, Riddle gagged on the unique taste and ran off-screen to spit it out.

“That was disgusting,” she said after coming back on camera to sip kombucha.

“If someone had to eat a whole jar of that, no.”

In a lighthearted message, the iconic Aussie spread has hit back at the American influencer, questioning why Riddle is making the rookie mistake of eating Vegemite alone.

'If you're going to do it, at least do it right. Australia, thoughts?' their social media team posted Tuesday evening.

She quickly responded, posting: “Sourdough bread with mounds of buttah?”

Riddle got the ball rolling last weekend after she shared the bet with her more than 220,000 Instagram followers.

“If @taylor_fritz wins again I'll eat a jar of Vegemite [Instagram] live,” she captioned a post in which she posed outside Rod Laver Arena with a red Chanel bag.

Hours later, Fritz – whose tournament ended after he lost to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals on Tuesday – was awarded a big pot from the national spread courtside.

Riddle showed she's a good sport when she was filmed in the stands with a grin on her face, clearly accepting defeat.

  • The Australian was unhappy with a rule change for this year’s competition
  • He launched an outburst at the referee as fans returned to their seats

Jordan Thompson has labeled the Australian Open ‘the worst tournament ever’ after the hometown star was left stunned by a new rule change that has angered a number of players.

In his first-round match against compatriot Aleksandar Vukic, Thompson prepared to take a 3-1 lead in the second set as fans continued to enter Court 3.

New rules for the 2024 tournament will allow spectators to enter stadiums between matches, not only when changing ends, but it has also caused problems as there is a shorter break between normal matches compared to changing ends .

As a result, Thompson was left standing and waiting for the fans to find their seats, and after asking the referee to address the deceased fans, he was stunned to hear of the rule change.

“You’re kidding, really? Oh my God,” he said. ‘This is the worst tournament ever.’

“It’s just not smart,” Thompson added at the end of his service game, as the referee explained the new rules to him.

Thompson leads the round one match two sets to one, 3-6 7-6(3) 6-2.

The Australian was not the only player dissatisfied with the new rule. Reigning champion Novak Djokovic was also stunned to see fans pouring onto the court at an unexpected moment.

The 36-year-old signaled a serve Open organizers about a new rule that will allow fans to move around the stadium between matches, instead of the traditional change of ends.

Djokovic said he was unaware of the new rule and said it had a negative impact on his match and not the positive impact tournament organizers were hoping for.

“I didn’t know anything about that new policy or rule,” he said.

“Look, I mean, I understand the motive behind it is to improve the fan experience, right? We play for fans. We want fans to have a great, exciting experience on the pitch.

‘It’s difficult, I must say. I understand that and support it to a certain extent, but at the same time I have been used to a certain atmosphere my whole career, my whole life. When that changes, it gets a little messy and distracting.

“Today we lost quite a bit of time when they allowed people to come to their seats even though it wasn’t a changeover. My opponent waited for them to sit down. It dragged a lot.

“I don’t know if this is really the best rule, but I understand that it’s probably better from a tournament and fan perspective because they don’t want to wait. They want to come out and enjoy every point.

“In a way, I’m a bit divided between the two.”

  • He mentioned Novak Djokovic's match against Dino Prizmic
  • Fans were blown away by Kyrgios' insight

Nick Kyrgios made an impressive start to his Eurosport commentary gig, with fans hooked on the Australian's every word as Novak Djokovic took on Dino Prizmic.

Kyrgios took to the Rod Laver Arena booth on Sunday night to share his insights as Djokovic went to defend his Australian Open title in Melbourne.

The 28-year-old, who is out of the tournament due to injury, explained exactly what it feels like to face the all-conquering world number 1 after being defeated by Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon final.

And while Kyrgios' on-pitch antics have been divisive over the years, fans were uproarious with praise during the Canberra-born star's comments on Sunday.

Kyrgios joked about his latest defeat in London, acknowledged his feud with Boris Becker and revealed how he would try to get into Djokovic's head this tournament.

'I don't think the wrist is a big problem, but [I would try to seek] some advantage as a player,” he said of Djokovic's wrist problems before the tournament.

“If I know his wrist is sore, when I change the ends I'm going to ask him, 'How's that wrist?' if he misses a ball, something like that.

'Try to see if I can get into his head, but it's impossible to get into his head. I thought I had done it at Wimbledon when I won the first set. But he is not the greatest of all time for nothing. He's so calm.'

And fans were impressed by Kyrgios' comments.

“Really enjoying Nick Kyrgio's commentary on day 1,” one fan said on Twitter.

“So refreshing to hear honest, unbiased commentary,” another fan wrote. “And there are some interesting conversations too.”

“Nick Lester and Nick Kyrgios are the commentary duo I never knew we needed,” said a third fan. 'Love it.'

Another fan wrote: 'He has a distinctive sounding voice, he speaks with conviction and has the knowledge. Excellent combination for this task.'

Fans can watch Kyrgios on a unique livestream offered by Discovery+ called “In the Booth With Nick Kyrgios.”
