The official cause of death of legendary comedian Richard Lewis was revealed on Friday when his death certificate was made public.

Lewis died Tuesday evening at the age of 76 after reportedly suffering a heart attack while battling Parkinson’s disease.

Three days later a copy of his death certificate was obtained by The explosion listed the cause of death as “cardiac arrest.”

Parkinson’s disease, which prompted Lewis to retire after his diagnosis in April 2023, was noted as his secondary cause of death.

The news emerged after Lewis’ widow shared her appreciation for the numerous “loving tributes” from his fans in a social media post on Thursday.

Joyce Lapinsky, who tied the knot with the stand-up star in 2005, shared a post via her late husband’s account on X (formerly Twitter).

It arrived just hours after the Curb Your Enthusiasm star reportedly died of a heart attack at home at the age of 76.

‘This is Joyce, Richard’s wife. Thank you for your loving tribute,” she wrote. “He would be extremely excited and moved, just like me.”

Many of Lewis’s fans sought to make donations in his honor as stories of his kindness and positive impact on friends like Jamie Lee Curtis, so his widow shared a way they could honor his life and work.

“In response to many questions, I know Richard would appreciate donations in his memory to the Los Angeles-based charity comedygivesback.com or a charity of your choice,” she added.

Comedy Gives Back is a registered charity that provides financial assistance to struggling comedians, including payments to cover insurance premiums and rent.

It also advertises that it helps comedians find and pay for mental health treatment, and offers a service that provides an alternative to health insurance for low-income, uninsured comedians.

Comedians also have access to addiction treatment and the charity boats that offer weekly 12-step meetings in Los Angeles, as well as holding gatherings and comedy festivals for comedians on the road.

The organization held an important place for Lewis, who is currently listed as a member of the ‘talent board’, along with Caroline Rhea and Howie Mandel.

Following Lapinsky’s post, the charity was flooded with donations in honor of the Latin comedian.

Lewis had been open over the years about his decades-long battle with alcohol and drug addiction.

He credited 1994 as the year he finally got sober after being hospitalized due to a cocaine overdose.

That was also the year his friend John Candy died of a heart attack at the age of 43 after struggling with drug and alcohol abuse for years.

Lewis co-starred with Candy in his last film, the Western comedy Wagons East, which required a significant rewrite of the script and had to rely on a body double for scenes not filmed before Candy’s death during production.

While fans of Lewis’ sketch comedy or his dozens of appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm were likely familiar with his jokes about his romantic life and fear of intimacy, he was dating or married to Lapinsky for much of that time.

The future couple was introduced in 1998 when they both attended an album release party for Ringo Starr.

In a 2010 interview with Paul Freeman, Lewis revealed that a mutual friend had tried to set the two together years earlier when he starred with Jamie Lee Curtis in the sitcom Anything But Love, but Lapinsky had turned them down because she thought he ‘crazy’ at the time.

But after working on his addiction issues, she was more receptive during their 1998 meeting.

“I suspected she was Italian and 33,” Lewis recalled of their first important meeting. “She said, ‘Let’s nip this in the bud. I’m 42. I’m a Jew from Minnesota. So if you’re worried about that… And if kids are important…’ sense it.”

It was a chance meeting for Lewis, as he said he could “finally commit to someone.”

“I met the right woman at the right time,” he added.

The couple dated for several more years and only became engaged in 2004 after Lewis took Lapinsky to one of his therapy sessions, during which he said his therapist shouted, “This is as good as it gets!” after sharing some of his concerns about the relationship.

The lovebirds married in 2005 and Lapinsky was with Lewis until the end.

Before his death, Lewis changed his home’s default mortgage to a lease transfer trust deed, which would make it easier for her to continue living in their home without him, according to the New York Post.

Curb Your Enthusiasm star and creator Larry David paid tribute to his late friend Richard Lewis on Wednesday.

Lewis death was first announced by Bette Midler on X (formerly Twitter), before it was subsequently confirmed that he had died at 76 by Variety.

David, also 76, called his fellow comedian ‘like a brother’ in a moving tribute shared in a statement by HBO.

‘Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,’ he said.

Lewis is credited as appearing in 41 of the 114 episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm aired to date, including the 2000 special that created the framework for the series, according to IMDb.

True to life, the comedian played one of the curmudgeonly David’s best friends, though the two often ended up at each other’s throats for comic effect.

‘He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.’

Fans were heartbroken after Lewis announced in 2021 that he wouldn’t be returning to Curb for its eleventh season after he recovered from multiple surgeries, though he later changed course and appeared in a single scene, before returning more substantially to the ongoing twelfth and final season.

Lewis had already been diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the time he said he would be stepping away from David’s show, though he wouldn’t share the information publicly until April 2023.

Larry David’s longtime Curb costar Cheryl Hines — who initially played his wife, and later his ex-wife — also expressed her love for Lewis in a moving caption accompanying a photo of the two beaming next to each other.

‘When I was young I had the biggest crush on Richard Lewis,’ she admitted. ‘He was the funniest person on stage and the most handsome comedian. Then when I was cast on Curb Your Enthusiasm, I got to work with him and it was a dream come true.

‘Through the years I learned who Richard really was and the gifts he gave,’ Hines continued. ‘Yes, he was the comedian I fell in love with, but he was also one of the most loving people I know.

‘He would take time to tell the people he loved what they meant to him — especially in recent years. In between takes on Curb, he would tell me how special I was to him and how much he loved me.

‘To be loved by Richard Lewis. A true gift,’ she added. ‘I love you Richard.’

Although the two funny men never shared the screen for a major project, they are both considered two of the major stand-up comedians of the past century.

Others, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Jimmy Kimmel, Michael McKean, Albert Brooks and Paul Feig were just some of the actors and comedians who shared their love and appreciation for Lewis on social media.

In her caption, she praised her late costar and cited him as the reason she was eventually able to get sober.

‘I’ve just read that my friend Richard Lewis has died. I remember exactly where I was when I saw a billboard of him about a stand up special on Sunset Boulevard when we were casting the ABC pilot Anything But Love and asked the casting people to bring him in to audition to play my best friend/maybe boyfriend, Marty Gold,’ she wrote, admitting that she found him ‘handsome.’

‘He made me laugh, which is the one thing that a strong, capable woman, can’t really do for herself. He got the part when I snort laughed when he mispronounced the word Bundt cake,’ she continued. ‘He blew everyone else away.

She said they were supposed to be part of a love triangle, but their stellar chemistry mad producers retool the show with just the two as the leads.

Despite the fact that he would hide his lines everywhere on set — including on Curtis’ face, she said Lewis ‘was a wonderful actor.’

‘Richard’s last text to me, was hoping that I could convince ABC/Disney to put out another boxed set of episodes of the show,’ she revealed, before admitting: ‘He also is the reason I am sober.’

The extreme act of kindness came after Perry – alongside Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston – negotiated a groundbreaking $1 million per episode check for the 1990s sitcom.

The cast of Friends all agreed that they would walk away from NBC if they weren’t all compensated equally.

Perry’s donation to the Parkinson’s Foundation did not come out of the blue, as the two Canadian-American actors spent a significant amount of time in each other’s company over the years, bonding over their shared love of ice hockey.

The Back to the Future actor labeled Perry — who often publicly bragged about Fox’s talents — as a “funny guy” and joked that he was “glad” he “had an impact on him.”

Fox’s heartwarming confession comes after Perry passed away on October 28, 2023.

He was discovered in the hot tub of his Los Angeles home and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park on November 3.

His death certificate, obtained by The explosionshows that his official cause of death is being postponed pending toxicology reports, which could take weeks to determine.

The actor leaves behind the Matthew Perry Foundation, an organization created to help people “struggling with the disease of addiction.”

Those in recovery will be guided by Perry’s own experiences and his passion to positively impact as many lives as possible.

The Friends star detailed his own struggles with addiction in his 2022 autobiography: Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.

While endorsing his novel in an interview with Tom Power, the late actor raved about fellow stage actor Michael J Fox.

“I was young, I’d done a couple of school plays, and Michael J. Fox was it, man,” a smitten Perry said, according to UsWeekly.

“When I was in ninth grade, Michael J. Fox had just done Back to the Future, and smoke was coming out of my ears, I was so jealous of this man.”

Perry praised Fox for having the number one show – Family Ties – and the number one movie of the time:

“It was huge and I don’t know anyone else who has done that but me.”

Justin Long and Kate Bosworth put their chemistry on display for all to see as they lend their support to The Michael J Fox Foundation on Saturday evening.

The famous couple – who just tied the knot last May – were among the stars who attended the organization’s annual gala, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Cure Parkinson’s, on Cipriani South Street in New York City.

While enjoying a night out together, Long, 45, was absolutely beaming with joy next to his wife, wearing a black suit and white shirt.

The pair couldn’t keep their hands off each other as they worked the cameras on the red carpet.

Equally radiant, Bosworth, 40, showed off her fabulous figure in a sleeveless black dress with silver trim and a matching floral emblem along the bust.

The Blue Crush actress perfectly matched this eye-catching number by wearing black and silver open-toed heels and carrying a small clutch bag that sparkled under the glare of the bright camera lights.

While Long had his dark brown hair styled short, over his ears and parted on the left side, his new bride had her long blonde locks pulled back into a tight bun with a center parting.

At one point, the hot and heavy duo was joined on the red carpet by the event’s namesake, Michael J. Fox, 62, who still looks youthful dressed in a plaid blazer with black pants and sneakers.

His wife Tracy Pollan, 63, also joined in the fun and snuggled up to her husband of 35 years, who looked cool and stylish in a black sequin blazer, white shirt and black trousers.

The romantic sparks between Long and Bosworth reportedly started when they shot an unknown project together in 2021, but rumors of the relationship only started going public in March 2022 when they were spotted together in Los Angeles, according to People.

The couple eventually married last May at The Rockaway Hotel in New York’s Queens, in what was described as “improvised and casual.”

Marketed as ‘an evening of comedy and music benefiting the Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Research’, Saturday event was hosted by Denis Leary and also featured comedy from Ronny Chieng, Dulce Sloan and George Wallace.

The music included the talents of Bob Weir, best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead, Jason Isbell and Steve Jordan’s Super Soul Banned.

Founded in 2000, the foundation not only focuses on finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease, but also focuses on funding research and ensuring the development of improved therapies for people with Parkinson’s.

Since its inception 23 years ago, the MJFF has funded an astonishing $1.5 billion in high-impact research programs, while the Gala has helped raise more than $112 million of that amount, with $4 million coming from 2022 alone . the organisation proudly boasts.

‘We act with focus and determination in everything we do. We will not stop until a cure is found,” the MJFF website reads.

Fox made his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease public in 1991, when he was just 29 years old, but continued to act until he finally retired in 2020 due to his symptoms, which included tremors, movement disorders, coordination and muscle stiffness.

The Back To The Future star was 29 in 1991 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and made the information public in 1998.

“I obviously love Tracy and she’s a great person and has been through a lot,” Fox said. “I realize she has a life separate from the fact that I have Parkinson’s, and I’m Alex Keaton or Marty McFly, she’s a person. I think that’s why it went well.’

Fox said of their marriage: ‘She had told me by saying, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health. She was able to guide me through it and go through it with me. And she has been doing that for 35 years.’

The couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary last July and took to Instagram to commemorate the occasion.

Fox, who also played Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties, captioned a carousel of shots: “35 years of laughing, living, listening and loving you @tracy.pollan.” Thanks for everything. Forever yours, Mike.”

Pollan said of her: ’35 years!!! Happy birthday my love. Here’s to many more glorious adventures together. I couldn’t love you more.’

Fox told CBS that despite his health problems, he is doing his best to remain optimistic.

“The positivity is really genuine,” he said. “I really feel it, and it’s real. But it’s hard-fought and hard-won, I would say.”

“We can find ways to give ourselves a break, to give ourselves credit for getting through life on life’s terms,” he said. “And to do that, you have to stop and say, ‘It’s not that bad; it’s not that bad’… they say the absence of fear is faith.’

He launched in the fall of 2000 The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Researchwhich ‘is committed to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for people living with Parkinson’s today.’

According to the foundation, it has raised more than $1.75 billion for charity.

“Parkinson’s patients are the experts of what we have,” Fox said in a statement on the foundation’s website. ‘As patients we have a responsibility to share our experiences; what works for us, what we respond to, what we can contribute to research.’

Fox was honored last year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with an honorary Academy Award, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for his efforts to find a cure.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years, according to the NHS website.

What are the symptoms?

The NHS says there are three main symptoms, including shaking or shaking, slowness of movement and muscle stiffness.

Other symptoms include balance problems, loss of smell, nerve pain, excessive sweating and dizziness.

Some people may also experience sleep deprivation, excessive saliva production, and difficulty swallowing, causing malnutrition and dehydration.

What are the first signs?

Symptoms can begin gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one part of the body.

In the early stages, people may show little or no expression and may not wave their arms when they walk.

Speech may also become soft or slurred, with the condition worsening over time.

What are the causes?

Some scientists believe that a combination of genetic and environmental factors causes Parkinson’s disease.

It occurs after a person experiences a loss of nerve cells in part of their brain.

However, it is not known why the loss of nerve cells associated with the condition occurs, but research is ongoing into possible causes.

Scientists say the genetic factor can increase a person’s risk of developing the disease and therefore run in families.

Other factors attributed to causing the condition include environmental issues such as pollution, although such links are inconclusive, the NHS says.

How is it diagnosed?

No test can tell if a person has the disease, but doctors can make a diagnosis based on symptoms, medical history, and physical exam.

A specialist will ask the person to write or draw, walk or speak to check for general signs of the condition.

They can even check for difficulty making facial expressions and slowness of limb movements.

How many people are affected?

There are approximately 145,000 people living with Parkinson’s disease in the UK, according to the Parkinson’s UK charity.

What happens when someone is diagnosed?

It is a legal requirement to contact the DVLA, according to the charity, as a person diagnosed must have a medical or driving assessment.

The organization also advises people to contact insurers and inquire about available financial support.

People are also encouraged to exercise more.

Can it be treated?

While there is no cure, a number of treatments are available to help reduce symptoms.

The main remedies are medicines, exercise, therapy and surgery, which can help people in different ways.

What medications are available and what are the side effects?

Medication can be helpful in improving the main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as trembling and movement problems.

There are three main types that are commonly used: levodopa, dopamine agonist, or a MAO-B inhibitor. Each can affect people in different ways.

The drugs have some side effects, including impulsive and compulsive behaviors, hallucinations, trouble sleeping, and blood pressure changes.

What therapy is available?

There are a variety of therapies available to people with Parkinson’s through the NHS.

Among them are physical therapy to relieve muscle stiffness, occupational therapy to help with daily tasks, and speech and language coaching.

Does this change the way you live?

Most people’s life expectancy won’t change much, although more advanced symptoms can lead to increased disability and poor health.

It can also cause some cognitive problems and changes in mood and mental health.

Those with Parkinson’s are encouraged to exercise more often, with scientists saying 2.5 hours of exercise a week is enough to slow the progression of symptoms.
