A young Australian fed up with social media has put up a poster of himself across Sydney in the hope of making ‘real friends’.

The poster was spotted on walls around Sydney, including City Hall, Chinatown and Redfern, and was the brainchild of 18-year-old Cooper.

Cooper told Daily Mail Australia he was confronted with the idea earlier this month while scrolling through his social media accounts at 1.30am.

‘I was just up and scrolling on my phone. I thought, ‘Man, this is so boring. I wish I was doing something else,'” Cooper said.

‘So I decided to make that poster. I told myself, if I still think it’s a good idea in the morning, I’ll post it.’

Cooper, 18, made a poster (pictured) to ‘make real friends’ and pasted 35 copies on the walls around City Hall, Chinatown and the inner Sydney suburb of Redfern

The full-time student printed 35 copies of the poster which he described as “some graphic designers’ worst nightmare.”

He titled the creation ‘I’m tired of online friends, let’s be friends in real life’ and called on Aussies aged 17 to 24 who weren’t ‘bigots’ to get in touch.

‘In the rise of social media I say: f**k it! If you want to be friends (or enemies) CALL ME TODAY!!!” he wrote.

Cooper said he received an overwhelming response to his poster, with more than 50 different people calling or texting him.

He explained that of the 55 comments, some made encouraging comments, and a small number were trolls, but the “vast majority” were people who genuinely wanted to make friends.

“Now I have plans from this week to next week for trips, places to go and people to see, and that’s fun,” Cooper said.

Cooper believes the best way to connect with others is through comedy. He wrote “little funny things” on the poster so people would laugh and be more likely to text him.

“I think someone who is really funny and can really make people laugh is a real treasure for social circles and humanity,” Cooper said.

“So the whole idea [of the poster] was to make it so sexy and so that it was about being good again.”

On the poster, Cooper posted a photo of himself and mentioned his interests and qualities he brings to a friendship.

He described himself as the “go-to guy” for complaining, a great movie watcher, a talker and a listener, someone who would text random thoughts at noon and a person who would invite himself over to your house to boil eggs.

He added: “I’m actually very charming and funny.”

The Gen Zer, who studies psychology and counseling at the Australian College of Applied Professions, said he used the poster to highlight how young Aussies are stuck socializing via social media.

“I feel like the younger generation relies too much on social media,” Cooper said.

‘Nowadays the number of depression and loneliness is increasing. We feel so isolated by our devices because we are more connected than ever, but in a way that is socially isolating.

‘People don’t put themselves out there. They don’t bother talking to people. I’m pretty sure the right people will look, see the poster and speak to me.’

Cooper (pictured) said he was motivated to create the poster because young Aussies are too dependent on social media to make friends and socialize

He urged young Aussies to let go of their phones and encouraged them not to be afraid to put themselves out there.

“You only live once and you have to make sure you know this is the prime of your life,” Cooper said.

‘You don’t live it by being on your phone. You have to go out and experience life yourself.”

While most travelers hope to reach ancient sites or historical monuments, one British explorer tries to get as far away from them as possible.

Chris Brown hopes to reach Point Nemo – the most remote place on Earth and the graveyard for hundreds of pieces of space junk.

In the middle of the Pacific Ocean, Point Nemo is so far from any land that the nearest humans are on the International Space Station 250 miles (408 km) above Earth.

If successful, the 62-year-old entrepreneur from Harrogate will become the first Briton to complete a specific expedition to the point.

‘I’m going to try to get in the water if at all possible. “I also expect to open a bottle of bubbly when I get there,” he said.

Chris Brown hopes to reach Point Nemo – the most remote place on Earth and the graveyard for hundreds of pieces of space junk

Mr Brown and his son Mika, 32, set sail aboard the chartered expedition yacht Hanse Explorer from Puerto Montt, Chile, on March 12.

The pair hope to reach Point Nemo on March 20 or 21 if all goes according to plan.

Although Mr Brown says he had considered using a racing yacht to get to the point as quickly as possible, he ultimately opted for the safer option of a more robust vessel.

The luxury yacht usually makes tourist expeditions to Antarctica and is said to pass quite close to Point Nemo.

Mr Brown said that ‘after some negotiation the owners agreed to our little detour.’

POINT NEMO: THE MOST REMOTE LOCATION ON EARTH

‘Point Nemo’, named after Jules Verne’s famous submarine Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, is the most remote place on earth.

This remote oceanic location is located at coordinates 48°52.6′S 123°23.6′W.

This puts it about 1,670 miles from the nearest landmass: Ducie Island.

Nemo has the Pitcairn Islands to the north, the Easter Islands to the northeast and the Maher Islands to the south.

Its remote location has made it a popular spot for space agencies.

They use it as a graveyard for rocket stages and satellites because it allows them to return to Earth to reduce risks.

The crew’s destination is the so-called Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility, meaning it is the furthest point from land.

From Point Nemo, the nearest land is Ducie Island, part of the Pitcairn Islands, which is 2,688 kilometers away.

Besides a few small islands, the nearest major inhabited areas are Wellington, New Zealand and Concepción, Chile, both of which are over 2,500 miles away.

This part of the world is so remote that it has become the most popular place for international space agencies to drop falling space debris.

Since 1971, more than 260 pieces of space debris have found their final resting place in the waters around Point Nemo, including Russia’s Mir space station.

Within the next decade, this remote part of the Pacific Ocean will also be the site of the International Space Station’s downing.

When the ISS lands at Point Nemo, it will actually be seven times further from any human settlement than it is in orbit.

The point has been known since 1992, when a research engineer calculated the furthest point for landing, taking into account the Earth’s ellipsoid shape.

Since its discovery, several ships have approached the point, including Ocean Race participants traveling between Auckland, New Zealand and Itajaí, Brazil.

Point Nemo's remote location makes it the ideal place for space agencies to retrieve space debris from orbit, because the chance of anyone getting hit is so incredibly low.

However, maritime experts have stated that ‘it is possible that no human ever passed through the specific coordinates’.

Nevertheless, Mr Brown appears undeterred by the extreme remoteness of the site.

Ultimately, he hopes to become the first person to reach all eight continental poles of inaccessibility on Earth.

These are the points on each continent that are furthest from any ocean, making them among the most remote places on Earth.

Mr Brown has already reached five of the eight, reaching the poles in Antarctica, Oceania, Africa, North America and South America.

“I don’t consider this as dangerous as my expeditions to Africa or Antarctica,” he said.

‘The obvious danger is that you are miles from anywhere at sea, and you are a long way from any of the shipping lanes, so if there was a problem with the boat help would take a long time to wait. ‘

During the expedition to the Antarctic Pole of Inaccessibility, Mr Brown and his son were briefly stranded in temperatures of -28°C after their plane broke down.

But while Mr. Brown may be adventurous, he also seems to have a keen sense of danger.

Last year he came to media attention after it was revealed that he had turned down a spot on the ill-fated submarine expedition to the Titanic.

Mr Brown said he even paid a deposit for a seat on the OceanGate ship.

However, he pulled out of the trip after discovering the submarine would be controlled with games console controllers saying it looked ‘sloppy’.

Mr Brown plans to collect water samples at Point Nemo to test the density of microplastics on their way to the world’s most remote oceans.

In addition to being a dumping ground for space debris, Point Nemo is located in a complex network of circular currents that trap large amounts of waste.

The South Pacific Gyre in which Point Nemo is located is a confluence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current, the Humboldt Current, and the West Wind Drift.

As a result, this region of the Pacific Ocean has become something of an oceanic garbage dump.

Fortunately, this area may also be one of the least biologically active regions of the world’s oceans.

In the 4,000 meter deep waters it is so devoid of nutrients that life can hardly exist.

Scientists have only discovered bacteria and small crabs living in the sea vents on the ocean floor near the point.

Nottingham Forest have been hit with a four-point deduction after breaching the Premier League’s winning and sustainability rules.

The penalty sees Forest drop into the relegation zone as they now sit 18th in the Premier League with 21 points, one point behind Luton in 17th. An appeal will likely follow.

The Premier League has claimed that the club exceeded the PSR threshold by as much as £34.5 million in the relevant period.

Forest were accused of breaching spending rules in January 2024, along with fellow Premier League side Everton, with the Toffees receiving a 10-point deduction earlier this season.

That penalty was later reduced to six points, but Forest have now suffered a similar fate at a crucial point in the campaign.

Forest now find themselves in the relegation zone below Luton after deducting four points

Forest published a statement on Monday outlining that they were ‘disappointed’ with the decision to hand out a points penalty, although they did say it was for the integrity of the competition to hand out the penalty ‘in the same season in which they are imposed. ‘.

Forest’s four-point penalty

Forest received a lower sanction than Everton, partly due to the fact that they admitted their guilt from the start and adopted a joined-up approach to the Premier League. By contrast, Everton denied breaking spending rules for a long period after they were charged.

Forest are likely to appeal, which the Premier League has promised to hear by April 15. The verdict would follow a month later. The Premier League has imposed itself a ‘backstop’ date of May 24 to conclude all PSR cases and any appeals. This is five days after the last day of the season, but the Premier League expects to have things resolved before then.

The Premier League has made it clear throughout this process that they do not have a set sanctions policy and do not recommend a set points deduction. Each individual case is considered and heard on its merits by a separate, independent committee, and they have no current plans to change this. The independent committee that heard Everton’s appeal last month ruled that a six-point deduction was “necessary and sufficient” to enforce the PSR rules, but did not recommend its introduction as a minimum rate.

By Matt Hughes

It added: ‘We were extremely appalled by the tone and content of the Premier League’s submissions to the Commission.

‘After months of involvement in the Premier League and exceptional cooperation throughout, this was unexpected and has damaged the confidence we had in the Premier League.

‘For the Premier League to require an eight-point sanction as a starting point was completely disproportionate compared to the nine points prescribed by their own rules for insolvency.

‘We were also surprised that the Premier League did not take into account the club’s unique circumstances and their mitigation at all. In circumstances where this approach is adopted by future PSR committees, it would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for newly promoted clubs without parachute payments to compete, undermining the integrity and competitiveness of the Premier League.”

The statement also referred to a deal to sell Brennan Johnson to Tottenham, which would be a key part of their defense for breaching spending rules in the relevant period.

Because FFP calculations are made over a three-year period ending June 30, the Johnson deal will count towards the 2021-24 settlement rather than 2020-23 as it was completed on deadline day.

Clubs are allowed to incur financial losses of £105 million over three years, with Forest reporting an annual loss of £45.6 million in their latest accounts.

Another complication comes from Forest being a Premier League team for only one of those three seasons; Championship clubs have losses of up to £13m per season, meaning their cap was effectively £61m.

Forest say they could have sold Johnson to Brentford in June for around £30m, which would have put them in a healthier financial position for the 2020-2023 period, but almost £20m out of pocket in total.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side now face an uphill battle to stay in the Premier League for another year

This deduction puts Forest at greater risk of relegation if they end up in the bottom three

For the club’s sustainability, they claim that accepting almost £50 million for Johnson in August was better than £30 million earlier in the summer.

The statement continued: ‘Even after missing the PSR reporting deadline, the Club still took steps to ensure that Brennan Johnson was sold before the end of the transfer window. That was a clear demonstration of our respect and support for PSR.

‘The Commission’s decision raises questions that are important for all aspiring clubs. The player transfer market is a highly specialized trading environment that cannot be compared to the sale of normal products and services.

‘There will be cases where a player transfer cannot be completed in the first half of a transfer window and only at the end of that period. This should not be a reason for condemning a club. That this is not recognized by the Commission or the Premier League should be a matter of great concern to all fans of our national football.

‘Of wider concern to all aspiring clubs is the worrying effect this decision will have on the operation of the player trading model. This is the only model that allows clubs outside the small group at the top of the Premier League to realistically move up the football pyramid.”

Forest’s response to the punishment concluded with the insinuation that ‘the high level of cooperation’ they had shown throughout the process had not been ‘reciprocated’ by the league.

Prior to the announcement, Forest were just three points ahead of Luton in 18th, with the Hatters earning a late 1-1 draw with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side on Saturday to stay within striking distance, although they now move Forest to 17th took place. .

A hearing took place to decide what punishment the club faced on Thursday and Friday last week, ahead of Saturday’s match.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side now sit in 17th place, but the boss claims his side will continue to fight against relegation

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side now sit in 17th place, but the boss claims his side will continue to fight against relegation

Forest’s spending since returning to the English top flight in early 2022-23 has been extremely lavish.

From that summer onwards, no less 42 players have come to the City Ground for more than £250 million.

Asked about the upcoming ruling after Saturday’s clash with Luton, Espirito Santo said the club would ‘keep going and fighting’ in a bid to overcome defeat.

The indictment against Manchester City in February for 115 alleged infringements is an ongoing case.

FOREST’S FULL STATEMENT

Nottingham Forest are extremely disappointed with the Commission’s decision to impose a four-point sanction on the Club, which will be applied with immediate effect.

Despite our disappointment, we thank the Commission for its willingness to deal with this matter on an accelerated basis. The Club considers it essential to the integrity of the competition that the charge be resolved in the season in which the charge is filed.

We were extremely disturbed by the tone and content of the Premier League’s comments to the Commission.

After months of involvement in the Premier League and exceptional cooperation throughout, this was unexpected and has damaged the confidence we had in the Premier League.

The fact that the Premier League required an eight-point sanction as a starting point was completely disproportionate compared to the nine points prescribed by their own rules for insolvency.

We were also surprised that the Premier League did not take into account the club’s unique circumstances and mitigation at all. In circumstances where this approach is adopted by future PSR committees, it would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for newly promoted clubs without parachute payments to compete, undermining the integrity and competitiveness of the Premier League.

While the Premier League may have questioned the Club’s business plan, the Club continues to maintain that it has responsibly balanced PSR compliance with significant investment in the squad to ensure that for the first time in over twenty years we to compete in the competition.

Even after the Club missed the PSR reporting deadline, it still took steps to ensure Brennan Johnson was sold before the end of the transfer window. That was a clear demonstration of our respect and support for PSR.

The Commission’s decision raises questions that are important for all aspiring clubs. The player transfer market is a highly specialized trading environment that cannot be compared to the sale of normal products and services.

It may happen that a player transfer cannot be completed in the first half of a transfer period and only at the end of that period. This should not be a reason for condemning a club. That this is not recognized by the Commission or the Premier League should be a matter of great concern to all fans of our national football.

Of wider concern to all aspiring clubs is the worrying effect this decision will have on the operation of the player trading model. This is the only model that allows clubs outside the small group at the top of the Premier League to realistically move up the football pyramid.

The Commission’s rationale is that clubs should only invest after they have made a profit on their player development. This reasoning destroys mobility in the football pyramid and the effect of the decision will be to drastically reduce the room for maneuver for all such clubs, leading to stagnation of our national game.

We believe that the high level of cooperation shown by the Club throughout this process, which is confirmed and recorded in the Commission’s decision, was not reciprocated by the Premier League.

About 44 meticulously written minutes On Thursday, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke on the floor of the Senate about his Jewish identity, his love for the State of Israel, his horror at the wanton slaughter of Israelis on October 7 and his views on apportioning blame. for the Gaza massacre, saying it was primarily the fault of Hamas terrorists.

Then Mr. Schumer, a New York Democrat and the highest-ranking elected Jew in American history, said Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was an obstacle to peace and called for new elections in the world’s only Jewish state .

The opposition was not nearly as scrupulous.

Within minutes, the Republican leadership of the House of Representatives demanded an apology. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky used Netanyahu’s nickname and declared: “Make no mistake: the Democratic Party does not have an anti-Bibi problem. It has an anti-Israel problem.” And the Republican Jewish Coalition declared that “the most powerful Democrat in Congress was stabbing the Jewish state in the back.”

The months that followed the October 7 massacre and the ensuing, disastrously deadly war in Gaza have been unbearable for American Jews, caught between a tradition of liberalism that has dominated much of Jewish politics and an anti-Israel backlash from politically left. which has left many feeling isolated and sometimes persecuted.

But Mr. Schumer’s speech was potentially a turning point in a much longer political process, initially followed by Republicans but recently joined by left-wing Democrats — to make Israel a partisan issue. Republicans, as they see it, would be the party of Israeli supporters. The Democrats would, as the rising left wants, be the party of Palestine.

At the root of this divide lies a fundamental question: is support for the Jewish state separable from support for Israel’s democratically elected government? Republicans have said no for years. The Democratic left increasingly agrees, but from a different perspective: Israel is bad no matter who rules the country.

“The pressure – electoral, social, cultural – on American Jews right now to declare themselves” on the justice of the war in Gaza and on the legitimacy of the Israeli prime minister has been “relentless, relentless and at times downright cruel,” said David. Wolpe, a prominent rabbi in Los Angeles and visiting scholar at Harvard Divinity School.

Mr. Schumer’s speech and subsequent partisan backlash have intensified that pressure.

“It is impossible to understate the seismic event that this was,” said Matthew Brooks, former chief executive of the Republican Jewish Coalition, who made clear that the group would use the speech to drive Jewish voters to the Republican Party.

While Republicans accused Mr. Schumer of trying to force elections at a time when most Israelis support and focus on the war against Hamas, the Senate leader was in fact aware of Israeli public opinion. He noted that “so many Israelis have lost confidence in the vision and direction of their government,” a phrase supported by opinion polls that indicate Netanyahu is deeply unpopular. Mr Schumer was also cautious when he said elections should only be held “once the war begins to subside” and that he would respect the outcome.

Jewish Democrats have long maintained that support for a Jewish state in the traditional homeland of the Jewish people is inherent to their identity, regardless of the government in power in Jerusalem. Mr. Schumer tried to make that point from the beginning of Thursday’s speech, explaining that his last name is derived from the Hebrew word for “guardian.” He is, he said, a “summer Israel – a guardian of the people of Israel.”

But his speech came at an incendiary moment, when support among Democrats is waning for what Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent of Vermont, calls “Netanyahu’s war,” and loud voices on the left say the state of Israel is inherently wrong: a Netanyahu’s ‘war’. settler-colonialist invader incompatible with the rights and sovereignty of the Palestinian people who lived there before Israeli independence in 1948.

“You have this divide where the overwhelming majority of American Jews support Israel, support its right to exist as a Jewish state, and an increasingly vocal minority do not support Israel as a Jewish state and reject what happened in 1948 to ensure that the Jewish state state survived,” Michael J. Koplow, chief policy officer of the Israel Policy Forum, a Washington-based research group, said from Israel on Friday.

He continued: “Schumer needed to maintain a way to criticize the Israeli government without going anywhere near Camp No. 2, which is why he spent so much time early on talking about Hamas’s guilt and his love for Israel.”

But at such a political moment, any notion of “nuance” — a word Mr. Schumer used when he lamented the “silent majority” of Jews whose “nuanced views have never been represented in discussions about the war in Gaza” — was most likely yes. don’t collapse.

Republicans made no secret of their intention to use Schumer’s words against him. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has distributed emails demanding that vulnerable Democrats up for re-election this year speak out against Schumer’s positions.

Norm Coleman, a former Republican senator from Minnesota who went to public school with Mr. Schumer in New York and is now chairman of the Republican Jewish Coalition, said Friday that the bipartisanship that still existed around support for Israel could be nullified done by Mr. Schumer’s indictment of Israel. Mr Netanyahu and his call for new elections. He accused Schumer of political motives that stemmed specifically from President Biden’s problems with Arab Americans in the crucial swing state of Michigan.

“I don’t think Schumer speaks for American Jews,” Mr. Coleman said. “I think he’s speaking as the majority leader of a Democratic Party that is now so concerned about the left, so concerned about Michigan, that he’s giving a speech telling the democratically elected government of a democratic country that they should no longer be in government. are.”

Even some centrist Jewish Democrats, such as Rep. Brad Schneider of Illinois, condemned Schumer’s call for new elections in Israel as interference in the affairs of what he called “the region’s only true democracy.”

For many older liberal Jews, however, Mr. Schumer’s words were a tonic. They expressed their shared pain over the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza, and their frustrations with an Israeli government with far-right ministers, whom Mr. Schumer mentioned by name, who adamantly oppose any concessions for peace. or Palestinian sovereignty. His words also reflected Democrats’ increasing desire to use what Mr. Schumer called “leverage” tied to billions of American tax dollars flowing to the Israeli military.

Daniel G. Zemel, a Reform rabbi in Washington, DC, and a proponent of ‘liberal Zionism’, said Mr. Schumer’s prescriptions were “exactly what American Jews should be asking for.”

“There needs to be a different approach,” he said, pushing back on those who called Mr. Schumer’s prescriptions antidemocratic. “As a rabbi and as a Jew, I have the right and obligation to say what I want Israel to be in this world.”

Representative Jerrold Nadler, Democrat of New York and the dean of the members of the Jewish Home, posted on social media that Mr. Schumer “is right,” adding: “Prime Minister Netanyahu has become an obstacle to peace and the two-state solution.”

Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois is one of those progressive Jewish Democrats who feels caught in a vice between activists who harass her as “Genocide Jan” and her personal belief that Israel has a right to exist as a Jewish state, side by side with a sovereign Palestinian. stands. It is, she acknowledged, a “charged moment” for politicians like herself, but she said Friday that Mr. Schumer spoke for a majority of Jews in the United States and Israel.

She fiercely rejected the idea that Mr. Schumer was encroaching on Israeli democracy, noting that Mr. Netanyahu spoke to Congress in 2015 to pressure President Barack Obama to abandon his nuclear deal with Iran.

“There’s a hunger right now for a different path, and that’s what Schumer had the courage to talk about,” she said. “Most Israelis and American Jews understand the importance and essential role that the United States plays, and we feel like Bibi is thumbing his nose at us.”

Kylie Minogue stated during an interview with Kylie Minogue that she refused to slow down amid her current ‘wave’ of comeback success Billboard.

The 55-year-old singer is back on the global music scene after the breakthrough hit Padam Padam from her sixteenth studio album Tension.

The performer — who recently duetted with Madonna — told the outlet that while she was happy with the warm reception to her new projects, she didn’t want to be in a position where there would be “no hope” for her career.

Minogue stated that while she was creatively inspired, she was also “at a point in my life where I know it’s not forever.”

‘I just want to maximize this brilliant wave. If you’re not paddling when the wave comes, you have no hope,” she added.

The artist won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Dance Recording last month, and her Las Vegas residency, titled More Than Just a Residency, has become a favorite among visitors to Sin City.

Minogue, who described her recent success in the United States as “a great victory for longevity,” then noted how American listeners had lost and gained interest in her over the years.

“I’ve had this kind of back-and-forth with America. “I was the ‘Loco-Motion’ girl for a long time, then I was the ‘la-la-la’ girl, and I think I’m ‘Padam’ now,” she noted.

She then added that with the advent of “streaming, the algorithms will lead you to discover more of my music.”

The Can’t Get You Outta My Head singer then told Billboard that she taught herself several production tools during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The performer admitted that she found the experience of taking control in the studio particularly ‘liberating’.

She said: ‘I’ve had a lot of awkward moments [in the studio]. No one would have known because I pretended to go through it. But to have my own microphone and do it on my own time? It is awesome. I could go on for hours.”

Minogue went on to say that she had ‘matured’ both as an individual and as an artist, which she described as ‘so pleasant’.

The hitmaker also noted that her creative process “became more vacuum-tight” the more time she spent in the studio.

The Love At First Sight singer then stated that she had learned to love her singing voice after years of doubting her abilities.

‘To accept that I don’t have a big voice, but to be proud that I have my voice, and to really own it? That took a long time,” she says.

Minogue added: “But I can adapt and have many voices, just like my own [visual] presentation I am chameleon-like. That’s who I am.’

Selena Gomez admitted that she feels “sick” when she looks back at how she used to see herself.

The Wizards of Waverly Place actress admitted it was “bumpy.” [her] out” to look back on how critical she was of herself when she was younger, and it has taken time to realize the importance of “speaking to yourself with kindness.”

However, this is not a foreign concept to the Kill Em with Kindness singer as she has been working on herself for quite some time.

Since her 2015 album Revival, the singer-slash-actress has publicly used her music as a platform to express her feelings.

Her 2022 documentary My Mind and Me – which was filmed over six years and chronicled her struggles with trust issues, suicidal thoughts that led to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and burnout – had changed the way she treated herself.

Selena admitted on a SXSW panel titled Mindfulness Over Perfection: Getting Real On Mental Health, “It makes me sick to hear the things I said about myself in the beginning. It destroys me.

‘But I think everyone can relate to that feeling. It’s important to speak kindly to yourself, but I don’t think I really understood that [at the start of the film].’

The 31-year-old singer and actress explained that she was inspired to be more open about her struggles after watching Girl Interrupted with her mother, Mandy Teefey.

She said it sparked a discussion about the strangeness of the entertainment industry and how Selena felt like she didn’t belong during her time as a child actor.

The Disney alum noted that it’s impossible to force someone to deal with mental health issues before they’re ready.

She reflected, “There were a lot of people who cared about me more than I cared about myself, and who really wanted me to do things I wasn’t ready for. I had my lowest point and I had to do it in my time.

“It took a few tries, but I like to think and hope that I’m in a much better place now.”

The star was condemned not only in her career as a child actor, but also in her personal relationships.

Gomez famously dated pop star Justin Bieber and was on and off from 2010 to 2018 before calling it quits for good.

Two months after breaking up with the Canadian native, he was engaged to model Hailey Baldwin – now Bieber.

This prompted her to release Lose You to Love Me, which fans speculate is about him.

When President Biden declared this weekend that he was drawing a “red line” on Israel’s military action in Gaza, he appeared to be trying to raise the potential costs for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as their relationship plummets to new depths.

But he never said what exactly would happen if Netanyahu ignored him and continued Israel’s military operation by invading the southern city of Rafah, a move that Biden has — repeatedly — said would be a big mistake. It is unclear whether he hesitated because he did not want to indicate what response he might prepare, or because he did not want to be criticized if he backed away from whatever action he was considering.

Or perhaps he remembered, given his long experience in the Senate and the White House, that drawing red lines turned out badly for Barack Obama when it came to Syria and for George W. Bush when it came to North Korea and Iran . America’s allies in the Middle East were stunned by Obama’s reversal. It was later judged that Mr Bush had invaded a country that had no nuclear weapons – Iraq – while the North was testing its first nuclear weapon under his watch.

Mr. Biden’s line drawing was immediately dismissed — and matched — by Mr. Netanyahu, who shot back: “You know, I have a red line. Do you know what the red line is? That October 7th will no longer happen.” The prime minister was, of course, referring to the Hamas attack that killed 1,200 people in Israel, left dozens of others as hostages and sparked a war now in its sixth month.

Such talk of red lines is not exactly new: leaders of all stripes, from the leaders of democracies to brutal autocrats, often invoke the phrase to describe steps that another country should not even consider because the consequences would be more painful than they could imagine. The strange thing in this case is that the lines are drawn by two allies who regularly celebrate how close they are, but whose dialogue is starting to become somewhat toxic.

The seemingly obvious implication of Mr. Biden’s threats was that if the Israelis went ahead with their plans and carried out another military operation with many civilian casualties, Mr. Biden would, for the first time, impose restrictions on how Israel could use the weapons that the United States has used. States supply. So far, Biden has rejected such a move — even as Washington puts conditions on almost every arms sale, including demanding that Ukraine not fire U.S. missiles, artillery or drones at Russia.

But Mr. Biden appears to be slowly reconsidering his aversion to restrictions on how Israel could use the weapons it buys, some U.S. officials say. He has not made a decision and appears to still be debating the issue in his own mind, according to officials who spoke with him.

The White House will not discuss the subject publicly. During a briefing with reporters on Air Force One on Monday, as Mr. Biden headed to New Hampshire for a campaign event, a White House spokesman declined to say what price Israel would pay if it defies Mr. Biden would exceed. And Mr. Biden himself ruled out cutting off defensive weapons such as Iron Dome, the U.S.-Israeli missile defense project that has intercepted short-range missiles fired into Israel by Hamas.

“It’s a red line, but I’m never going to leave Israel,” he said in an interview with MSNBC last week. “Israel’s defense is still crucial. So there’s no red line: I’m going to cut off all the weapons, so they don’t have an Iron Dome to protect them.”

“But there are red lines that if he crosses,” he added, drifting away from completing the sentence – or the threat. “You can’t let another 30,000 Palestinians die.”

By using the red line, with its vivid suggestion of some kind of tripwire, Mr Biden also waded into dangerous territory for American presidents. Over the past few decades, Mr. Biden’s predecessors have repeatedly described lines that America’s adversaries or allies could not cross without inviting the most dire consequences.

And time and time again they have regretted it.

Consider Obama’s statement in August 2012, when intelligence reports suggested that President Bashar al-Assad of Syria may be preparing to use chemical weapons against his own people. Mr. Obama had avoided internal unrest in Syria, but one day in the White House press room he told reporters that if Mr. Assad were to move or use large quantities of chemical weapons, he would cross a “red line” and ” my calculation would change’. .”

By the spring of 2013, it was clear that Assad was doing just that, and when a senior Israeli intelligence official stated as much, the Israeli government had to distance itself from the comments, fearing that the intelligence findings would ensnare Mr. Assad. Obama came in. By early summer it became clear that the weapons were being actively used, but Obama called off a planned attack on Assad’s facilities because he feared it could lead to even more chemical attacks — and drain the United States . in a new major conflict in the Middle East.

Mr. Bush found himself in a similar situation in 2003 when he declared that he would not “tolerate” a nuclear-armed North Korea. That summer, he used the same word to say he would not tolerate Iran gaining the ability to build a nuclear weapon.

During his presidency, the North Koreans tested a nuclear weapon — they have since tested five more — and the Iranians have made progress toward that capability. And while the United States has both tightened sanctions and threatened military action, the North now has such a substantial arsenal that U.S. officials have all but given up on the idea that it will ever disarm.

Iran’s capabilities — which seemed neutralized, at least for a while, after Obama struck a nuclear deal in 2015 — have surged again since President Donald J. Trump abandoned that deal three years later. Today, the country has a stockpile of enriched uranium that can be turned into weapons fuel within days or weeks, and a weapon within about a year.

An ‘offensive’ mural depicting murdered Sydney couple Luke Davies and Jesse Baird has been removed amid controversy over the graphic portrayal of their alleged murder by a NSW police officer.

The young couple were allegedly murdered by Beau Lamarre-Condon at Mr Baird’s home before being dumped in a remote property.

A graphic mural depicting the suspected murder by a figure in police uniform was spotted on an alley wall by Sydney residents this week.

The image, posted on Reddit, appears to show Mr Baird and Mr Davies shot while lying down, with an iridescent pattern resembling blood.

In a statement, police said they were called to Earl Pl in Potts Point on Wednesday following reports from a member of the public of “offensive graffiti”.

“The graffiti has since been painted over by the City of Sydney Council,” police said.

‘Officers from Kings Cross Police Area Command are investigating the incident.’

A City of Sydney spokesperson confirmed the graffiti had been removed, adding that “the work depicted an act of violence.”

“We will remove such graffiti or posters as quickly as possible,” the spokesperson said.

The alleged double murder sparked an outpouring of grief within the city’s LGBTQI community, as well as a strong backlash against state police.

NSW Police were initially told they were no longer invited to attend last month’s Mardi Gras parade, before organizers agreed they could do so, but without uniforms.

The alleged double murder sparked an outpouring of grief within the city’s LGBTQI community, as well as a strong backlash against state police.

Users online were quick to condemn the mural as “very confrontational” and “in bad taste”, while some pointed out that the alleged killings were not linked to gay hate crimes.

“I would say in poor taste given the recency of the (deaths) and because family and loved ones are still very much in mourning,” one Reddit user said.

“However, I don’t think we should dismiss the suspect’s role as a police officer just because he is homosexual.

“I do think it’s relevant and something that shouldn’t be quickly dismissed.”

Another user said they were “glad it was removed” and opposed previous plans to ban police from the Mardi Gras parade.

“There are plenty of gay police officers and officers who think this is disgusting and should not be punished,” they said.

‘Just a step too far. It’s a tragedy, but far from a hate crime.”

Police have previously said they would argue in court that the killings were likely related to domestic violence and not related to the couple’s sexual identity.

Lamarre-Condon is currently in pre-trial detention. No pleas have been entered and he will appear in court again in April.

The Australian letter is a weekly newsletter from our Australian bureau. To register to receive it by email. This week’s issue is written by Natasha Frost, reporting from Auckland, New Zealand.

Within months, New Zealand is likely to lose about 20 percent of its journalists and television news producers.

“We’ve seen thousands of cuts in New Zealand for at least a decade,” says Colin Peacock, the producer and presenter of the Radio New Zealand show Mediawatch. “This feels like a turning point.”

Last week, Newshub, the news division of Three, a television station owned by Warner Bros Discovery, announced it would close as of June 30. That means the elimination of more than 200 jobs and the death of one of the country’s two free TV news stations. in New Zealand.

Today its main competitor, TVNZ, said it would also cut dozens of jobs. On the chopping block are two daily newscasts; Sunday, a long current affairs show; and Fair Go, a consumer rights program that has been running for 47 years.

Many of the shows that have survived the ax so far, such as Seven Sharp and Breakfast, are lighter fare, with clearer commercial viability. “They keep the programs where they can put integrated ads (basically sponsored content),” Mr. Peacock said.

At both outlets, executives cited challenging economic conditions and declining advertising revenue, issues that have also affected the media industry in the United States. TVNZ, for example, expects to lose 15.6 million New Zealand dollars, about $9.6 million, for the year ending in March.

“There was no single trigger that caused this,” James Gibbons, a regional director at Warner Bros Discovery, told local news media in New Zealand of Newshub’s closure. “Rather it was a combination of negative events in New Zealand and globally. The consequences of the economic downturn have been severe and the recovery has not materialized as expected.”

What is lost in the New Zealand news media landscape appears impossible to recover, says Duncan Greive, media commentator and founder of The Spinoff, a New Zealand news channel.

“So many really dedicated people – some at the very top of the profession in this country – are likely to lose their jobs,” he said. “And it’s hard to imagine them doing similar work with similar impact in this country.”

New Zealand currently has work approximately 1,600 journalistsAccording to the country’s census, the country’s population is approximately 5.2 million.

These journalists do a lot with little: in addition to the two television channels, New Zealand has almost two dozen daily newspapers, as well as two Sunday newspapers; a selection of news magazine brands including The Listener and North and South; and several independent publishers, some digital-only, such as Metro and The Spinoff.

Smaller outlets are also under pressure. The Pantograph Punch, an online arts and culture magazine founded in 2006, announced this week that this was the case goes on an indefinite hiatus from the end of the month due to a lack of money, including from public funding agencies.

Unlike some other Commonwealth countries – Australia, Britain and Canada, for example – New Zealand does not have a fully integrated public broadcaster for radio and television. Although TVNZ is a state-owned company, it is commercially funded through advertising. (Radio New Zealand is the country’s only fully publicly funded broadcaster.)

Some, including Leader of the Opposition Chris Hipkins, have urged the government to take action to give TVNZ more support. But in comments to reporters, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon dismissed that possibility. “We are unlikely to see further ownership of media assets,” he said.

“Their instinct is not to intervene in the media market at all,” Mr Peacock said of the current coalition government, led by the centre-right National Party. “They recognize that the news media play an important role in democracy, keeping people informed, but they really don’t want to commit to any kind of bailout.”

It was hard to imagine any individual or company stepping forward to save the day or support the country’s news media, Mr. Greive said.

“These decisions are final and do not appear to be a cry for help,” he said. “They don’t want help because they can’t imagine a world where they could ever afford it.”

Here are the stories of the week.
