A desperate rescue mission is underway for two people trapped underground after a mine collapse.

Emergency services are responding to reports of two people trapped in the Ballarat gold mine at Mount Clear, Ballarat, after it collapsed around 4.50pm on Wednesday.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and the Country Fire Authority have both sent “resources” to the scene, an FRV spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

Ambulance Victoria also sent paramedics and an air ambulance to the collapsed mine.

“The situation is developing and further information will be provided as it becomes available,” read a statement from Victoria Police.

Emergency services are desperately trying to rescue two people trapped underground after the gold mine at the Indicator Lane site in Ballarat (pictured) collapsed on Wednesday afternoon.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen said she was “thinking of every worker and family affected by the event.”

“Tonight will be a long night for them and for the entire Ballarat community.”

The bushland surrounding the Ballarat Gold Mine has been extensively scoured by police and volunteers in the search for missing mother, Samantha Murphy.

The 51-year-old disappeared without a trace after leaving her home on Eureka Street in Ballarat East about 7am on February 4 for a run at Woowookrung Regional Park.

Mobile phone records show Ms Murphy arrived in Mount Clear about an hour later, where police allege she was murdered by 22-year-old Patrick Stephenson.

Police warned those involved in the search for Ms Murphy to be weary of the hundreds of abandoned mine shafts in the area, many of which have been left open.

Despite the massive search, the mother-of-three’s remains have yet to be located.

The network of mine shafts that make up the Ballarat Gold Mine has been operational since the 1850s, with some of the original shafts still in use.

A cave-in at the site trapped 27 miners about a kilometer underground at around 3:30 am on November 12, 2007.

All miners were recovered safely after being hoisted to the surface through a ventilation shaft at around 8am.

On Anzac Day the year before, Tasmanian miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb were trapped in a small cage 925 meters underground for two weeks after a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine, northwest of Launceston.

While Mr. Russell and Mr. Webb triumphantly left the mine, their colleague Larry Knight had been killed in the initial collapse.

They were both able to join mourners at their colleague’s funeral – which had been postponed until they were released – on May 9.

More to come.

Jorgie Porter’s dog came to her rescue during a terrifying armed robbery.

The Hollyoaks actress, 36, was sleeping at her country home in Cheshire with her businessman fiance Ollie Piotrowski and their son Forest, 11, when their Doberman Stella made a noise to raise the alarm.

Jorgie and her fiancé jumped out of bed to check their security cameras and were shocked to discover a pair of intruders, who fled as soon as they heard the dog’s barking.

Speaking on the Invitation Only podcast, she explained: ‘Our dog Stella saved us. She chased them away so they wouldn’t come in.

“But it was the scariest thing because we were all involved [the house]. And you can see from the CCTV footage that they were carrying things… we don’t know what they were holding.

‘I was sleeping, but Ollie heard Stella barking in a different way. So he went to check on her, and when he looked outside…the lights [on the system] were disabled.

Jorgie – known to soap fans as Theresa McQueen in the Channel 4 series – added that her fiancé called the police and soon there was a ‘gang’ of family and friends surrounding her home.

She said: ‘He called the police and then they came. Yes, it was terrible. [Afterwards] we had all these friends and relatives around.

‘We had a gang in the house who camped together.

“You just don’t know what they’re going to do, if they’re going to come back, or whatever.”

The actress even felt like she had to beg the police to stay with them for a while and they agreed.

She added: ‘I even said to the police, ‘Can you please take care of us?’ And they said, ‘Yes, we certainly can.'”

After the events of the scary night, Jorgie even considers asking a second canine companion to watch her, just like Stella did.

She added: ‘We were even looking for another dog because we thought, you know, that was so brilliant what Stella did.

“We joke that we gave her a paycheck and a security badge!”

A few days ago, Jorgie and Ollie, who have been dating since 2020, shared photos of their luxurious getaway to St. Lucia with their son.

She also explained that the heartbreak of past miscarriages made them “stronger” as a couple, and Oliver emphasized the importance of being open about their raw emotions.

The couple welcomed Forrest in December 2022 after tragically miscarrying quadruplets at 14 weeks in August 2021.

The Hollyoaks actress then suffered a second miscarriage in February 2022, six weeks into a new pregnancy – on the day of the couple’s engagement party.

In a joint interview, the couple spoke to Cheshire Life about how they have coped with the loss of their baby.

She said: ‘We felt it was important to talk to each other and try to be open and honest about how we were feeling. We have been through the toughest times and it has made us stronger. Having Ollie by my side gave me the most support.

Oliver added: “I think it’s really important to take each day as it comes, to take each emotion as it hits, whether it’s anger or sadness.

‘I think as a man you can feel helpless. I wanted to protect Jorgie and take her pain away, but in reality you can only be there for each other.’

A new management team at New York Community Bank is trying to reassure investors after the struggling lender announced a $1 billion cash injection under former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. On Thursday, the bank’s beaten-down shares rose after executives gave investors new information about the state of the company and details of the rescue plan announced the day before.

The company’s leaders, including Joseph Otting, a longtime bank executive and close ally of Mr. Mnuchin who took over as CEO this week, said the bank’s deposits were up more than $4 billion, or 7 percent, last month. decreased. They also announced a dividend cut, the second this year, to just one cent per share.

The bank’s balance sheet will be “strengthened” by the cash injection, Mr. Otting said on a call with analysts and investors, and along with a boardroom overhaul and plans to reduce the lender’s large exposure to the shaky commercial real estate market , “we will We have several levers that we can pull if necessary, while we continue to strengthen the base,” he added.

The bank’s share price rose more than 10 percent in early trading on Thursday, before settling for a gain of 7 percent. As a result, shares are still down about 60 percent since the start of the year as the bank has lurched from one crisis to another, reporting billions in writedowns and raising concerns about the accuracy of its past financial reports. The bank’s stock prices rose and its bonds were downgraded by credit rating agencies.

Amid another decline in the bank’s shares on Wednesday, trading was halted and the $1 billion deal was announced late in the afternoon, which appeared to stabilize the lender. “We view the capital increase as a much-needed step in the right direction, taking the worst-case scenario out of the picture, at least temporarily,” analysts at Stephens wrote in a research note on Thursday.

Analysts at Fitch, a rating agency that recently downgraded the bank, called the cash injection “a positive development in the near term” but warned of the “continued ambiguity regarding the company’s strategic direction and business mix.”

The Hicksville, New York-based bank operates more than 400 branches under brands like Flagstar, one of the largest residential mortgage servicers in the province, and manages an outsized loan portfolio tied to rent-regulated apartments, whose values have suffered under laws that restrict property rights. opportunity to profitably improve the properties.

The bank’s executives told analysts on Thursday that they would diversify its loan portfolio and sell assets to strengthen its balance sheet, among other cost-cutting measures. The dividend cut was a “bitter pill to swallow” for some investors, said Christopher Marinac, research director at Janney Montgomery Scott.

Regulators in Washington are eager to avoid another banking crisis just before the one-year anniversary of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. IT and other lenders that failed last year — including Signature Bank, which was eventually acquired by New York Community Bank — were felled after losing a flood of deposits.

A large portion of New York Community Bank’s deposits are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which covers deposits up to $250,000. About 80 percent of the bank’s deposits fall below that threshold, the bank said Thursday, far more than banks that failed last year. This may have prevented a more dramatic decline in deposits, Mr. Marinac noted.

Seeing their furry friend reach Crufts is a moment of pride and joy for any owner. But for those who have rescue dogs, it’s even more special.

Among the rescues participating this year, takes place at Birmingham‘s NEC between March 7-10. is Spaniel Beau from East Yorkshire, who was rescued from ‘terrible circumstances’ by the RSPCA.

The adorable pup – along with 36 other dogs – was found malnourished, dehydrated and surrounded by faeces in Gilberdyke in 2019, but will now compete in the famous dog show.

Before he was adopted, he had ‘never been outside’ and ‘never done anything’, so this is a huge achievement for the dog.

RSPCA Inspector Tom Hutton, who adopted Beau, told the story BBC news: ‘I think this will be the ultimate moment for both of us, from where he came from to now, where he is now.

“Walking around there on national television, competing with some really tall dogs. You couldn’t make it up.’

Indie, a type of greyhound known as Sloughi, is also among the animals that beat the odds and made it to Crufts.

She was found injured, starving and abandoned two years ago after being severely abused.

“Indie was really malnourished and we could see all her ribs and she had cigarette burns on her butt,” her owner Nadiyah Storey explained.

Adding: ‘She was so scared of people and she had been bitten by other dogs so she had purple spray to cover her wounds.

‘It is likely that she was used in the game trade along with hunting dogs.

“Every time we went to pet her, she flinched because she thought she was going to be hit.”

Nadiyah, from Hexam in Northumberland, first looked after Indie before deciding to give her a forever home and adopt her.

Now she is bursting with pride as the puppy will run on the green Crufts runner today.

Indie will compete alongside other dogs in a team of eight as part of the Eclipse Flyball Club, based in Morpeth.

It comes after the team became one of 16 to win their qualifying events last year.

During the event, the dogs must jump over four obstacles, which activate a fly box to release a ball.

They must then return over the same obstacles without dropping the ball, while trying not to collide with the other team’s dog.

Nadiyah recalled, “We’re used to training dogs, but we’ve never had a dog that was so afraid of being touched, so that was so difficult.

‘We took her to a Flyball club to get her socialized and she slowly progressed and then her journey to Crufts began.

‘She’s still reserved around strangers, but once she gets to know them, she’s great. Indie wasn’t very good at Flyball at first, but we stuck with it and she got better and better and here we go to Crufts.

‘Some people at Crufts breed their dogs and sell them for thousands of pounds, so it will be great to have little free Indie there.’

Meanwhile, Buddy, another rescue dog, went from not being able to be in the same room as his owner to running around the agility arena together.

She said they are “so proud of her” and that they “never thought something like this would happen.”

Meanwhile, Buddy, another rescue dog, went from not being able to be in the same room as his owner to running around the agility arena together.

He will also try his luck on the green carpet and compete in the Agility Novice Cup today at 8.15 am.

Buddy’s owner Seb Thomas, from Bridgwater, Somerset, took him in in 2018 after finding him on a Facebook rescue site.

“I went up to him, he was running away from us, growling at our other dogs, so I thought that looked like a challenge, let’s give it a try,” he said ITV News.

The proud owner recalled: ‘He had a lot of problems, skinny little thing, terrible coat, a bit biting, and now he is happy and hardly leaves our side.

‘He will do anything we want and is almost the perfect companion. It has been many years of hard work, but very worth it.’

Seb works full-time at a car dealership and uses the agility training in his spare time.

He revealed that it is a ‘huge achievement to have qualified’ and that all they can wish for is to ‘have fun on the day’.

Adding: ‘A little rescue dog who gets 15 to 20 minutes of agility training a week, in addition to his exercises, to get up there and compete against some of the guys who probably do it a lot more than us. I think it will be fantastic, so that’s huge.

“My only ambition was to one day make a grand final with him and we did it, so I’m over the moon about that.

“We’ve done everything we wanted and if we do anything else, I’m made up.”

Every year the international dog show Crufts sees thousands of puppies of all shapes and sizes come from all over the world to one place to take part in a variety of competitions and shows.

Owners and pets will compete in categories such as agility and obedience from Thursday, with the world-class Best In Show title awarded on Sunday.

Crufts has been around since 1891 and is currently organized by The Kennel Club – it is considered the most prestigious dog competition in the world.

Channel 4 and More 4 will be broadcasting the action over four days, if you want to see Indie, Buddy and Beau on the infamous green carpet.

The International Monetary Fund has agreed to more than double the bailout package for Egypt, which is facing its worst economic crisis in decades, exacerbated by war in the neighboring Gaza Strip and Ukraine.

The fund now plans to provide Egypt with $8 billion, up from the initial $3 billion announced in October 2022.

The head of the IMF’s mission in Egypt, Ivanna Vladkova Hollar, noted at a news conference that Egypt’s already struggling economy had been further affected by the conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has hampered the country’s vital tourism trade.

At the same time, revenue from the Suez Canal fell by half after Houthi militants, who say they stand in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, began attacking cargo ships using the Red Sea shipping lanes.

Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said the deal would allow the government to secure an additional $1.2 billion, on top of $8 billion, from the IMF’s Environmental Aptitude Fund and would include development partners such as the World Bank and the European Union encourage Egypt to also give more money. loans to help achieve financial stability.

Last week, Egypt signed a $35 billion deal with the United Arab Emirates to develop parts of the Mediterranean coast. Egyptian officials celebrated it as the largest foreign direct investment in Egypt’s history.

Hours before the deal with the IMF was announced, Egypt’s Central Bank, in an effort to rein in rising inflation, devalued the currency by more than 35 percent – it was the fourth devaluation since October 2022 – and raised interest rates by 600 basis points.

Mr Madbouly said his government and the IMF have reached consensus on the objectives of Egypt’s structural reform plan.

“The aim is to increase foreign exchange reserves, reduce debt burden, ensure the flow of foreign direct investment and work towards high growth rates for the Egyptian economy,” he said.

The government and the monetary fund are committed to social protection measures for vulnerable people who will be affected by the reform plans, Mr Madbouly said.

Over the past 18 months, a severe shortage of foreign currency in Egypt, which is overwhelmingly dependent on imports, has wiped out prices – and concerns about the future. The cost of some basic food items quadrupled, debt levels reached record highs and the currency lost much of its value, decimating the purchasing power of people’s incomes and the value of their savings.

Central Bank Governor Hassan Abdalla said the government’s medium-term plan aims to reduce inflation, which reached a record high of almost 40 percent last summer, to single digits.

Before the IMF deal, mounting economic pressure had forced the government to change its tactics, including freezing some costly megaprojects ordered by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, including a lavish new capital in the desert.

Additional pressure came from the IMF, which refused to transfer much of the original loan until Egypt met certain economic policy conditions. One of these was to stimulate private sector growth by eliminating the competitive advantages enjoyed by Egyptian military companies.

Over the past decade, the Egyptian economy has struggled for stability. Many observers say mismanagement, including overspending on mega-projects and long-standing over-reliance on imports, has left Egypt vulnerable to successive external shocks. In addition to the war in Gaza, there was the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine, which affected both tourism and essential wheat imports.

Mr el-Sisi has repeatedly defended his government’s policies, saying the 2011 uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak had created lasting economic uncertainty.

However, in daily interactions on Cairo’s streets and on social media, many blame the president, whom they accuse of spending money on vanity projects and weakening the economy in a way that undermines Egypt’s influence in the region.

Some experts say the IMF, which has loaned Egypt billions of dollars since 2016, is part of the problem.

“They don’t go deep enough into what’s happening inside the machine,” said Mohamed Fouad, a financial consultant and former Egyptian lawmaker.

Mr Fouad expects the international lender will now make more calculated decisions.

“Their biggest mistake,” he said, “came between 2016 and 2020, when everyone was cheering and focusing only on the macroeconomic aspect. But the foundation was shaky.”

Vivian Yee reporting contributed.

The Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Center currently houses 39 leopards, almost 60% of which are under geriatric care.

(L) Jaya was rescued as a cub in 2008 and is now almost 16 years old. (C) Shankar, a male leopard rescued in 2008, walks through his enclosure. (R) The case of Ganesh and Vitthal, who suffer from physical disabilities, is a rare instance of two male leopards spending companionship with each other.

Leopard Rescue Center: Maharashtra’s first leopard sanctuary, located in Junnar, Pune district, is a sanctuary for many older leopards who spend their lives in rescued care. The Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre, jointly managed by Maharashtra Forest Department and Wildlife SOS, currently houses 39 leopards, of which nearly 60% are under geriatric care.

Most of the animals living at the sanctuary had been the target of human-leopard conflict, attempted poaching by human traffickers, or had been orphaned in the wild. Rescued from an uncertain fate, the leopards under the care of Wildlife SOS and Junnar Forest Division have turned their lives around. They have spent most of their lives in an almost natural environment, supplemented with veterinary care, medical treatment and healthy food.

Ganesh and Vitthal, two male leopards who live together, are not only old but also have several disabilities. While Ganesh is completely blind, Vitthal is missing a hind leg. Caring for elderly leopards with disabilities is therefore more challenging, but the care staff at the sanctuary are always up to the task. While the caretakers prepare olfactory and food enrichments for the blind Ganesh, structural enrichments such as platforms are built at lower levels, taking into account Vitthal’s physical deficiencies.

A leopard enters the final stages of its life from the age of 12, although this age group varies from species to species. For the leopards, this is the stage where they encounter more dental problems, joint problems and a marked change in their overall behavior and personality. Even for the leopards that have grown old under the care of Wildlife SOS and Junnar Forest Division, the change is absolutely evident.

Dr. Chandan Sawane, veterinary officer at Wildlife SOS said: “Leopards suffer from dental problems such as broken teeth, plaque build-up and tartar and root problems. These problems hinder their ability to chew food properly. Unable to eat, they suffer from severe loss of appetite, which compromises their immunity. We perform regular dental checkups to clear out the tar and check for half-broken teeth or blunt canines that could be a problem.”

Kartick Satyanarayan, Co-Founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS said, “Currently, there are more than 35 leopards residing at the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Centre, of which almost 60% are geriatric. That is why our team is meticulous about medical care, diet and health checks to ensure the well-being of the older leopards.”

Amit Bhise, assistant conservator of forests at Junnar, said, “The leopard sanctuary has been in existence at Junnar since 2007 and acts as a sanctuary for animals that cannot return to the wild. The number of rescued leopards currently under geriatric care demonstrates the efforts of the forest department and Wildlife SOS to provide them with a long and healthy life.”

HE is on a mission to help our pets. . . and is here to answer YOUR questions.

Sean McCormack, chief veterinarian at tails.com, promises he can ‘keep pets happy and healthy’

He says, “If your pet is acting strange or sick, or you want to know more about diet or exercise, just ask. I can help keep pets happy and healthy.”

Q) I have rehomed four rescue chickens and they currently don’t have all their feathers.

What can I do to return Emma, Beatrice, Vera and Ida to their full glory as quickly as possible?

Lizzie Keys, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

A) I have taken in rescue hens several times and they can look quite frightening upon arrival.

I’m sure you’re doing everything right, but nutrition is probably the biggest factor in returning them to full health.

Make sure they get high quality pellets as a staple food, a handful of mixed corn once a day and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

They will be fine after their next molt.

It takes time depending on what part of the molting cycle they are in.

This time next year you won’t recognize them from their first photos.

Enjoy their antics, they make great pets.

Woman claims ‘talking dog’ said her name in ‘special’ moment caught on camera

Q) MY 12-year-old pet cat, Sophie, recently had tummy troubles.

Our vet took three days’ worth of stool samples and everything was fine again.

Sophie has access to water 24/7.

Before she got sick she would drink it from her bowl or from the tap, but now she doesn’t go near it anymore.

I have read that it can be a sign of diabetes or hypothyroidism.

If she has this, would she be showing any other signs?

She eats two bowls of wet food a day.

Sarah Hamilton, Stockton-on-Tees

A) If it was a one-off event, it could very well fall into the category of, “Who knows why that happened?”.

But it’s better to know the cause and clarify it than for it to be something more sinister.

With diabetes or hyperthyroidism (cats become hyper- or overactive, dogs become hypo- or underactive) you would expect Sophie to drink more, not less.

The wet food will provide much of the moisture she needs, while cats fed dry food usually drink more to compensate.

The best advice is to monitor for now and if you are still concerned, have your vet check her again.

Q) IS a tarantula a good pet for an eight year old?

My son Kieron begs me for it because he has a great interest in nature.

But what do you think?

Kylie Evans, Swansea

A) I’d say probably not, because they’re usually not that good to be around, but more of a “look and see” kind of pet.

They can become stressed and lose irritating hair, and they are very fragile creatures.

I once had to glue one back together when it fell to the floor and its belly burst. In the end all was well.

There are more suitable pets for an eight-year-old, such as spiny stick insects, hermit crabs or giant African land snails.

If Kieron still has the bug after trying this, then a Chilean Rose Tarantula would be a good starter species when he is a bit older.

Q) CHARLIE, my four-year-old black cat, seems to have lost her mojo.

She has gone from lively, social, playful and boisterous to a semi-recluse who rarely leaves her basket.

She eats normally and goes to her litter box well.

Our vet did blood tests and examined her, but nothing was found.

Any advice?

Dave Buckland, Hull

A) I’m glad your vet didn’t find anything wrong.

Perhaps she has just grown out of her exuberant kitten phase and is moving into a more sedentary era for adult cats.

This happens a lot in dogs who can calm down after being crazy maniacs for two to three years.

The other possibility is that something in the house or outside is upsetting Charlie and causing her to hide more.

Are there new cats in the neighborhood visiting your garden?

Or are there new pets or people in the house?

If not, keep an eye on it and if it gets much worse, go back to the vet.

Sometimes it only takes a few months in our pets’ lives for something to change health-wise, so a blood test may be different a few months later.

But playing games with them can be the perfect solution.

Fetching is the top game for pups and 13 million dog balls were sold last year.

Cats love food-themed toys, including rubber donuts and hamburgers, plus small stuffed animals.

Dr. Karlien Heyrman from Pets At Home said it is also essential that small pets such as hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits are given the chance to exercise and play to stimulate their minds.

She said: “One-to-one, reward-based training can keep intelligent animals such as rats stimulated and can strengthen the bond between pet and owner.

“It’s worth providing rabbits with lots of interesting toys, such as tunnels, platforms and willow toys, to keep them from nibbling on things they shouldn’t.

“Chew textured chew toys are perfect for play and satisfy small pets’ urges to chew because their teeth never stop growing. So by gnawing they keep their teeth healthy.”

The newly launched Vantara is spread over 3,000 hectares within Reliance’s Green Belt Jamnagar refinery complex in Gujarat.

Anant Ambani

New Delhi: Reliance Industries and Reliance Foundation on Monday announced the launch of the Vantara (Star of the Forest) programme. Vantara is an umbrella initiative that aims to rescue, treat, care and rehabilitate injured, abused and endangered animals both in India and abroad. The initiative was conceived by Anant Ambani, director on the boards of RIL and Reliance Foundation.

“What started as a passion for me at a very young age has now become a mission at Vantara. We focus on protecting critically endangered species native to India. We also want to restore vital habitats and address urgent threats to species and make Vantara a leading conservation programme,” Anant Ambani said on the occasion.

Everything you need to know Vantara

  • Vantara is spread over 3,000 hectares within Reliance’s Green Belt Jamnagar refinery complex in Gujarat
  • Vantara aims to be one of the leading contributors to conservation efforts worldwide.
  • Vantara has rescued more than 200 elephants and thousands of other animals, reptiles and birds from unsafe situations in recent years.
  • It has undertaken initiatives for key species, including the rehabilitation of rhinos, leopards and crocodiles.

Explaining the philosophy that inspired him to start Vantara, Ambani added: “Vantara is a combination of the age-old ethical value of compassion with the excellence of modern scientific and technological professionalism. I see Jeev Seva (animal care) as a seva for both the almighty and humanity. I got inspiration for this from my mother. In Hindu religion, animals are said to be dear to the gods.”

“We have rescued more than 200 elephants and brought them here from all parts of the country. We do ‘sewa’ of elephants here. This is not a zoological park but a ‘sewalaya’. The 600 hectare area has been developed as a natural habitat for elephants,” he said.

“We have created an animal hospital with the latest technology. The hospital has MRI and CT scanning machines, endoscopic robotic surgery machines and 6 surgical centers. We have also installed prosthetics for the animals in the hospital here…The zoological park will be opened to the public soon,” Ambani said.

“Vantara is committed to working with the Zoo Authority of India and other relevant government organizations in improving all over 150 zoos in India in the areas of training, capacity building and animal care infrastructure. We hope that Vantara can become a beacon of hope worldwide and demonstrate how a forward-thinking institution can advance global biodiversity conservation initiatives,” he added.

Delhi Police got involved in a rescue operation when they spotted a black kite lying motionless on the side of the road on Mandir Marg.

Black kites are birds of prey and an important part of the food chain.

Double kite rescue: In successive rescue operations, Delhi Police stepped in as heroes to save distressed birds in the capital. Thanks to the quick intervention of police officers, Wildlife SOS was able to save two black kites on the same day. Both birds are currently under observation by the NGO and will be released soon once they are deemed fit.

Earlier on Friday, the Wildlife SOS Rapid Response Unit received a call from Lajpat Nagar police station after one of the officers discovered a distressed black kite on the floor of the station’s parking lot. Concerned about the bird’s welfare, the officer immediately informed Wildlife SOS through its emergency helpline (+91 9871963535).

In another case, Delhi Police got involved in a rescue operation when they spotted a black kite lying motionless on the side of the road on Mandir Marg. Thinking about the bird’s safety, they called Wildlife SOS for help, after which the NGO’s rescue team quickly reached the bird and released it safely. Upon observation, it was found that the bird had suffered a minor injury to its right wing and therefore had to be transferred to the Wildlife SOS transit facility.

Both birds of prey are currently under observation by the NGO’s veterinary team and will be released as soon as they are deemed healthy.

Amit Kumar, officer of Mandir Marg police station, revealed, “We were on patrol when we saw the kite lying helplessly on the ground. That is why we immediately informed the Wildlife SOS team to come and collect the bird.”

“Our association with the Delhi Police goes back more than two decades. With the help of awareness and outreach, we have been able to raise awareness about wildlife in the city. This kind of collaboration from Delhi Police is a result of the awareness work carried out, and we thank the sympathetic officers who took the step to inform our team,” said Kartick Satyanarayan, Co-Founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS.

Wasim Akram, deputy director of special projects at Wildlife SOS, said: “Black kites are birds of prey and an important part of the food chain. A large number of them were once active hunters and now hover over garbage dumps. Expanding urban settlements has resulted in the decline of their original prey base, altering their diet. Another major challenge for black kites is when their flight path is interrupted by large buildings and they become susceptible to mid-air collisions.”
