Zika virus: The Karnataka Health Department is on high alert following the detection of the deadly Zika virus in mosquitoes in Chikkaballapur district, close to Bengaluru city district. The Ministry of Health stated that mosquitoes were tested at 68 different places in the state for the presence of Zika virus in their bodies. Similarly, samples were collected from six locations in Chikkaballapura district.

According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Zika virus is mainly transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which usually bite during the day. Most people with Zika virus infection do not develop any symptoms. It can be transmitted through an infected Aedes mosquito, sexual contact, from a pregnant mother to her newborn baby or through a blood transfusion.

  4. Zika virus infection is associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome, neuropathy, and myelitis in adults and children.
  5. So far, there is no defined antiviral treatment for curing Zika virus. Supportive care such as a healthy diet and hydration is usually recommended.

  1. Wear full-length clothing: Although the humidity and high weather make it difficult to wear long-sleeved clothing, it is important to take this precaution to reduce the risk of mosquito bites or other insect bites during the rainy season.
  2. Eat a balanced meal: It is important to have whole fruits. Seasonal fruit in particular has additional benefits. To increase the platelet count one must have fruits rich in nutrients, vitamin C, vitamin A, antioxidants and fiber. The following fruits can also help maintain gut health-boosting immunity: kiwi, plum, cherries, papaya, apples, pomegranates, broccoli, beetroot, etc.
  3. Take enough rest: It is important to keep the body fit and healthy. Give children enough rest after a hectic day at work or school and let the body rejuvenate and recover.
  4. Maintain good hygiene: Keep the indoor environment clean. Avoid stagnation of the nearby water body as it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  5. Mosquito repellent: Use mosquito repellents and use them mainly in the evening or when the children are out and about.
