Netflix has made a name for itself in the film world by releasing original films that have dominated industry awards such as the Oscars and the Golden Globes. The streaming giant received 18 nominations for this year’s Academy Awards. The new deal with Sony means viewers will be able to stream theatrical releases like Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla Minus One. When you’re trying to settle in for a movie night, it can be hard to choose, right?

The award-winning film Society of the Snow is based on true events and is an adaptation of the book of the same name. In 1972, a rugby team from Uruguay boarded a plane to Chile for a match. The plane crashed in the Andes Mountains, leaving the survivors to struggle with injuries, illness, cold temperatures, and death. Not everyone makes it, and those who face death make painful choices to live.

Director Martin Scorsese’s mafia film features a gripping (and bloody) story and great performances from key players including Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino. Based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses, the film chronicles the life of truck driver Frank Sheeran (De Niro) in 1950s Philadelphia, who becomes a hitman for the Italian-American mafia. It’s an epic that’s both fascinating and disturbing, and if you can wait for its 209-minute running time, it’s worth watching.

Even if you’re not a fan of musicals, don’t be put off by this film based on the autobiographical musical by playwright Jonathan Larson. It has relatable themes about love, friendship, and dealing with career challenges as time passes. By the end, you might even find yourself appreciating the great musical numbers, too.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

Glass Onion is a standalone sequel to the 2019 hit film Knives Out. It follows detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) as he investigates a mysterious death after tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites friends to his private Greek island. The film features some fun plot twists and is punctuated with lighthearted humor and aloof characters played by an all-star cast.

Leave the World Behind (2023)

Leave the World Behind is a gripping, disturbing psychological thriller that chronicles the strange events that unfold during a family vacation in a lavish rental home. A power outage leaves their phones, TVs, and other electronics useless, and two strangers appear at their door. TikTok has been awash with clips and analysis of this apocalypse film, with people pondering possible “hidden messages” and parallels to real life. Watch it and see what you think.

All Quiet on the Western Front was a dominant force at the 95th Annual Academy Awards, as it was nominated for nine Oscars and went on to win four, including Best International Feature Film.
