MUMBAI: The first heavy rain of the year monsoon blocked the wheels of Maximum City on Monday.
Mumbai received heavy rainfall between 2:30 am and 5:30 am even as IMDThe Santacruz observatory recorded 268 mm of rain in a 24-hour period, the second highest July rainfall in a decade. Some areas received more than 300 mm, a third of the catastrophic downpour that flooded Mumbai on July 26, 2005.
The total rainfall recorded by the IMD Santacruz Observatory so far this season is 734.8 mm, of which nearly 36% or more than a third fell on Sunday and Monday.
Flooded roads threw traffic Trains moved slowly over the flooded tracks and 26 arriving flights and 24 departing flights were cancelled. 27 arriving flights were diverted to Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Indore.
One bright spot was the 4% increase in total lake water supply.
Schools and colleges were forced to declare a holiday or close early. BMC and neighbouring civil society organisations said that schools and colleges will remain closed on Tuesdays too.
CM Eknath Shinde took stock of the situation while the state assembly was adjourned due to lack of quorum. Mantralaya allowed its staff to leave early, like other offices and institutions.
