35-year-old cricketer dies of cardiac arrest during match
CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR: A 35-year-old professional cricketer, Imran Patel, died of massive cardiac arrest during a match in Pune on Wednesday evening. Patel had entered the field at 12 noon Garware Stadium as the opening batsman for the league match. After a few overs, he complained to the umpires about pain in his left arm and chest. The discussion was brief and he was walking back to the pavilion when he collapsed. The events were captured on camera as the match was streamed live. Patel was rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
“He had no history of any medical condition,” said Naseer Khan, another cricketer. “He was in good physical condition. In fact, he was an all-rounder who loved the game. We are all still in shock.”
Patel is survived by a wife and three daughters, the youngest of whom is just four months old. A huge crowd turned up late on Wednesday for his last rites near Maulana Azad College. Patel owned a cricket team, had a real estate company and ran a juice shop. His death was eerily similar to that of cricketer Habib Shaikh, who also died while playing a match, on September 7 in Pune. Habib had diabetes.
