5 beauty rules Angelina Jolie swears by to look good at 49 – one is completely free
Angelina Jolie has achieved a lot on her way to fifty, and her work at the United Nations is one of them.
For a mother of six, living a good life also means taking care of herself – and her skin, which at 49 looks better than ever.
The Hollywood A-lister recently wowed fans when she posed on the red carpet in New York for a screening of her film Maria at the annual Big Apple Film Festival.
The Oscar-winning star – who turned Instagram official with her rumored British rapper boyfriend Akala – beamed as she smiled for the cameras in a stunning white dress and caramel locks.
Angelina has been one of our biggest crushes for years, but how does she manage to look so effortlessly beautiful and defy age?
From a completely free tip to a £5 bargain at Superdrug, here we discuss Angelina’s top five rules for maintaining that youthful glow.
Skin care – start early
It’s easy to feel like your beauty bag needs every single product that just hit the shelves or went viral on social media.
But Angelina is living proof that there’s no need to spend thousands of dollars on a skincare routine — and if anything, it’s best to keep things simple.
The actress’ dermatologist, Dr. Rand, told it Refinery29 that Angelina ‘has always been such a natural beauty, so she never had to do much. It was basically just sunscreen, a good cleansing with a mild, gentle cleanser, antioxidants, sometimes glycolic acids and natural products.
“She doesn’t need big scrubs or products with lots of chemicals.”
Make-up free is the way to be
Meanwhile, when it comes to makeup and glamour, Angelina, who announced her divorce from Brad Pitt in 2016, likes to embrace her natural beauty.
Unless she’s at work, her dermatologist says, the star won’t cover her face with heavy foundation and piles of cakey concealer.
“It’s probably another reason why her skin looks good.”
SPF protection
We should all know by now that wearing sunscreen is not only the key to preventing skin cancer, but also to slowing the aging process.
Dr. Rand said, “She has been so good at using sunscreen to protect her skin from a young age. She knew that the sun is not good for the skin in general, in terms of the pigmentation process and things like that.”
Whatever the budget, SPF protection is a must and beauty lovers can find affordable sunscreens for just £5.99 at Superdrug.
Biggest beauty flaws
Fabulous’ Beauty Editor Tara Ledden has shared the do’s and don’ts when it comes to beauty.
“No matter how much time and money you spend on your beauty routine, if you don’t get the basics right, the rest is wasted.
“There aren’t many non-negotiables, but these are the biggest beauty flaws that sabotage your regimen.”
- Not wearing SPF: Sun damage is the leading cause of premature skin aging, so if you want to keep your skin looking plump and radiant, sunscreen is essential.
- To use expired products: At best they are ineffective and do not deliver the results they promise, at worst they cause irritation and infection. The shelf life of beauty products varies: for example, mascara usually has a shelf life of 3 to 6 months, while lipstick lasts 9 to 18 months. Check the ‘POA’ symbol on the package (it looks like a jar and has a number inside that tells you how many months it is safe once opened. If you can’t remember when you opened your product, throw it away then away and start again, marking the month and year with a permanent marker on the package.
- Not knowing your undertone: If you use makeup with the wrong undertone, it will never look natural no matter how many times you blend it! An easy trick to find out if you have a cool, warm, or neutral undertone is to check the veins on your wrist: if they appear blue, you have cool undertones, if they are green, you have warm ones, and if they have a be mixed. you have neutral.
- Skip heat protectant: It may feel unnecessary, but just like sun damage to the skin, excessive heat is the most common cause of hair damage. So if you want shiny, healthy hair, or if you want to grow it longer, using a heat protection product is essential.
- Not washing your face before going to bed: It’s that simple: If you don’t wash your face before you go to sleep, anything left on your skin during the day will remain on your skin even longer, clogging your pores and drying out the surface. Any skin care applied on top won’t be effective if there’s a layer of dirt underneath, and you’ll probably end up with dirty pillows too – yuck!
Don’t give in to beauty standards
With so much pressure from what feels like left, right and center, it’s easy to give in to beauty standards and go under the knife to achieve that “perfect look.”
“I haven’t had anything done yet and I don’t think I will,” Angelina said Daily mail.
“But if it makes someone happy, that’s their business. I’m not in someone else’s shoes to know what makes them feel better about themselves. But I don’t plan to do it myself.”
Beauty starts from within
You can always be the most beautiful girl and the most beautiful woman in the world, but if you don’t have a strong mind, none of that matters, that’s how Angelina feels.
“I often tell my daughters that the most important thing they can do is develop their minds,” she told the publication.
‘There is nothing more attractive – you might even say enchanting – than a woman with an independent will and her own opinion.’
