A hair care expert explains how to prevent hair damage in the summer.

Louise Bailey, the founder of Beauty club londonis no stranger to hair care: he runs a luxury extension salon.

Bailey’s tips are suitable for travelers, even for the most popular beach vacations.

She discussed the role that sea, sand and sun can play in hair.

The pro also gave advice on how to keep your locks healthy and not worry about your vacation.

Bailey gave five important rules to keep your hair healthy in the summer.

“Don’t forget to protect yourself from the sun,” she said.

She added that dermatologists have discovered that the sun does as much damage to hair as it does to skin.

“It turns out your hair is just as sensitive to sun damage as your skin,” she said.

Research has shown that frequent exposure to UV light reduces the amount of lipids in the hair.

“These are the fatty acids that determine the structure of your hair. When they are broken down, your hair feels more brittle, drier and frizzier.”

Bailey offered a solution: sunscreen for the hair.

“If you are looking for a sunscreen for your hair, be careful with products that list Avobenzone as an ingredient, as it can alter the color of your hair and extensions,” she said.

She advised people with dyed hair to wear a hat in the sun.

She added that protective styles can also protect your hair.

“A protective style limits the movement of your hair and prevents it from becoming dry and tangled,” she says.

As a third rule, she emphasized the importance of rinsing well before and after swimming.

“Your hair is porous and will absorb chlorine and salt when you swim, but these chemicals leave your hair feeling brittle and dry,” she said.

“Rinsing your hair with clean water before swimming reduces the absorption of sea or pool water.”

Bailey added that there’s one hair care product you can take with you in your beach bag or on your travels: leave-in hair conditioner.

“This helps maintain moisture levels and provide a protective barrier against environmental damage,” she said.

She advised choosing a product that meets specific needs and reapplying as needed.

“This simple step can make a huge difference when it comes to keeping your hair soft, hydrated and manageable,” she says.

Finally, she always makes sure that her scalp gets the love and care it needs, so that it looks enviable.

“Keeping your scalp clean and well-hydrated prevents dryness and irritation,” she said. “If you spend hours at the beach, chances are you have sand and salt buildup in your hair, too.

“When washing your hair, use a clarifying shampoo and lather it up with gentle, circular motions to remove sand buildup without irritating your scalp.”
