8BitDo Ultimate – Now $47.99 at Amazon

TechRadar Rating: 5/5

“Look, if I had to recommend just one of the above Nintendo Switch-compatible controllers… it’d be a close call, but I’d give it to the phenomenal 8BitDo Ultimate controller. It’s sat atop our best Nintendo Switch controllers list for years now; not because there’s a shortage of great Nintendo Switch gamepads out there – far from it. Simply because none of them can match the 8BitDo Ultimate in terms of raw quality and value.

“The 8BitDo Ultimate was one of the first Nintendo Switch controllers to feature Hall-effect thumbsticks. These differ from traditional analog sticks in that they effectively eliminate the physical friction created by input, instead relying on electrical signals that completely eliminate the risk of stick drift due to wear and tear. The addition of a dedicated charging cradle, 20 hours of battery life, and overall superior build quality certainly don’t hurt, either.

“In my original 5-star review of the 8BitDo Ultimate controller, I said that this controller ‘proves that third-party pads can match or even surpass official options.’ This controller is the complete package; it feels great and is packed with extra features, like programmable buttons on the back and a charging dock.”

Sony WH-1000XM4 – Now Just $198 at Amazon

TechRadar Rating: 5/5

You might be wondering why a TechRadar editor is still recommending headphones from 2020. We’re only weeks away from the Sony WH-1000XM4 celebrating their fourth birthday and heading to kindergarten, and the new Sony WH-1000XM5 have been around for a few years themselves.

“Like you probably noticed, the prices of things have gotten a little wild lately [checks notes]ah, four years. Most of the new headphones that have come out since then have steadily increased in price and haven’t always brought a dramatic improvement in sound or noise-cancelling quality.

“That was the case with the Sony XM4 and XM5 when they came out. The XM4 is still 90% as good as the newer model, but during sales events you can find it for that magic sub-$200 price point, while the XM5 is only now creeping under $300. And remember, the XM4 were five-star, best in class headphones when they started! So now they’re great headphones that are just a little bit older.

“Under the current circumstances, I still consider the older model to be the phone that offers the most bang for your buck, as I noted in an update to our Sony WH-1000XM4 review.”
