7.8% polls after 5pm is not an increase, but corresponds to an average turnout: CEO data
MUMBAI: While the opposition has alleged major discrepancies in the Maharashtra elections, it raises questions about the elections 7.8% polling after 5 p.mThe latest data from the state Chief Election Office shows that there has been no dramatic increase, reports Priyanka Kakodkar. The polls were initially slow, as only 6.6% voted in the first two hours. Then, 11.5% of registered voters voted between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and 14% between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Then another 13.3% voted between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM. So the 7.8% voting from 5pm to the end of voting will continue after the 6pm deadline because the last person in line until then gets to vote.
“The percentage increase in the number of votes after 5 p.m. is in line with the progress of voting throughout the day. There is no increase,” chief election officer S Chockalingam told TOI. “It’s normal growth. If we compare it with the 2019 parliamentary elections and even with the Lok Sabha polls 2024“The trend is similar,” Chockalingam said. “The numbers are consistent with the historical trend and with today’s trend,” he added.
Explaining the lower discrepancies with Jharkhand’s voting data till the end of the elections, Chockalingam said, “In Jharkhand, the elections are till 5 pm, while in Maharashtra it is till 6 pm. In Jharkhand, people wake up early and vote prefer early in the day. In Maharashtra, due to higher urbanization, people tend to vote in the later part of the day.”
