7 more dead in Assam floods, death toll rises to 79
GUWAHATI: With seven more deaths in the past 24 hours, capital punishment in Floods in Assam rose to 79 (since May), even as CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said Tuesday that the state is on the road to recovery as water levels in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have dropped below danger levels in most regions.
While two deaths due to floods were reported from Cachar district, one each from Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Dhemaji, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts since Monday. Four children were among the dead. Assam State Disaster Management Authority said over 17.2 lakh people were still affected by the deluge.
Earlier in the day, Sarma in X described the declining trend of major rivers as “good news” amid the second wave of floods in the state.
