I live in a box truck that I turned into a house for £500 – the rents were insane
RENT prices can be crippling, so many people are looking for cheaper alternatives to physical housing houses to save some money.
Steph revealed how she managed to convert a box truck into a cozy home for just £500.
The craftsman, that one sells her creations onlinehas lived in her blue Mercedes Sprinter Luton with her two rescues dogsBlue and Sunny, for about three years.
After leaving home, Steph said she lived a very nomadic lifestyle, trying to live in a caravan, tent and a few wagons before buying her current home.
In conversation with YouTube channel Delivery timeshe said: “I paid about £3,000 for it. The back was empty, so no conversion has taken place yet. The conversion cost me about £500 tops.
“What cost me the most money was insulation, which cost about £250. You have to be a little handy.”
Steph transformed the truck on a budget, adding homely touches like a pasta machine, desk, rocking chair, as well as a sewing machine and spinning wheel for her crafts.
The truck also has a single bed and she uses a sleeping bag for bedding.
There is storage space under the bed for her clothes and crafts, and she prepares her meals in her ‘small, simple’ kitchen on a campsite oven.
Although she has made the house cozy, she has no running water and there are water jugs under the sink.
Meanwhile, her toilet is a camping toilet, kept in a small wooden box she built for privacy.
Steph insisted: ‘The whole point of this lifestyle is to live simply.
“Living like this is not for everyone, but for me it is perfect. I feel free and I live life on my terms. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
She said she grew up in the country and wanted to stay close to her family, but the rent was “so high it just didn’t work.”
Steph claims she is ‘technically homeless in the eyes of the government’ despite ‘protecting herself’.
Many people were impressed by her unusual home, with one saying: “Has anyone else noticed that people who live alternative lifestyles seem to be some of the nicest people around?”
Another added: “Finally someone who doesn’t have unlimited conversion money. It’s beautiful and one of a kind.”
And a third commented: “What a healthy way to live.”
Is it legal to live in a van?
IF you want to live in a van to save money or travel, you’ll be happy to know there are no UK laws stopping you.
However, you must ensure that your vehicle has passed its MOT and is fully road legal.
There may also be restrictions on where you can park to sleep in your van.
For example, local authorities place restrictions on certain streets or parking spaces, and you could be fined if you spend the night there.
It can also be unsafe to stop at certain locations, especially at night.
