One of the best games of the year is just $40 in an early Black Friday deal

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth came out in February for the PS5, and I’ve already sunk hours into this game. As an early Black Friday deal, it’s a bargain $40 on Amazona 43% drop from the usual $70 price tag. This particular game is an Amazon exclusive, meaning it comes with the game plus a PS5 controller skin featuring the main characters Cloud and Sephiroth.

Like many of the big deals dropping this season, the price won’t last long, so you’ll need to act quickly.

There’s some gaming history here. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second part of the Final Fantasy VII Remake saga, a three-part retelling of the 1997 classic Final Fantasy VII. The game picks up right after the first entry in the series, Final Fantasy VII Remake, which was released in 2020. Cloud and company have left the industrial city of Midgar and are exploring the world to unravel the mysteries that brought them all together.

In a review, CNET’s David Lumb praised the game’s charm, noting that it is “rich with character heart-to-hearts, games to play, and silly but charming gags.”

Lumb adds, “Even without deviating greatly from the original Final Fantasy VII, Rebirth is different because it allows these strangers to grow closer together from moment to moment.”

And the game improves on a number of aspects of Final Fantasy VII Remake, from upgrading the game’s combat to adding a new item crafting system. There’s a wealth of quests, mini-games, and other activities in Rebirth, and it could easily take someone over 50 hours to complete the game’s main story, and many more hours to do everything.

As someone who played the original, I liked how Rebirth focuses on some key parts of the storyline. It looks at the backstory of Cloud and the game’s antagonist, Sephiroth. It also creates such an amazing visual landscape that goes far beyond what could have been contemplated in 1997, but does it in a way that makes sense and fits into what I remember of the original. Nothing about Rebirth feels like it was meant to diminish what the original had, but instead it expands on that world to make it more vibrant.

Why this deal matters

This is a very good award for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and it comes just days after the game received multiple Game Award nominations, including a nomination for the big award, Game of the Year. Rebirth offers so much content for its original price of $70, which makes the early Black Friday price tag of $40 a big deal.

If there’s one game you want to buy to keep you busy throughout the holiday season, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the one to buy. It looks great and has an emotional storyline that has thrilled fans old and new.
