'A thousand times better than her predecessor': Delhi LG Saxena's surprising praise for CM Atishi
NEW DELHI: Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena was praised on Friday Prime Minister Atishiand called her “a thousand times better” than her predecessor, Arvind Kejriwal.
“I am happy today that the CM of Delhi is a woman, and I can confidently say that she is a thousand times better than her predecessor,” Saxena said, looking at Atishi, who was present on the stage.
The comment was made during the seventh convocation ceremony of the Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Womenwhere Saxena and Atishi both addressed the students.
During his address to the graduating students, Saxena outlined four guiding principles for success: personal responsibility, responsibility to family, community involvement and nation building.
“The fourth responsibility is to prove yourself as a woman who has broken the glass ceiling of gender and is on par with others in all areas,” he said.
The praise for Atishi comes against a backdrop of political friction between the AAP government and LG Saxena, particularly over governance and control of Delhi’s bureaucracy.
Kejriwal had resigned as chief minister in September, stating that he would reclaim the post only after receiving a “certificate of probity” from the people of Delhi following allegations of corruption.
Kejriwal then proposed Atishi’s name for the role, which was unanimously accepted by the AAP legislative party.
This comes after Saxena accused Kejriwal earlier this week of depriving Delhiites of the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat healthcare program over his alleged fear that its implementation would undermine his claims about Delhi’s healthcare model.
Saxena said the scheme, which has benefited millions across the country, was approved by the then Delhi Health Minister in 2018 but was blocked by Kejriwal. According to Saxena, Kejriwal opposed the plan as he wanted credit for any welfare initiative related to his government.
