Nine arrested after a violent brawl broke out on a quiet Melbourne street that left one man fighting for his life

A young man is fighting for his life after being stabbed during a violent brawl that broke out early on Saturday morning, with police making nine arrests.

Emergency services were called to Mosfield Drive in Hoppers Crossing, in Melbourne’s south-west, about 3.40am and found a 23-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.

He was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The nine men will be questioned by detectives and no charges have been filed.

Police are also investigating whether a second man who presented to a Werribee hospital with suspected stab wounds is linked to the Hoppers Crossing incident.

A 16-year-old boy arrived at around 4am in a black Mazda CX9 and also had serious stab wounds. According to a police spokesperson, it is unclear where the second stabbing took place.

On Saturday, detectives interviewed residents on quiet Hoppers Crossing Street and saw officers combing the area around Fraser Street Reserve and a property on Spring Street.

Broken bottles and blood-stained rags were left in the driveway of the Spring Street address as police took photos of beer cartons left at the Fraser Street Reserve.

At around 3:30 am, residents were awakened by a commotion.

“I heard a few calls for help and then I heard swearing,” said neighbor George The Herald Sun.

“I looked out my window and saw three boys running.”

‘I was a bit upset about what was going on, it’s a quiet street here. I knew something was wrong and called the police.’

Police said they do not believe either incident was a random attack.

“Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of both incidents, which police believe are being addressed at this stage,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“Detectives are trying to determine if the two incidents are related.”

The spokesperson asked anyone who witnessed the incidents or had footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
