The extent of the BJP’s dominance in these elections can be gauged from the fact that the saffron party’s expected score is more than double the MVA of the opposition, which includes the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) belong. Even within the ruling Mahayuti, the BJP leads in more seats than the combined number of its allies – the Shiv Sena and the NCP.
The BJP’s success rate is far ahead of all other five players in the fray, including two of its allies. While the Shiv Sena is leading with 56 of the 81 seats they contested, the NCP is leading with 38 of the 59 seats. In the opposition bloc, all three allies – the Congress, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the NCP (SP) have been decimated. The Congress is also heading for a disastrous show with just 19 seats ahead. This is less than half the number of 44 seats in 2019. The grand old party, which had surprised everyone, including itself, by emerging as the biggest winner in the state in the Lok Sabha elections, would be in the state meeting could end up at the bottom of the ladder.
The BJP’s resounding victory in Maharashtra also paves the way for the chief minister’s return to the state after five years. In 2019, the BJP had emerged as the largest party with 105 seats but could not form the government as its pre-election ally Shiv Sena ditched the NDA and moved to the opposition to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. However, Eknath Shinde rebelled against Uddhav Thackeray in 2022 to split the Shiv Sena and oust the MVA government. The BJP, despite being the senior partner, gave the top post to Shinde. With this verdict, the saffron party will now be in a strong position to regain the top position.
