Meanwhile, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and NCP factions, lagged far behind and led in just 50 constituencies.
Thackeray called the results ‘incomprehensible’ and described the Mahayuti victory as a ‘tsunami instead of a wave’.
He reflected on his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and expressed disbelief at the voters’ response. “Maharashtra, who listened to me as the head of the family during Covid, has behaved this way towards me. It’s hard to accept,” he said.
Talking about the BJP’s ‘batenge toh katenge’ slogan, Thackeray said, “It didn’t work. Some things are secular like unemployment and inflation. Everyone is affected. So it didn’t work.”
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attributed the victory to public support for Eknath Shinde as the “real Shiv Sena” and Ajit Pawar’s legitimacy as NCP leader. “The people have given their mandate,” Fadnavis said.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, along with Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar and other Mahayuti leaders, celebrated the alliance’s success by exchanging sweets and displaying victory signs at a press conference.
While counting of votes continued in a few constituencies, the BJP-led Mahayuti completely dominated the Assembly elections in Maharashtra.
