Keir Starmer has lost the race to become the first European leader to visit Donald Trump in the White House, it was unveiled last night.
The prime minister is second in the French Emmanuel Macron, who will see the president three days before him.
The White House confirmed last night that the Labor leader will meet Mr Trump next Thursday, after the French president will visit him on Monday.
It comes as a blow to No 10 who would like to position Sir Keir as a bridge between the US and Europe on defense and trade.
The prime minister also wants to act as a peacemaker between the US and Ukraine, but was told yesterday that he will have to show some dedication for the expenditure for defense during his first trip to Washington since the inauguration.
Sir Keir has so far refused to say when the financing for the armed forces will reach 2.5 percent of GDP, with an announcement that has been planned for spring for a long time.
But he has come under pressure to accelerate the decision since the dramatic events of the past week, when the US warned Europe, the lake of the burden for its safety has to be asked and Sir Keir has requested the prospect of British troops that serve as peace force In Ukraine.
