West Bengal bypoll: TMC wins all six seats, RG Kar case makes no dent
KOLKATA: TMC on Saturday won the elections in Bengal, the first after the rape-murder of RG Kar. TMC won all six seats voted on on November 13, taking the total number of seats in the 294-member parliamentary assembly to 219. The party’s “actual” majority could be higher as four opposition MLAs have consistently sided with TMC both inside and outside the assembly.
CM Mamata Banerjee posted on (guards).”
While the bypoll results are generally in line with those of the party in power and do not lead to any significant change in the political status quo, the November 13 bypolls were conducted just over three months after the rape-murder of RG Kar held. It also came against the backdrop of a serious TMC haemorrhage in urban constituencies in the 2024 LS polls. Moreover, in Madarihat seat, the party was fighting a battle it never won. However, the results show that TMC not only managed to stop the bleeding, but also reversed it.
