PC Cantrill said: 'You participate in the job to help people and when you deal with such situations, you realize the need for quick thinking and positive action, so that the needs of others are often for your own.
'I managed to gain access to the house and find the woman by thick smoke. She lay on the floor and in a confused state.
'She suffered from the effects of inhalation of smoke and was clearly very scared.
'I moved her to an open window, where we had to stay until the fire brigade arrived with breathing equipment for both of us to use the house.
'The time was of vital importance and my instinct to maintain life was of the utmost importance during the incident.
'I am happy to have helped her and she was very grateful.
“It was a great relief to discover that she had not been seriously injured and fully recovered.”
Detective agent Tony Tonks, who investigated the house fire, said: 'PC Cantrill showed enormous courage in finding this woman through dense smoke.
