EC announces bypolls for six Rajya Sabha seats
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Tuesday announced early elections for six Rajya Sabha seats, including three from Andhra Pradesh and one each from Odisha, West Bengal and Haryana. Elections will be held on December 20 for the seats left vacant due to the resignation of the respective MPs.
The three seats in Andhra Pradesh fell vacant after the YSR Congress Party MPs who represented them – Venkataramana Rao Mopidevi, Beedha Masthan Rao Yadav and Ryaga Krishnaiah – resigned in August and September and switched their allegiance to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
Similarly, Sujeet Kumar had resigned from the Rajya Sabha in September after quitting the BJD and joining the BJP. The vacancy in West Bengal was caused by the resignation of ex-bureaucrat Jawahar Sircar in September in protest against the handling of the RG Kar rape and murder case. In Haryana, the only vacancy occurred due to the resignation of Krishan Lal Panwar from the Rajya Sabha after his election as a member of the state assembly in October. Panwar is currently a minister in the Haryana government.
