India is currently the largest milk producer in the worldaccounting for 24% of global milk production. In terms of breed/species, native buffaloes contributed the highest percentage (31.5%), followed by crossbred cows (31.1%), nondescript buffaloes (over 13%), native cows (11%), nondescript cows ( 10%) and goats (over 13%). 3%).
Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh, while releasing the statistics, said that even the per capita availability of milk has increased from 459 grams per day in 2022-23 to 471 grams per day in 2023-24, which amounts to an annual increase of 2.6%.
Speaking on the need to further increase production, Singh asked dairy farmers to make widespread use of sex-sorted semen and artificial insemination, saying the government in turn was focusing on breed improvement of cattle. He added that as the country moves towards becoming the third largest economy in the world, the contribution of the dairy sector will be enormous.
Unlike the livestock census, which is conducted every five years, the ISS is conducted annually in three different seasons (summer, rainy and winter), covering 15% (96,000 villages) of the total number of villages in the country, for the estimate of milk production. meat, egg and wool. It is also done in two city wards of each district during this period.
The primary purpose of such a study is to provide reliable livestock farming indicators for policy making and research. Currently, the 21st Livestock Census operation covering 30 crore households is being conducted. It will be ready next February.
The survey result shows that West Bengal was the largest meat producer during 2023-2024, followed by UP, Maharashtra, Telangana and AP. Almost 50% of meat production comes from poultry, followed by 18% from buffalo, more than 15% from goats, 11% from ships, almost 4% from pigs and more than 2% from cattle.
In terms of eggs, AP is the largest producer, followed by Tamil Nadu, Telangana, West Bengal and Karnataka. India is the second largest producer of eggs in the world.
In terms of wool production, the largest contribution comes from Rajasthan (nearly 48%), followed by J&K (23%), Gujarat (6%), Maharashtra (5%) and HP (4%). In terms of annual growth, Punjab witnessed the highest AGR of 22%, followed by Tamil Nadu (17%) and Gujarat (3%).
